August has been a mixed bag of a month weather-wise, and September promises a mixed and very FULL bag

of entertainment. Even if you don’t have the traditional back-to-school rush to get shoes, bags, books and uniform, there’s still plenty for you to plan and do. We’re brought you as much of the Hop Festival events as we could - see the gig guide p38, and there are LOADS of things happening here in Whitstable, literally on your doorstep. We always list as many events as we can in our pages but this one

came through when we were already full: The Monument Pub is holding a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan on Friday September 24th - why not pop up for a cake, a cuppa and a chat if you can spare the time? As well as writing, editing and mothering, Christina enjoys singing and cake-making, has recently rediscovered running, and loves going to local gigs and exhibitions. Chris Haydon – Chris is 19 years old and has lived in Whitstable his whole life. Currently studying Film at the University of Brighton, Chris is an avid film fan and buff, and plans to go to the National Film School after University to study Directing Fiction Film and Documentary. He loves writing film reviews, and will be writing reviews for the IMP between course work and writing for the university’s paper, ‘The Pebble’.

Georgie Mind – Georgie is 18 and has lived in Whitstable most of her life. Currently studying A levels at Canterbury College in English, Art History, Philosophy and Psychology, she hopes to start a degree course in Art History next year. Georgie is very passionate about promoting arts in the community and thinks that the diversity of the wonderful Whitstable art scene should be celebrated!

Malissa Taylor – South African-born Malissa is passionate about three things; Mamahood, Music and Mother Earth. She spends most of her time consumed by these and feels that her responsibility is to ensure that each is celebrated by everything that she does. Malissa loves to be part of, and write about, the Whitstable community and local music.

Nelson P. Jefferson – Nelson P. Jefferson is the 90-year old drummer of The Near Legendary Blue Chickens and hails originally from Memphis Tennessee, although has been a resident of Faversham for some years now. He can sometimes be seen sitting in his rocking chair on the front porch or else fruitlessly panning for gold on the banks of the creek.

Cassie Stafford – Cassie lives in Whitstable with her husband Matt and two beautiful children. They have been here for nearly 2 years now and love it. Cassie has a great passion for writing, music, reading and going on adventures with her kids.

Having lived in Whitstable for nine years, until the birth of her son in 2006, Jane worked in the music industry in London

as an independent PR working with such names as Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), Ray Davies, Fish, EMI Music Publishing and Monsters of Rock Festival. She moved to Canterbury to take over as Director of Provocateur Records, a cutting-edge independent jazz label with artists such as Andy Sheppard, Norma Winstone and Mike Gibbs, as well as briefly working as marketing director for bands such as Caravan, Barclay James Harvest and Gong.

Commenting on the launch of WhitLive, Jane explained: “Whitstable has a vibrant live music scene but few national and international acts are seen here. WhitLive intends to change that. Our autumn series begins with three truly awesome tribute acts and will be held at The East Quay, The Harbour. For those who don’t know it, it is a fantastic venue - low ceilinged with a rather hip cellar club vibe in a refurbished warehouse on the beach - a great place to see a live band and a bit of a hidden gem. Future events will include both established names and up and coming artists from all genres of music.”

Tribute acts have become an increasingly popular style of live music in recent years. People are sometimes wary of tributes and poor quality ‘karaoke’ acts can give the genre a bad name, and Jane realises this: “We are not talking dodgy Abba nights here!” she explained. “WhitLive has booked three of the best acts who are genuine tributes to amazing rock acts.” These musicians are not only incredibly talented but also passionate about the bands that they pay tribute to.

So what can Whitstable look forward to? Taking up the East Quay stage this month are the Kings of Lyon on September 24. Their gig at The East Quay comes as a pre-tour warm-up

The people of Whitstable’s ‘thirst for music’ was the driving force behind new music company Whit Live, according to founder Jane Lindsey. A music business executive with 20 years experience in the industry, Jane saw a gap in the market for national and international bands and wanted to bring quality live music here, in an organic way, avoiding the often cut -throat nature of the music industry.

A thirst for music...

before the band embark on a 26 date UK tour that will see them entertain the masses at venues including the O2 Academies in Bristol, London and Liverpool. Their set includes hits from Kings of Leon’s last four albums, and promises you a show packed full of energy and quality, which has already gained them an international reputation.

