STUDENTS: The information in this handbook is designed to assist the student and parents in choosing subjects for the next school year. The student’s Four Year Plan, which is updated each year, should reflect the student’s future plans, the student’s abilities, and graduation requirements. The student’s future plans will determine which of the suggested sequences should be used to select electives. All students will be scheduled for a conference with their counselor during the month of February, at which time, they will select the courses which they will take during the next year. After the information is entered into the computer system, parents will receive a Subject Election Verification form, which lists the courses the student is scheduled to take the next school year. If the parent does not agree with the courses selected or has any questions, the parent must contact the counselor within two weeks. Since staffing and programs are based on this information, no changes will be made to the student’s subject elections in September unless the student has failed a course which is a pre-requisite for a course on the student’s program. Included in this handbook are the following:
Graduation requirements for Chicago Public High Schools (p. 2)
Admission Requirements at Illinois Public Universities (p. 2)
Sequence for Special Programs (p. 3-7) Course Offerings (p. 8-12)
We encourage students and their parents to read and discuss the information in this handbook. To help you become familiar with the content of any particular course, you are welcome to view our course descriptions on Taft’s website at www.tafths.org. If you have any questions, please consult with your division teacher or counselor.
Dr. A. Tarvardian, Ph.D.
