The Governing Body works with and supports the staff of the school to deliver the school's vision, to ensure that the school is continuously improving and meet a number of statutory requirements.

They meet as a whole group 6 times a year. They also have sub-committees which oversee all aspects of our provision.

Play

At Slough Centre Nursery School & Early Years Centre we believe that play is educationally POWERFUL, that children learn & develop through play & that play is a motivating factor for learning.

Slough Centre Nursery is ‘highly experienced in early years education.’ It ‘is a very nurturing and caring school. All members of the school community feel valued. Staff work tirelessly to ensure that children receive the very best standard of teaching. Children enjoy their learning.’

Some of the parents’ comments include; ‘Staff are exceptionally attentive and extremely caring. They have a great understanding of my son’s needs’.

‘We are delighted with the help and support the school has given my child, we have already seen him make huge strides in his learning’.

‘There has never been a day when my child said she didn’t feel like nursery today, this is due to the positive experiences caused by the hard work and commitment of staff.’

Record KeepingWe keep a detailed record of your child’s progress whilst they are at this school so

we can plan activities to help them develop. These records are kept in your child’s ‘All

About Me’ book. You can ask to look at this at any time.

Your child’s key worker will have an initial chat with you about how your child has settled, usually soon after their first 6

weeks of starting. They will offer you the opportunity to talk to them about your child’s progress at regular times during

your child’s time in nursery.

Embedded within our concept of play, is the school’s curriculum, which is balanced & broad, providing for the development of the WHOLE CHILD & meeting the need & rights of INDIVIDUALS.

procedure is in the policy file in the parents’ area.

Our childrenStaff provide appropriate learning & development opportunities & set realistic &

challenging expectations that meet the various needs of children. We are very aware that children start the nursery with different experiences,

interests & abilities. We therefore plan to meet the needs of ALL children. Some children will have additional needs & we will work closely with you to get the

best education for your child.

After

this we will be able to plan specific activities for your child’s individual needs.

Behaviour & Rewards PolicyA policy folder containing up to date policies is available in the parents’ area.

This policy should be read in conjunction with the Equal Opportunities, Health & Safety, Safeguarding, Restraint, Special Educational Needs, Complaints, the Local Offer & Whistle-blowing policies.

Statement of AimsThe staff at Chalvey Nursery School & Slough Centre Nursery School encourage children to have consideration for others, respect for themselves, other children, staff & equipment. We aim to encourage good behaviour & accept children as individuals. When inappropriate behaviour improves we aim to reinforce this with support & praise. It is the act that is wrong, not the child.

We believe that acceptable behaviour will include the following: Moving with care through the nursery. Walking in with parent/carer, settling at home base. Caring for equipment & animals. Learning to follow ‘rules’ & routines & having clearly defined boundaries. Listening to each other & addressing them politely. Participating positively & appropriately at their chosen activity, with regard to

others there. Learning to share & take turns.

We believe that as staff we would be encouraging this behaviour by: Example Letting the child know that they are behaving well. Talking to parents about the positive actions of the child in front of the child. Talking to the group & other staff about the positive actions of the child. Giving a child special jobs to do. Recording improving behaviour. Empowerment – knowing you have the right to say ‘no’ & expressing that

right. Acting out/working through examples through puppets & circle time.

Staff should act as role models of behaviour for children & should encourage visiting adults such as students to be the same. Examples of good relationships & manners in the way we address each other & adults, carers & visitors in front of them should be constantly evident.

We believe that some behaviour is unacceptable at school & this includes: Action or behaviour which can be a danger to themselves or others.

Page 17: Who is Everyonefluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com... · Web viewTo be read in conjunction with the school’s policies for: Behaviour & Rewards, Complaints, Health & Safety,

Anti-social behaviour with peers or staff, e.g. not sharing/co-operating, fighting/trying to dominate peers, not listening when spoken to, rude vocabulary or gestures used to peers or staff.

Inappropriate behaviour, e.g. disrupting activities, deliberately damaging equipment, distracting others that are settled either at group, activity or lunch, incorrect use or treatment of equipment.

Attention seeking & provocative behaviour that could involve any of the above. In these cases this should be dealt with on an individual basis.

We believe we should deal with such behaviour by: Talking quietly to a child (unless they are in imminent danger). Voices may be

raised or firm, showing surprise or disappointment, but shouting should be avoided.

