TRANSCRIPT
Dear Parents and Guardians, I can’t believe we are almost at the end of the first
semester! We have been extremely busy ensuring
our students have the adequate resources needed to
be successful in their everyday lives. We also want
to ensure our teaching faculty feels supported and
they too have the resources they need to provide
an environment of high caliber instruction. A new
evaluation instrument for teachers was rolled out
over the summer that requires administrators to
evaluate teachers based on specific components.
These components address an environment of
respect and rapport, classroom procedures, student
behavior, discussion techniques, and assessments.
This practice allows our teachers to be more re-
flective of their practice. It also gives evaluators a
real opportunity to focus on improvement of in-
struction in the classroom. I am extremely excited to
report we have added
three more educators to
our list of nationally board
certified teachers: Mr.
Neil Tejano, Ms. Jan
Dudzik, and Mr. Michael
Mascari. Thank you to the Friends of Whitney Young for
their continuous support of our school, our Local
School Council under the fearless leadership of
Ms. Julia Spearman, our Family Night volunteers
who do so much for our Academic Center Pro-
gram, our PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student Organi-
zation), and you parents for guiding, supporting,
and advising our young people so they can become
productive citizens of our society. We remain competitive in almost every area as-
sessed including our athletic and extracurricular
programs. Our Academic Center Program was
very successful in the fall winning the city cross
country championships for both boys and girls.
Our golf team, girls tennis, and girls volleyball
won city championships, and our girls and boys
basketball teams are ranked in the top 10 in the
country. Our chess team finished 4th nationally and
were national champions in the speed round. We
had many students who were awarded superior in
the various music contests we participated in, and
our play A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to
the Forum this year was phenomenal. I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season. Im-
pact the life of a child other than your own. Make
a positive difference in our society, and most of all
recognize the fact everyone has something positive
to offer!
Sincerely,
Joyce D. Kenner, Ed. D. Principal

Lord of the Dance What started out as an innocent senior
prank, turned into a youtube video that
went viral, and spawned interviews with
several news organizations such as Good
Morning America, ABC7 Chicago, and
Fox News Chicago. Senior Norris Ogbuagu began with a few
dance moves in front of teachers in the
blue house in order to get a few laughs.
He was thoroughly trumped by Dean of
Students Mr. John Fanning who did some
"Riverdancing" of his own. This was a
great example of positive student-teacher
interaction here at Whitney Young. The youtube video can be seen on the web
at http://www.youtube.com/watch?

was seen nationwide, can be viewed at

Thirty-three and Counting Congratulations go out to Ms. Jan Dudzik,
Mr. Michael Mascari, and Mr. Neil Tejano
for reaching the plateau of National Board
Certification. There are now thirty-three
WY teachers in the NBCT directory. When teachers of this calibre are teamed
with highly motivated students and caring
parents, the results are phenomenal - just
look around!

High School Heroes Twenty-two accounting students took part in a one-day teaching experience through
Junior Achievement as a "High School Hero." The students travelled to Manierre Ele-
mentary School in a Chicago Trolley with volunteers from the accounting firm PwC on
November 30. Teams of WY students taught classes in grades K-3 using compelling
stories about helping, working, earning, and saving. Hands-on activities that engaged
the students and introduced the economic role of individuals were also used. Well done, and a big thank you goes out to Ms. Heaney for her efforts in this event.
NFTE Competition A team from Whitney Young has made it to the national finals of the World Series of
Innovation! More than 700 student teams from across the country sent in their 60-
second videos detailing their creative solutions to a variety of business challenges. Phil-
lip Gordon and Antonio Smith wrote an app that allows people to build their own ward-
robe based on the things that their favorite celebrities, designers, and other fashion
icons are wearing. They are then connected to a variety of retailers. Good luck to the team, and thanks to Ms. Kane for her guidance here.

Science Department Grant Congratulations to Mr. Solomon and the Academic Center 7th Grade Environmental
Science group! They have won a Pets in the Classroom Grant for 2012. This grant will
allow Mr. Solomon and the 7th graders to upgrade the aquariums in Room 330. The
aquariums will receive upgraded filters and be stocked with African Rift-Lake Cichlids.
It is hoped that by observing and caring for the aquariums, students will gain a sense of
responsibility and respect for life. The students will see directly how their behavior and
actions affect other life. In addition, studies show that the presence of animals tends to
reduce tensions in a classroom. Show your Ackie pride by stopping by Room 330, and
by visiting http://petsintheclassroom.org.

Math Team Dominates The Whitney Young Math Team is off to a great start.
The team is currently in first place in all of the leagues
they participate in: CCML, CJML, NSML, and Mandel-
brot Regional. While first place in all of these leagues is
impressive, most notable is first place in the NSML
where Whitney Young is ahead of the top math teams in
the state, including IMSA, Stevenson, and Naperville
North. Special congratulations to freshman Jason Liu for
earning a perfect score in the Algebra contest and senior
Guiping Xie for earning a perfect score in the Precalculus

Student Dress The reputation of a school is based to a great extent upon the behavior and appearance of its student
body. Student dress should reflect the importance that education plays in every student's life. All
students are expected to dress and groom themselves neatly and modestly in clothes that are appro-
priate for an academic environment. When there is any question about the suitability of a student's
attire, it is the final authority of the school principal or assistant principal as to whether a young
man's or young lady's attire or general appearance is acceptable. Students must wear shoes. For safety reasons, ID cards must be carried at all times. Students are not allowed to wear picks/combs in their hair or wear sunglasses, identical clothing or
any clothing that identifies them as a member of any non-school sponsored organization. Also,
clothing or apparel with inappropriate/offensive pictures, words or lettering which denotes or sug-
gests gang membership or gang affiliation is not permitted. Other examples of inappropriate dress
are halter/tube/tank tops with spaghetti-type straps, bare midriffs, unbuttoned/revealing shirts/
blouses/pants, team jerseys without a shirt underneath, jogging/gym type shorts or walking shorts
that do not extend down to the top of the knee, skin tight clothing, short skirts or dresses and under-
shirts/undergarments worn as outerwear. Hats, hoods, head bands, scarves, kerchiefs, or do-rags are not to be worn in the school building.
This rule applies to males and females. Students who wear hats to school are to place their hats in
their lockers upon arrival. Students are not allowed to keep their hats with them during the school
day. Confiscated hats will be returned to the parents only. Exceptions will be given by the principal
or assistant principal to individual students if they are satisfying religious requirements. Gym uniforms are not appropriate attire in classrooms. Violators of these rules are subject to disci-
plinary action.