Second on the bill, on November 5 are LetzZep.”If you closed your eyes you really could imagine that it was Plant and Page up there. And if you opened them again the illusion didn’t really go away”. Jeremy Clarkson, The Sunday Times. Ticketmaster rates these guys as the Most Popular and Top Rated Led Zeppelin tribute act in the UK today. LetzZep have been featured on BBC1, BBC2, ITV, in Classic Rock and Kerrang, and have even been invited by Led Zeppelin themselves to perform at the official launch party for Led Zeppelin’s ‘Mothership’ album. Talking to ‘Q’ music magazine, Robert Plant said; “I walked in and saw me.”

Coldplace, play the East Quay December 3. Fresh from a European tour, this band’s live show is second to none. Their aim, as a stunningly accurate tribute to one of the world’s biggest bands, is to capture the feeling of a live Coldplay performance - the music, the visuals, the energy and the atmosphere.

As for future plans - in 2011 WhitLive will bring to you a Spring series of singer/songwriters and a Summer series of Reggae may be in the pipeline. Watch this space…

Twizzle came in rather flustered. “Come sit down and have some custard.”“No time for custard!” Twizzle said“We have a mystery to solve my friend.”Lenny sat quietly taking everything in.“Humm” he said, “I see.” He grinned.His feet glowing sparkly red,“Let’s go Twizzle. Quick!” he said.They walked through the forest of autumn trees,And listened to the gentle breeze and swirling leaves rustling on the ground.

When they heard a familiar sound. A song, a sweet tweet as they moved along.Lenny’s feet flashed and shone a burning red.“ I believe we have found Miss Blue Bird’s song,” he said.The circle of leaves rose higher and higher,Musical notes emerged from a dusty mud fire.Lenny pulled out a magical bag and scooped up the noteswith all the strength that he had.

With the song safely trapped insideThe friends now ran to find,Little Miss Blue Bird at the blue birds ball.But they looked and looked and couldn’t find her at all.“Miss Blue Bird! Come, we have your song, Miss Bird, where have you gone?” Then just by chance they saw her perched high on a branch.She saw them coming and flew down quick.Lenny opened the bag as she flew over head and the notes swirled around her pretty blue head. Then disappeared and she opened her beak and what should come out a chirp and a tweet.

Twizzle Brown and Lenny Sparkle

Twizzle Brown and Lenny Sparkle did everything together. They walked together, talked together, sang together, and played together. They were the best of friends.

One beautiful summer morning Twizzle lay in his bed awoken by the early sun.Stretched his arms and burst into song. A little blue bird was passing by. She heard Twizzle’s song and she started to cry.When Twizzle saw her tears overflowing he wanted to know where she was going, he wanted to help as she looked so sad. Little bird what could be so bad?

She explained to Twizzle that her song had gone, That she had woken up this morning with no chirp, or tweet not a song or a lyric had jumped to her beak.Twizzle’s best friend Lenny was clever, quite bright. He’d know what to do. You know he just might.The little blue bird managed a smile Ruffled her feathers and sat for a while before she said, “okay Twizzle Brown I’ll stay right here. I’ll wait for dear Lenny but I do fear, my song may not come back at all and tonight is the blue birds summer ball.”

“Don’t worry Miss Blue Bird,” Twizzle said, As he brushed his twizzle tuft on top of his head.“My best friend Lenny has magical feetWith a little walk we’ll find your tweet.”Lenny sat at his table sipping his teaWhen out of his window who should he see?His best friend Twizzle walking this way.Lenny waved, and smiled. “What a beautiful day!”

My mother always drummed the idea into my head that one should not become stuck in an era and that to move in time with music was a sure way to remain eternally youthful. She is one of the original hippies, blessed with a vision of a pure and flowery world. She is as ignited by the Rolling Stones as she is delighted by the dark sounds of The Sisters of Mercy or even the animating beats of Fat Boy Slim.

In light of this, I fast forward to the day our lovely editor, Christina, arrived at my gate with a copy of a ‘live studio’ album created by local band, The

Thunderbuggs. It was shortly after four and I was swimming deep inside the bed-time routine that most parents are busy with at this time.

