CELEBRATING OUR 44TH SEASON / 25,000 ALUMNI

WILDERNESS ADVENTURESEST: 1973

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO PARENTS

Welcome

Forty four years ago, in 1973, we founded Wilderness Adventures, combining our love for teaching young adults with our passion for the American wilderness and adventure. Today, it is humbling for us to realize the extent and magnitude of the positive impact we have made on the lives of so many students. As we enter our forty fourth season, our alumni base has grown to over 25,000 former students, many of which are second-generation, including our own two sons, Chris and Nick. As experienced directors, but especially as parents, we understand the wide range of

to a far away place. We are excited about their becoming independent, more responsible

leaders, the compatibility of their group, and the wholesomeness of their fellow trip members. We pledge to you that we will plan your son or daughter’s trip, prepare their leaders, and select their trip-mates with the same thoughtfulness and care that we provided for our own sons. Finally, we believe that the Wilderness Adventures experience is truly exceptional. Because

taken great care in preparing this thorough catalog. We invite you to discover Wilderness Adventures and we are hopeful that you and your son or daughter will be able to share with us the value of our life’s work through an experience with us this summer.

Sincerely,Mike and Helen Cottingham

Our Philosophy

We also knew that through an intimate outdoor experience, our students would learn to become peer leaders, acquire a responsible appreciation for the natural wonders of our planet and develop a newfound environmental ethic to carry with them throughout their lives.

groups, we have found that our summer experiences have had a profound life-long value and resonance for our students beyond even our wildest dreams.

such as our international destinations, community service, and language components to our trips, our highly successful founding vision, philosophy, and purpose has not changed as we enter our 44th summer season.

As educators, we founded Wilderness Adventures in 1973 with the burning desire to capture the attention of our students through fun and exciting outdoor activities in the most beautiful outdoor areas on our planet. We knew that a small group experience in the wilderness would serve as a valuable catalyst to enable our students to become more responsible, tolerant, and self-confident as well as develop a powerful, all-inclusive community.

Safety

Over the past 44 years, we have had over 25,000 students and have had an excellent safety record. This

our highly detailed protocol for conducting our trips,

our more technical activities. Our approach and commitment to safety and risk management requires an ongoing process of re-evaluation, learning, adjusting, and improving in order to enhance safety without losing the adventure qualities of our trips. Our risk management plan has always been conservative in order to minimize potential problems. As an example, overnight individual or group solos (commonly referred to as walk outs) are not part of our curriculum, while all of our highly technical activities such as rock climbing, mountaineering, and whitewater components are under the direction of

The perfect outdoor adventure program would provide a meaningful and exciting experience along with an unconditional guarantee of safety. However, safety is not something that any program, including Wilderness Adventures, can guarantee. Even the best-planned outdoor activities with the most experienced and well-trained leaders include inherent risks, hazards and dangers. Students and their families need to understand that participating in adventure travel activities both domestically and abroad, involves inherent or other risks that cannot necessarily be predicted or controlled. We teach our students to respect risks as they learn new skills. We also teach them how to evaluate and minimize risks and how to make responsible decisions so that they share in the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others in the program. Please give us a call if you have questions about certain programs or activities and the risks associated with them.

Since 1973, safety has been the primary focus of every Wilderness Adventures trip and is a major consideration of every family looking at a wilderness or outdoor program for their son or daughter.

What Sets Us Apart

THEOUTSTANDINGDIFFERENCE

When we founded Wilderness Adventures 44 years ago, our program was a new and unique concept.

many programs have attempted to duplicate a Wilderness Adventures experience, we are proud that we

program. As owners and directors, we have had more personal “hands on” experience than any directors

receives the same personal attention we have given our own sons.OUR PERSONAL ATTENTION

and directors of Wilderness Adventures for the past 44 years, we are proud of the fact that we have personally met nearly all of our 25,000 alumni either during our winter travels or during the summer.Since 1973, we have personally greeted nearly every domestic student upon their arrival. We have visited

sharing their successes during their trip ending banquets.

