WELCOME TO THE FUTURE – RIVERS CLUB REINVENTION...

Jack Kimbell, CCM, CHE, General Manager

So, let’s take a peek into our Rivers Club Crystal Ball to look into the future. Our Reinvention is right around the corner in 2016 and it is getting very exciting. What I thought would be fun is a side-by-side look at images from around the Club today and future rendering images (still to be finalized…) depicting the same areas made new. So let’s walk through…

Come walk with me into the e-lounge and touchdown rooms. Wait, step off the elevator first to a greeting from our Member Service Concierge. If you feel like you’ve been beamed up Scotty - it is tomorrows Club. To your left, out of the photo, are stylish chairs and low tables for waiting guests. Straight ahead - the new e-lounge with very vogueish scattered chairs and tables and a high-top communal table that seats eight for waiting guests, impromptu meetings and much more. Behind the glass walls and doors, there are five touchdown rooms. Each with a table and amazingly comfortable work chairs for four, a wall mounted LCD, white wall for brainstorming sessions, conference capable phone, Wi-Fi and each can be reserved for blocks of time. Even better – if you get hungry or thirsty, no problem, we can serve you and your guests. Oh, and each room will be themed to honor local places of interest (the Warhol, Duquesne Incline, etc.). Around the corner to the left is all new dining restrooms (& family restroom / brides room) and to the right is the all new large pre-function space for the beautifully renovated ballroom (I’m sure you can’t wait to see the selection boards…). Whoops, we are running out of room – let’s head on over to HEY JACK and take a look at more of the future…

FITNESS NEWS

Jessica HootmanAthletic Operations Director

Doug BaraniakFitness Manager

Beyond the TreadmillThe treadmill has a long-standing reputation and great popularity as an instrument for cardiovascular training and weight management. It is a relatively safe and weather-proof way to walk, jog, run, and enjoy interval training without being on the open road. Plus, think of all the calories you are burning! Yet how much of that weight loss is the unwanted and unhealthy loss of lean muscle tissue? The fact is, you really don’t know! Therefore, if you want to preserve strength and muscle while losing weight, it would be wise to look beyond the treadmill and learn the role nutrition and strength training play in a healthy weight-loss program.

Are you getting enough protein in your diet? This question deserves attention if your goal is to maintain muscle and increase your metabolism while losing fat. The best way to achieve this is by tracking the quantity of protein in your diet. The current recommendation calls for approximately 0.7 grams of protein per day for each pound of body weight for an active adult. A male weighing 170 pounds is advised to consume about 120 grams of protein each day. A female weighing 130 pounds is advised to consume about 90 grams of protein per day. A diet that features protein from a variety of sources is ideal, such as meat, fish, cheese, tofu, beans, lentils, yogurt, nuts, and seeds.

So how does strength training fit in? If your goal is fat loss without losing muscle, it is important for you to maintain current levels of strength. To achieve this you must continue to train with sufficient intensity. Without this intensity, the body receives the signal that it does not need to maintain current levels of strength. Without the signal to maintain strength, the body is not encouraged to maintain muscle. Muscle defines your shape and is your source of strength, and is also highly metabolic and capable of burning hundreds of calories per day, even at rest. This should be enough reason for you to work it, build it, and nourish it!

So now what? If you would like us to share training tips or assist you in meeting your fitness goals, please contact any of our Personal Trainers. We will do all we can to help you to Focus on Fitness. – by Michael Senerius (full article can be viewed on Athletic level.)

Massage as a necessity, not a luxuryIt’s time to stop thinking of massage as a luxurious indulgence, but rather as a research-backed tool that can improve your health. Let’s first discuss the benefits of massage in hopes to change the stereotype. Massage is a way to maintain good health and is not just reserved for athletes or for those in rehabilitation. Everyone can benefit from massage. Research shows that massage therapy is a valuable component of a well-rounded healthcare regimen, combating everything from chronic pain to negative effects of stress. It can also:

