Factors affecting weather and climate

By the end of the lesson you will;

1)Have given the perfect definition of weather and climate 2)Have described the different factors that affect the weather and climate of locations around the world 3)Have explained why these climates exist 4)Have studied and described the climate of Costa Rica and UK

Defining weather / ClimateTask1.What do we mean by weather and climate2.What is the difference? 3.Work in a pair Time; 2 minutes

Weather is the day to day changes in the atmosphere- rain, wind, temperature

Climate is the average weather conditions over a long period of time. It usually measures the temperature and rainfall in a particular area over 30 years

What factors affect weather; Task1.Explain how each of the following will affect weather and temperatures;

Large Distance from the Sea

Continentality

Height above sea level

Proximity (close) to the sea

Extension; 1.Which of the different factors are going to affect the climate and weather of Bournemouth?2. Explain what impact they will have on weather and climate

The land heats up faster than the sea. This means in the summer it will be hotter, but in the winter it will be

cooler

The higher the level of the town, the colder it will be

The notion that oceans heat up and cool down slower than the

land

There will be a more mild climate – the sea will have some of the summer

warmth in winterIn the summer it will have some of the

winter cool

Wind and weather!

TaskYou need to remember as much of the diagram as possible

Winds from the east are hot in the summer and cold in the winter

Winds from the north are very cold as they are coming from the Arctic

Winds from the south west have travelled over the ocean- they will bring lots of rain with them

Winds from the west have come from the Atlantic = lots of rain

Winds form the south come from Africa and over the Sahara. They are hot and bring good weather

Wind and weather

Task1.Complete the following table

Wind Weather Why

North Cold and wet Comes over the ocean and so wet. Comes from the Arctic and so cold

East Hot in summer, cold in the winter

Affected by Continentality – middle of Europe is cold in winter and hot in summer

South Hot Comes from the Sahara and Africa – hot and dry winds

South west and west

Wet Comes over the Atlantic and so very wet! Not cold though!

Extension; What is a prevailing wind and how does it affect our weather?

Climates around the world

TaskYou have 2 climate graphs You need to produce a climate graph Costa Rica Time; 10 minutes

Page 11: Why does it rain so much in the UK? Add in as many answers as possible

Describing and explaining Taskonto each graph add In the following information; 1.What is the top temperature? 2.What is the bottom temperature? 3.What is the temperature range? 4.What is the average precipitation? 5.How would you describe the climate?

Extension; What are the main differences between the climate graphs

Key words

Mild Extreme High Low Seasonal Trends Range

Why? • Why does Moscow have hot summers and cold winters? • Why would the climate of bournemouth be considered mild • Why is there a lot of rain in the UK? • Why does a northerly wind reduce the average temperatures? • Why is an easterly wind cold in the winter and hot in the

summer? • Why do you get sand particles on Southerly winds? • What direction is our prevailing wind?
