In addition, all CNHS athletic facilities – and facilities across Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. and schools across the state – are closed through June 30, according to an announcement on April 28 from the Indiana Department of Education. This means that workouts and various contests that typically occur in June for various sports in preparation for the 2020-21 school year will not occur. It also means that youth camps typically offered during June will not occur. Facilities previously had been closed through May. It is uncertain at this time whether team workouts, summer contests and youth camps are being postponed to new dates in July or if they are canceled entirely.

VIRTUAL WORKOUTS BECOME PART OF ROUTINE Columbus North athletes in all sports still striving to improve during COVID-19 pandemic

Individual workouts, online workouts and e-training.

In a phrase, that has been the way that Columbus North athletes – and athletes all across the nation – have pursued their sports of choice in the spring of 2020.

The spring sports of baseball, softball, boys’ golf, girls’ tennis, track & field and unified track all lost an entire season of competition. And other sports, typically in a training or travel-team mode during March, April and May, have lost those opportunities, too.

Virtual workouts – both offered individually through various online instructors and with various CNHS sports teams holding online team gatherings – are what have been available. The learning platform may be different, but Columbus North

athletes in nearly all sports are using this time to get better at what they do.

Jacob Gilliam, a junior on the CNHS boys’ soccer team, explained his individual workout routine.

“Over this quarantine, I’ve been lifting weights in my basement, running on the treadmill or outside and trying to stay active,” he said. “I also go outside to get touches on the (soccer) ball. I shoot, juggle and do different drills.”

Similarly, Columbus North girls’ soccer players have held online workouts and meetings. In one online meeting, former Bull Dogs’ standout Morgan Proffitt spoke to current players about what it takes to play in college.

“Morgan talked about things that motivated her throughout her career, things that she focused on to take her to that next level,” CN coach David

Young told The Republic. “We did a survey a couple of months ago, and a lot of our girls indicated they wanted to play at the next level. So I thought we would bring Morgan in and let her talk about what it takes to get there.”

Boys cross country coach Danny Fisher has communicated regularly with athletes on his team. A recent lesson involved athletes holding themselves to standards.

“We have focused on developing leadership skills and the ability to do things on your own,” Fisher said. “The expectation of championship character is created by the habit of stacking good decisions on top of good decisions. How we do things is just as important as what we do.”

Again, the platform may be different, but Bull Dogs in all sports are working hard to progress.

FACILITIES, EVENTS SHUT DOWN IN JUNE

All sports events, workouts and camps have been shut down for June 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Columbus North senior Jackson Payne announced that he has committed to Hanover College to continue his academic

and athletic career.Payne, a 6-0, 200-pound linebacker, plans to play

football for the Panthers. Hanover went 9-2 overall, won the HCAC championship at 7-0 and qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs last fall. The Panthers are coached by Matt Theobald, who enters his fifth season as the team’s head coach in 2020.

“I liked the coaching staff, the scheme of their football team and the business program,” Payne said as his reasons for choosing Hanover. “I also liked how the scenery around campus is beautiful.”

Payne, who is projected as an outside linebacker, talked with Theobald and defensive coordinator Aarik Gault as he evaluated the factors to make his college decision. He also considered Wabash College.

“Coach Gault was my recruiting coordinator, and I have built a good relationship with him,” Payne said. “In addition to the football opportunity itself, I liked that they have a new weight room in place and other new facilities are coming soon, including new turf on the field.”

As a senior at Columbus North, Payne totaled 24 solo tackles, 13 assisted tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack and one pass broken up in a partial season because of injuries. As a junior, Payne

was selected honorable mention all-Conference Indiana after he tallied 50 solos, 25 assists, two TFLs, two sacks, one quarterback pressure, two PBUs, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He also was credited with a safety in a 9-7 victory over Roncalli as a junior.

Payne is the third sibling in his family to pursue college football. Twin brothers Tanner and Tucker Payne, 2017 Columbus North graduates, each has played in college after playing for the Bull Dogs. Tanner is entering his fourth season as a defensive lineman at Rose-Hulman. Tucker played one season as a defensive back at Wabash, and he is entering his senior year as a student there.

“My brothers have had a huge influence on me,” Jackson Payne said. “Seeing all the hard work they put in during high school and going to college has inspired me to do the same. As for my decision, they said I couldn’t make a wrong choice with the schools

I had it narrowed down to. They told me that I should trust my gut.”

Payne, who is looking at marketing or business management as a possible career, is the fourth football player in the CNHS Class of 2020 to announce plans to play in college. He joins Mitchel Collier (Central Michigan), Jackson Davis (Butler University) and Landon Robbins (Valparaiso University) striving to play at the next level.

ON THE CHASE: Columbus North’s Jackson Payne (33) combines with Nick Holt (right) to pressure Terre Haute North quarterback Matt Gauer (2) during the Bull Dogs’ 21-3 victory on Sept. 27, 2019.

Columbus North senior Sydney Sluys announced she will continue her athletic and academic career at Manchester

University, an NCAA Division III program located in North Manchester, Ind.

