WESLEY BURTON

UW Sports Ministry

Wes Burton has committed his summer to serving

with Uncharted Waters Sports Ministry from June 1st

to July 28th. UW Sports Ministry is an equipping

ministry that enhances the vision of the Church by

providing sports-related resources for the effective

communication of the gospel. Their vision is to see churches both in the United

States and around the world using sports as an evangelism and discipleship tool.

UW’s summer ministry stretches to over 150 different churches in more than 20

states across the U.S. These VBS-like camps target elementary-age children and

incorporate music, Bible lessons, sports and an opportunity to accept Jesus as

their personal savior. Some of the sports offered are basketball, soccer, football,

Ultimate Frisbee, cheerleading and a specialized sensory program for 4-5 years

olds called Team45!

This is the first summer that Wes has served with UW Sports Ministry, although

he has been involved with other ministries and short term trips around the globe.

He has served with FCA ( Fellowship of Christian Athletes), And Beyond, and even

been to Germany with the Sprachcamp team. Wes was originally anticipating to

work closely with Ben Saucy doing ultimate Frisbee and other sports with the

older kids. God, however had a different plan for Wes. He is working with the

young 4 and 5 year olds. He is also doing all the driving across the country for his

team of volunteers.

Wes says that he is excited to serve with UW because “as a Christian I am called

to spread the gospel to those locally, regionally and beyond. I believe that God

has made a divine appointment for me to be on this mission trip this summer

with Uncharted Waters (UW); from the timing, the team members, the volunteers,

etc.”

Pray for Wesley as he comes home after 2 months of doing missions work across

the country. Pray for his debrief time, that the Lord would give him vision for the

future, and that God would use Wes as a vessel to impact the lives of the young

kids and leaders that he came into contact with these past 2 months!

Sermon Notes - July 29, 2018 - Eric Oldenburg

A Dream About Three Sons

THE PARABLE OF THE TWO DEBTORS (Luke 7:41-43)

-Jesus "the gluttonous man, drunkard, friend of tax collectors and sinners" (v. 36-39)

-God's mercy should result in our total outpouring of love (v. 40-46)

-Is there anyone who only needs to be "forgiven little"? (v. 47-50)

THE PARABLE OF THE UNFORGIVING SERVANT (Matthew 18:23-34)

-Calculating forgiveness: the world's way vs. the Kingdom way (v. 21-22)

-Contrasting forgiveness: divine extravagance vs. human stinginess (v. 23-30)

-Consequences of forgiveness: truly forgive or else you're not forgiven (v. 31-35)

The Conditions of Forgiveness and What Happens When They're Not Met

Condition 0 – If you're guilty of an offense you must repent and seek forgiveness.

If you don't do this then you risk hardening your heart toward God and others.

Condition 1 — You must make the offender aware of the offense.

If you don't do this then you can't expect restoration of the relationship.

If you can't do this then you'll have to release the offense to God.

Condition 2 — The offender must repent of the offense and seek forgiveness.

If there's no repentance there can be no forgiveness or restoration, only release.

Condition 3 — If there is repentance on the part of the offender you must forgive.

If you don't you are rebellious and possibly closed off to God's forgiveness.

Luke 7:41-43; Matthew 18:23-34

The Merciful Moneylender

and the Unmerciful Servant

“FORGIVING BECAUSE FORGIVEN” The depth of our sinfulness: Look up Psalm 14:1-3 (or Psalm 53:1-3) and reflect

on our basic human sinfulness (Paul picks up these themes in Romans 3, as well).

Now look up Psalm 103:11-14 and reflect on how thoroughly God deals with our

sinfulness. Given the reality of our depravity and in light of God's great lovingkind-

ness, consider whether anyone is forgiven more or less than any other person.

How much forgiveness is too much? Jewish rabbis in Jesus' day taught that we

should forgive 3-4 times. In Matthew 18:21, Peter ups that to 7 times. Jesus counters

hyperbolically with 7 times 7 (some translations read 70 times 7, but that is less like-

ly). Why would someone be tempted to keep track of the number of times someone

should be forgiven? What is the harm, if any, in trying to keep track of forgiveness

episodes? If someone actually sinned against you 49 times and you forgave them

each time, what would God want you to do when they sinned against you the 50th

time?

Considering the conditions of forgiveness: Prayerfully read over the "Conditions

of Forgiveness" on the Sermon Notes page. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you

whether you are at any one of the stages reflected in the conditions with another

brother or sister in Christ. If you are, ask God to help you through whichever step is

the right next one for you as you work toward reconciliation and restoration of rela-

tionship with the other person. Forgiveness can be difficult but, because we are for-

given, we can forgive.

Christian attitudes regarding forgiveness: Read the two parables again and

then consider the following 2 proposed approaches to forgiveness: 1. Some say that

regardless of the attitude of the offender, we should forgive them for the sake of our

own emotional and spiritual health. 2. In this 2-minute video, Pastor Nadia Bolz-

Weber says that we should forgive as an act of defiance against

evil and as a pronouncement of victory over evil.

[Warning! Strong Language] Given the biblical teaching on

forgiveness, what problems do you see with these

approaches and how would you respond to them

from Scripture?