I ran the children’s bath and as the calming aroma of lavender circulated our home, I decided to put the CD on. Children safely in the bath, I began - or rather we began - an invigorating power hour which was to be one of the most memorable Monday nights I’d had in a while...

The first track is a cover of a Kasabian track, called ‘Fire’. It is a powerful rendition of an incredible song and I am almost sure that the ‘buggs’ version is exactly what the original should have been. Tony, the Italian-born front man, brings a raw, sound to the song which I believe actually makes the song ten times better than the polished, corporate original.

While these delicious sounds filled our home, my children danced wildly in the bath leaving the bathroom in a liquid blanket of soap suds and delighted laughter. It made me think of those times I had been to a gig and I was so enthralled by the music that I wished it would never end...

Next track is Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Cigarette Smoke’, chosen by Tony. One of his heroes and influences is

Alex Turner and Tony explains: “Although not very well known, this song has always had a big welcome from our fans, to the point that people were asking us to play it regularly. To date this song still remains in one of our sets.”

Sex On Fire by Kings Of Leon is next. A huge hit for the Kings Of Leon and a huge hit for the Thunderbuggs when played. This song was again chosen due to its huge popularity with both the audience and the band. Tony explains: “We usually leave this song till about mid-set, when everyone’s a little tipsy and up for blasting out the chorus with us. A gift from the Kings Of Leon!”

Time Is Running Out by Muse follows. This song was chosen simply to honour a guitar legend and musical genius, Matthew Bellamy. Tony says: “We’ve watched this guy run around on stage with his guitar on his head playing lead guitar. In my opinion there’s not enough recognition for Matthew. This was always a popular Muse track. The band love playing it, I love singing it and the audience enjoys listening to me trying to squeeze out those amazingly high notes!”

I Predict A Riot by the Kaiser Chiefs is up next. “Always a great song to start off a gig,” Tony explains, “It’s a big song and a very important one to get right. We hadn’t really heard any other bands

cover this so thought it ideal to cover due to its popularity and presence.”

Somebody Told Me by the Killers, the next track, is musically very involved and technical. “This song was a challenge for all of us in the band. We wanted to nail this one and really give it our own sound. The challenge appealed to all of us and every time we play it there seems to be a sense of achievement with this one.”

Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes is an old classic. “Everyone seems to like this song. We chose it simply due to its likeability. It’s one of those songs that everyone forgets about until they hear it and then: BOOM! It takes you right back to the time it was originally performed by the White Stripes.”

When The Sun Goes Down - Arctic Monkeys is next. “As any Arctic Monkeys fan will know, the drummer is not human, he’s a robot. Any drummer that can mimic this song is worth his weight in gold, so hats off to our own drummer, John. This song is so much fun to play and always gets a warm reception.”

Hold On, an original by the Thunderbuggs is next. “This song was written by David, our Lead Guitarist in 2009. David is an excellent guitarist and great lyricist, and wrote this in a day. It was rehearsed the same weekend and remains, we feel, a great original track. We’ll let you form your own opinion,” Tony says, smiling.

Lou Lou, another Thunderbuggs original, is up next - a brand new cover for the band, written by Tony on a Saturday afternoon. “This song, I feel, is the bees knees,” Tony laughs. “But credit to all the guys, as I wrote it using their interpretations and ideas of where they wanted the song to go. They made it.”

Sheenah, another original, was written by David in 2009. “There are some great lyrics in this song,

we’d hope you agree,” Tony laughs. “I can’t speak for everyone in the band but this song always gives me an Oasis kind of vibe. It’s a fun song to sing and a challenging one, vocally. We hope you enjoy it.”

One Night Stand, again by the Thunderbuggs was written by Tony this year for 2010. “We’ve yet to release this song as it’s only just been completed - but watch this space, Myspace fans!”

It’s Not Over Yet by the Klaxons is up next. “A Great fun song to sing and play,” Tony muses. “Credit to David on this one for replacing keyboard with lead guitar. We chose it simply because it was a great cover of an old dance track. Every Indie fan knows it and always gets applause.”