Speaking to an individual on a one-to-one basis & in private, quietly, rather than across a room.

Explaining the potential consequences of dangerous behaviour. Using the child’s perception of good & bad, right & wrong as a starting point – they may not realize or understand potential dangers or the inappropriate nature of behaviour or language.

Encouraging the child to reflect on their action. They should spend a short time thinking about what they have done. Remove the persistent offender from his/her audience.

Encouraging the child to apologise to either peer or staff that they have hurt or upset.

Ignoring attention seeking behaviour but re-directing the child & giving attention for positive reasons.

Considering appropriate ‘action’ with the child e.g. withdrawal of ‘privilege’ or temporary exclusion from an activity.

As members of staff we should ensure that incidents are dealt with by one person & others not join in along the way, unless help is requested as in the TEAMTEACH approach.

Allow children to sort out their own disagreements if possible, supporting them if necessary.

Not embarrassing the child in front of his/her peers. This leads to resentment & lack of willing co-operation & respect.

Avoid labelling children. Children may have problems (which can cause us problems in terms of successfully managing them or situations) but they should not be labelled as problem children.

Avoiding talking about them negatively to others, in front of them. Avoiding nagging & sarcasm. Focusing on the positive to prevent confrontation, which you can rarely win.

Using positive redirection & change of focus to distract the child. When a child has been told that a member of staff is displeased with them,

the relationship with the child should return to normal before the end of the session & not carry forward to the next day.

Page 18: Who is Everyonefluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com... · Web viewTo be read in conjunction with the school’s policies for: Behaviour & Rewards, Complaints, Health & Safety,

Explaining clearly that certain behaviour is totally unacceptable. At the end of the day there are no ‘whys’, ‘ifs’ or ‘buts’ – we just don’t do this in nursery. If there is any doubt, we will speak to parents to reinforce this.

Rewards We aim to ensure that good behaviour at Chalvey Nursery School & Slough

Centre Nursery School is rewarded by praise & encouragement. This includes children whose behaviour is usually good.

We aim to always acknowledge good behaviour. We aim to celebrate helpfulness, kindness & consideration for others. We will

strive to treat children in a positive & consistent manner in an environment where they can learn & achieve.

Children may be rewarded with a sticker if they have worked hard on a particular task with an adult.

Children may be encouraged to tell their parent/carer about their good behaviour or overhear a member of staff reporting back to them.

Children who are experiencing particular difficulties may have a star chart on which their good behaviour is recorded for all to see.

Babies & children under 2The above policy applies to & meets the requirements of babies & children under the age of 2.

Reference to OfSTED Standard 11Adults caring for children in the provision are able to manage a wide range ofchildren’s behaviour in a way which promotes their welfare & development.

Policy for Safeguarding

To be read in conjunction with the school’s policies for: Behaviour & Rewards, Complaints, Health & Safety, Special Educational Needs, Code of Conduct, on Line safety, Whistleblowing, Equal Opportunities & the school’s Local Offer. All staff have had PREVENT training. All staff have read & understood the following documents:What to do if you’re worried a child is being abused March 2015Keeping children safe in education July 2015 & are aware of the updates to this from September 2016

IntroductionThis school recognises its legal duty under s.175 Education Act 2002 to work with other agencies in safeguarding children & protecting them from ‘significant harm’.

Page 19: Who is Everyonefluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com... · Web viewTo be read in conjunction with the school’s policies for: Behaviour & Rewards, Complaints, Health & Safety,

The framework for such procedures is defined by the relevant Circular from the Department for Education. These duties relate to all children & young people under the age of 18.

It is also based on the following legislation: The School Staffing (England) Regulations 2009 which sets out what must be

recorded on the single central record & the requirement for at least one person on a school interview/appointment panel to be trained in safer recruitment techniques.

The Children Act 1989 (& 2004 amendment) which provides a framework for the care & protection of children

Section 5B(11) of the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003 which places a statutory duty on teachers to report to the police where they discover that female genital mutilation (FGM) appears to have been carried out on a girl under 18.

The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, which outlines when people with criminal convictions can work with children.

Statutory Guidance on the Prevent duty, which explains schools’ duties under the Counter-Terrorism & Security Act 2015 with respect to protecting people from the risk of radicalisation & extremism.

The Childcare (Disqualification) Regulations 2009 & Childcare Act 2006, which set out who is disqualified from working with children.

