JOIN US FOR A

TRY OUT SESSION Going into our 16th successful season, Victorious Elite

Allstars is the TOP program in

Manteca. We believe that our

family environment, coaching staff

and character building make

our gym the best in the Central

Valley.

Our athletes are ages 3-18, no

experience necessary to make a

team. Try out day is more

like an evaluation of skills. The athletes will demonstrate

Jumps, Tumbling Skills, and Choreography. They will have

a chance to meet the staff and other athletes in their age

group. Athletes are evaluated in groups.

Review the Try out schedule below for dates and times

that coordinate with your athletes age group (as of August

31, 2019 or December 31, 2019; depends on level).

cheerleader’s set schedule will be sent to you

via email by Sunday, June 16th. VEA practices

You can find this under forms on our website

www.veagym.com. This form is used for

excused absences only and must be turned in 1

week in advance of the absence attached to

the proper paperwork that is required. (see

bylaws)

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY CHILD IS

COMPLAINING ABOUT BEING HURT?

We have a team nurse and physical therapist

on staff. Unless there are obvious signs of a

broken bone, please consult with them first so

they can assess the injury. Many times, this

will save you from unnecessary doctors’ visits

as many cheer related injuries are minor

sprains and pulled muscles.

WHAT IS THE CHAIN OF COMMAND FOR

QUESTIONS/COMPLAINTS/CONCERNS?

Front Desk>Team Coach>Program Director

(Jasmine)>Owner (Amy). Please do not talk

amongst yourselves to find the answers or wait

communicating with team coaches, please

respect their gym and private time. Email is

the best form of communication, unless

otherwise stated by your team coach.

FAQS

WHAT IS CROSS COMPETING?

It is very common in the all-star industry

to have cheerleaders compete on more

than one team. We will be asking some of

our cheerleaders to crossover to help our

teams be more successful. There is no

extra tuition charge to cross compete but

there are additional competition fees.

Athletes are invited to cross compete by

team coaches. WHAT IS THE SPIRIT CLUB?

We are looking for parent volunteers from

each team to form the Spirit Club. The

Spirit Club responsibilities would include

coordinating goody bags and community

events.

WHAT IF I CAN’T TUMBLE? DOES THAT

MEAN I AM NOT GOING TO MAKE A

“GOOD” TEAM?

No. All of the teams at Victorious Elite

Allstars are “good” teams! Everyone has a

place here. Tumbling is not a

requirement. It is something you will

learn with the tumbling instructors.

5

DO OUR ATHLETES PARTICIPATE IN

ANYTHING BESIDE WEEKLY PRACTICES &

COMPETITIONS?

Yes! Our athletes perform in community

events (4th of July & Christmas Parade, Never

Forgotten Memorial Celebration, Arts in the

Park, Pumpkin Fair). Athletes also can attend

Summer Fun Camp, Team Bonding Events,

Holiday Parties and get paired up with a Big

Sis/Little Sis. With teamwork and never-

ending fun, our athletes develop memories

and friendships that last a lifetime! WHAT WILL MY CHILD LEARN IN ALLSTAR

CHEER?

Our athletes are trained in dance, tumbling,

stunting and jumps. We push them to excel

as individuals and as team members. We put

a strong emphasis on building life skills:

character, hard work, integrity, dedication &

loyalty. We see leaders emerge every day in

our gym; for us that is the true sign of a

successful program.

BY-LAWS & PARTICIPATION RULES The purpose for these by-laws and rules are to provide parents and cheerleaders with the information needed for successful participation with Victorious Elite Allstars. If at any time during the season a coach feels it is necessary to dismiss a cheerleader from a team at VEA, it is by the coaches’ discretion. Failure to comply with these by-laws may result in a write up, suspension or dismissal from Victorious Elite Allstars. By-Laws are subject to revision. Please read each item carefully to ensure you are clear on all participation rules. Cheerleader Conduct

I. All athletes are expected to be on time and in full uniform or practice gear for all competitions, practices, and other events. All jewelry must be removed prior to these events.

II. During competitions athletes will sit in the designated team area with their coaches. Since these are team-oriented events, athletes need to remain focused and therefore non-athletes will not be permitted in the team area.

III. Appropriate practice attire is mandatory. This includes the designated VEA practice clothes on cheer nights and VEA colors on tumbling nights. If an athlete fails to arrive in the proper attire, new practice clothes will be issued and charged to their account or the athlete must stay after practice for extra conditioning.

