Comanche Vesper – The Story of EstherBy Coco C

The Comanche Tribe presented the story of Esther to the camp on Sunday evening. The story was about the empowerment of women and putting God and others before oneself. The uplifting vesper was dedicated to all the strong, powerful women of Waldemar, but in particular, two ladies who have been with Waldemar for 60 summers: Jill and Joyce. Following the vesper was a tribute slideshow to these two ladies. Overall, it was a wonderful way to relay an encouraging message to campers as well as to show our appreciation for Jill and Joyce!

Hilltopper SundayBy Jordan M

Last Sunday's church was truly a heartwarming service for everyone gathered in Tejas Chapel. It was a special one because it was the last Sunday for Hilltoppers to experience as campers. Two Hilltoppers from each tribe spoke about the wonderful things Waldemar has blessed them with including friends, skills, and great memories. Athalie S and Audrey H spoke for the Aztecs, Sophie R and Kate S for the Comanches, and Grace Y and Claire M for the Tejas. Each speech was unique by each Hilltopper's experience but the message was the same: Waldemar changes lives for the better. In addition, the junior chorus and guitar class performed and the Hilltoppers sang the lovely tune "Shades of Evening." Marsha closed the service with "Bless This Camp." Overall, it was a wonderful service to commemorate both the Hilltoppers and this little piece of Heaven on the Guadalupe.

Zuma, Big Ben, and Big Blue hurried to the basketball court. They were dressed up as princesses for carnival. It was such an exciting night for campers! They said the blessing and shuffled in so they could dine on delicious hot dogs, chips, soda, cotton candy, snow cones, and popcorn. Once everyone had eaten, GA came over to the microphone and said in a lovely British accent, “Ladies and gentlemen, we will now announce the Queenie Fourteenie of Twenty-Seven-teenie! The three ladies in waiting are Zuma, Big Ben and Big Blue and Queenie is Seve the Catfish!” Everyone cheered and smi led as Seve opened the carnival.

Jr. Int. Drama By Ruthie G and Reagan M

In Junior and Intermediate drama, our youngest campers experienced the thrill of being on stage. In this class, there was often singing, dancing, and making friends. This year, the drama production was an exciting mashup of 5 different musicals! This included The Music Man, The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, Ariel, and Annie. The night was filled with singing, dancing and many laughs. Overall, the juniors and intermediate showcased many talents and it was a treat to watch!

Charming Tea Party By Charm Teacher, Sarah Jane M

Tuesday afternoon during Siesta, the charm classes and their guests met in the Dining Hall for a fabulous tea party. The wonderful wait staff had prepared lemon squares, snicker doodle cookies, and caramel squares for lovely tasty treats as well as an assortment of berries. We quenched our thirst with some traditional chamomile tea and Linda’s wonderful berry punch recipe. We sat down with our guests and conversed waiting patiently for our turns for refreshments. Star guests included Marsha, GA and Elizabet wearing darling tea attire! We’re very thankful for our wait staff here at Waldemar. It wouldn’t have been a success without them!

This past tribal hill marked an ending in many ways. It signified the end of first term 2017, but for some, it meant that this tribal hill would be the ending of their last days as a camper. This hill was unique to say the least, with parents accompanying their daughters, the knowledge of a newly named Ideal Waldemar Girl, and the fact that this hill was on a Friday evening instead of the usual Thursday service.

As the girls and their families made their way up the rocky path directly to upper hill, Leader Mary Bass M greeted them for the last time. The hill opened with the Hilltoppers of 2017 and their series of farewells. Katelynn C spoke first, followed by Athalie S, Georgia F, Fatima M, and Eleanor A. The officers of this term then returned their badges of office, the bibs and the bracelets, and said their own goodbyes. Speakers Annie W, Hadley M, C.C. H, and Cleo N then talked about memories and of being a Waldemar girl. The Aztecs then lit fires in honor of this year’s IWG and the Hilltoppers saying their final goodbyes, as Ivy B, Tru R, and Libby R spoke about these two. Soon after, the fourth and final set of awards was handed out. Zuma also received their War Canoe charms. Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for – it was time to announce the Best All Around. After much cheering and clapping for this honored girl, everyone finally sat down to bow their heads for a closing prayer. The prayer led by Evie S, was a wonderful end to this hill and overall to this term.

First Tribal Hill - First TermAn air of difference settled over the

final tribal hill of the term and for our beloved Hilltoppers, the final tribal hill that they would spend as campers. Not only this, but guests also accompanied us: some family members were invited to join us on this monumental climb. Our Activities Chairman, Rachel S, invited the new, larger family to lower hill followed by the handing out of the sunshine and friendship awards by Head Cheerleader, Carly F.

After this, we climbed once again to upper hill, where our leader, Kate S, gave her final welcome to her sisters. She then lit a torch along with Rubyanne R, Bella M, and Carly F to commemorate the past memorable term and the efforts of our Ideal Waldemar Girl. After, Kate S, Kaitlin G, Rachel S, Rubyanne R, Bella M, Carly F and Sophie R spoke about the impacts of memories and the complicated dimension know as time, and then our devoted sponsors expressed their undying love for the Comanches in an effort to inspire us for Second Field Day. Leader Kate S then gave out the weekly awards. The sponsors handed out medals to our hardworking war canoers, and then oversaw the tribal officers as they returned their bibs and bracelets reflecting on the time they spent serving our tribe. Finally, the sponsors announced our prestigious Best All Around.