This policy also meets requirements relating to safeguarding & welfare in the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage

The staff seek to adopt an open & accepting attitude towards children & young people as part of their general responsibility for pastoral care. Staff hope that parents & children will feel free to talk about any concerns or worries which may affect educational progress & well-being, & that they will see the school as a safe place if there are any difficulties at home. Children will be taken seriously if they seek help from a member of staff.RationaleIn Chalvey Nursery School & Slough Centre Nursery School we are committed to the protection & safety of the children. We maintain rigorous procedures for child protection & we expect everyone working within the schools to take responsibility for following these procedures & complying with national & local authority Area Child Protection Committee policy & guidelines http://proceduresonline.com/berks.

They are required to report them to the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) & may be required to discuss them with the agencies responsible for investigation & child protection.Staff who observe injuries which appear to be non-accidental, or who are told anything significant by the child, must report their concerns to the school’s DSL (the Executive Headteacher, Diane Lister), or in her absence the Deputy Headteacher, Zoe Keating at Slough Centre Nursery School or Emma Lister at Chalvey Nursery School). School staff do not, however, carry out investigations, nor decide whether children have been abused. That is a matter for the specialist agencies. If a parent thinks their child, whilst in the care of the nursery, may be at risk of harm, they should inform the Headteacher & phone the local authority (LA) immediately:Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO):[email protected] 01753 474053Early Response Hub: 01753 476501, 07748 177986 [email protected] Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) First Contact 01753 87536Children at Risk: 01753 690898, 01753 875591, 01344 786543 (out of hours)Then notify Ofsted on 08546404040

CurriculumChild protection issues will be addressed through the curriculum as appropriate, especially in Personal, Social & Emotional Development. All parents are asked to give permission for their child to be photographed or videoed whilst in school. These images may be used for inservice training purposes, for displays in the school, in the school booklet, on the school video or on the school web site. Parents have the right to withhold this permission.Whenever images of children are used on the website no names are used to identify the child.

Any parent wishing to video their own child within the nursery is asked to check with the Home Base staff if it is appropriate. Staff will be aware of children whose parents do not wish their images to be used. Parents are always reminded to focus on their own child & asked not to post it on social media.

E-Safety PolicyA policy folder containing up to date policies is available in the parents’ area.

E-Safety encompasses Internet technologies and electronic communications such as mobile phones and PDAs. It highlights the need to educate pupils about the benefits and risks of using technology and provides safeguards and awareness for users to enable them to control their online experience. This e-Safety Policy

replaces the previous Internet Policy which has been revised and renamed as the School’s e-Safety Policy to reflect the need to raise awareness of the safety issues associated with electronic communications as a whole;

will operate in conjunction with other school policies including those for ICT, Behaviour, Child Protection, Curriculum Planning, and Health & Safety; and

has been written by the school, based on a template provided by Slough Borough Council which itself is based on government guidance and is considered a model of good practice nationally.

Further information can be found at:http://www.becta.org.uk/schools/esafety

Page 33: Who is Everyonefluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com... · Web viewTo be read in conjunction with the school’s policies for: Behaviour & Rewards, Complaints, Health & Safety,

http://www.ceop.gov.uk/

The school will appoint an e-Safety Co-ordinator who may also be the designated Child Protection Co-ordinator as the roles overlap. In this school the e-safety Co-ordinator is the head teacher. This e-Safety Policy and its implementation will be reviewed annually.

Teaching and Learning

Why is use of the Internet so important? The Internet is an essential element in 21st century life for education, business

and social interaction. The school has a duty to provide children with quality Internet access as part of their learning experience.

Internet use is a part of the curriculum and a necessary tool for staff and children.

Children’s access to the Internet is by adult demonstration with directly supervised access to specific, approved on-line materials.

What are the benefits of using the Internet for the education of our children?

access to world-wide educational resources including museums and art galleries;

educational and cultural exchanges between children world-wide; access to experts in many fields for children and staff; staff professional development through access to national developments,

educational materials and good curriculum practice; communication with support services, professional organisations and

colleagues; improved access to technical support including remote management of

networks and exchange of curriculum and administrative data at both local and national

government levels.

How will Internet use enhance the learning of children? The school Internet access will be designed expressly for pupil use and will

include appropriate filtering. Children will be taught what Internet use is acceptable and what is not and

given clear objectives for Internet use. Children will be educated in the effective use of the Internet in research,

including the skills of knowledge location, retrieval and evaluation.