IV. All athletes are required to practice in tennis shoes on the cheer mat. (Bare feet and socks are unacceptable)

V. Nails must be kept short for all team activities to ensure safety for all participants. Acrylic nails are not allowed.

VI. Unnatural hair colors are not allowed during competition season. VII. No cell phones allowed during an athlete’s designated practice time. Cell phones must be placed in

the designated area per team coach’s instructions during practice hours. VIII. Foul or derogatory language is not accepted or tolerated at any time. IX. Athletes are not to engage in any negative talk concerning another participant, parent, coach, staff

member, VEA or any other gym. Any negative conversations, either verbal or via the internet can result in suspension or removal for the team.

X. Challenging the authority of the coaches or staff members by any athlete will not be tolerated. XI. Athletes will not tumble, stunt or do any activity without a qualified VEA staff in the area

supervising. XII. Athletes are expected to give 100% effort during every VEA event. Anything less affects the entire

team and consequences may apply at the coach’s discretion. XIII. Athletes must be flexible with any changes made regarding choreography, stunts and formations. XIV. All athletes must be considerate of teammates and coaches at all times. This includes good

personal hygiene. Please wear deodorant to all VEA events. XV. All athletes must support every team at VEA. This means staying to watch each performance at

competitions; even if your team has already performed and received awards. Late arrivals & early departures from competition will not be tolerated without prior permission from your team coach. Prior permission means before the day of competition. There may be some competitions that we will excuse our youngest athletes from staying the entire day depending on the length of the competition. These exceptions will be designated after receiving the performance schedule and before the day of the event.

XVI. All athletes must remain in full uniform or required dress attire for the duration of each VEA event. XVII. No food, drinks, or gum allowed on any cheer floor.

11

Page 13: Where Character is Built And Champions are Made · Team Practices: Starts June 17th Mandatory Choreography with ShowTyme -21 (tentative) OTHER IMPORTANT DATES June 17-20 Mandatory

XVIII. Athletes should bring a water or healthy beverage to every practice to stay hydrated. Beverages and snacks will not be provided by VEA but athletes may purchase items from the service window.

XIX. Athletes are not allowed in the parent viewing area at any time unless given permission by a coach. XX. All personal items must be kept in your cubby/locker. Do not leave your personal items on any

cheer floors or homework tables. Cubbies are not assigned and are first come first serve basis each night. VEA is not responsible for any lost or stolen items. Please have all items of clothing marked with your name on the inside tag. Unclaimed lost and found items will be donated after one week.

XXI. No athletes are allowed in the office area. Athletes may ring the bell at the service window for water, snacks, first aid, lost and found or any questions.

XXII. Athletes may only be on the cheer floor at their scheduled times. Athletes are not allowed to play on or use the equipment without permission and supervision from a VEA coach.

XXIII. Athletes must be respectful of the gym, facilities, and equipment. Damages to any equipment or facility area due to an athlete’s carelessness will result in a repair charge to their account. The bathrooms, cheer floors and cubby area must be kept free of athlete’s garbage/snack items.

XXIV. Athletes must wait inside the gym after practices until their parents arrive to pick them up. XXV. We have a zero-tolerance policy for illegal activities, including but not limited to; Use of drugs,

alcohol or tobacco, firearms, guns, any type of weapon or contraband, shoplifting or theft or any kind while representing VEA. Any violation of the above or any other rules set forth by the law may be grounds for immediate dismissal from the team and organization (without refund). Punishment will be up to the Coaches & Staff to what will be best for the child, the team and the organization.

XXVI. Athletes are not permitted to participate in classes, clinics or camps outside of the gym without permission from their team coaches. This is to ensure that our athletes are using safe practices in skill building. Our concern is for the good health of the athletes and the VEA teams they have committed to for the season.

Competition Etiquette

I. The look and actions of a VEA cheerleader is very important. How VEA is viewed is vital to the success of the teams and the program as a whole. Athletes are expected to be in competition warm-ups, uniforms, or VEA wearables, hair in a ponytail with NO JEWELRY whenever at competition. This applies to before and after competing. No other attire should be worn (i.e. other sweatshirts, flip flops, UGGS, sandals, street clothes, etc.). When accepting awards, athletes should be in full uniform and ready to be photographed for publicity shots.

II. Parents, family and friends are encouraged to come to all competitions. They are expected to be spectators, not extra coaches. They are not allowed with the team during meetings, warm ups, or other team required times unless given permission by the coach.

