Types of TripsA2Z Adventures is a small but fully dedicated company. We believe that all our trips are, to some extent, customized to the individual needs of each of our guests. On average we have 8 people on our trips. This way we feel like we can dedicate our full attention to each and every one of our guests. A2Z Adventures offers different types of tours (Guided, Supported and Self-guided) and in all of them we assure a high level of service. On a Guided Tour you have a tour leader fluent in English plus another local guide; on a SupportedTour a guide also fluent in English (driving a support van) will be around in each corner to assist you and transfer your luggage to the next inn; on a Self-Guided Tour we will be available 24 hours through a phone support line, while you follow your route with the help of a GPS, map and route directions. In some tours we even provide a mobile phone to call us for free and receive text messages with the weather forecast. All this with no extra charge! In all our tours, we distribute detailed information about the itinerary and the country you are visiting and, in cycling tours, route directions. This will not be standard documentation, but carefully revised documents for each individual trip. Even if we have done the trip a million times, all documentation is reviewed and adapted to YOUR unique trip. This is what we consider first class service!

Custom TripsWe can run a private Biking or Hiking Trip for a couple, a group of friends or a company. All that is needed is to get together a group of people, pick one of our trips and choose the date of the trip. We can even make small changes on the itinerary or on the trip’s length to meet some specific needs or interests. You want to do something completely different? No problem, just tell us what you are looking for and we will try to make it real!

Social and Environmental ActionWe have assumed our social and environmental responsibility from the first moment. A2Z Adventures has been working together with local guides, in the respect for local traditions and cultures, in order to minimize the impact of our activities and, at the same time, develop local economy. Because this is not enough, 1% of our revenues are donated to grassroots, social and environmental groups that make a difference in their local communities. In the last years, together with our clients, we have financed several projects in Portugal (Decano-Castelo Novo, Quercus-Castelo Branco, ATN-Castelo Rodrigo), Chile (Omora Fundation-Navarino), India (the Sun School for Kargyak) and Morocco (ESOM association).

Ethical CodeA2Z Adventures promotes the contact with authen-tic realities, encouraging nature and world cultural heritage protection by the awareness and consciousness of travellers. Our trips are made with small groups because we are conscientious of the consequences related with massive tourism. We respect and involve the communities creating partnerships, such as the A2Z Selected Partner, in order to better understand their culture and preserve their integrity.A2Z Adventures assumes the responsibility of privacy protection of the clients, using images and testimonies only when authorised. For A2Z Adventures client’s satisfaction is essential and their opinions are seriously taken in consideration.

A2Z Selected PartnersWhen we travel abroad, we try hard to work with local people and organizations to help the local economy grow, encourage local services excellence and allow a better understanding of local culture. A2Z Selected Partners program recognizes A2Z Adventures local partners that, by collaborating with A2Z Adventures, have achieved our absolute trust. Travelling with our selected partners is as if you were travelling with one of our guides: the same passion and professionalism.

Our Inns

We don’t base our lodging choices simply on a star rating system. Sometimes they are five or four star hotels and sometimes they are small, but very unique, inns or manor houses. Our trips are divided in five different categories: Budget, Value, Comfort, Selected and Luxury, this way you know better the price/quality ratio. In Portugal, we like to stay in historical buildings like old monasteries, convents and farm houses. Imagine the charm and beauty of staying at a 14th century convent, while enjoying the amenities of a five star hotel. And then there’s the food. You will taste the best local recipes and savour the best wines from each place we visit. These are some of the very special inns where you will have the chance to stayin one of the many tours we run in Portugal.

Discover the many charms of Portugal

Portugal is a magical country with many different landscapes. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Spain, it is Europe's westernmost and oldest country, full of history and traditions. We have divided Portugal into five major areas considering their uniqueness in landscape and local traditions. Those regions are: Douro and Gerês (North), Atlantic Coast, Schist Villages, Histori-cal Villages (Center) and Algarve and Alentejo (South). In the North of Portugal we have the only Portuguese National Park, a large area where nature is at its pure state. Along the Douro River one can find the amazing Douro valley with the immense vineyards in endless terraces delightful to see.In the Center of Portugal, on the west side we find the precious Atlantic Coast, a part of Portugal teeming with life, most of it devoted to the sea. In this area you will find the two larger cities, Porto and Lisbon. Towards the inner center of Portugal, you will find the lost Schist Villages, hidden in the mountains. These small old villages preserved very unique traditions and the simple way of living of old times.