Ever Fallen In Love by the Buzzcocks follows. “Yes, I know what you’re thinking, where does that fit in our set?!” Tony laughs. “Quite simply, we’ve made it our own and it seems to be a hugely popular choice that now has its place with us. This song is sung by David while I take a back seat and a breather. It’s nice sometimes to just step back and enjoy playing the guitar while someone else does the vocal.”

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand is a favourite of Roddy’s. “We love playing this song and feel that it’s another sing a long that everyone knows,” Tony explains.

Sterephonics’ Dakota is next, and the newest cover to the collection. “We all absolutely love this song,” Tony enthuses. “It was rehearsed and put in the bag in one weekend.”

I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor. “Let’s finish on this one. Yes ok, another Arctic track but, hey, Who doesn’t like this song?” laughs Tony. “You can’t fail to win the crowd with this song at the end of the night. Great to play and great to sing.

Thunderbuggs have a huge catalogue of songs including other great hits from Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers- Pixies, Hard Fi, Razorlight, Paolo Nutini, Radio Head, Futureheads, The Pretty Reckless, Jet, The Strokes and many more. Their set list is always being updated, and they’re even trying out female vocals on their two newest covers, currently in rehearsal, so watch this space...

I still remember his voice; light and conversational, although his expression was earnest.

“Oh, I don’t find it at all amusing,” he said, “but I would like to better understand your point of view.”

“Well, if you really need me to explain, there’s the little matter of hoarding all this and not reporting it to a museum – plus, I’ve caught you red-handed in the act of writing on paper!”

“And where is the crime in writing on paper?”I guess it was at this point I suspected a

trap. Why ask such a dumb question if he wasn’t stalling for something? But stalling for what? I imagined all sorts of things; back-up in the form of a large and heavily-armed gang, a booby-trap, even a bomb big enough to blow the whole container (“You’ll never take me alive!” – BOOM!!!). Somehow though, it just didn’t fit – I have an instinct for these things. He was genuinely puzzled at his crime.

“You want me to list ‘em? Well, there’s all those trees to begin with – trees that could’ve helped stabilise our atmosphere, our climate – except they were all chopped down so you could sit here scribbling away.”

The collector shook his head; the pupil had got the wrong answer. I swear I could’ve shot him there and then.

“Firstly, I have never ‘trafficked’, as you say, officer – I merely collect, save from destruction. Secondly, if you were to look, you would find that none of the paper here is less than fifty years old. Most of it in fact has been recycled once already, before being reprinted and rebound.”

I was about to say that that was irrelevant, but he put his hand up and I fell silent, why I don’t know, but somehow he’d gotten himself in charge.

“Thirdly, most of the trees you imagine yourself defending most honourably were felled for land clearance – you like burgers, officer?”

“What’s that got to do with anything?”

“Oh, everything. You see, ranches account for three-quarters of rainforest destruction, not paper pulping.”

I really didn’t have an answer for that one.“But why can’t you use a holo-pad like

everyone else?”The collector laughed then. It rang hollow in

the confined space.“The copper, silicon, gold, tungsten and

plastic in that little device you wear like a tie was mined largely in Africa and South-East Asia – you think mining is having less environmental impact than deforestation?”

I could see that this guy was slowly getting the upper hand. I wasn’t about to let that happen, not with the arrest of my career still to make.

“Mining isn’t illegal,” I said. “What you’re doing is.”

It was as if he hadn’t heard me.“How did you get here tonight, officer?” he

asked, suddenly.I answered before I could stop myself.“Car”“No – I mean; how did you know where I was?”“That’s confidential,” I growled.“Oh, I know all about Mikey,” the collector

said airily. “Did he tell you how to find the right container, the yellow one with blue stripes?”

I nodded.“And you made use of the markings on

the other containers in order to get here, too?” he persisted.

“What are you getting at?” I asked, intrigued despite myself.

“Mark-making, officer – it’s how you found me. It’s how you operated your car to get here – following all those instructions and reading all those signposts; it’s how you’re going to file your report tonight, I suppose.”

“Yeah, and I won’t be using paper!”“No, but you will be using silicon. The act of

writing is as central to being human as breathing, whatever material you choose to record your thoughts upon.”

“And you chose paper, which is a restricted substance,” I countered.

“Magnetism,” he said simply then.“Huh?”“All your work files, all your university essays,

your school work when you were a child – all that writing, held on micro-disc or direct-chip – it makes no difference – all held in place by magnetism.”