III. To fully show your support of your child’s team, parents and fans are expected to wear VEA clothing to each competition and community event. It is important to the success of our teams that we show unity and spirit. We also ask that each spectator sit in the designated VEA area.

IV. All athletes must arrive on time (as designated by the coaches) and stay for the duration of the competition until all teams have performed.

V. Athletes must arrive in full uniform, hair and makeup at the designated time on the competition note.

VI. Any awards, banners, plaques, trophies become the property of VEA and will remain with at the VEA Gym. Any money won will be used to improve the facility or towards all athletes at VEA.

VII. In the event that our team is outscored by another team in their division, athletes should make a point to graciously congratulate the other team. In the event that our team has the highest score, athletes will sit with their team and not celebrate until our name is specifically called. The second-place team deserves their moment of recognition.

Page 14: Where Character is Built And Champions are Made · Team Practices: Starts June 17th Mandatory Choreography with ShowTyme -21 (tentative) OTHER IMPORTANT DATES June 17-20 Mandatory

VIII. Good sportsmanship is vital to the success our of teams. Under the Varsity Guidelines, any violation of good sportsmanship from athletes or parents will result in a 2.5-point penalty from every VEA team competing. This includes foul language, talking disrespectfully to other teams or event officials, or any behavior that looks in bad taste.

IX. For any traveling competitions, athletes are required to arrive at least one day prior to the first day of competition.

Attendance

I. ALL team events, including practices, camps, competitions and community events are MANDATORY.

II. Absences from a competition will result in automatic removal from the team. III. No absences are allowed during the two weeks before a competition, absolutely NO exceptions. IV. Don’t be late! Tardiness will not be tolerated (this includes practices and competitions).

Excessive tardies will result in removal from the team. V. The team will be top priority and will not come second to other extracurricular activities (i.e. sports,

clubs, etc.) Upon signing up for VEA, it is important to know that attendance is vital to the success and progression of the team.

VI. Practices can change or extra practice can be added to the schedule before a competition. These will be scheduled at the discretion of the team coach and will be mandatory.

VII. All athletes must arrive to events at the designated times and stay for the duration of the event. If parents must leave an event early, it is their responsibility to find their athlete a ride after the event is over. If an athlete arrives late to an event or leaves early without prior permission it may result in a strike, suspension or dismissal from the team.

VIII. Attendance is crucial to team success. An “Absent Request Form” (ARF) must be filled out prior to the missed event. Each unexcused absence will result in a $25 Fine that will be applied to the athlete’s account Unexcused absences include arriving late or leaving early from a competition without prior permission from Amy.

IX. Excused Absences: Contagious Illness (doctor’s note required), School function that affects grade (note from teacher required), Death in the family & approved Vacation during the summer (Vacation Request Form submitted). 3 Excused Absences are allowed during the season.

X. Unexcused Absences: School dances, Traffic, too much homework, Feeling tired & Transportation issues. 2 Unexcused absences are allowed during the season.

XI. Athletes are required to come to practice if they are not feeling well, and may sit out and watch practice. If a coach feels that an athlete is too sick to stay and watch practice upon arrival, they may send them home. Especially two weeks before a competition.

XII. Absences resulting from a contagious illness or family emergency require a phone call prior to the missed event and an Absent Request Form will be due the day the athlete returns to practice. Illnesses that require a missed event will require a doctor’s note that can be attached to the ARF. These absences must be reported to a coach or staff member at least four hours prior to the missed event or it will be coded as an unexcused absence.

XIII. To request an excused absence, an Absence Request Form (ARF) must be submitted to your coach one week prior to the missed practice. It will be returned to you with a consequence document if applicable. This form is obtained via our website www.veagym.com under forms or from the office staff. If the absence adversely hinders the team, i.e. week of competition, the coach may decide to suspend the athlete for that competition or remove the athlete from their routine position.

XIV. In the case of being ill, injured or in an extreme family emergency, everything will be done to keep the cheerleader in his or her position. But if the illness, injury or emergency happens during a time that the success of the team is in jeopardy, the child may be taken out or put into a position that

Page 15: Where Character is Built And Champions are Made · Team Practices: Starts June 17th Mandatory Choreography with ShowTyme -21 (tentative) OTHER IMPORTANT DATES June 17-20 Mandatory

will not affect the overall success of the team. Injured athletes must come to all practices, competitions, and events in order to remain in the routine.

