Bio

I have spent my life surrounded by the rolling fields and beautiful state parks of Tennessee and Kentucky; where I first discovered my passion for the natural world. Much of who I am as a designer and individual stems from the geography of my upbringing and a family who prefers hiking Yosemite Valley over sitting by the beach; lending me the unique lens through which I view and appreciate my surroundings.

A Passion for the Story

As someone with a passion for story telling, I believe a key component to successful design is the presence of a strong narrative woven into it’s very fabric, communicating stories of history, culture, and identity, while encouraging new stories of progress and innovation.

It is my love for the story that draws me to various forms of writing and research. Most recently I have begun contributing works to Land8.com, where my aim has been to spark conversation between professionals and further develop my literary voice.

“The immobile nature of site furnishings has long been an issue for landscape architects and urban designers working in the public realm. While immobility is traditionally a necessary characteristic to prevent theft or vandalism, members of a Nashville, Tennessee think tank, The Agile Landscape Project, have been working towards an innovative solution that could bring mobility back to site furnishings.” - excerpt from ‘CHAIR>bench by The Agile Landscape Project’

In my current position with Page Duke Landscape Architects, I have gained valuable experience as a project manager working closely with renown landscape architect Ben Page, on master planning projects ranging from multi-million dollar residential properties to sizable farms and ranches. PageDuke is a fast paced office environment where self teaching, dedication, and flexibility have been key to my early success.

I am currently the project manager on 13 projects through which I have experienced various aspects of the design, detailing, documentation, and project management process.

2015 Antiques &Garden ShowNashville, TN

One of my most recent projects was to represent PageDuke in Nashville’s annual the Antiques & Garden Show, the theme of which was tribute to Oscar De La Renta. I worked directly with Ben Page to develop a plan for this garden, which was then built off site with the help of two of my colleagues.

Most of the plant material was edible (spinach, lettuce, kale, ect.) and donated to a local food mission after the show to be planted in their greenhouse and help feed the homeless of Nashville.

The garden was awarded the Bryant Flemming Award for Best of Show.

“Ethereal and Magical! The images of Oscar de la Renta’s ball gowns seem to float on air... You really have to see this to believe it.”

Single Family Residence Nashville, TN

This single family residence is one of the projects that I have had the pleasure of managing from the initial client meeting on through the current phase of construction documentation. We are the lead on this project which has involved multiple phases of conceptual development, a Board of Zoning & Appeals submittal and hearing, and continuous coordination with the architect, civil engineers, and contractor.

This project has also involved intensive study of the stormwater management and will contain pervious paver systems, to improve on site stormwater quantity and quality levels.

In this position, my responsibilities included undertaking tasks traditionally delegated to by LAs, such as design details and rendering, as well as collaborating with engineers on stormwater tasks that would otherwise typically be undertaken by a civil engineer.

With regard to stormwater, I was primarily involved in the GIS mapping, modeling, and assessment of storm sewer systems for local governments. This also involved the simultaneous development and documentation of new standardized methods and procedure for the firms future use in similar projects.

Photoshop plan rendering for a Bio-swale and educational sign panel project I was heavily involved with.

This internship position with the multidisciplinary firm SW+A and Urban Edge Studio, provided me with valuable office and personal experience through working closely with talented and reputable landscape architects and engineers, such as Bill Eubanks, FASLA, on a range of different project types.

During my time with SW+A I was fortunate enough to be included in many different phases of the design process for multiple projects, leading me to develop a better understanding of the process, structure, and time frame for professional projects.

Project Involvement:

• Brainstorming and concept development

• board layout • 3D modeling• Inclusive play design

• Rendering• Small site design (Starbucks)• Planting design• LEED accreditation maps/docs• Analysis Mapping

• Preparation of engineering exhibits

• Coordination with architects, engineers, clients, and city officials

This plaza and site design was conceived for the SCRA technology company, the aim of which being to embody the company’s innovative spirit through contemporary design and sustainable practices. I was involved with this cutting edge project from the beginning of the design process. Some of my responsibilities included:

While at the University of Kentucky I had the pleasure of working directly with rural Kentucky communities and institutions on multiple occasions to develop new planning and design guidelines as well as propose design solutions. Each project involved numerous public meetings, design charettes, and presentations with community members and officials.

I was often able to play a leading role during the presentation and charette phases of each process. A role in which I was able to utilize my strong communication skills to help bridge the differences in perspective, direction, and expectations of the community versus those of the design team.

Over the course of 2 months a team of 6 colleagues and I worked with community members and officials from the town of Brodhead, Kentucky to develop a set of formal planning and design solutions and strategies that would revitalize this once thriving railroad town. This project resulted in a 60 page bound document donated to Brodhead upon completion.

My section of this proposal focused on the identification of local economic drivers, both current and potential, and analyzing the associated infrastructure components necessary to encourage further development of these economic drivers. One such economic driver was the facilitation of events and festivals which currently draw visitors regionally. So a large section of the proposal is dedicated to proposing infrastructure improvements that would facilitate for further growth of their tourism industry.

The goal of this capstone project was to design and assemble a complete set of working drawings for a fitness facility and trail. Through this project I learned how to create and assemble a full set of working drawings with the quality and accuracy that would be expected from a landscape architecture firm.

This undergraduate semester was one of the most valuable learning experiences contributing to my development as a landscape architect. Taking a project to near completion taught me to design smart and efficiently with great attention to detail. In addition, I discovered my own interest in site grading and storm drainage.