1. Reduce lower back pain2. Help you sleep better3. Decreases stress, depression and anxiety4. Improve joint mobility/circulation5. Reduce inflammation 6. Aid in Recovery from your regular

workouts

Admittedly, massage therapy has a monetary cost, but that should be weighed against the benefits. There is usually a way to budget for a monthly massage with a bit of reprioritizing or taking advantage of specials being offered. In reality, massage therapy is an integral component of an overall health maintenance plan. We recommend that you schedule weekly, bi-weekly or monthly massages. Keeping the muscles pliable and stress free will undoubtedly aid in preventing postural problems that often result in neck pain, low back pain, headaches and an overall feeling of tightness. – by Tricia Petras

Massage Specials: Warm Me Up! – Schedule a 60 or 90-minute Hot Stone massage and receive a FREE oil upgrade. Choose from pumpkin or a blend of cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg.

HEY JACK – BACK TO THE FUTURE...

Jack Kimbell, CCM, CHE, General Manager

I often get the same questions from Members. To provide answers for the benefit of everyone, I will answer questions asked & ideas submitted here with straightforward answers (without names) on Club issues. Thanks for asking… Jack Kimbell

P.S. This time it is all my doing as I take you further on our tour back to the future…

We’ve stepped back into the future from the e-Lounge into the “Hearth” lounge - so named for the days and nights over two hundred years ago on site at Fort Pitt at the Point Brewery Malt house where folks gathered around the pub to meet with a pint. The Hearth lounge features a centrally located bar with a panoramic view of Mt. Washington and the Monongahela River, a Communal “Ember” Table for ten w/plug-ins and iPads, plus room for lots more folks at banquettes and casual chic chairs and tables.

This is the everyday “go-to” place in the Club. The morning coffee stop to watch the news and plan your day. The place to schedule informal meetings: for breakfast, lunch, coffee, or a cocktail (with the ClubTable and menu available for breakfast and lunch). Or, the place for a casual dinner with exceptional food & service and great drinks (10+ wines by the glass and 6 draft beers, with an occasional local homebrew for charity). Plus, there are games and a 110” Plasma TV media center and other LCD TVs all around for all news and sporting events. The décor is trendy and classy with a ceiling system and lower bar that glows at night and strong vibrant fabric colors. Plus, there is a glass walled wine tasting room in the far corner adding a touch of style. This is the spot to host a quick lunch, work remotely from the office, celebrate with friends and family, connect with colleagues, or just play games, refresh and recharge...

HEY JACK – Where are we now? Easy enough – we are in the left side of the old Main Dining Room…

HEY JACK – Where are we now? We are in the “Hearth” Anytime Lounge at dusk in July 2016…

HEY JACK – BACK TO THE FUTURE...

Last stop on our tour today – we are now in the “Foundry” Dining Room looking towards the Hearth Lounge (with our backs to the private dining hallway). The room is so named to pay tribute to Pittsburgh’s historic past of the coal, iron and steel industry that made our city great. The Foundry features four glass wine walls separated by beautiful illustrations of three scenes from foundries. This is “the” place for an elevated dining experience for lunch or dinner. At lunch it is à la carte menu with fresh local ingredients. At dinner, it is a la carte upscale grille dining at its best with nightly tableside items also available. In addition, we offer a weekly themed Chef’s table nightly that is limited to 6-8-eight people only (so RSVP in advance to get your spot). The Foundry also features live Jazz Nights every Wednesday and is separated from the Hearth Lounge by a centrally located pocket wall with pull out glass dividers.

This is the place to Celebrate milestones w/friends and family. Or, it’s where to come to entertain clients in a truly elegant atmosphere. Both the Hearth and Foundry are the perfect dining compliment before the theatre. Oh, and just around the corner are the newly reinvented and refurbished Private Dining Rooms. The Smithfield room now features a board room table with seating for 14 in incredibly comfortable board room chairs, complete with plug-ins for computers, iPads, etc.). The Grant and Fort Duquesne Rooms have all new looks as well. And don’t get me started on the club elevator and athletic lobbies, more to come on them later…

HEY JACK – Where are we? We are in the “Foundry” Dining Room in the evening in July 2016…

HEY JACK – Where are we? Now we are the right side of the old Main Dining Room…
