Dear Hartley Families,

A hearty congratulations to our Adult Volunteer of the Year, Mrs. Tracy Rowland, who was recognized this past Thursday at the District’s Volunteer of the Year Banquet held on the FCTC campus. Mrs. Rowland is a regular fixture at Hartley who helps students and teachers in too many ways to mention throughout the year. At the time of her recommendation in February, Tracy had already put in over 175 hours during 110 visits to Hartley. Because she has volunteered at every grade level in every capacity over so many years, the number of students and teachers she has supported and the impact she has had on our school’s improvement are immeasurable. And for our Adult Volunteer of the Year, Tera (Te-Te) Hunt, a big woohoo, yippee-yay-ay, chika chika boom boom, high five! Tera was chosen as the Senior Volunteer for the entire District and was also honored on Thursday night for her service to Hartley and our District. Mrs. Hunt has volunteered here for four years and has logged over 225 volunteer hours just in the last 18 months! She has helped many teachers and many students in a myriad of ways and has grown to be a highly valued permanent fixture here. From helping with health screenings, Kids’ Closet, classroom support, working with struggling students and even arranging to find a baby pig for Ms. Taylor to kiss, the loving care Tera brings to our students, staff and school has been a real blessing. As school volunteers, you can see that Mrs. Rowland and Mrs. Hunt truly set the bar. As a result of their tireless energy and the gift of their giving spirits, our school is a better place, and, for that, we are truly grateful!

ESSAY CONTEST SCHOLARSHIP

Here is your chance for your child to attend the SPARS Youth Sailing Summer Camp

for FREE. Included in your 300-500 word essay:

*What do you hope to learn at sailing camp?

Standardized Tests

True or false: standardized tests are tough. The answer depends on how prepared your youngsters are. Here are four ways to help him handle test week:

1. Explain that the test will show how much he has learned. Encourage him to try his best, but don’t put so much emphasis on them that he feels stressed.

2. Practice the test format. For example, your child might have to read a paragaph and answer questions. Using one of his textbooks, have him look at the questions at the end of a section first and then read the passage. That will help him know what to read for and how to find the answers.

3. Limit activities the night before tests. You may want to avoid having guests for dinner or skip his brother’s baseball game if it means being out late. Be sure your child gets to bed on time and sets an alarm for the next morning.

On the day, give him an energy-boosting breakfast. Try to include both protein(eggs, yogurt, milk) and

With cold and flu season being in full swing, please encourage your children to wash their hands often with soap and water or hand sanitizer. If your child becomes ill, please do not send him/her to school until he/she has been fever free for 24 hours without the aid of Tylenol or Advil-type products. Together we can keep Hartley healthy! Also, continue to check your child/children for head lice.

FASTT Math Program:

Knowing basic math facts is a key to

success in higher-level mathematics. As part

of our math program, your student is using

software called FASTT Math Next

Generation to help learn and use basic math

facts. This program was purchased for

three (3) years by the school using funds

from the Booster-thon. Students will have

access to the program at all times even

during the summer months.

Each student works on his or her own

learning path. The program determines

which facts a student cannot answer

correctly in less than one second and

provides instruction in only those facts.

Once a student can answer a fact correctly

in about one second, he or she practices to

get faster.

A special thanks goes out to Verde Go Nursery for their donation to Mrs. Santana's class of a tree to plant outside their classroom. Mrs. Santana's class is learning about the importance of planting trees to help our environment, and they will care for the tree and monitor its growth during the remainder of the year.

Thank you Verde Go Nursery!

Regarding Hardship Waiver Process We hope that this letter finds you and your child(ren) enjoying a successful school year. The purpose of this letter is to provide updated and new information regarding the Hardship out of Zone Waiver process. If you already have at least one child on an approved 2015-16 Out of Zone Hardship Transfer waiver, or, if you feel you have a hardship that would prevent your child from achieving success at their zoned school, the following process applies. If you have a child on an approved 2015-16 Out of Zone Hardship, this waiver will expire at the end of this school year. At that time, your child will be reassigned to your zoned school for the 2016-17 school year. If you would like your child to remain at the out of zone school he/she is currently attending, you must apply for an Out of Zone Hardship waiver again. The request may only be approved if your reason meets the criteria for a hardship. Rising twelfth grade students in Aberdeen who are already enrolled at Creekside High, may again remain, if they submit an Out of Zone Hardship Transfer Application. Additionally, rising sixth graders who are presently enrolled in “Crookshank-at-Sebastian” may remain at Sebastian, if they submit an Out of Zone Hardship Transfer Application. Transportation is NOT provided for these exceptions. A student may be granted an Out of Zone Hardship transfer when a condition or situation exists that implies an adverse or compelling circumstance, or a state of misfortune unique to that student’s life or a family’s life situation. In this case, you must complete a Hardship Out of Zone Application, and submit it for approval to School Services. The transfer request process will begin on February 12, 2016. You will have until April 30, 2016 to submit your request. The sooner your application is received, the sooner your child’s class schedule for next school year may be completed. If applicable to your reason for request, please be sure to mention that you are applying for the “grandfathered” condition for your fifth, eighth, or twelfth grade child when completing the Out of Zone Application. Your prompt attention to submitting an application will assist your school in preparing to meet requirements for state and federal funding, class size compliance, and other governmental and administrative applications. The application is available in both an electronic version (available February 12th on our website) and a paper version. Both applications and the directions for the process can be found on our district website at: http://www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/depts/os/schoolserv/transfers. Additionally, please note that transportation will not be provided to students who receive an approved out of zone waiver.
