World Health Organisation defines infertility as a failure to conceive after unprotected intercourse for a period of one year. The stigma of infertility leads to stress and tensions developing within the family. Along most ethnic groups and cultures the social stigma associated with this condition often induces a sense of despair and personal failure. To combat this, assisted reproductive techniques (ART) have become widely accepted and proven modalities in treatment of infertile couples.

The success of modern ART has completely revolutionized both the evaluation and treatment of infertility. It encompasses all techniques involving direct manipulation of oocytes outside of the body. The first and still most common form of ART is in vitro fertilization (IVF).

IVF procedure consists of stimulating the ovaries medically with self-administered subcutaneous gonadotropin injections. The stimulated ovaries produce numerous follicles, which are drained using transvaginal ultrasound guidance. The oocytes are then mixed with the prepared semen sample and then incubated. Three to five days after retrieval, the embryo is placed into the mother’s womb where it grows into a baby.

In the past, men with low sperm count or absent sperms were considered sterile and untreatable by any means other than the use of donor sperm. ART procedures these days offer them a chance to father their own genetic offspring. The option is ICSI with sperms obtained through microsurgical procedure including PESA, MESA, TESE etc

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI),is an in vitro fertilization procedure in which a single sperm obtained either from the semen or from the procedures mentioned above is injected directly into an egg.