“So?”“So, officer – up above our heads at this very

moment is a tactical counter-measures battle platform – a high-orbit satellite made, oh, more than seventy years ago now.

“There are at least four others that I have been able to verify, in geo-stationary orbits above the major cities; Beijing, Mumbai, Seoul and Johannesburg. They are floating nuclear fission reactors, able to discharge an enormous electro-magnetic pulse to specific targets on the world below. They were designed as a deterrent; do what we say, or turn a blind eye, or else we burn your computers out and bring your dreams of industrialisation to an end.

“As you know, it never happened. The New Ice Age began and the biggest migrations in recorded history resulted. The battle platforms were forgotten, but they’re still there, fully operational – and their orbits are decaying.”

I barely understood half of what he was saying. I’d heard of the old satellites and space stations, of course. Every now and then one would burn up spectacularly. There was the big one - the ISS – or something like that - that fell on Rome. But weapons in space? None of it made sense and I was feeling increasingly nervous. I reached for my gun and pointed it at him.

“What are you talking about? Make sense and make it quick.”

“Gravity is pulling these satellites lower and lower all the time. It’s only a matter of time before one burns up, in which case it will discharge a massive EMP. And you know what that means, don’t you?”

I did. An electro-magnetic pulse would de-magnetise every chip, disc and tape ever recorded on. Almost two hundred years of

recorded work would be wiped out. Banks would lose records of every account, and the damage to government bodies would be incalculable, since paper hard-copies had been outlawed for decades.

“You haven’t any proof of this,” I grunted.The collector pointed at his desk.“Here,” he said, “records recovered from the

Pentagon before it froze over: every super-cruiser, every nuclear submarine, every tactical counter-measure battle platform ever operated by the old United States. See, it’s helpful to have something on paper.”

I looked – and my blood ran cold.“So, what do you say? Still going to arrest me?”I thought long and hard then, my gun still

pointing at him, my eyes darting between the yellowing, slowly disintegrating reports and the eyes of the collector.

“Tell you what,” I said eventually, “say if I leave tonight and let you go – what happens to all this paper?”

“This is my life’s work, my collection. I can’t move this just like that,” the collector responded.

“I arrest you then, and impound the evidence – one of the museums can have it.”

The collector looked startled for the first time.“If they do that, they will simply hide, or

destroy, the evidence. Nothing will change.”“I thought you’d say that. What I have in mind

is this; I leave now but come back in a year’s time, when I impound everything I find.”

“What about me?”“You won’t be here – long gone. Let’s say you

were tipped off.”“I can’t possibly take all this paper with me!

What am I supposed to do?”I smiled. I was back in control.“Memorise it - as much as you can, anyway –

the important stuff.” I pointed at the buff folders on the table. “All this stuff, at least,”

And so we made a deal. The collector disappeared and, a year later, I made the breakthrough discovery that appeared to smash one of the biggest paper-smuggling rings to appear in China. My junior officers swarmed about the container, poring over the books and folders and magazines. They only missed one item: a small spiral-bound book that had been residing in my jacket pocket for the last twelve months.

It finally arrived; the film that audiences around the world had been waiting 11 years for. The third and final instalment of Pixar’s magnificent Toy Story franchise which, if you’re a Pixar super-fan like me, was the best possible news one could hear.

It was a certainty that people would flock into the screens to be re-united with Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the gang one last time, but have Pixar nailed this film like the previous pictures? Could the Toy Story franchise be the best and most consistent trilogy of films ever made?

Andy (voiced by John Morris) has grown up and he’s heading for college. Unsure what to take and leave behind before his travels, he has the difficult task of letting go of his childhood. Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is certain that Andy will hang on to the gang of toys as they mean so much to him, but the rest of the group aren’t convinced. The three places they could end up in are the trash, the attic or Sunnyside Day-Care Centre. When the toys are mistakenly delivered to Sunnyside rather than put in the attic, Woody tries to convince the gang that Andy didn’t abandon them. Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tim Allen) and Jessie (voiced by Joan Cusack) believe that Sunnyside could be the beginning of a new life for them; a place where they are played with every day and never have to suffer the feeling of rejection again. The gang are introduced to the resident toys of the centre including Lotso (voiced by Ned Beatty) and Ken (voiced by Micheal Keaton), who show them the wonders of day-care. However, soon things become suspicious and the toys know that they need to get back to Andy before they lose him forever.

