CLUB PRESIDENTS REPORT - Bill Harrigan Hello members;
This week the INVICTUS Games kicks off in Sydney, and our Club and sub-Branch in 2017 became
sponsors and again in 2018 our sub-Branch made a substantial donation to the Games. As
sponsors we received a flag which is hung proudly in the south western corner of our Club.
(Where the band is situated.)
This week I attended the Leadership Assembly at the Waverley College and the privilege of
witnessing the elected Captain, House captains and Prefects for 2019 being presented with their badges of office.
Also in attendance was Mr. Jim Terrie the ClubsNSW Invictus Games co-ordinator and Mr. Adrian Talbot of the
Invictus Games Committee. Adrian gave a comprehensive talk on the history and the organisation of the Games to
the students. He also publicly in his presentation made mention of the support provided by our Club and
sub-Branch.
As a result of our sponsorship, we received a number of tickets to the Athletics on Friday 26th October
(8) and the Closing Ceremony (2x2 seated) on Saturday 27th October. If there are any other tickets forthcoming Rob
will let know either before or during the raffles. The sub-Branch also sponsored Peter Rudland who is competing in
the wheelchair rugby and the cycling. The cycling which Peter is contesting about 10.30am and 1.00pm on Sunday is
being held in the Botanical Gardens and entry is free. If you attend please make yourself known to Peter who has
faced adversity and continues to beat it.
Another Development Group meeting was held on Tuesday 9th October and we are advised our Developers
Capital Bluestone are well into the process of submitting another DA to the Waverley Council reducing the height to
32 metres or about ten floors. I will keep you informed as to the progress of this Development application.
Last weekend Vice President Kevin Hagan and I attended the Annual ClubsNSW AGM and Conference held at
the Convention Centre at Darling Harbor. We also attended several presentations on Gaming and Food and
Beverage. The keynote of the Conference was an outstanding presentation by Alan Jones, AO, entitled ‘The Way I
See It’ looking at many issues effecting our way of life.
On Saturday evening I attended the Dinner and along with Ken Murray from the Randwick Labor Club
participated in accepting the Clubs in Collaboration Award won by the Eastern Region Clubs for Addressing
Domestic Violence. Some may remember attending a function at South’s Juniors earlier this year in support of this
important project.
I am having a couple of weeks off until the 7th November so no column that week. Please support the
Dinner it will commemorate the end of the Centenary of WW One, the 85th Anniversary of the sub-Branch
receiving its Charter and the 100th Anniversary of the Memorial in Waverley Park. See you in our Club.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT - Rob McPake Good afternoon members, well it appears so anyway. Hard to tell during our continued passage of
tropical wet. The rains have served us well though, purging the undesirable remnants of a glorified
victory evening a couple of Sundays ago. I chose not to spoil your glory at the time; it was a
sensational performance by the Mighty Roosters and our neighbours from across the road
cordoned off the streets with ample warning and care for a victory greeting of grandeur. However,
dear neighbours, you forgot one basic necessity: the need for porta loos! Yes, when enraptured crowds flow in
throng, accompanied by the incessant flow of wine, bubbly and beer, something else must inevitably flow. Let’s
face it, we all have to pee and, on the Sunday victory celebration night, it was most evident Gray Street proved a
safe port of call for nature’s call! The foliage in our planter boxes is still in recovery mode: a light hue of motley
green, alone and palely loitering! Enough said. When the Roosters make the Grand Final next season, as you surely
will, can you please, please factor the imperative need for porta loos in your forward planning.
Don’t forget members, tickets are still on sale for the Kerry Erwin Psychic Medium show to be staged in
the Club auditorium tomorrow evening, Saturday, 20th October 2018 from 7:00pm to 9:30pm. Tickets are
available to members at the valued price of $35. Come and enjoy the intrigue of a renowned international
spiritualist and clairvoyant in action. Interested members are encouraged to approach reception supervisors for
details and ticket purchases. Your Club will also be venue to FIGHT NIGHT on Saturday, 27th October 2018 from
6:00pm to 10:30pm in the auditorium. Tickets are available for $50 on the night and/or from myself prior to the
event. Reborn Fitness will be hosting the event which will include thirteen (13) amateur bouts; a bargain for
pugilism enthusiasts.
Advance warning bell to all members and guests interested in booking for our very popular Melbourne
Cup Luncheon on Tuesday, 6th November 2018: tickets are selling rapidly, so book early as we cap the total
number at eighty (80). For the valued price of $30 per member; $38 per visitor, you will receive a two course meal
(main and desert); the spectacle of the Cup on our big screen; complimentary arrival bubbly/wine or beer; an array
of promotions; lucky door prizes; the happy, smiling faces of our jockettes; and, most importantly, the ambience of
the Club you love: CLUB BONDI JUNCTION!!!. The enjoyment of this national day of sporting joy will extend well
beyond Race 7 at Flemington as we will be providing post cup musical entertainment in the form of our very
popular duo: BACK 2 FRONT who will be playing from 5:00pm to 8:30pm in the Club’s main lounge. So, having said
all of this, DON’T PROCRASTINATE, see reception staff for ticket bookings early!