Choosing a summer program can be confusing, especially when so many new companies are appearing every year. What makes Wilderness Adventures outstanding? What clearly separates Wilderness Adventures from all other similar-appearing programs? We encourage you to consider the following information before making such an important decision for your son or daughter.

1-800-533-2281 www.wildernessadventures.com8

OUR UNMATCHED EXPERIENCENo other similar appearing program has had more experience than Wilderness Adventures conducting safe and successful outdoor adventure travel experiences for young people. Over the past 43 years, more than 25,000 young people have participated in over 2,400 trip groups.OUR SMALL COMPATIBLE GROUPSOur trips are conducted in small groups, where each individual becomes a valued and important contributor to their traveling community. Typically our groups range from 10 to 15 students with 2 to 3 leaders, always maintaining the lowest student-to-leader ratios. We spend a lot of time balancing trips by age, gender and maturity in order to ensure the best possible group experience. At Wilderness Adventures, you will not be lost in a mass of 30 or more people. For more information about the values and importance of small group teenage adventure travel, please visit wildernessadventures.com.OUR EXCEPTIONAL AND EXCLUSIVE DESTINATIONSWhere we are licensed to operate our domestic programs on federal lands clearly separates Wilderness Adventures from all other similar-appearing programs, hands down. People with knowledge of federal lands, our national parks and wilderness areas, are always amazed by the extent and quality of the exclusive destinations where we are allowed to operate. Please be sure to read “Our Last Best Places” on pages 88 & 89 and visit wildernessadventures.com for complete descriptions and photos of these remarkable destinations.

OUR LIMITED VEHICLE TRAVELAdventurous young adults don’t want to spend their summers looking at scenery from a van window. Because of our extensive and exclusive federal permits, we are able to conduct our domestic adventures in much smaller geographical locations with far less time-consuming vehicle travel than any other similar-appearing program. OUR ENTHUSIASTIC STUDENTSThe key to a great trip is a group of students who are highly motivated and enthusiastic to participate. Wilderness Adventures is not the type of program where students are sent against their will or to be rehabilitated. Our trips are full of positive, wholesome young people who are fun to be around.OUR MINIMAL USE OF SUBCONTRACTORSBecause of the shear breadth of our domestic permits (see pages 88 & 89), we

are not forced into using subcontractors for any of our domestic backpacking, hiking or sea kayaking trip components as most similar-appearing programs must

program. It also ensures us the comfort of knowing that our students are led by our own leaders who are philosophically committed to our program goals, ideals and high moral standards. No other similar-appearing program has as much control over who leads their students than we do at Wilderness Adventures.

OUR OUTSTANDING LEADERS

is a result of our years of unmatched experience, our professional reputation, our minimal use of subcontractors, and our amazing, federally-permitted destinations

“This summer has been the most exciting growing experience of my life. The turning point was Mt. Rainier when I decided I was going to the top. When I got there I wrote a message to myself in case I forgot. ‘I can do anything I want, remember.’”

Food, Fun & Friendships

FOODWithout a doubt, great food is an essential and fun part of every Wilderness Adventures trip. When we’re in the backcountry, you’ll be eating simple but tasty meals and there will always be plenty of food to go around. You’ll enjoy things like chicken fajitas, pancakes, burritos, omelets, pizza, pasta, and even our famous Thanksgiving dinner! For snacks, you’ll always have your trusty bag of GORP (trail mix). You and your trip-mates will divide into cook crews for both front and backcountry meals and

you will be responsible for making some delicious meals we can all enjoy eating together, family

For our international trips, you’ll eat indigenous dishes, with local ingredients, either prepared by locals or by ourselves. Whether you’re in Australia, Peru, Switzerland, or Costa Rica you’ll be

tucker, ceviche, fondue, trout and tortillas. Whatever we eat on a Wilderness Adventures trip, it will always be great and you’ll never be hungry!FUNThere is no shortage of fun and laughter on any Wilderness Adventures trip and it is usually non-stop. We have designed these trips to be the most enjoyable time of your life. Come prepared to play hilarious games, make up silly songs, dance beneath the stars, take breathtaking dips into icy cold lakes, and let your hair down as you enjoy each other’s camaraderie day and night.

