HOPE HOUSE NEWSLETTER “Where We Go From Surviving to Thriving”

May-June 2015

Watercolor Classes

We received the Region 2 Arts and Cultural Heritage Grant! Watercolor

classes have begun. Please check your calendar for dates – one Thursday

each month. In addition, a select group of our talented artists are teaching

children how to do watercolor under the instruction of Judith Selby. Their

debut is in June- stay tuned for the results!

BSU Recreation Center/Ruttger’s Fitness Center

The surveys are in and the results are that 56% of our clients

utilized the BSU Rec Center, while 32% utilized Ruttgers. Our plan

for the summer will be to enjoy the outdoors and use Ruttgers for

those who want an indoor facility. The BSU Recreation Center

membership will re-start in the fall.

Hope House Gets Repairs!

Thanks to the George W. Neilson Foundation, Hope House has received funding to update the

lighting and electrical in the house and garage, put up a railing in the garage storage area,

install flooring in the drop-in center, and a new roof and siding on Hope House! We are

thrilled, because the building really needed it!

Members Meeting will be May 8, 2015

from 1:30-3:00 at Hope House.

Equine Assistance in Therapeutic Recovery

“The Horse Project” has started!

You can join the project in May, June, or July if you complete a

liability form and optional short surveys There is no riding in this

project. The horses mirror your emotions so the therapists can see how

to help you become more confident, reduce stress and handle

community situations. Check it out! If you go, dress for outdoors and

in something that can take a little dirt or dust. And thank you to

United Way, for the Venture Grant which supports this project! ☺

Try Different Kinds of Art

Susan Kedzie joins us on Tuesdays

in May to give you more samples of

art to try.

Beltrami County Local Advisory Council

What is the group that meets on the second Friday of each month in the Hope House garage? Every county in

Minnesota has a group like this to give advice to the counties about gaps in services. If you see a mental health

need that isn’t being met in our community, please join us to tell the county what it is. You do not have to say

you are a Hope House member to be part of the meeting. It is ok to identify yourself as an interested

community member.

Words from Shelby...As my internship comes to a close, I have a few parting words for my fellow mentors and

clients. I am deeply appreciative of the Hope House staff for accepting me to intern at Hope House, as it has

been a life-changing experience. I learned much more than I thought was possible, and that it does not just take

knowledge to become a mental health provider, but a caring heart. I want to encourage the Hope House

members to always do the best you can do, and keep pushing yourself to be the best you can be. I have enjoyed

getting to know everybody, and creating opportunities for a healthier lifestyle. Coming out of this internship, I

am confident that I have acquired much more insight and understanding of the mental health field, and for that,

I am very thankful.

Options Include:

Painting Collage

Pastel Drawing

Jewelry Making Felting

Words from Alyson….I had a wonderful experience at Hope House. I learned a lot about resources throughout

the Bemidji area. I also learned more about living day to day with a mental illness in a real way and not from a

textbook or video. I also had the opportunity to observe and sometimes take part in a number of groups,

activities and classes which expanded my mind about what groups are like and the cooperative nature of the

group process.

Wellness Recovery Action Plan, Seminar One

The seminar is being held on Tuesday, May 26 to Thursday, May

28 from 8-5:30 each day. This program helps you set your own

recovery goals and create a plan of tools and resources to achieve

those goals. The program promotes higher levels of wellness,

focuses on decreasing severe symptoms, traumatic life events, and

the need for costly therapies, and build hope and empowerment. If

you are interested in WRAP training for yourself, a grant will pay

your gas and hotel to Park Rapids where the seminar is held. You

must have your own transportation, and complete the application.

You will either be paid through the loan fund, or at the end of the

conference after the certificate of completion. Please see your

worker if you are interested.

RECOVERY GOAL

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

The National Alliance on Mental Illness is restarting again in Bemidji. On Tuesday, May 5th, there will be an

informational meeting from 5:30-7:30 at the Bemidji Public Library. This meeting is open to anyone who has

an interest in mental health- consumers, family members, and providers.

UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

Community Suicide Prevention Workshop

NAMI is presenting a free community suicide prevention workshop on Thursday, May 28, from 9-12 with

lunch provided at the Prime West Conference Room. If you are interested, please call Stephanie Downey at

218-308-8002 to sign up.

To Sweeten or not to Sweeten? A Look Into Artificial Sugar Additives

Think going low-cal is a good way to get your sugar fix? Think again. Artificial sweeteners

were designed to be less fattening sugar substitutes without the gut-busting consequences.

However, there are a cascade of health issues that can come with the ingestion of these sugar

substitutes. “Research suggests that they may prevent us from associating sweetness with

caloric intake. As a result, we may crave more sweets, tend to choose sweet food over

nutritious food, and gain weight” (AHA, 2012). In the Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis,

daily consumption of diet drinks was associated with a 36% greater risk for metabolic

syndrome and a 67% increased risk for type 2 diabetes. To reduce your risk of health concerns,

try avoiding products that are labeled “low-cal,” “diet,” “sugar-free,” or “no sugar added,” as

they likely contain sugar additives.

Being mindful and aware of what you put into your body is key to a happier and healthier

life. Use your creative energy to find ways to lower your desire for sweets and seek out other

flavors for satisfaction. This can be as simple as putting a mint sprig and lemon into your daily

water, or use spices like cinnamon to jazz up your morning oatmeal. The benefits of avoiding

artificial sweeteners heavily outweigh the potential health concerns.

Check your food labels at home and throw

away everything that has on its label:

-Aspartame

-Acesulfame K

-Saccharin

-NutraSweet

-Splenda
