4 Functional Principle 4.1 General

The Rain Gauge is a measurement system for rain measurement and data storage. It can be operated in field use as well as with a ground plate to be screwed on concrete.

4.2 Measurement Principle The rain gauge detects liquid (rain) or solid precipitation (hail, snow) falling on the ground. The detection is based on the tipping scale principle. From the 200 cm² collecting area the precipitation flows through an influent sieve and a fine sieve which prevent the drop conduit from being polluted by bird excrements or foliage. The balance tips when the precipitation reaches a level of 0.1 mm = 2 cm³. This tipping procedure is detected by a Reed-switch, and induces an output pulse for 0.1 mm of precipitation in combination with connected electronics. Each instrument is calibrated in the intensity range 0... 11 mm/min with a precipitation quantity of 200 cm³. There is an output signal with an impulse length of 125 ms available for connection to a following PLC as well as the output signal with 50 ms as Reed contact. The impulses from the tipping scale are sent to a Data logger, where they are logged and saved internally depending on date, time and level. The measurement values are saved in one-minute-cycles. The data logger is powered by a 3.75 V / 13.6 Ah rechargeable battery pack. The readings are transmitted to the NIVUS Internet portal Device to Web >D2W< via GPRS. The D2W provides a variety of options for evaluation of readings, status checks and data forwarding as well as alarm functions. To ensure operation during winter time there is a version, type RM 202 with an electronic heating available. This feature requires a 24V power supply which provides 60 W at least. As an option, the heating can be powered by an external 230 V AC power supply Type RMT0 ZNTH 01 as well. The rain gauge head is mate of stainless steel and hence suitable to be operated under various environmental conditions. Optionally there is an upright stand available for either stationary or portable use.

6 Installation 6.1 General

For electric installation the local regulations in the respective countries (e.g. VDE 0100 in Germany) must be referred to. Before feeding the rated voltage the installation must be correctly completed. The installation should be carried out by qualified personnel only. Further statutory standards, regulations and technical rulings must be taken into account.

6.2 Installation and Connection General The accuracy of precipitation metering besides a clean measuring system depends on the correct place of installation. Depending on the wind velocity, a certain amount of the precipitation particles are blown away over the deposit area. Therefore, an installation in a completely open area as well as in the immediate proximity of an object is to be avoided. Gardens e.g., where hedgerows or similar objects offer protection against the wind, are more suitable. Since rain gauging is a spot measurement, the unit must be placed as being representative for an area as large as possible. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recommends that precipitation gauges be installed at a distance which is at least four times as high as the next higher object. f this is not possible, it is to be observed that an elevation angle of 45° towards the surrounding plants, buildings etc. is adhered to. The distance between the top edge of the rain gauge and the ground should be 1 m at least. If snowfall is to be expected regularly within the area of the measuring instrument this distance should be increased respectively.

The rain gauge has to be installed in a way that ensures operation without vibration.

7 Initial start-up 7.1 General

Notes to the user Before you connect and operate the Rain Gauge you should strictly follow the notes below! This instruction manual contains all necessary information to program and to operate the device. It is addressed to qualified technical staffs which has appropriate knowledge about measurement technology and automation technology, To ensure a correct function of the Rain Gauge this instruction manual must be read thoroughly! The Rain Gauge must be wired corresponding to the wiring diagram. If any problems regarding installation, connection or programming should occur please contact our technical division or our service center.

7.2 Preparations for Operation Unpack the device, put the rain gauge on the stand support and fix it with the respective screws (12). Unscrew the three screws on the casing shell (1) and lift off the collector funnel. The collector funnel has two adjustment bolts to ensure the correct funnel position. If the unit is equipped with a heating it is important to carefully lift off and put back the collector funnel in order to avoid damage of the heating contacts. After removing the funnel check if the spirit level on the ground plate indicates horizontal installation. If not, adjust the screws on the ground plate or, in case of an upright stand, the tension screws on the steel ropes. To insert the tipping scale (9) push up the collector (4) after unscrewing the knurled-head screw (8). Please take care that the magnet on the balance looks towards the circuit board to ensure the Reed relay to switch correctly. First check the tipping scale for proper function, then put the collector back to “low” position and subsequently fix it. Put the casing shell back onto the unit and tighten the two casing screws. If the rain gauge is equipped with a heating it must be supplied with 24 V DC. Optionally connect the NTH or NTHD power supply for 230 V AC mains power.

The rain gauge now is ready for use. The parameter setting for the data logger is carried out by using the Internet portal D2W – Device to Web. If using a rain gauge without a data logger connect the accompanying plug with a cable (LiYCY 0.5 mm²) according to the rain gauge head wiring diagram. The rain gauge impulses then can be recorded on an external data logger.

9 Maintenance and Cleaning 9.1 Rain Gauge head

For smooth operation results it is necessary to maintain the unit regularly. The device is designed to have all parts requiring maintenance freely accessible after removing the enclosure shell (funnel).

The maintenance interval should depend on the degree of pollution of the instrument. It is advisable to make a visual inspection at short intervals as particles falling from above, such as foliage, bird dropping etc. can affect the measurement.

The adjustment of the tipping scale may vary due to ambient influences. In this case we recommend to return the unit to the manufacturer to check the calibration.

Cleaning is carried out as follows: see also Fig. 7-1.

- Switch off supply voltage of heating and data logger.

- Remove the inflow sieve (6) from the case (7) (collecting funnel) from above and clean it.

- Unscrew the screws (1) from the collector and remove it for cleaning

- Remove sieve (5) from the collector (4) and clean it.

- The collector (4) with the nozzle (3) can be removed after unscrewing the knurled screw (8). Clean the nozzle borehole by means of small bottle brush.

- Remove the tipping scale (9) carefully from the bearing seat. Clean the inner surfaces with clear water, if heavily soiled (grease) also with gentle soap water. For this, please use a soft brush.

- In case of heavy pollution, please clean also the run-off pan (10)

- After cleaning, please re-insert the parts in reversed order.

Do not use any benzene, alcohol, or other cleansing agents.

Never treat the inner surfaces of the tipping scale with emery paper or something similar.

Do not touch the inner surfaces of the tipping scale with hands.

Please take care that the draining pins are not deformed.