XV. During the months of June, July & August ONLY, each cheerleader is allowed two weeks’ vacation time off. A vacation request form must be filled out two weeks prior to absence and must be signed by a coach. Vacations are not excused during any of our camp dates. Vacations or absences during school breaks are not excused unless otherwise stated by your team coach (i.e. Fall or Spring Break). No absences allowed during VEA Cheer Camp or Mandatory Choreography.

XVI. No unexcused or school function absences are allowed during the two weeks prior to competition. If a graded school function is scheduled by a teacher, the coaches must be informed two weeks prior to the missed practice so they may change practice if necessary. Unexcused absences during the two weeks prior to a competition may result in suspension from the competition or removal from the team.

Parent Guidelines

I. It is essential that athletes, parents, coaches and staff have constant, productive communication. For updates and changes to schedules, it is the responsibility of athletes and parents to check the website, personal emails and phone messages and take-home notes distributed at practice. Check your emails weekly as this will be your main source of information from the VEA staff.

II. If you have questions, concerns or issues, please make sure you contact the appropriate staff member to discuss as soon as possible; in person meetings will be by appointment only.

III. Do not make assumptions about anything. Always ask the appropriate staff member. IV. VEA is always striving to improve. We are always open to positive suggestions. V. If you have an issue, please speak with a VEA staff member or coach as soon as possible. Many

times, miscommunication from your child or other parent can be misleading. If we do not know you have an issue, we cannot resolve it.

VI. Parents who are spreading negativity will not be allowed to stay in the parent viewing area during practices and may cause their athlete to be permanently removed from the program. In addition, this rule applies for social media (posts and comments) or negative conversations related to VEA that make their way back to our staff.

VII. Please make sure that office staff has updated contact information throughout the entire season (cell phones, work numbers, email addresses, etc.)

VIII. Respect the coach’s personal time and gym schedule. If you need to discuss your athlete with the coach, please leave a message with the office staff or send them an email.

IX. Approaching any coach or staff member with negative intent or concerns without an appointment is not tolerated.

X. Your opinion regarding practice and routine construction does not count. The staff makes all of the decisions regarding these matters. If you respect us enough to play a large role in your child’s life, please respect us enough to know that we always have your child’s best interest at heart. Decisions made in regard to your child’s training, level and team are made in what we (as experts in this field) feel will best help your child be successful.

XI. Parents must conduct themselves respectfully and appropriately at all VEA events. Sportsmanlike conduct must be used at all times. The moral make up and values of the parents and families that are involved with VEA are of the utmost importance. We value hard work, dedication, honesty, loyalty and integrity and expect the same from the families in our organization.

XII. The only people allowed on the gym floors are Coaches, Staff and Athletes. Parents, friends, relatives and siblings must remain in the viewing area during practice time.

XIII. Siblings of athletes cannot come inside the gym and watch practice unattended. An adult in the viewing room must supervise them. We do not have time to baby-sit.

Page 16: Where Character is Built And Champions are Made · Team Practices: Starts June 17th Mandatory Choreography with ShowTyme -21 (tentative) OTHER IMPORTANT DATES June 17-20 Mandatory

XIV. Coaches/Staff reserve the right to close practices at any time. This only occurs if the viewing area becomes negative or distracting. Or a coach may choose to close the viewing area as we approach a major competition/event (typically two weeks prior). This provides a quieter, more focused atmosphere for practices.

XV. Withholding your child from practice cannot be used as a form of discipline. This is unfair to the rest of the team as it hinders their success.

XVI. Parents will not contact the competition companies to find out information. These companies will only communicate with the VEA Program Director.

XVII. The Victorious Elite Allstars name or logo is not to be reproduced on any items purchased outside of the VEA Spirit Shop.

Financial Responsibility

I. Registration must be paid in full in order for cheerleaders to begin participation with Victorious Elite Allstars.

II. Payments made after the due date (provided in your payment contract) are subject to a late charge of $20.00. Failure to make the payment after one week of the due date will result in the tuition being charged to the credit card/bank card that you provided in your tuition contract.

III. Please discuss any family financial situations with the appropriate staff member (office/finance manager) before your payments are overdue. Please do not discuss your financial situations with coaches as this does not ensure the message gets relayed properly to our office/finance manager.

IV. Returned checks will result in an automatic $25.00 fee to cover all bank charges. This fee will be applied to your account. If problems with personal checks reoccur, the office staff may ask you for cash or money orders for all future payment.

