Psalm 145:11-13

#2—The Home

The Home

“They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom, and talk of Your power, to make known to the sons of men His mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of His kingdom. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion endures throughout all generations.” {Psalm 145:11-13}

Who Is in Charge Here?

• Man’s quandary:– Who is in charge?– Who gives orders?– Who has final say?

• When man takes charge: Chaos!

• It’s time we learned that God is in charge:– God is over all things– God ordained the home– God ordained civil government– God ordained the church

Who Is in Charge Here?

God Ordained the Home

• He is a God of order

• God, Christ, angels, man, woman

– “But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.”{1 Corinthians 11:3}

• He is a God of order

• God, Christ, angels, man, woman

– “For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord. For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God.”{1 Corinthians 11:10-12}

God Ordained the Home

• God gave roles at the beginning.• Man’s role is to lead; woman’s role is to

support.– Genesis 2:18-25

God Ordained the Home

“And the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.’ Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.” {Genesis 2:18-20}

The Home

“And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said: ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’ Therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” {Genesis 2:21-25}

The Home

• God gave roles at the beginning.

• He reaffirmed those roles after sin entered the world.

– “To the woman He said: ‘I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; in pain you shall bring forth children; your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you. ” {Genesis 3:16}

God Ordained the Home

• God gave roles at the beginning.• He reaffirmed those roles after sin

entered the world.– “Then to Adam He said, ‘Because you have heeded

the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field.’” {Genesis 3:17,18}

God Ordained the Home

• God gave roles at the beginning.

• He reaffirmed those roles after sin entered the world.

– “In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return.” {Genesis 3:19}

God Ordained the Home

• God gave roles at the beginning.

• Male’s duties: lead and provide

– Physical and temperamental design

• Female duties: support the male’s lead, bear children, and tend to the household

– Physical and temperamental design

God Ordained the Home

each other.

domineering, refuse to aid

God Ordained the Home

God Ordained the Home

• God gave roles at the beginning.

• Sexual fidelity: absolutely essential

• Part of Israel’s constitution

• Reinforced by capital punishment

– “If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then both of them shall die-the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so you shall put away the evil from Israel.” {Deuteronomy 22:22}

God Ordained the Home

• God gave roles at the beginning.

• Sexual fidelity: absolutely essential

• Divorce causes adultery; three souls can be lost! (one exception)– “But I say to you that whoever divorces his

wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.” {Matthew 5:32}

God Ordained the Home

• God gave roles at the beginning.• Sexual fidelity: absolutely essential• Divorce and remarriage leads to bed of

adultery (one exception)– “The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and

saying to Him, ‘s it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?’ And He answered and said to them, ‘Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female.’” {Matthew 19:3,4}

God Ordained the Home

Sexual Fidelity

“And said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let not man separate.’” {Matthew 19:5,6}

“They said to Him, "Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away? He said to them, Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.” {Matthew 19:7,8}

Sexual Fidelity

“And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.” {Matthew 19:9}

Sexual Fidelity

• God gave roles at the beginning.• Sexual fidelity: absolutely essential• Sexual union in marriage is pure;

outside of marriage, it results in fiery judgment.– “Marriage is honorable among all, and the

bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.{Hebrews 13:4}

Christ and the Church Illustrate

“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.” {Ephesians 5:22-24}Wife:

Submits to husband as head,

protector, provider

Church:Submits to Christ

as head, protector, provider

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.” {Ephesians 5:25-27}

Husband:Leads in love as head, protector,

provider

Christ:Leads in love as head, protector,

provider

Christ and the Church Illustrate

“So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” {Ephesians 5:28-31}Husband:United with wife as

one body

Christ:United with church

as one body

Christ and the Church Illustrate

“This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.” {Ephesians 5:32,33}

wife; wife submits