A competitor in track and cross country, Sluys plans to major in exercise science with hopes for an eventual career in athletic training or physical therapy.

Earlier this spring, Sluys competed in the Bloomington North Indoor Invitational and posted a time of 6 minutes, 37.98 seconds in the 1,600-meter run. Last fall during the cross country season, she had a season-best time of 23:14.0 for 5,000 meters in the Columbus North Classic on the course at CeraLand Park.

“One of my college running goals is to be able to balance my role was student with my role as an athlete,” said Sluys, who also considered Indiana State and Evansville as possible college choices. “I also want to break 23 minutes in the 5K. And I hope to make new friendships that will last a lifetime while on the team.”

Columbus North coach Rick Sluder is pleased that Sluys will have the opportunity to run for the Spartans, who compete in the Heartland Collegiate

Athletic Conference.“Sydney has been the

model of consistency and effort that we hope all Columbus North distance runners strive to achieve,” Sluder said. “She will fit in very well at Manchester and get the opportunity to continue to improve and contribute as a student-athlete. With Sydney’s work ethic and love for running, she will be a great four-year athlete for them.”

Sluys noted that she visited the school last December to learn about its academic and athletic programs. She liked how the school offers a number of options for academic help and professional development. Sluys pondered her options throughout the winter, and she committed to the Spartans in a March 30 phone call with coach Brian Cashdollar.

“Out of the colleges I applied for, I connected with

the program at Manchester the most,” Sluys said.At Manchester, Sluys will join a women’s cross

country program that has won the past two and four of the past five HCAC championships. In women’s track, the Spartans claimed the HCAC indoor title in 2016 and HCAC outdoor crowns in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

STRIDING OUT: Columbus North senior Sydney Sluys competes during a cross country meet last fall at Eagle Park in Brown County. Sluys posted a season best of 23:14.0 for 5,000 meters.

Columbus North tennis coach Kendal Hammel has been named Midwest Division Indiana

Pro of the Year as part of a group of awards announced by the United States Professional Tennis Association.

Hammel is to receive his award during the ATP Western and Southern Open in August in Mason, Ohio. His selection makes him eligible for the Midwest Division Pro of the Year against four other state winners. The Midwest Division is a five-state region that includes Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.

“I’m very honored,” Hammel told The Republic. “There are a lot of great teaching pros in the state of Indiana. I put a lot of time into my tennis out on the court and off the court – not only in my club but at the high school level as well. It’s definitely not your typical 9-to-5 job. It’s always something interesting.

“I’m appreciative, too, for all the boys and girls and adults whom I’ve worked with over the years. It’s always nice to see them succeed in tennis, too.”

This is the second major award that Hammel has received this year. In January, he was named Indiana boys tennis Coach of the Year for the 2018-19 school year by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

The USPTA award is for Hammel’s work as a teaching pro at the Tipton Lakes Athletic Club, where he works in addition to his role as a Columbus North coach. Hammel, a graduate of Huntington North High School and Anderson University, also received the USTPA Indiana award in 2010. In addition, he was named a winner of the Jack Cramer Award by the Columbus Parks & Recreation Department in 2016. He also has served as the director for the USTA Midwest Championship each July for more than 20 years.

“Kendal always is energetic and good with all people he teaches,” TLAC general manager Mary Beth Wilson told the newspaper. “He teaches from 4-year-olds to 74-year-olds, and he

does a fantastic job with every age group that he teaches. He’s one of the hardest workers that I know and a fantastic tennis teacher as well.”

Hammel, 63, has been the Columbus North boys tennis coach since the 1995-96 school year, and he has been the Bull Dogs’ girls tennis coach since the 1996-97 school year. He also coached boys tennis for two seasons at Bloomington North prior to moving to Columbus.

As a high school boys coach, Hammel’s team are 387-150 in dual matches, not including the two seasons at Bloomington North. In 25 seasons with the CNHS boys, his teams have won five Conference Indiana championships, 22 sectional trophies, 11 regional titles, and four semi-state crowns. The Bull Dog boys have reached the boys State Finals four times, placing fourth in 2007, third in 2008, fifth in 2018 and third in 2019.

His Columbus North girls’ teams are

377-166 in dual matches with one South Central Conference title, seven CI crowns, 21 sectional trophies, 14 regional titles and three semi-state crowns. They have competed in the girls State finals three times, finishing second in 2010, fifth in 2016 and fifth in 2019. This is Hammel’s 24th season with the CNHS girls, but all spring 2020 matches were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overall, Hammel’s teams have posted 764 dual-match victories at Columbus North, and he shows no indication of slowing down.

“It just depends on health and all that kind of stuff,” he said. “I enjoy being at the club, all the clinics and all levels of play with the adults, the junior kids and the high school level. I still like doing the big tennis tournaments and things like that. I’ve had a lot of friendships and a lot of great memories throughout the years of parents, kids and families. But I’m not done yet.”