This Tuesday, 23rd October 2018 is the inaugural night of Ceroc and Modern Jive classes in the Club
auditorium from 6:30pm to 10:00pm. Julie Gunn, renowned dance instructor and class coordinator, will be here to
recruit prospective clientele and/or to simply answer any questions those interested may have. This is an
opportunity to engage in some beneficial cardio activity while enhancing your dancing skills and cultural rapport. If
you are interested, come and speak to Julie this coming Tuesday; a very approachable and affable professional.
The first four (4) weeks of Tuesday night Fame Trivia have met with moderate success with the average
number of participants being twenty eight (28) which is pleasing. Entry is free with many prizes/ vouchers to be
won, including the weekly cash jackpot prize which has incremented to $150. Please continue to support the
promotion which is currently on trial and we would dearly love to retain. The hostess, Lola, appears jovial in
approach with a great sense of humour. However, Lola is acutely aware of the importance of running a clean and
honest game as one participant with mobile phone in hand at the bar last week soon found. Like the proverbial
blue heeler, Lola pounced on him and he was put to shame; phone confiscated! Ah, what an ordeal! Cheats never
prosper when Lola’s on board! Please members, I beseech you, come along and support and multiply those brain
cells in the process.
Members, please be aware the 85th Anniversary celebration Dinner of your Club will be held on Friday, 9th November 2018. Tickets have been on sale for two weeks at $40 per head. This includes a three course meal and complimentary beer, wine and soft drinks throughout the evening, as well as musical entertainment from the Sam Pellegrino duo. Please enquire at the reception counter and/or speak to me. WE REQUIRE YOUR SUPPORT PLEASE. On a closing note, thank you to President, Bill Harrigan, and the Sub Branch for the free tickets to INVICTUS GAMES Closing Ceremony and Athletics which I distributed to interested Club members following last evenings raffle. They went down a treat!
TILL NEXT WE MEET IN RAIN, HAIL OR SUNLIGHT, SEE YOU ROUND THE CLUB YOU LOVE: CLUB BONDI JUNCTION!!!

TRIP TO KOKODA TRACK MEMORIAL WALKWAY
- Report by Dave Jeffrey
On Thursday the 18th October, Yvonne Calder from the Auxiliary, along with Audrey McCallum & the Waverley Historical Society, organised the most wonderful bus trip for everyone to the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway, Concord, of which Bondi Junction Sub-Branch is a proud major sponsor. The whole day was first class; the girls had it organised perfectly. There is a striking Memorial Centre piece with images from the New Guinea Campaign sandblasted onto granite walls dedicated to the memory of the individuals who served. This was followed by an easy walk of about 800 metres (wheelchair accessible) with 22 Audio stations along the way showing images & accounts of the campaign. Then a very nice lunch at the canteen. But the absolute highlight of the day was our guide, Reg Chard. As we all know there is no better account of history than by someone who was literally there, well Reg is an actual Kokoda veteran. Along with his assistant Karen, they gave us a most enthralling & sometimes harrowing account of the hardships, dangers & absolute horrors of it all. In some cases even having to shoot their wounded mates. One of the overriding messages that we all came away with was Reg's account of the absolute mate-ship that none of them could ever have survived without. Well done Reg - We will be back. Thanks to Audrey, Yvonne & our organisers.
SUB-BRANCH HONORARY SECRETARY
REPORT - Sue Welman
Hello members, Deposits have been paid for the Lake Lodge renovations and it is hoped work
will commence shortly. An exciting time ahead next week when the Invictus Games commence, we wish all competing veterans the best of luck. The Sub-Branch has again offered Bronte Public School and Waverley Public School a visit to Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway for their year 6 students. Bronte Public School has accepted and will be attending in November accompanied by our President and a committee member. We are looking forward to seeing many members attending our Combined Club Annual Dinner, which will celebrate the 85th Anniversary of the Sub-Branch receiving its Charter, together with end of the Commemorative period of the Centenary of WW1 and the forthcoming 100th birthday of the War Memorial in Waverley Park. It is also a prelude to Remembrance Day when a Service will be held at 10am on Sunday 11th November at the Waverley Park, to re-dedicate the War Memorial with a plaque and also our Annual Remembrance Day Service. Last night Committee man and Welfare Officer David Jeffrey attended a concert at Sydney Olympic Park Lodge hosted by the Australian Military Wives who we support financially. Also yesterday 27 members enjoyed a bus trip arranged by the BJW RSL Auxiliary members to the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway at Concord. They will now understand the significance of our sub-Branch efforts to engage all local schools and colleges in the Waverley District to visit this important memorial. Memberships renewals will commence in mid November and the Committee is currently considering the question of subsidising your capitation fees. If so, this could well be the last year the sub-Branch may be permitted to do so. Have a great weekend and enjoy the INVICTUS games.