Our adventures are fun, exciting and challenging because they involve the active participation of each individual on a daily basis. Your personal contributions to your group at mealtime, along the trail and around the campfire are what make the Wilderness Adventures experience so special.

“Callen’s adventure was everything we could have hoped for and more. Our daughter returned to us with a broader and deeper confidence in herself as well as a wonderful appreciation for nature.”

— Claudia Wainwright

“Alex’s experience with Wilderness Adventures was extraordinary. More than the sights and backcountry living experience, you gave Alex the opportunity to challenge himself physically and mentally in a way that has given him coping skills and insights that will carry him through many life experiences.”

— Nathan Garrison

FRIENDSHIPSThe most memorable and lasting aspect of your summer with us will be the many close, lifetime friends you will make. It all starts with your small group and you will be amazed at how quickly you will develop into such a close-knit family unit. From our “ice breaking” games on arrival day to our

Mike and Helen Cottingham are the founders, owners, and directors of Wilderness Adventures. The enjoyment and satisfaction they gained from living in wilderness environments and teaching prompted them to found Wilderness Adventures in 1972 with the hope that many young men and women would be given an opportunity to have a similar experience. Since its inception, their program has met with extraordinary success and has grown steadily to become the oldest, and most experienced, outdoor adventure travel program for young adults.

“When I think of Wilderness Adventures, I think of family. As a WA camper, I gained so much more than just what the fun and exhilarating activities had to offer. I gained a support system that encouraged me to be the best I could be, and a new family that appreciated me for who I was. I returned home with a more confident self. It’s those three things that made me want to return to Wilderness Adventures as a leader. I wanted to give future students a similar experience and give back to the program that changed my life forever and gave me a second family.”

“Wilderness Adventures trips are based around very concrete goals: hiking 10 days into the Alaskan backcountry, climbing Mt. Rainier, building a new section of trail in Yellowstone national park. What you come away with is often less tangible and harder to explain, but perhaps more significant. At WA you are living close to a small group of people, striving and, at times, struggling towards a common goal, and living in a natural world that is largely indifferent to your presence. This teaches you things you cannot learn in a lifestyle that is constantly fragmented by technology. Leading for Wilderness Adventures, I felt like I truly was able to influence a student’s perspective: encouraging them to live intentionally, be courageous when confronted by adversity, and strive for the well-being of everyone around them.”

You won’t find any other program with a more talented, dynamic and professional group of leaders than ours. Our leaders all have a proven track record when it comes to past achievements. Most have played varsity sports and captained their teams in both high school and college. They have served as volunteers for campus organizations, have been peer counselors, and have served as student government officers.

Leadership

Our leaders have been their class valedictorians, nearly all have received their undergraduate degrees and many are already pursuing their post-graduate careers in medicine, law, engineering, business, the arts, and education. Our leaders are high achievers, with a wealth of leadership experience who all share a passion for working with our students in the out of doors.Wilderness Adventures’ leaders are far more than guides or instructors. Although their primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of every student, each Wilderness Adventures leader is a wonderful role model. “Having experienced Wilderness Adventures as both a participant and a leader, l really now understand how people learn about themselves and become the best they can be. I love the sense of community that develops over the course of a trip. Strangers the first day of the trip, the wilderness quickly binds diverse individuals together. It is amazing how, without modern distractions, friendships thrive and continue on for many years even after those wild places are left behind.”

“To me, Wilderness Adventures has meant an introduction to a deeper, richer, sweeter way of living that I might never have discovered had I not been a student on the Jackson Hole trip in 2006. The three weeks I spent exploring the Wyoming wilderness with new friends forever changed the way I perceived the natural world, my relationships with others, and myself. As a leader for Wilderness Adventures I have again been able to tap into the sense of inherent self worth and absolute bliss that only time spent in the wilderness can bring me. To have facilitated and shared in that experience with middle and high schoolers for the past two summers has without a doubt been one of the greatest joys of my life.”