Like most of Pixar’s previous pictures, this film tackles adult and rather dark subject matter in a beautiful, audience-friendly manner. The main theme running through the movie is abandonment; being disowned by the person you loved so dearly. It’s a really brave move from new Pixar director Lee Unkrich to expect children to understand and sit through a film like this. But don’t worry, the magicians at Pixar absolutely nail it. Toy Story 3 is an utter masterpiece.

The animation is gorgeous; the talents at the studio are always growing and they prove once again that no other animation studio is any competition for the almighty Pixar. The plot is wonderful; every aspect is so human and so believable that you forget you are watching a computerised image of a Cowboy doll and a Space Ranger; you are watching humans with real emotions. This film will make you laugh until your sides spilt and then make you cry more than you could ever imagine. Pixar’s storytelling and character development is second to none. How is it possible to make adult men cry over toys? Because they are that good at making movies. They don’t just stick in the odd ‘adult’ joke or message like Dreamworks do with the ‘Shrek’ pictures, they build an infrastructure of audience’s ideas and interpretations of film-going. The children and adults will both laugh and cry together, and for a filmmaker, that’s incredibly hard to achieve.

The new characters are wonderful too. Lotso is appallingly twisted and dark making his presence on screen rather sinister. Ken is absolutely hilarious and is the star of the show, Big Baby is terrifying, Mr. Pricklepants (voiced by Timothy Dalton) is brilliant and Chuckles (voiced by Bud Luckey) is a real tear-jerking character addition.

Toy Story 3 is a beautiful, honest and marvellous picture that truly wraps up one of the best trilogies in film history. It’s an utter knockout and a master-class in animated cinema.

Verdict: 5 out of 5 – July has brought us the two best films of the year. I highly doubt anything will knock this and ‘Inception’ off 2010’s top-spot.

THE LETTER BOX217th Whitstable Regatta – Thank you

The President of Whitstable & Herne Bay Lions Club Maureen Warn and I would like to say a

BIG thank you to all those came, or helped in anyway, to make the 217th Whitstable Regatta

on Saturday 31st July & Sunday 1st of August a fantastic weekend. Where to start? Firstly, with

the organising committee and the various helpers, thank you for a fantastic effort and support

throughout; without you it would not have happened. This has to include my long suffering wife Jill

who has put up with the dining table as an office and me working all hours, endless phone calls

and messages. Thank you. We must not forget our Lord Mayor Councillor Pat Todd and his wife

the Mayoress Barbara along with Whitstable Carnival Queen Lizzie Cox and her court for opening

the event. The opening also marked another historic first to attempt to register the 217th Whitstable

Regatta with the Guinness Book of Records as the “Oldest Sailing Regatta in the World”. The

current record is 1826, our first was 1792.

Another BIG thank you must go to Shepherd Neame for the sponsorship of the “Spitfire” which

unfortunately turned into a Hawker Hurricane. Late on the Saturday evening, I received a phone

call stating that due to unforeseen problems the Spitfire could not fly! The Hurricane was the

replacement. What a great display in a 68 year old plane (the pilots not that old), barrel turns, loop

the loop, vertical climbs and not forgetting the wave when he left. Then there was the return of

the “Greasy Pole” a great success, it was nice to see people queuing to take part. One contestant

who took part wanted to when younger, but mum said ‘no, it’s too dangerous’ has now achieved

a life time ambition by taking part. The contest was infact, won by not by a young man or a young

woman, but by a ten year old girl Victoria Clayson. Victoria, we salute you. Thank you to Stuart and

the Emeline for taking part. See you next year. Then there was the fairground in all its glory, the

Almost Cruft’s Dog Show, Uncle Myles and Billy the Rabbit, the EKHO re enactment group with the

Saxons and Viking. They even staged an invasion of Tankerton Beach, which was most realistic.

