Computer Science Education Week is coming! Each year Computer Science Education Week is observed, in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906). Computer science provides a foundation for virtually any career - everybody can benefit from learning the basics. Rich-mond River High School is hosting a ONE HOUR workshop on the 9th of December 2013. It's a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code" and show that anyone can learn the basics

to be a maker, a creator, an innovator. All parents and students are invited to attend the event. All you need to do is create an account on www.khanacademy.com and add Mr Prince as a 'COACH', Bring a set of headphones on the day and be prepared to have fun! Visit this video if you don't know how to add a coach: http://youtu.be/V_XXPW71B7Q Regards, Cameron Prince Mathematics Dept

Looking after our local catchment Last Tuesday, 8.1 walked down to banks of the Wilson River to plant trees native to this area. This was a joint activity with the Wilson River Catchment Schools Education and Restoration Project. We replanted a replica of the rainforest that once grew there, before it was cleared. We hope by doing this animals will return to the area including ones on the endangered species list like koalas who could find refuge in the growing forest. We planted a range of different native trees, such as red gum, bottle brush and lilly pilly. These were chosen especially for this area and will be able to hold the soil together so it doesn’t con-taminate our river as much when it floods. This project is also carried out by Banyam Baigham Landcare Group, which we are both a part of. This program really helped to give our class and other classes more awareness of what is going on in our local surroundings and ways in which we can help. By Yaz and Amber on behalf of 8.1.

From the Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers As the end of the school year approaches once again I would like to comment on a couple of important initiatives at the school. Roll Marking for Senior Students In recent years we extended additional privileges to our senior students granting them permission to use their identification card to swipe in and out of school that would include leaving the school grounds during lunch breaks, arriving late if they had study periods at the beginning of the day and leaving early if they had study periods at the end of the day. This privilege is not automatic and does come with the responsibility of being a role model for the rest of the school. Students who were granted this privilege signed an agreement stating that they would comply with the school uniform policy, sign in and out of the school through the Front Office and attend all scheduled classes, including assemblies. Unfortunately a significant number of our senior students have not been meeting these responsibilities. Most importantly the major issue is a large number of students truanting classes, including arriving late and leaving the school early without permission during normal class times. This has a huge influence on the academic outcomes for the whole cohort. So as at the beginning of 2014 all senior students will be required to be at school for Period 1 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Roll call will be held from 8:35 until 8:45 a.m. for Year 11 in the MPU and for Year 12 in the River Theatre. Students who arrive late by bus after 8:45 a.m. will sign in with the Deputy Principals. All other later arrivals will be deemed unacceptable and will be managed through our Deputy Principals. On Wednesdays Year 11 students needing to attend sport will be allowed to swipe on before 9 a.m. It is important to note that all senior students will attend period 1 classes and those students with study periods will report to the School Library where they will swipe in as for any other study period. All seniors will be required to swipe in to the Library for all study periods and failure to do this will be managed as a truancy matter. Assessment Requirements for Senior Students We have recently had a number of occurrences where some of our senior students have not been attending their HSC classes. This has resulted in these students missing vital learning opportunities and in some instances

they have missed vital formal HSC assessment tasks. It is important to note that if students are to receive an HSC they need to demonstrate sustained diligence in every course and must sit each formal assessment task for each course. If students do not have a satisfactory reason for being absent on the day of any formal assessment they will not receive any marks for the assessment task, greatly disadvantaging themselves and reducing their overall performance. If students do have a legitimate reason for being away on the day of the formal assessment it is their responsibility to obtain an illness and misadventure form from the Front Office. If students are genuinely sick the school requires a Doctor’s Certificate to support the application. For further advice on this matter please refer to the school’s Preliminary and HSC Assessment Book. Stop Work Meeting Tuesday 3 December (9 a.m. until 11 a.m.) This Tuesday 3rd December the NSW Teachers Federation has called a stop work meeting from 9-11 a.m. to discuss the salaries offer from the DEC. At this stage I am advised that most teachers will be attending the stop work meeting. In line with Federation authorisation the school will provide minimal supervision only of students during these hours. Teachers will return to work at around 11 a.m. with recess from 11-11:15 a.m. The school canteen will be open during this time for recess. After recess roll call will occur from 11:15 to 11:30 a.m. in the regular roll call meeting areas. Year 11 will meet in the MPU and Year 12 will meet in the River Theatre. The remainder of the day will be as normal with Period 4 beginning at 11:30 a.m. The Year 7 Reward Excursion to Sea World scheduled for this day will not be affected by this stop work meeting and the excursion will be occurring as per usual. Mr Dave Harvey Principal From the Deputies Year 6 Orientation Day Thanks to Mr French who has been working hard over the past few weeks on the enormous task of working with our 27 partner primary schools and staff from our seven teaching faculties to organise our annual Year 6 Orientation Day on Wednesday of next week. This is an extremely important day for all students who will be part of our incoming Year 7 cohort in 2014. Mr French and his team will, no doubt, ensure all involved have a fantastic day and leave feeling excited about starting at Richmond River High School in 2014.

