WHERE CAN I CAMP?
HOLIDAY PARKS AND CAMPGROUNDS
Holiday parks and camping grounds provide a wide range of accommodation options, from camping sites through to self-contained motels. They also provide kitchens, laundries, showers and powered sites. They are ideal for an extended stay.
SELF-CONTAINED CAMPING
If you have a certified fully self-contained vehicle (with a toilet, wastewater and rubbish facilities on-board) then there are some opportunities to camp overnight for free on land administered by the Clutha District Council. However, restrictions have been put in place to control the numbers of certified self-contained vehicles and the areas where they can park. This includes the following prohibited areas:• Town centres or residential areas• The foreshore area between Kaka Point and The
Nuggets• Any other public areas where ‘No Camping’ signs
are displayed. In addition, and as a trial over the 2019/20 season, freedom camping is restricted across The Catlins area, apart from a designated camping site in Owaka, located on Inn Street.
WHAT IS A CERTIFIED FULLY SELF-CONTAINED VEHICLE?
Certified fully self-contained means your vehicle meets New Zealand Standard 5464 with toilet, grey water and waste capacity for three days. A current self-contained warrant must be displayed in the window.
CAMPING PROTOCOL
Care for the environment and be careful about what you leave behind. Follow the advice at www.camping.org.nz. Keep at least 10m away from seals and sealions. Keep clear of penguins and their nests.

OTHER THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
FIRES
Fires are not permitted. Please use a camp cooker for all cooking unless you are in a licensed camping ground or holiday park with supplied facilities.
DISPOSE OF WASTE
Waste-holding tanks can be emptied at the dump station sites shown on the map. Rubbish bins can be found at most of the main settlements. Please use these facilities and help us care for the environment. If you cannot dispose of your waste thoughtfully, please take it with you until you find somewhere appropriate to leave it.