Near the Spanish border you will find the 12th century Historical Villages, once a defensive area against invaders.Nowadays castles remain to retell those histories and let you travel back in time. This area also includes Serra da Estrela, Portuguese mainland highest mountain, and International Tagus Natural Park and its Geopark. In the sunny South of Portugal, Alentejo and Algarve await for you. Alentejo’s typical rolling hills with gentle landscapes and nice little towns are a calm place to visit. Algarve goes much beyond the most crowed beaches. The vast fauna and flora make this a birdwatching paradise, and the hills of Algarve offer wonderful views of the wilderness. In the following pages you will discover in more detail each of these areas of Portugal. There you can also find the A2Z Adventures trips that will take to the best places in walking or biking tours or in a short adventure full of activities around a carefully selected lodging. We love our country and we are sure you will enjoy it too with A2Z Adventures.

Pure Nature > This is the perfect setting for lovers of nature in its pure state. Here lies the only National Park in Portugal - the Peneda-Gerês National Park, integrated in the European PAN Park network, the only one in the Iberian Peninsula and part of the twelve existing throughout Europe. We recommend hiking by the old trails used by shepherds, among oaks and magnificent water-falls. Pathways that connect several villages in contact with the local culture and daily life of this beautiful area of the country. Learn about the ancient arts and traditions, such as handcrafted ironwork. Be amazed while visiting Pitões das Júnias, one of the highest villages of Portugal, and walk to the top of S. João da Fraga where you will have all the splendour of the National Park at your feet. Here also lies the Douro Valley with its immense vineyards, a landscape classified as world heritage by UNESCO. Considered the 7th Best Sustainable Tourism Destination in the world, here is produced the famous Port wine and some of the best domestic table wines in the world, which will be the delight of wine lovers. Visit a charming Douro winery farm, where you can stroll through the terraced vineyards and glimpse the curves of the Douro River. Travelling on Douro River boats, walking or if you pedal through the steep vineyards Douro will remain in your mem-ory. If you have a longer stay, you can visit the historical villages with their castles and stone houses that maintain the same appearance for centuries.

Quinta Nova, where you can relax in the vineyards and admire the Douro Valley.>

Portugal by the ocean > Discover the Atlantic coast of Portugal, between the two largest cities of Portugal, Porto and Lisbon! Awaiting for you is the «Atlantic Road», a set of bike paths by the sea, that allow you to enjoy the magnificent beaches of the west coast of Portugal. Along the coast in Aveiro district (the “Venice” of Portugal), you may visit the Natural Reserve of Dunas de São Jacinto, a privileged location for flora and fauna observation. The beaches of Barra and Costa Nova, with their picturesque wooden houses (traditional houses with coloured stripes), will remain in your memory! In Mira beach where the haystacks dominate the landscape, you can see the artisan fishing entitled Xávega Art. The royal pine forest of Leiria, the Shrine of Fátima and the monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça - UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are some of the highlights that culminate with the medieval town of Óbidos.Lisbon, the city of the seven hills, is worth a visit to discover its secrets and charms. Alfama, Bair-ro Alto and Mouraria neighbourhoods are not to be missed, where you can hear singing Fado. Dis-cover the city on foot, by bike, from the River aboard a sailboat or ... in an old tram! Not far away are Sintra Mountain and the Pena Palace with its magnificent gardens, UNESCO World Heritage Site. This makes Portugal and Lisbon to be in the top international tourist recommendations!

Crossing Portugal north to south > Cross the country starting in the North Spanish border and finish in Sagres, the south-westernmost point of Europe. 1200 km of off-road cycling across forest tracks, gravel roads and steep single tracks on cliff tops. Cycling from hotel door to hotel door, overnight stays in the best hotels in the region, excellent food and relaxed atmosphere all around. From Bragança to Sagres, passing through small villages where stories and history have stopped in time, meeting the friendly people of rural Portugal and tasting the gastronomic riches of the country from North to South.Pedaling from the Trás os Montes region to the Alentejo, never losing sight of the border, then turning towards the Costa Vicentina coast line, all the way to Cabo de S. Vicente. When you get to the end of the TransPortugal you will leave behind a country of strong contrasts, but the images you will have collected will remain permanently recorded in your memories, and in the memories of all those who took up the challenge and pedaled through the depths of Por-tugal with you. Images of the locals with skin weathered by the sun, who greet us as we pass by, invite us to join them at the table, to enjoy food that tastes of the land it was grown on and where time still moves slowly, leaving us time to savor life.
