For a detailed explanation, refer to the Adult Proof of Age Card Act 2008, Tow Truck Act 1973, Transport Operations (Marine Safety) Act 1994, Transport Operations (Passenger Transport) Act 1994 and Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1995.

Protection of PIN and shared secretsWhen you come into a licence issuing centre to apply for

your new card, you will be asked to provide a Personal

Identification Number (PIN) and answers to two shared

secrets, which will help you to protect and control access

to personal information on your card’s chip.

Your PIN and shared secrets will be stored on your card’s

chip. Your shared secrets and answers will also be encrypted

and stored securely by Transport and Main Roads.

Make sure you keep your information secure – only you

should know your PIN and shared secrets.

PINYour PIN will be a four-digit number known only to you.

When choosing your PIN, remember:

• DO NOT choose a PIN that is easily identified with you, for example, your date of birth, your telephone number or your driver licence number

• DO NOT choose a PIN that is a group of repeated numbers.

Safer. Stronger.Queensland licences, authorities and proof of age cards

are changing to reflect new technology. They will be more

reliable, more durable and more secure because, unlike

the current laminated cards, the new cards are extremely

difficult to duplicate.

The Queensland Government will roll out the following cards

in late 2010:

• Driver Licence

• Heavy Vehicle Driver Licence

• Adult Proof of Age Card

• Marine Licence Indicator

• Industry Authority (includes driver authorisations, dangerous goods driver licences, tow truck drivers and assistants, traffic controllers, driver/rider trainers and pilot and escort vehicle drivers).

These will replace existing laminated cards and marine

licence confirmation reports.

Digital photo and signatureYour digital photo and signature will be taken when you

apply for a card. Special software will measure your key

facial features and compare your photo with others held by

the Department of Transport and Main Roads. It is virtually

impossible for two people, including identical twins, to

share exactly the same facial characteristics. This will help

Transport and Main Roads determine whether the applicant

is already a cardholder and will help prevent people from

unlawfully obtaining multiple cards under different names.

A similar process is currently used for passport applications.

Your photo and signature will be securely stored by Transport

and Main Roads and displayed on the face of the card.

As is currently the case, most people will only need to have

a new digital photo and digitised signature taken every

10 years.

6

Shared secretsYou will be given a list of questions to choose from. You will

need to supply answers to two of the questions from the

list. These answers will be your shared secrets.

The answers to your shared secrets should be something

you will easily remember but others will have difficulty

knowing or finding out. They must be a minimum of four

letters and/or numbers.

How do I apply for a card? You will need to go to a licence issuing centre to apply for

a card, have your digital photo and signature taken, and

record your PIN and shared secrets.

How will I receive my card?Your card will be produced at a secure location and mailed

to you.

What do I use until my card arrives?Once your application for a driver licence, industry authority

or marine licence has been approved, you will receive

an interim document to show a Police Officer, Transport

Inspector or Shipping Inspector if required to do so. These

include:

• Driver Licence Receipt

• Marine Licence Indicator Receipt

• Interim Industry Authority.

Until you receive your new card by mail you will need to

use your interim document as proof you hold a licence or

industry authority.

If you applied for an Adult Proof of Age Card, you will be

given a confirmation slip which acts as proof you have

lodged an application. The confirmation slip cannot be

used as proof of age. You will receive your card in the mail

if your application is approved. If your application is not

approved, you will receive notification from Transport and

Main Roads.