End of Year Formal Assemblies It is always rewarding at this time of year to attend Formal Assemblies which acknowledge student achievement and success from throughout the year. The first of these was held yesterday with our Sports Formal Assembly, which provided a reminder of the wealth and breadth of sporting talent among our students. This is developed not only at school but often, more significantly, through the support of families and community sporting organisations over many years. As such, our Sports Formal Assemblies are as much a celebration of achievement at school as they are a celebration of the achievements of our young people across the broader community. I look forward to our upcoming formal assemblies celebrating academic achievement on Tuesday the 10th of December and Thursday the 12th of December. Student Recognition and Reward Scheme At both of these upcoming assemblies, for Years 10 and 11 on the Tuesday and Years 7 to 9 on Thursday, our Principal, Mr Harvey, will be awarding Principal’s Awards and conducting a draw for students who have worked their way through our Student recognition & Reward Scheme to the level of “Supa Dupa” Certificates, Faculty Achievement Certificates or School Achievement Certificates. Over the course of next week, all students will be reminded during their Year Meetings of how many “Gotcha’s”, faculty Merits or School merits they need to collect in order to progress to this level and, in turn be eligible for a Principal’s Award or for the Principal’s mystery draw during our upcoming academic formal assemblies. Positive Behaviour for Learning The focus of our teaching of Positive Behaviour for Learning during Year Meetings next week will be on respectful behaviour outside the classroom while at school. In particular, students will be asked to consider the importance of sharing active areas of the playground responsibly, and also showing sportsmanship and being tolerant of the skill level of others. This provides a timely follow up to the content of our Formal Sports Assembly this week. In addition, students will be reminded of the importance of respecting the personal space of others. Mr M Hensley Deputy Principal

River Idol is Back! Many of you who have had older students graduate from our school and even those parents who are ex students will fondly remember River Idol. 2013 sees the return of the talent quest which is truly a part of the tradition of Richmond River. For those unfamiliar with the concept, the style of the show is not much different

from Australia's Got Talent. Students have the opportunity to perform solo or in groups to showcase their skill. Examples of acts include music per-formances, dance, drama acts, feats of strength, stand up comedy, hip hop, and more! All items must be appropriate for a school audience. Students need to register their event at the CAPA staffroom before Monday 2nd December. Perform-ers will need to bring their own instruments if required. Microphones, guitar amps, leads and a drum kit will all be sup-plied by the school.

River Idol will be held on Tuesday 17th December, periods 6 and 7 in the MPU. Students will need to audition earlier in the day to get through to the grand final after lunch. Surprise guest judges will give each act some feedback and at the end of the concert the King/s and Queen/s of The River will be announced and have the fantastic honour of winning the first River Idol to be held for a long time.

Youth Connections North Coast (YCNC) is working with young people to organise youth events, called sessions in Lismore and Nimbin as part of their Community Builders program for young people between 14 and 18 years of age. Each sessions has its own theme such as band nights, unplugged (acoustic music), cabaret, dis-co/dance events, outdoor cinema, comedy, Karaoke and other performances. The events are designed, promoted, performed and run by young people for young people. YCNC’s role is to facilitate the process during which young people learn event coordination and performance skills. The purpose of sessions is to provide safe entertainment, social inclusion and an opportunity for young people to showcase their talents within the Lismore LGA. All sessions events are supervised by youth workers, security guards and volunteers. Transport to and from sessions events is the responsibility of parents and carers. sessions welcomes the input and support of parents, carers and schools. YCNC would like to collaborate with all high schools in Lismore. High schools can pledge their sup-port of sessions by any of the following: informing students about upcoming sessions events by including promotional information in

newsletters, displaying posters etc promoting student involvement in sessions either through performing or participating in an

organising committee (attending regular meetings) putting a sessions e-poster on the school’s website providing a student welfare worker or other volunteer to attend sessions events, and/or

putting your logo on the hard copy sessions poster.