“My favorite things about my three summers leading for Wilderness Adventures were helping my students meet challenges they never thought they could overcome and facilitating teamwork which led to lifelong friendships. Most of my students started the summer worried about making friends and finished the trip with a tearful goodbye and plans to visit their newfound friends on the other side of the country. I believe that unplugging from modern society and spending time living in nature with their peers is the ideal setting to teach life skills that many young people

On both our domestic and international trips, we’ll occasionally use trains, ferries or planes as well. Regardless of how we travel, our goal is to spend 95% of our time adventuring and only 5% moving from one place to another. Each trip carries a modest but helpful library covering both cultural and natural history topics.

Be sure to read more about our food on page 10.HOW YOU’LL COMMUNICATE Because we want everyone to commit to each other so that we can all have a close and fun group experience, communication will be limited to one call home on arrival day. Our leaders will send periodic email updates when possible.HOW YOU’LL SLEEP You will sleep well this summer because you’ll be so busy being challenged during our daytime activities. On our domestic trips, you’ll sleep in our lightweight two to three person mountain tents. On our international trips you’ll be sleeping in hostels, small inns, aboard sailboats, or mountain huts. On all of our trips, if you so choose, you’ll have the opportunity to sleep out under a blanket of stars more brilliant than you’ve ever seen before.WHAT WE’LL EXPECT OF YOU We want you to have the time of your life on the trip of your choice. To do so, you will need to arrive both mentally and physically prepared. How much you enjoy your experience will be directly related to how well conditioned you are. If you are not playing sports currently, we strongly suggest you prepare with a regular jogging, bicycling or swimming program.Lastly, we expect you to arrive with an enthusiastic and positive attitude. From backpacking trips in the Tetons or Washington’s Cascades to sea kayaking trips in Yellowstone or Washington’s San Juan Islands, numerous less-fortunate but motivated young adults have an opportunity to experience the wonders of our planet while gaining valuable leadership skills. If you would like to help us with our mission by partially sponsoring a deserving young person with a donation of dollars, airline mileage, etc, please contact us and ask about The Hole Idea

MINIMUM-IMPACT ETHICSFrom our beginning in 1973, we have been committed to teaching young people about the joys of living in the out-of-doors without the luxuries we all take for granted. While the spectacular outdoor ecosystems we have visited have been wonderful classrooms, we have always been sensitive toward our potential environmental impact to them and the need to leave these special places better than we found them. We began teaching minimum-impact camping ethics years before the concept became the standard for all outdoor schools and we are proud of that legacy.

SUSTAINABLE TRAVELAs our program has become more global, we have expanded our mission by teaching sustainable travel and the importance of supporting local communities and economies through our low-impact travel on foot, by small boats, and in small groups. We are always welcomed visitors in foreign lands.

Since then, our groups have taken on more comprehensive projects, from constructing classrooms in the small villages of Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Fiji, to improving habitat for endangered sea turtles in the Galapagos Islands. Today, every Wilderness Adventures group, including all programs not focused on service, do their parts through small, but important clean-up projects on the lands we travel through. Giving back is emphasized on every trip.

Our Experience:Forty-three years, 25,000 alumni and 2,400 trip groups is quite an accomplishment. No other similar appearing program can come close to our wealth of experience conducting

the same life changing experiences as their parents before them. SMALL GROUPS: We’ve found that 10 to 15 students is the ideal group size, because individuals become an important part of each traveling community. It’s big enough for lots of fun and friendships, yet small enough for excellent supervision and mutual support. STUDENT OWNERSHIP: You will be actively involved in a fun, close-working group where everyone contributes. While your trip will be guided by your leaders, it will be run by you as leader of the day, or by preparing meals, leading activities, cleaning up, and doing laundry. EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS: Bright, charismatic, and supportive leaders will guide your trip. They will be positive role models, who focus on creating fun and wholesome

CAREFUL ADMISSIONS: All of your trip-mates will have been carefully selected and your group will consist of healthy, active young people who are all eager to contribute to your summer experience. HIGH EXPECTATIONS: We’re going to expect a lot from you and your trip-mates, like doing your fair share of the work, having a positive attitude and playing by the rules. Our groups are wholesome environments where everyone is valued, welcomed and supported.

