On The Way
The Mass in Slowest Motion: The Rite of Peace As all Catholics know, the Lord’s Prayer during
Mass does not conclude with the customary “Amen.” Instead, picking up on the last petition of the Lord’s Prayer, the priest begins the Rite of Peace: Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
It is fitting that this plea for peace should occupy such a conspicuous spot in the Mass. First, because our Lord spoke his well-known words about peace when He instituted the Eucharist at the Last Supper: Peace I leave, my peace I give you (Jn 14:27). The priest now asks for that peace to become a reality.
Further, it is the Sacrifice of Christ – present on the altar – that establishes peace. For the lack of peace is caused by sin, by separation from the Father. Our alienation from Him produces a lack of peace within ourselves and therefore with one another. His Sacrifice reconciles us with the Father and thus becomes the source of true peace. Through the Mass Christ continues “making peace through the blood of his cross” (Col 1:27).
A classic definition of peace is the “tranquility of order.” We are at peace when our interior lives are properly ordered, no matter what external confusion might exist. And if we do not have that interior order, then no amount of external organization or control will make a difference. The Sacrifice of Christ, in which we participate at Mass, establishes peace. The Eucharist that we receive at Mass nourishes peace within us.
The Sign (or Kiss) of Peace follows the priest’s prayer for peace. Now, the order here is significant. The priest first addresses Jesus Christ, present on the altar: Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles… Then he extends that peace of Christ to the faithful: The peace of the Lord be with you always. In short, peace comes from the altar, from the crucified and risen Christ now present among us.
The priest or deacon may then invite the people, Let us offer each other the sign of peace. Based on all that has been said, it should be clear that this sign of peace is no ordinary greeting. It is to extend the peace of Christ, not just ours. And the sharing of that peace is to prepare us to receive Him, the Prince of Peace.
Think not that this kiss [of peace] is of the same character with those given in public by common friends. It is not such: but this kiss blends souls one with another, and courts entire forgiveness for them. The kiss therefore is the sign that our souls are mingled together, and banish all remembrance of wrongs…The kiss therefore is reconciliation, and for this reason holy (St. Cyril of Jerusalem). Next week: The Fraction of the Bread

Parish Eight Graders Celebrate Confirmation and Moving Up
The eighth graders of St. James parish celebrated Confirmation and their rising 9th grade status with a small gathering in Heller Hall. In addition to the merriment, the kids raised $100 for the Knights of Peter Claver, the oldest and largest African American Catholic lay organization in the United States.

Important Announcements From Father Scalia In case you haven’t received, or haven’t read, Father Scalia’s latest correspondence to the Parish, here are a few important announcements: Readings and Prayers for Mass Since we still do not have missalettes in the pews, please note the link for “Daily Readings and Mass Prayers’ on our parish homepage at www.stjamescatholic.org. Simply click the link and find everything you need to make the most of your attendance at Mass. Livestreaming of Masses Now that public Mass has been restored, we will reduce the number of Masses that we live stream. Since many people can and do come to Mass, there is not the same need. Indeed, our livestream numbers are down significantly. As such, beginning August 2, we will live stream only the 9:00am, 10:30am, and 2:30pm Masses on Sundays. On weekdays, we will live stream the 8:30am Mass. Adoration and Confession During the pandemic, we have been able to have daily adoration and confession. With the opening up of things, our schedules are filling up, and we are not able to maintain all those commitments. But we do want to maintain some of them! Beginning August, Eucharistic Adoration will be in the church on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 12:30pm to 6:30pm. Likewise, confessions will at 7:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please also see the important reminder on page eight about the change to our Saturday evening Confession times. Groups at Saint James. At the beginning of the shutdown, all activities at Saint James were suspended: school, RCIA, religious education, bible studies, etc. (The notable exception was our drive – thru fish fry and food drives!) Even though things are now beginning to open up; the various parish groups will still not be allowed to meet. The reason is this. We intend to open our Parish School for in person classes five days a week and also to have an abbreviated in person Parish Religious Education Program (PREP). We will have RCIA classes this fall and continue our monthly food drive. These activities (central to the life of the parish and the Church) will require just about every square inch of our campus. To make sure that we can run those programs safely, we cannot have any other activities. Of course, I will continue to monitor the situation and look (and pray!) for a time to invite all the different groups, ministries, and apostolates back home. If you would like to ensure that you receive Father’s frequent updates, send an e-mail to [email protected], and we will be happy to put you on the e-mail list. You can also find Father’s emails at https://www.stjamescatholic.org/current-events/father-scalias-most-recent-constant-contact .

Reminder About Changes to Confession Times Remember, as of Saturday, August 1, we have revised Saturday Confession Times. On Saturdays, evening Confessions will begin at 6:30pm and end at 7:30pm. We are no longer offering Confession from 7:30pm to 8:00pm. Starting Friday, August 7, Friday morning Confessions will start at 11:00am and end at Noon. Additionally, we will only be offering weekday, evening Confessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7:00pm to 8:00pm.
The Solemnity of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary—August 15 This year, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary will fall on Saturday, August 15. Unlike most years, however, this year the Solemnity is not a Holy Day of Obligation. However, it is still an important and solemn day in the Church’s year. St. James will be offering Masses on August 15 at 6:30am, 8:30am, and Noon. Please note that the 5:00pm Vigil Mass on Saturday, August 15 counts toward your Sunday Mass obligation for Sunday, August 16, but will not count toward observance of the Solemnity. The remaining Holy Days of Obligation for 2020 are as follows: the Feast of All Saints will be on Sunday, November 1; the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 8; and the Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) will be celebrated on Friday, December 25. We hope you will be able to join us at these Masses.

Bánica Second Collection—August 30 On the weekend of August 30, the second collection will benefit the Bánica Mission in the Dominican Republic. Since 1991, the Arlington Diocese has regularly sent a priest to serve the two missionary parishes located in the nation’s rural highlands. The two parishes, in the neighboring towns of Bánica and Pedro Santana, both located on the Haitian border, minister to over 13,000 souls, most of whom live in extreme poverty. Your generosity will allow the diocese to continue to provide spiritual and material assistance to those who need it most. For more information about the Bánica Mission, and how you can help support it, visit https://arlingtonmissions.org/banica-mission/. Thank you for your generous support!