We ended our hill with Squish’s Prayer, our tribal song and Taps. While for some this was their last climb as campers, they knew deep in their hearts that they would come back some day.

On Friday, June 27th, the Tejas held their final tribal hill of this 2017 1st Term. As the Tejas gathered on their lower hill, Georgia S gave the opening prayer thanking God for an amazing term and for the chance to gather on our hill. Following this, Virginia F listed the activities that will be going on Field Day and friendship awards were handed out. Lower hill ended with a prayer read by Katie B about the memories we have had here and thanking God for them.

Opening upper hill was Maryrose R with a prayer thanking God for the friendships and the fun we have at camp. Next the fires were lit by Rachel H with the fire of loyalty, Katherine C with the fire of sportsmanship and last Mary Louise B with the fire of friendship. Soon after this Sophie W and Ava L recited a poem about how we are so blessed to be in such an amazing place and now leaving this place, we will be filled with sadness and sorrow. Following this our former sponsor Laura G spoke to the Tejas tribe about how we must stick together through victory and loss. After this, war canoe charms were passed out to Big Blue. Then, officer bibs and bracelets were returned and the Tejas Leader and sponsors spoke to the tribe. Next, I, Tejas Scribe, read the Will for the Tejas of 2nd Term 2017. Then awards were given out and we announced the Tejas Best All Around.

Next all of the Hilltoppers got up and recited a poem about Camp Waldemar. Elly O closed the hill with a prayer asking that everyone stay safe and do their best on Field Day.

Audrey H is selected 2017 First Term Ideal Waldemar Girl

Every term, Waldemar presents a graduat ing camper with the highest award in camp, the Ideal Waldemar Girl. This ideal girl is chosen by her outstanding leadership qualities, positive attitude and great personality. She always promotes the Waldemar ideals: thoughtfulness, health, friendship, service, loyalty, sportsmanship, courage, leadership, beauty, and reverence.

Waldemar has been honoring girls with this award since 1933. This is one of the many traditions here at Waldemar that has been carried out for over eight decades. It was first started when the Comanche tribe proposed to honor a girl who is highly admired and appreciated. She is voted on by the counselor staff. It has now become traditional to announce this young lady at the end of a ceremony given by the hilltoppers.

Senior Drama Presents Legally Blonde!

By Elizabeth S

This year, Senior drama presented the musical "Legally Blonde" for their 2017 production. While the play is based on the popular movie, the musical is just as wonderful! Some of the favorite performances from the night included "Bend and Snap," "Oh My Gosh You Guys," and "Whipped into Shape." Sarah H who played the defendant and exercise mogul Brooke Windham in the play, stated that "it is certainly evident that Waldemar girls possess a talent for the theatre and senior drama helps them shine." The night was fantastic and camp enjoyed witnessing the message of determination, confidence, and empowerment for young leading ladies!

My Hilltopper YearBy Hilltopper, Katelynn C

Your Hilltopper year is the most fun of all, but at the same time, very challenging! To me, this means you have to be responsible and manage your time to get the tasks given to you completed. Waldemar expects a lot out of its campers and especially the Hilltoppers. You may think you could get 104 decorations done two days before the special occasion, but that is not possible because there has to be a lot of thought given into each spirit tag. We put so much into everything we do! Being the oldest girls in camp is a lot easier than it seems. Some things you must remember are always to be positive knowing you have tasks due and most importantly, have fun

doing whatever you are doing. The reason for being positive is because you need to prove to your camp sisters and counselors you can be strong and set a nice example for all other younger campers in camp.

Camp Waldemar is truly the most amazing summer camp! Whether you are a Hilltopper or not, make the best of every day. Cherish all the funny, sweet and growing moments. Nothing will be the same once you leave the Waldemar gates for the last time. As my time as a camper is coming to a close, I want every one of you girls to believe in yourself and enjoy every moment at Camp Waldemar!

The prime objective of the Waldemar War Whoop© is to inform, to entertain, and to serve as a permanent history of the events at Camp Waldemar.

The Adventures of GumboBy Christina W

Gumbo didn’t know what was going on. All she knew was that she was forced to stand next to someone she didn’t recognize at the top of some stairs and a lot of people were looking at her. Someone shouted from the bottom and suddenly she was being handed off to someone else! This new person, however, had treats! She held it in front of Gumbo’s nose as they ran behind a wall, away from some bright lights. They finally stopped, and the lady fed a confused Gumbo a few treats while telling her that she was a good girl. All Gumbo could think was “where’s Katie?” So when the girl’s grip loosened, Gumbo bolted away. “No!” the girl shouted after her. Gumbo ran past the pool and she could hear everyone yelling. She ran to where the people were sitting. Finally, she found Katie sitting next to her other owner Seve and she jumped on them. They laughed, stood up and called her away from the sounds, and Gumbo happily followed her home.