How will children will be taught to evaluate Internet content?

Page 34: Who is Everyonefluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com... · Web viewTo be read in conjunction with the school’s policies for: Behaviour & Rewards, Complaints, Health & Safety,

The school will ensure that the use of Internet derived materials by staff and children complies with copyright law.

Children should be taught to be critically aware of the materials they read and shown how to validate information before accepting its accuracy.

Managing Internet Access

Information system security School ICT systems capacity and security will be reviewed regularly. Virus protection will be updated regularly. Security strategies will be discussed with the Local Authority.

Published content and the school web site The contact details on the Web site should be the school address, e-mail and

telephone number. Staff or children’s personal information will not be published.

The head teacher will take overall editorial responsibility and ensure that content is accurate and appropriate. In practice monitoring may be delegated to appropriate members of staff.

Publishing children’s images and work Photographs that include children will be selected carefully and will not enable

individual pupils to be clearly identified by name. Children’s full names will not be used anywhere on the Web site, particularly in

association with photographs. Written permission from parents or carers will be obtained before photographs

of pupils are published on the school Web site. An agreement form is included in the school prospectus which is given to the child’s parent/carer.

Children’s work can only be published with the permission of the child and parents/carers.

Social networking and personal publishing The school will block/filter access to social networking sites.

Managing filtering The school will work with the LA, DCSF and the Internet Service Provider to

ensure systems to protect children are reviewed and improved. If staff discover an unsuitable site, it must be reported to the Internet Service

Provider via the ICT Co-ordinator or e-Safety Coordinator. Senior staff will ensure that regular checks are made to ensure that the

filtering methods selected are appropriate, effective and reasonable.

Managing videoconferencing Videoconferencing is not supported in this school.

Page 35: Who is Everyonefluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com... · Web viewTo be read in conjunction with the school’s policies for: Behaviour & Rewards, Complaints, Health & Safety,

Managing emerging technologies Emerging technologies will be examined for educational benefit and a risk

assessment will be carried out before use in school is allowed. Mobile phones will not be used in the classrooms during sessions or in formal

school time. The sending of abusive or inappropriate text messages is forbidden.

Protecting personal data Personal data will be recorded, processed, transferred and made available

according to the Data Protection Act 1998.

Policy decisions

Authorising Internet access All staff must read and sign the ‘Acceptable ICT User Agreement’ before using

any school ICT resource. The school will keep a record of all staff who are granted Internet access. The

record will be kept up-to-date, for instance a member of staff may leave.

Assessing risks In common with other media such as magazines, books, videos and DVDs,

some material available via the Internet is unsuitable for our children. The school will take all reasonable precautions to ensure that users access only appropriate material. However, due to the international scale and linked nature of Internet content, it is not possible to guarantee that unsuitable material will never appear on a school computer. Neither the school nor Slough Borough Council can accept liability for the material accessed, or any consequences of Internet access.

The school will audit ICT provision to establish if the e-safety policy is adequate and that its implementation is effective.

Handling e-safety complaints Complaints of Internet misuse will be dealt with by a senior member of staff. Any complaint about staff misuse must be referred to the head teacher. Complaints of a child protection nature must be dealt with in accordance with

school child protection procedures.

Community use of the Internet The school will liaise with local organisations to establish a common approach

to e-safety.

Communications Policy

Staff and the e-Safety policy All staff will be given the School e-Safety Policy and its importance explained. Staff should be aware that Internet traffic can be monitored and traced to the

individual user. Discretion and professional conduct is essential.

Enlisting parents’ support Parents’ / carers’ attention will be drawn to the School e-Safety Policy in

newsletters, the school brochure and on the school Web site.

Photograph Consent Form

Dear Parent/Carer

At Slough Centre Nursery School we take photographs of the children to celebrate & record achievements. We use these photos in displays, in children’s Record of Achievement Books & on the website.

Records of Achievement are used to celebrate your child’s progress. These are sent home at the end of your child’s time at nursery. Photographs of individuals, groups or classes of children may appear in these records.

We need your consent to take photographs of your child, & use them in the ways described below. If you are not happy for us to do this, that’s no problem – we will accommodate your preferences. We must notify you of the schools general Privacy statement which is attached. We ask you as a parent or carer to decide on behalf of your child what can be done with their images. Please complete & sign the attached form

Yours sincerely
