Widener’s locker room, refurbished prior to the 2006 season, sits underneath the stands at Les-lie C. Quick Jr. Stadium. The stadium, home of Widener’s football team since 1994, is in its seventh year as home of our men’s lacrosse pro-gram. The move was made following the install-ment of a new FieldTurf surface in 2005. Seat-ing for over 4,000 spectators is available. The stadium also serves as home for Widener’s soccer and track & field squads.

Brendan Dawson • Head Coach Brendan Dawson is in his first season as men’s lacrosse coach at Widener Uni-versity. Dawson arrives after serving one season as the first men’s lacrosse coach at Aurora University, building the program from scratch. The Spartans ended the campaign 11-6 and qualified for the

Midwest Men’s Lacrosse Conference Tournament as a No. 3 seed after being picked seventh in the preseason poll. Eight players from that squad were picked all-conference and Dawson was named the league’s Coach of the Year. Dawson recruited over 30 players to compete last season and an additional 25 to come to Aurora this year. He was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, handled game management duties for other sports and developed the Spartan Academic Greatness plan to help guide his student-athletes.

Nick Mooney is in his first season as an assistant coach for the Pride. Mooney had an exceptional four-year career at Salisbury on defense, winning national championships in 2008 and 2011 as well as playing in the NCAA final in 2010. Mooney in 2011 was crowned an All-American as well as first team All-Capital Athletic Conference and ECAC. He also has worked for the Tom Brown Youth Sports Camp, the Interboro Lacrosse Camp and the Mini-Bucs Football Camp in Glenolden, PA. Mooney graduated Salisbury in 2011 with a B.S. in Exercise Science and a minor in Coaching.

Mike Talarico is in his sixth year in his second stint as Widener assistant coach. Talarico came back in 2008 to help Widener match the school record for most victories (13) and notch its second NCAA Tournament victory. He was a part of two MAC championship teams as an assistant from 2001-04. He left the first time to become head coach at Lycoming College, where he served two years and was tabbed MAC Coach of the Year in 2005. Talarico entered coaching after a standout career for Drew University (1998-2001). Graduating as the school’s second all-time leading scorer, he was named first team All-MAC three times after being selected second team all-league as a freshman. A captain in 2000 and 2001, he was picked Drew’s Athlete of the Year in 2001 and drafted by the Washington Power of the National Lacrosse League the same year. Talarico works in Widener’s Development Office.

Nick Politarhos, one of the greatest players in the history of the program, is in his first season as an assistant coach for Widener. Politarhos quite simply put together a solid career as a shut-down defenseman and an all-around leader. He was a three-time first team All-Middle Atlantic Conference selection and in 2011 was named second team ECAC South/Metro All-Region. Politarhos also was a two-time Preseason Honorable Mention All-America according to Inside Lacrosse Magazine. He played on three conference champions, leading Wid-ener to a school-record 15 victories and a 13-game winning streak in 2011. Politarhos also was a two-time member of the MAC Academic Honor Roll and in 2009 was named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. Politarhos graduated Widener in 2011 with a degree in Hospitality Management.

Cory Malampy, a two-time all-conference player who helped the Pride to three MAC championships, is in his second season as an assistant coach for his alma mater. He posted a solid career at attack by closing with 110 goals, 47 assists and 157 points. All of those numbers fall just outside Widener’s top 10. Malampy was tabbed second team all-league in 2009, ending second on the team with 28 goals, 39 points, two game-winning goals and three man-up goals. He also earned the honor in 2010, closing tied for fourth in the conference with 38 goals, fifth with 52 points, first with five man-down goals and second on the team with 14 assists. A captain his last two years for the Pride, Malampy in 2009 and 2010 participated for the U.S. Developmental Lacrosse Team and played throughout North America. Malampy graduated Widener in 2010 with a B.S. in Marketing.

Shane Crossett is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Pride. Crossett had a solid career with SUNY Cortland and in 2011 was named an All-American, first team All-SUNYAC, first team All-New York State and first team All-ECAC during a year in which he was a captain. Crossett also was a member of the Red Dragons’ national championship squad in 2009. He spent the fall of 2011 working as an event and facility management intern for the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, helping manage a slew a events for the University. He also has been an event assistant with the Cortland Lacrosse JV Jamboree and with SUNY Cortland’s Athletic Department. Crossett graduated SUNY Cortland in 2011 with a B.S. in Sport Management.

He also served one year as an assistant coach at Dickinson in 2009 and was a graduate assistant coach at Salisbury in 2007 and 2008. Dawson had a strong four-year career at Salisbury, helping the team to Division III NCAA championships in 2003 and 2004. He was named first team All-Capital Athletic Conference in 2002, was a member of the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee from 2003-04, was picked team captain his last two years and helped the Seagulls notch a 58-7 record during his time. Dawson graduated Salisbury in 2004 with a B.A. in History and Political Science. He got his M.A. in Teaching from Salisbury in 2008.