V. If a cheerleader should quit or be dismissed from VEA at any time throughout the season, tuition in full will be remain due in full until fully paid off. (see payment contract for details)

VI. Upon signature of these by-laws parents and or cheerleaders are fully responsible for the full year of tuition for the 2018-2019 season.

VII. No privates or extra classes allowed if your tuition is past due. Private lessons are to be arranged with VEA instructors.

Fundraising

I. All individual fundraisers are voluntary. If you choose not to participate in an individual fundraiser, you will not receive money raised from that fundraiser.

II. Gym fundraisers are mandatory. Participants may choose to fundraise or opt out and pay the designated fee (See mandatory gym fundraiser contract). Proceeds from gym fundraisers will go directly towards new equipment, awards banquets, or anything else that may benefit all the participants at VEA.

III. Sponsors are encouraged and can go towards a specified individual or group. Any sponsors that do not name individuals will go towards all athlete accounts. Sponsorship letters can be found on our website under forms. One letter has been attached for your convenience.

IV. All proceeds raised by an individual athlete will automatically be applied to your account following the fundraiser. VEA is not a bank and will not “hold” fundraising profits for the duration of the season. Per our non-profit status, all fundraising profits organized by VEA must be applied towards program related items, such as: uniforms, practice attire, tuition and competition fees. Any fundraising profits remaining at the end of the season can be rolled over to the following season or will go into the general fund.

V. Select fundraisers will have a 10% processing fee taken from the total profit. This fee will cover the cost of pickup and delivery charges for the selected fundraisers.

Page 17: Where Character is Built And Champions are Made · Team Practices: Starts June 17th Mandatory Choreography with ShowTyme -21 (tentative) OTHER IMPORTANT DATES June 17-20 Mandatory

VI. In the event cheerleader quits during the season, all fundraising profits will go into the general fund and no money will be refunded.

VII. Extremely overdue accounts risk being sent to collections and participant being removed from the program.

“Family isn’t always about blood. It’s about who you care for. I’ve been a part of the VEA family since 2005 (six

years old) and have formed a special bond with people that have helped me grow into who I am today. VEA is

not just a gym where I practice; it’s a second home, a second family who I care about very much. I’m not just

cheering with my teammates, I’m cheering with my brothers and sisters. VEA strives to win but our coaches go

further than that by teaching us how to work together as a team. Our strong bonds help us get through victories

and losses. Winning may be our goal but it’s not everything. It’s more important to be there for each other and

work hard until our good is better and our better is best.”

We have stayed ever

MANDATORY GYM FUNDRAISER

We strive to keep our fees lower than any surrounding program from year to year. Every year

the costs for competitive cheerleading are raised by our vendors, but we strive to not let this

majorly affect our families. One way that we can keep costs low is by conducting mandatory

gym fundraisers. The fundraisers are usually in the form of a benefit dinner or raffle in which

we require every cheerleader to sell 4 tickets equal to $120.

This years’ mandatory fundraiser with be our annual “Pink & Black Affair” Dinner. It will be

held at Manteca Senior Center on Saturday, October 5, 2019. This event includes: catered

dinner from Texas Roadhouse, DJ/Live Music, Raffle Prizes & Games.

Please initial next the option of your choice:

_____Option 1:

I will participate in the mandatory group fundraiser and I agree to raise $120 for Victorious

Elite Allstars.

_____Option 2:

I will opt out of participating in the mandatory group fundraiser and I will pay $120 to

Victorious Elite Allstars at the designated time.

I have read and understand the mandatory gym fundraiser contract.

I have chosen Option _____ and agree to the terms of my choice.

HEALTHY EATING

The Healthiest Cheerleader

Becoming a strong healthy cheerleader does not start on the competition floor, nor does it even start at practice. A cheerleader becomes healthy and strong by eating right. As everyone knows, food fuels the body, but with the right combination of food, a body can maintain a much healthier balance, especially growing bodies that participate in highly active sports. Not only does eating the right food make your body strong and healthy, but it can also make

you mentally sharp, which is beneficial at school as well as practice, forming one well rounded individual. By choosing the right foods daily you are helping prevent injury and fatigue, therefore allowing yourself to be the

strongest cheerleader possible.

Below are some do’s and don’ts on how to make your body practice ready.