Whitstable Yacht Club, thank you. When we met in September last year you asked, what did I want;

reply “a bay full of boats”. You did just that. Thank you. The winner of the Regatta was John Cooper

and Hilary Bradshaw in a Merlin Rocket and The Lions Club Regatta Award went to two13 year old

juniors Ruth Oliver and Sam Figgis. Well done to you all.

We must not forget all the stallholders both charity, domestic and commercial, the police, fire

and rescue service and the St John’s Ambulance, Canterbury City Council, SERCO, Majestic

Publications for the programmes, the local press for the publicity before and after the event.

The Sea Scouts for all their help at sea with boats and things. The Sea Cadets for the opening

ceremony. Viking Fireworks for the magnificent firework display on Saturday night. Finally I must

thank all the Lion club members from as far away as Chichester, Brighton, Gillingham, Deal,

Canterbury and Thanet who helped ran charity stalls and joined in the firework collection, the Lions

of Whitstable & Herne Bay, friends and family who helped in every way to make this Regatta one of

the best for many years.

When you make a major Hollywood film company over $1 billion on Box-Office and DVD sales, chances are you’re going to be in their good books. That’s exactly what British director Christopher Nolan did in 2008 with

‘The Dark Knight’ and consequently, Warner Bros. love him, so they allowed him to go and make any film of his choice. So, $160 million later we have ‘Inception’; a film that breaks various genres and filmic styles, and it’s the picture that Nolan has always wanted to make.

Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is an ‘Extractor’; a job that involves stealing secret information from people’s subconscious whilst they dream. He is able to find out various things; from the contents of a safe to personal information about a certain person all through invading their dreams. Cobb is suffering with trauma from his past when he is offered a job from Saito (Ken Watanabe) which will solve everything. He must perform ‘Inception’- create a dream and plant it into somebody’s brain. The ‘subject’ is Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy); a young businessman whose about to gain control of his father’s empire. Saito wants Fischer to break up the empire so his company won’t take over the business world. Cobb knows he’ll need help from a crack-team of great minds. His partner Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), master-forger Eames (Tom Hardy) and Architecture student Ariadne (Ellen Page) all join forces to hatch the perfect plan.

And it actually gets far more complicated than this, but this is a good thing, a very good thing. Inception’ is such a brave and beautiful film that proves that audiences like a challenge whilst watching a movie. It’s a wonderfully complex blend of unique ideas, existentialism and imagination that pours gorgeously onto the big-screen. The textual layering of the movie is second to none; Nolan wrote and produced the picture, and his direction is flawless, the cinematography is mouth-watering and the architecture in the dream sequences is extraordinary, and to make it even better, most of the picture is filmed on location and in sets so there’s very little CGI in what could have easily been a Green-Screen movie. All the sequences with rotating corridors and buildings were purposely built for the movie, a smart and brilliant move from Nolan and his team. The action sequences are white-knuckle; the explosions, car chases and fight sequences prove that even though this is technically a Sci-Fi/Psychological Thriller, it still kicks the dust up in the faces of the big Action pictures.

The performances are wonderful too; DiCaprio is incredible as Cobb, he just floats through the scenes effortlessly. Page is fabulous as always, Ariadne is a brilliant character and Page’s charisma and persona completely fit the part. Marion Cotillard is sensational as Mal, Cobb’s wife ,who causes him some serious trouble throughout. Hardy and Gordon-Levitt are also fantastic; they bounce off of each other nicely which creates a good bond between the characters and the audience’s relationship with them.

Hans Zimmer provides the score for the movie - and what powerful music it is - it’s great to hear his music - thundering sounds and sometimes deafening percussion - support such an epic film. It makes me happy to know that Christopher Nolan is English. He’s one of the best directors currently, and he sits up there with some of the British greats.

So far this is my film of the year. ‘Inception’ is stunning, visually and dramatically. It really is a powerhouse of a picture. If you see any Blockbuster this year, please make it this one. Show Hollywood that we like smart films which keep you thinking and guessing what will happen next, that we like to sit with our jaws to the floor at the sheer beauty and excellence of a picture; let’s show Hollywood that we like cinema, not just any old rubbish that’s going to make a fast buck.

Verdict: 5 out of 5 – I highly doubt anything this year will top this incredible picture. An utter masterpiece that deserves every ounce of praise it gets.

September 1930 - A Sticky Invention

September’s Solutions

A PEEK INTO THE PAST...

