1 You Can Run But You Can't Hide

The wind was moaning in the eavestroughing and rattling windows in their frames. I jumped with fear every time the floorboards creaked. I squeezed myicy, silver-blue eyes tightly and clasped my small hands firmly against my ears, trying to block out the terrifying sounds, as my long black hair fell over my eyes. They were coming and I knew it; if only I knew where to hide! I had been runningfor so long that I had even lost track of time. I only went by the positioning of thesun, now: it was midnight. Why did this have to happen? This only gave them anexcuse to come after us! No... not 'us', me . There is no longer 'us'. My parentsare killed for their strange species, she is gone and now it is my turn; or so theysay.

I am the ten year old son of the most prestigious and powerful of our kind: weare the Level Star Vampires. My father, Amon von Haute, and my mother,Kalypso von Haute, were now dead, though. It was a fire set by our most hatedenemies: the Hunters. The Hunters are considered the most capable candidatesfor such a job because of their lack of fear. They had been able to break into our 18th century mansion unnoticed and set a fire in one of the spare rooms on thetop level. One of the kinder maids helped me escape, but she too was burned. I

ran to a small abandoned house. In the end, I was able to escape.

After catching my breath, I started out again. I cringed as the back door of thelittle house creaked as I slowly opened it. Silently peering out, I tiptoed my wayout the back and into the nearest alleyway, making sure to keep to the shadows.

I heard a soft crack in the distance and froze. I held my breath as I listened for something; anything. I listened for a few more seconds and – there it was again !I let out a squeak and quickly turned the corner and-

- ran straight into David Carlson, the Head Hunter. My eyes were as wide assaucers as I slowly lifted my head to look at the man. He was a scary man, withhis long, blond hair pulled into a high ponytail, dark, black eyes and hiscompletely black attire. He smirked at my terrified face and lunged for me. I wastoo slow and he swung his arm to connect with the back of my head. The lastthing I remembered was a sharp pain and then darkness.

2 The PriestI woke up again in what seemed to be a cellar. Taking a look around, I noticed arather large crucifix nailed to the southern wall. My mind felt like a cloud at thetime, but I soon realized that I must be in the village church. I snapped my headto the right as someone walked into the room. I gasped as I recognized alongtime friend of our family: Father Coraway. He was clad in his normal priestlyrobes and had a small rosary wrapped around his left forearm as he carried amedium-sized clay bowl filled with, what looked like, water. His face looked quitegrim as he walked closer to where I lay. Holding the bowl in the air above myhead – as an offering to a God– he started to chant a prayer at a fast andconsistent pace. Tears welled up in my eyes as I recognized the prayer: he wastrying to purify me. For a mortal, that is a blessing, but for a vampire, that isimmediate death.

I saw his eyes close, as he was about to pour the holy water on my head. I wascrying full force now. Raising my head, I pleaded with him to spare me for I stillhad not accomplished what I needed to do. It couldn't be over for me, not yet.He stopped short and peered at me over his half-moon shaped glasses.

“What is it that you need to accomplish, my poor child?” came his quiet voice. Ibit my lower lip in hesitation, showing one of my long, sharp fangs. I couldn'tpossibly tell him; no one was to know, but myself. No, I would find her on myown, without help. My eyes saddened as I looked at Father Coraway again andquickly shook my head, letting out an almost inaudible, “I can't, I'm so sorry,Father... I must find her....,” I tilted my head to the side as a few tears slide downmy cheeks at the thought.

Father Coraway's eyes widened in realization. Good, he remembered her, unlikemost of the people of this village. As he stared at me, he's eyes changed againto a look of mourning and then of understanding. Seconds later, he stood upstraight, held the bowl of Holy water high and forcefully poured it on my he – nowait, on the ground. I was still shivering when I realized what he did. I openedmy eyes and stared at the proud priest in complete shock. Needless to say, I

wasn't expecting that.

“Run,” was all Father Coraway said as he cautiously watched the door he hadcome through.

3 To Find Who Is Lost

After shaking off my surprise, I quickly scrambled to the door; only to be caughtby the wrist and pulled back. I turned around to meet Father Coraway's deepbrown eyes and forwarder my eyebrows in an attempt to show my confusion.Shaking his head, his eyes flickered towards the door as he demonstrated whatlooked to be someone using a bow and arrow by bending his right arm to havehis hand close to his shoulders, while the other one was straight out, both beingparallel to one another. I winced as I realized what he was implying: hunterswere guarding the entrance. I should have known.

Father Coraway's firm grip never faltered as he silently lead me to the largecrucifix I had spotted earlier. He then placed the tiny crucifix attached to therosary in a ' t ' shaped hole in the wall that I never noticed. I heard a light click

and the wall became a hidden passageway. Gently pushing my into the tunnel,Father Coraway gave a faint smile and said, “Go, head for the woods and never come back. May God guide you, my child.” Smiling, I gave the surprised priest aquick hug before hurrying down the dark tunnel.

It didn't take me long to find the end of the tunnel, which I soon realized leadstraight to the outskirts of the village. Running as fast as I could up a large hilltowards the dark woods, I could hear the outraged cries of the Hunters whenthey realized I was no longer there. I silently prayed Father Coraway would bespared, although it is unlikely. I paused at the top of the hill and looked back atthe village that had destroyed my family and, possibly, my life. I still had onetask to do before I could completely rest, though.

A ghost of a smile made its way on my face as I whispered, “I will stop at nothingto find you... You, who is now lost... My sister, my twin... I know the reason that Isurvived, that I am here, is because I must find you... Jezebel von Haute. ”