DON’T: • Don’t Skip meals: It is much better to have three well balanced meals, and several nutritious small snacks throughout the day, your metabolism actually slows down when you are not regularly eating. Conditioning and working out are going to be a lot simpler if your body is getting the amount of calories it needs daily. The amount of calories needed depends on age and gender. Age (Female) Estimated Calorie Needs 4-8 years old 1400-1800 calories 9-13 years old 1600-2200 calories 14-18 years old 2000-2400 calories 19-30 years old 2000-2400 calories • Don’t Consider Soda part of you daily water intake: Soda actually depletes nutrients in your body that are the most beneficial, the big one is calcium. Without calcium your teeth will rot, and the risk of sprains and breaks are increased due to lack of nutrients in your bones. To stay properly hydrated you should intake 2 cups of water prior to practice and plenty of water after practice (your urine should maintain a straw like-color). • Don’t Think skinny means healthy: What we do involves muscles, meaning nice toned bodies. You do not need to be stick skinny by any means to be an amazing athlete. If you are not taking in the proper amount of food to maintain your weight and muscle build, your body will actually start to get the nutrients from any source it can (your body will literally begin to eat your own muscles), meaning again weak muscles and a higher risk for injury. You will more likely get fatigued quicker, and be tired much more often. Make sure you are eating your daily amount of calories and carbohydrates. • Don’t Rely on sugar and fat filled school snacks to get you through the day: Now that most of you are back in school, it is very important to maintain a balanced nutritious diet. Just because they sell it in the cafeteria, or on the snack cart, does not mean it is good for you. Avoid cookies, chips, candy, sodas, sugary drinks, and high fat foods typically sold in schools. To make life a little bit more simple bring your own food from home. By simply brining small fruit and veggie snacks, and even low sugar power/protein bars you will be filling your body with healthy food instead of junk food. • Don’t Live on fast food: Fast food, Jamba Juice, and Coffee Drinks, are full of sugar, hidden fats, bad caffeine and much more that is not good for anyone, let alone any athlete. If fast food is your only option to eat, make

19

Page 28: Where Character is Built And Champions are Made · Team Practices: Starts June 17th Mandatory Choreography with ShowTyme -21 (tentative) OTHER IMPORTANT DATES June 17-20 Mandatory

sure you choose one that includes vegetables such as lettuce and tomatoes, and cut out mayonnaise based spreads and cheeses. Grilled chicken is a much better option than breaded or fried chicken, or high calorie, high fat burger patties. Even though Jamba Juice is made with real fruit, there is a large amount of sugar. To make a Jamba a bit healthier, chose the smaller size, and substitute the sugar-loaded sherberts with your favorite fruit or soy. Caffeine is a growing athlete’s worse enemy! Caffeine actually will give you a temporary amount of energy, then cause you to crash and become even more fatigued than you already were. If you need an energy boost, try a glass of 100% juice or get a quick protein fix by eating a string cheese or a piece of fruit- your body will thank you. DO: • Do Eat Breakfast: If your day begins with a healthy breakfast you are less likely to become fatigued. By implementing fruit and whole grains in your daily morning routine, you will have enough energy right up until the last minute of practice. Be sure to include juice and/ or fruit in your morning routine. Here are some great options for mornings when you are on the go:

• Whole grain breakfast cereal with non-fat milk and sliced bananas or fresh blue berries.

• Low fat yogurt mixed with granola.

• Instant oatmeal mixed with non-fat milk.

• Whole wheat toast/ bagel topped with crunchy peanut butter. • Do Chose fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables contain a limitless amount of good energy, nutrients, and vitamins. About 2 cups of fruit and 2 ½ cups of vegetables are needed daily. Decrease the amount of chips and junk snack foods by adding a piece of fruit or some crisp vegetables. Here are some great tips on how to implement fruits and veggies into your diet.

• Vegetables that are easy to carry and can be eaten quickly with little to no

• preparation are the best: celery, carrots, and cherry tomatoes.

• If vegetables are not your favorite, find a low-fat dressing to use as a dipping

• sauce.

• Low sodium V-8 juice provides a fast dose of your daily vegetables.

• Bananas, small oranges, apples, grapes, and strawberries are all very portable.

• You can even buy frozen fruit and make your own healthy smoothies at home. • Do Get plenty of Calcium: Even if you do not like milk, it does not mean that you have to all together cut calcium out of your diet. There are plenty of healthy ways to get calcium into your diet without drinking milk.

