During a recent home visit, one of the Veterans on his caseload became very distraught and began sobbing uncontrollably. Greg aempted to console the Veteran and asked quesons to determine an appropriate course of acon. The Veteran reported that his mother passed away recently and his girlfriend had just broken up with him. Greg decided that the Veteran needed counseling and called the case manager at St. Vincent de Paul for assistance. As he aempted to reach the case manager, the Veteran reached around the side of the couch on which they were both sing, pulled out a handgun, and threatened to harm himself. Greg ended the call and immediately dialed 911. While on the phone with the 911 operator, Greg connued to verbally engage the Veteran and convinced him to surrender his weapon. Greg took the gun and placed it on a table that was next to the couch, but away from the Veteran. He remained on the phone with 911 and was advised that law enforcement had been dispatched. A few moments later, the Veteran pulled out another gun and placed it on the couch between himself and Greg. Again, Greg asked the Veteran to give him the gun and he complied. By the me the police arrived onsite, Greg had taken control of the situaon, deescalated the distressed Veteran and collected three of his firearms. The police took the Veteran into custody without incident and transported him to the VA Hospital for treatment. Aſter the ordeal, Greg stated that he never felt threatened and was more concerned about the Veterans safety. Had it not been for Gregs quick thinking, prior training and good judgment, this situaon could have had a tragic ending. Greg calmly stayed the course and thanks to him, this Veteran received the help he needed and is once again stable and doing well. Thank you Greg, for being compassionate and going above and beyond for someone in need. The Housing Authority has demonstrated a commitment to helping Veterans with disabilies at Duval Park in mid-Pinellas County by providing 44 project-based housing vouchers. They have stepped up again by providing 25 project-based housing vouchers at the Ranch @ Pinellas Park that will help families, including at least 10 Veteran families, who have been homeless. Now, as we break ground on 21 units at Evergreen Village, the Pinellas County Housing Authority has again pledged housing vouchers to help meet the needs of these homeless individuals and families. Fall 2019 Where Recovery Works!

Boley Centers’ mission is to enrich the lives of people in recovery

by providing the highest quality treatment rehabilitation,

employment and housing services.

An Everyday Boley Hero Gregory Horst has worked in the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program at Boley Centers since August 2018. He is responsible for providing employment services and other related assistance to Veterans who are referred by St. Vincent de Paul and their immediate family members. Greg, who is also a Veteran, can be counted on to lend a hand to anyone in need. He is a skilled professional who shows compassion for others and takes pride in his work. Greg has a calm, gentle presence and is not easily rattled during stressful situations.

During a recent home visit, one of the Veterans on his caseload became very distraught and began sobbing uncontrollably. Greg attempted to console

the Veteran and asked questions to determine an appropriate course of action. The Veteran reported that his mother passed away recently and his girlfriend had just broken up with him. Greg decided that the Veteran needed counseling and called the case manager at St. Vincent de Paul for assistance. As he attempted to reach the case manager, the Veteran reached around the side of the couch on which they were both sitting, pulled out a handgun, and threatened to harm himself. Greg ended the call and immediately dialed 911. While on the phone with the 911 operator, Greg continued to verbally engage the Veteran and convinced him to surrender his weapon.

By the time the police arrived onsite, Greg had taken control of the situation, deescalated the distressed Veteran and collected three of his firearms. The police took the Veteran into custody without incident and transported him to the VA Hospital for treatment. After the ordeal, Greg stated that he never felt threatened and was more concerned about the Veteran’s safety. Had it not been for Greg’s quick thinking, prior training and good judgment, this situation could have had a tragic ending. Greg calmly stayed the course and thanks to him, this Veteran received the help he needed and is once again stable and doing well.