THE GROUP COMES FIRST: You’ll have an amazing summer because we value cooperation and teamwork. You’ll learn essential leadership skills by doing more than what is asked of you, focusing on the well being of others around you and supporting your trip-mates. These are valuable, lifelong leadership skills you will use throughout life. PHONE AND INTERNET FREE: This summer you will discover the freedom of being phone and Internet free. No calls, except emergencies, no texts, no Facebook. Can you do it? Well, we’ve been doing it since 1973 and it has worked wonderfully. You’re not going to believe how much fun it is to make lasting friendships and experience new places, cultures, and activities away from electronic distractions. A new world awaits you.

Our Last Best Places

EXPLORE AMERICA’S CROWN JEWELS

The places where we are licensed to expedition in the United States clearly separates Wilderness Adventures from all other wilderness travel programs for young adults and enables us to conduct far superior programs. No other program for young people can match either the variety or the grandeur of the special areas our trips are conducted in each summer.

When we established Wilderness Adventures in 1972, we sought operating licenses in the most spectacularly beautiful national parks and national forest wilderness areas in America and fortunately, permits to these places were still available in the early 1970s. Every year since then, our groups have had the opportunity to experience amazingly spectacular country not available to other programs. Our permits are truly special and with the privilege of being able to take young people to these wonderful places, we also recognize our tremendous responsibility to see that these areas remain preserved and protected for future generations. Our expedition groups learn to respect these amazing destinations and are taught how to enjoy them without leaving an impact or trace of their visits to them.

Last Best Places as we like to call them. We have listed below each area, its size in acres and the year it was formally protected by the United States Congress. Why Kids Need Nature

A Wilderness Adventures experience is one of the soundest investments you can make in your child’s future. As our access to technology increases, it becomes absolutely essential to give our kids the mental power to compete on a global scale. Ironically, the same technology that is flattening the labor market across the globe threatens our ability to innovate and creatively compete.

“The future will belong to the nature-smart – those individuals, families, business and leaders who develop a deep understanding of the transformative power of the

natural world and balance the virtual with the real.” -Author Richard Louv

of his best-selling Last Child in the Woodscatalog in which he championed outdoor adventure programming, and argued that time spent outdoors is an essential element of a child’s upbringing because of its ability to develop coping skills, cognitive functioning and capacity for imagination.

“Facebook didn’t exist. Twitter was still a sound. The Cloud was still in the sky, 4G was a parking space, LinkedIn was a prison, applications were what you sent to college and Skype was a typo,” says journalist Thomas L. Friedman,” and that’s when

That Used to Be Us,

raises the bar of competitiveness in the global labor market to new heights. Even

careers that were once considered highly skilled, specialized or locally dependent can now be outsourced. As a result, the ability to act creatively is the last remaining tool

another. In his new book, The Nature Principle:

, Louv’s message is that our success depends on our ability to focus and think creatively despite the technological distractions of our daily lives. He cites time spent outdoors as the antidote to the barrage of pings and status updates that feed our inboxes, our Facebook walls, and our brains with an addictive dependence on evermore rapid iterations of technological stimulation. The solution isn’t to live without

our minds to achieve focus and develop creative thought processes. Technological

important. As technology enters our lives through evermore clever channels, we must innovate the ways in which we access the natural world. “The more high-tech we become, the more nature we need,” Louv says. Since 1973, over 25,000 families have recognized and invested in the developmental value of a Wilderness Adventures experience. While we have led the industry with exciting new environments, activities and destinations for the past 43 years, our goals have remained the cornerstone of our steadfast motivation and our students’ success. Wilderness Adventures fosters a connection to the natural world, teaches group problem solving skills and empowers our students with the mental focus to think creatively in their daily lives. We are honored to have contributed this timeless legacy that has never been more contemporary or necessary. Richard Louv is the author of eight books about nature and development including and .