• Add fruit to low fat yogurt

• Use spinach leaves in your salad or on your sandwiches

• Drink calcium-fortified orange juice

• Look for breads or cereals that are calcium fortified It is very important to make sure that you have calcium in your diet. If you are lacking calcium your bones lose their density and in turn you are at a greater risk for a break or sprain. When choosing a type of milk, go for a non-fat, low fat, or soy milk; anything else contains high levels of saturated fats which we all know is not what we want in our bodies. • Do Eat a well-rounded dinner: A well rounded meal includes a fruit, veggie, whole grain, protein and dairy. Find different and fun ways to add fruits, and veggies into your meals. Using whole grain pasta, rice, and bread will give you much more fuel. Make sure you have a least one item from each food group in your dinner; it does not need to be a lot just a couple pieces will do the job. The healthy dinner you eat at night will turn into energy for the next day. • Do Read the ingredients: When looking for a healthy snack, make sure you know what is going into your body. If you cannot pronounce an ingredient with ease, it is probably not good for you. BEWARE of high fructose corn syrup, it is just bad sugar. Products that are made with natural ingredients are a much better

Page 29: Where Character is Built And Champions are Made · Team Practices: Starts June 17th Mandatory Choreography with ShowTyme -21 (tentative) OTHER IMPORTANT DATES June 17-20 Mandatory

choice By limiting or even eliminating sugar and fat loaded snacks, you will be allowing your body to produce the energy you need for every practice night. How to be competition ready! We spend a lot of time preparing for competition, from perfecting our routine at practice, to looking our best on the day of competition; a lot of work goes into competing, making it even more important to eat the right foods the night before, and day of a competition. • The Day Before: Stay Hydrated!! Drink plenty of water all day long, avoid soda and caffeinated beverages, and activities that will deplete your body of water (hot tubs, strenuous workouts). • The Night Before: Choose a dinner that is high in Carbs: Carbohydrates are stored in your body for a duration of time, allowing you to perform at your maximum potential. Eating enough carbs will keep you going throughout the entire competition. Foods that are a great source of carbohydrates:

• Wheat Pasta

• Brown Rice

• Whole Wheat Bread Be sure to add Protein: Meats and beans contain a great source of protein. Protein carries an adequate source of iron, which is very important in the diet of young females. Without an adequate amount of iron anemia can occur, which causes fainting, weakness, and fatigue. Foods that are a great source of protein and do not contain high levels of saturated fats:

• Skinless Chicken

• Fish

• Beans

• Legumes

• Nuts and Seeds

• Soy Products/ Tofu Don’t forget the fruits and veggies: It is very important to avoid acidic fruits and vegetable the night before a competition. When nerves set in, the acidity left over from the food turns into an upset stomach. Stick with lighter fruits and veggies such as:

• Corn on the Cob

• Green Beans

• Salad

• Baked potatoes

• Apples

• Pears

• Peaches

• Bananas

• Grapes

• Melons • The Morning Of: Having the right breakfast is very important: Use the list of suggestions above and know that your body will need to take time in order to digest the food that you are putting into it. It is best to allow your body 2 hours before competing in order to digest the food you have eaten. • The Snacks: Healthy snacking provides the calories and glucose your body needs to enhance performance. Snacks should be approximately 200 calories each. And timing is important; stop snacking half an hour before

Page 30: Where Character is Built And Champions are Made · Team Practices: Starts June 17th Mandatory Choreography with ShowTyme -21 (tentative) OTHER IMPORTANT DATES June 17-20 Mandatory

competing to enable your stomach to empty. Snacking every two to three hours throughout the day will replace the lunchtime meal while providing a regular fuel source for the body. Some great snack ideas:

• String cheese and an apple

• A cereal bar and low-fat milk

• Trail mix (dried fruit, nuts, cereal and pretzels)

• Apple and peanut butter

• Half a sandwich (meat, peanut butter and jelly, or cheese)

• Low-fat yogurt and fruit

• Bread sticks and cheese

• Bagel and peanut butter

• Frozen grapes or juice/ fruit such as watermelon

• Peanut butter and crackers

• Low-fat granola bars and fruit

• Low-fat pudding

• Ginger snap cookies or graham crackers

• Low-fat cottage cheese and canned fruit

• Low-fat granola and yogurt

• Veggies and low-fat dip Want to know more? Log on to www.mypyramid.gov. This site provides factual information pertaining to all your food needs. Also, with the My Pyramid tracker you can actually enter your daily food intake to determine how well you are meeting your nutrient requirements.