Widener’s run through the Middle Atlantic Conference has been one of the more memorable ones in any sport. Amassing 13 league titles and nine trips to the NCAA Tournament, the Pride’s legacy has been cemented for many years to come. But complacency is not is the team’s vocabulary as the squad looks to hold on to the torch in 2012. The two-time reigning league champions will rely heavily on junior attack Johnny Casey for his continued scoring punch. A first team all-league pick last season and the 2009 MAC Rookie of the Year, the Glenside, PA native had an-other strong campaign last season in closing tied for the team lead with 50 points and 31 goals. Junior Josh Fox also is an important factor on the frontline as he was one of five on the squad picked first team all-conference. Also looking to continue his stellar play, he finished tied for the team lead with 50 points and 31 goals as well as leading the squad with four game-winning goals. Sophomore Robert Clemens had an impressive debut last season and seeks more of the same in 2012. Looking for bigger and better things on attack, Cle-mens a season ago led the team with 20 assists and was third with 37 points. Senior Michael Bassani can not be forgotten on a talent-laden attack, especially after he was picked second team All-MAC. He closed the year seventh on the squad with 13 goals and 22 points. Senior Nate Meyer and junior Brian Einstein also look for more playing time on attack. The midfield also is a talented group possessing great leaders. Senior Mark Kane gives the team many options and could be one of many looking to take face-offs this season. Senior Ryan Shewell, an Honorable Mention all-conference pick in 2010, also is one on the midfield who will help the Pride in many ways. He looks to regain the form from 2010, when he closed with 10 goals and 18 assists. Junior Ryan Eidenshink could be more of a factor this season after ending 2011 with 11 goals. Sophomore Craig Hunsberger could be the man on face-offs after winning exactly half of his draws last season to go with 43 ground balls. Juniors Ryan Carlin and Stephen Lick along with sophomores Timothy Winslow, Dan Kaplan and Eric Breuninger also will be keys at midfield. Junior Mike Stoner and sophomore Ben Vessels return as long-stick midfielders and should see even more playing time in their roles this year. The defense takes a huge hit with the loss of three-time all-league standout Nick Politarhos as well as all-conference honoree Matt Par-rott, but Widener is confident it has the players to fill the void. Junior Charlie Bytheway was picked a captain for this season after starting 14 games a season ago on defense. He will have to step up even more for a squad which last year allowed a mere 110 goals over 18 games, closing second in the league with a 6.2 goals-against aver-age. Senior Derek Joostema along with sophomores James Constantine, Evan Wenger, Andrew Vogel, Paul Berger, Nicholas Wolber, Walker Dunne, Troy Gebhart and Kristopher Masterson also look for time on defense. The goalkeeping got a huge lift with the play of sophomore Mac Nestler, who was picked Honorable Mention All-MAC. He closed eighth in the MAC with a 6.01 goals against average and eighth with a .612 save percentage in playing just under half the team’s minutes. Junior Bobby Schluter also will vie for all-league honors after going 9-2 to match his win total from his freshman year. Senior Tommy Hoopes also will see time in goal this season. The Pride welcome 15 newcomers in Mike D’Aloia, Andrew Buckley, John Holland, Nick Chambers, Bryan Ziegler, Trevor Alspach,

Mike Mitchell, Cam Carney, Rayd Barqawi, Eric Moreau, Kyle Blakemore, Casey Decker, Kurt Endlein, Zach Hopkins and Kevin Shaddock. Widener opens its season February 25 against SUNY Cortland and play in the new-look Commonwealth Conference (see page 13) begins April 5 at home versus Albright. The regular season ends April 28 at home against Elizabethtown. The league’s top four teams compete in the conference tournament May 1 and 3. The champion in the Commonwealth and Freedom Conferences play May 5 for the MACs automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

The “New” Middle Atlantic ConferenceThe Middle Atlantic Conference takes on a new look for men’s lacrosse this season as the league splits into the Commonwealth and Freedom Conferences. A similar move was done for most sports in the league starting with the 2000-01 academic year. Widener is in the Commonwealth Conference and that includes Albright, Alvernia, Elizabethtown, Lebanon Valley, Lycoming and Messiah. The top four teams meet in the conference semifinals Tuesday, May 1 and the winners play in the final Thursday, May 3. The two conference champions meet in the MAC final Saturday, May 5 with the winner getting the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The higher seed will host the MAC final. If the seeds are the same, the Commonwealth champion is the home team.