On September 8th 1930 Richard G. Drew invented Scotch Tape.

Drew worked for 3M in St. Paul, Minnesota. Originally, 3M only made sandpaper, but during testing at a local car workshop, Drew

observed that car painters had difficulty making clean dividing lines on two-colour paint jobs.

After two years of effort in the company labs, he invented masking tape (1925), a tan paper tape with a light, pressure sensitive adhesive backing. Five years later, he’d developed his invention further and Scotch Brand Cellulose Tape was born.

This was the first waterproof, see-through, pressure-sensitive tape. People loved the fact that it could help

them make-do-and mend during the Great Depression and enthusiastically embraced the product. The introduction of the

distinctive handheld dispenser, ‘the snail’, in 1939 propelled it to iconic status. Even the popular US show Saturday Night Live got in

on the act, parodying it in their 1978 sketch “Scotch® Boutique,” about the owners of a trendy new store selling nothing but Scotch® Tape.

Today there are more than 400 different varieties of tape sold under the Scotch and 3M brand.

A Series of Unfortunate Events – Book The First – The Bad Beginning – Lemony SnicketAs Lemony Snicket says in the very first line ‘If you are interested in stories with happy endings, you would be better off reading some other book. In this book, not only is there no happy ending, there is no happy beginning and very few happy things in the middle’.

The same could be said for the rest of the ‘Series of Unfortunate Events’, of which this novel is the first. It follows the lives of the three Baudelaire children, Violet, Klaus and Sunny, who are not only orphaned but made homeless within the space of the first ten pages. However, things soon go from bad to worse as they find themselves in the care of a sinister ‘distant relative’, the mysterious Count Olaf.

It soon becomes clear that Count Olaf has plans to seize the fortune left to them by their parents – but like much of the story, these plans are far from predictable.

Snicket’s style is quirky and clever. His playful use of language draws the reader on and he is by turns simple and bafflingly complex. The book itself is a delight too – particularly the hardback edition with intricate endpapers and line drawings to help young readers visualise the many odd happenings as they occur. And, best of all, once you have finished this one there are another 12 to read before the end of the series is reached – literally, in fact, as Book The Thirteenth is ‘The End’.

Instruments of Darkness – Imogen RobertsonIn 2007, Imogen Robertson won the Telegraph’s ‘First Thousand Words of a Novel’ competition with the opening chapters of this book, and it is easy to see why. Set in 1780, it follows the mysterious events surrounding a sudden death at Thornleigh Hall in Sussex. The family who live there – an invalid father, his courtesan wife and his dissolute second son Hugh – are all entangled in the story that follows.

It soon becomes clear that the death is related in some way to the murder of a musician and shop owner in London, but his connection to Thornleigh is unclear. Harriet Westerman, living nearby with her sister, takes up the investigation with the reluctant help of Gabriel Crowther, whose reputation as an anatomist makes him feared by the close knit community. As more deaths occur, the partnership between Harriet and Crowther develops further, and the secrets of the Hall and the village are revealed – including, potentially, the location of Thornleigh’s missing heir.

Robertson is a fabulous storyteller, successfully interweaving events in riot-torn London and in Sussex, along with Hugh Thornleigh’s experiences in the American War of Independence. The twists in the plot keep you guessing until the very end. In Harriet Westerman, she creates an original and memorable heroine, but Crowther is even more intriguing. It is no surprise – more of a delight – that the two reappear in her next novel, Anatomy of Murder, released in April 2010.

CAKE100g softened butter100g golden caster sugar100g self-raising flour1 tsp baking powder1 tsp vanilla extract2 eggs

1Pre-heat oven to 180C /160C fan / gas 4.

2 For the topping: beat the butter and sugar

together until light and fluffy. Spread over the base and a quarter of the way up the sides of a 20-21cm round cake tin. Arrange pineapple rings on top, then place cherries in the centres of the rings.

3 Place the cake ingredients into a bowl

along with 2 tbsp of the reserved pineapple syrup and, using an electric whisk, beat to a soft consistency. Spoon into the tin on top of the pineapple and smooth it out so it’s level.

4 Bake for approximately 35 mins. Leave to

stand for 5 mins, then turn out onto a plate. Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream.
