When Chennai went down under … and was lifted up!
and waslifted up!It had been the wettest November for Chennai
in a century and no sooner had the citizens
heaved a sigh of relief the city was again lashed
by 270 mm of rain during a 12-hour period
on December 1st, 2015. The massive flooding
drove thousands from their homes, forced
industries and factories both large and small
to shut, retail and commercial establishments
had to either down shutters or contend with
the surging waters. Chennai was rendered
powerless, without any kind of connectivity and
cut off from the rest of the country as the airport
was shutdown, rail tracks were under several feet
of water and highways leading to and from the city
damaged. Life came to a grinding halt!
In these moments of high strife, as the civic
authorities struggled to come to terms with
the magnitude of the disaster, the people of
Chennai rose displaying fortitude, resilience and
brotherhood to help one another.
In this section, we pay tribute to our wonderful
colleagues from across the globe who took
it upon themselves to lend a helping hand.
We salute all those who braved the waters to
contribute towards getting our submerged
campus operational once again and finally
we acknowledge some of our colleagues
who have chosen to share their experiences
with us.
L&T ECC Emirates
Recreation Club in
collaboration with
RAAC, Coimbatore
(NGO) reached out to
the flood victims of
Tamil Nadu. Within a
span of 3 days, the team organized 12 large cartons
of blankets, biscuits, toothpaste, tooth brushes,
sanitary napkins and other utility items.
Team SSRP (Solapur-Sangareddy Road project) was
involved in the relief operations at Killai village in
Cuddolore district which was one of the worst hit
areas. The team donated 1.57 L for this cause and
distributed essential material to about 140 families.

Chennai by helping to drain out more than 3 feet of
rain water by engaging two 70 HP pumps for more
than 40 hours, much to the relief of 2000 families
residing in the area.
The CSR arm of L&T Construction swiftly responded
to the need for health care by organizing 10
mega medical and sanitation camps across the city

covering areas like Thiruvottiyur, Otteri, Waltax Road,
Pulianthope, New Washermanpet, Kannigapuram,
Korrukupet and Kotturpuram. These camps were
organized in association with HelpAge India and
a voluntary organization working pan-India. The
mobile van also carried purified drinking water
for people, medicines and chlorine tablets and
bleaching powder for sanitizing and disinfecting the
villages. 2519 people benefitted from these camps.

THE day afTEr....270 mm of rain in a 12-hour period is more than
enough to flood most cities and as Chennai
reeling under this onslaught, the waters let
out from a neighboring lake submerged our
campus under several feet of water. During this
period, some of our own employees braved the
surging waters to either rescue some of their
marooned counterparts or frantically move
costly equipment and articles of value to safer
and higher places. The water started to recede
only after 2 days and then Project Manapakkam
Campus Restoration began in right earnest with
Mr. S. Kanappan, Mr. B. Ramakrishnan, Mr.
S.V. Desai, Mr. V.S. Raju and Mr. S. Sunmugam
taking the lead. It is thanks to their herculean
efforts that we were able to resume operations
as quickly as we did. Hats off to them and the
many who worked day and night.

It is Tuesday 1st December 2015. It
has been raining for some days now
and there is no sign of the rains
slowing down. The weather seems
to be unusually rough and giving
everyone a sense of looming disaster.
It is evening and all hell breaks loose
from the sky. The rain gods have never
been so cruel. By the time I reach my
apartment the roads are flooded.
Clouds are pouring their hearts out.
The residents have already calculated
that a big disaster is on the way.
A very dark night. We hear noises from
everywhere. There is no electricity.
The power cut instills more fear in us.
‘Where do I go? What do I do???’. I
look for my mobile. It is also silent. I
think the rain has also taken a toll on
the network. I can’t go anywhere and
I can’t talk to anyone except walking
up to my stranger neighbor to share
my concerns. People in distress
get united. No bar of caste, creed,
regionalism and, most importantly,
language. All of a sudden each one
understands each other. Emotions
cross all boundaries. We develop so
much affinity amongst us, such as
never seen before. No festival, no
function and no cricket match have
ever brought us so close.
Later in the night, the beeps of
various cars start emanating from car
parking area. The rains are lashing
down on doors, balconies and roof
tops - mercilessly. It sends a chill down
the spine. There is an eerie sense
that something untoward is going
to happen. The beep sounds (alarms
!!!) finally get choked indicating that
the batteries have given up. It was a
real horror show. Residents are seen
on balconies.
The dawn brings more disaster. Nature
is at its fiercest. I look down from my
balcony. Water, water everywhere.
There is hustle bustle and noise on
the staircases: people are rushing
upstairs with their valuables and
necessary items holding the hands
of little children. Children seem to be
lost; not understanding: “Why this
kolaveri?” They have been freshly
woken up from their sleep (against
their wishes). Some of them are still
sleepy and calmly perched on the
laps and shoulders of their mothers.
Now the water has risen to the first
floor and is gradually rising further.
Oh God!! It has entered into the first
floor. The muddy waters are entering
the bedrooms now.
A morning has never been so scary.
The rains take a commercial break
and I see people rushing on to the
roof tops. I see new faces - never
seen before and get introduced to
wonderful human beings. We strike
a conversation. I find them happy -
everyone is happy to find themselves
alive. This is the time I realize that
we are blessed to be breathing and
walking.
With every spell of rain, the panic
soars as water rises. People staying
on the second floor plan to shift to
higher floors. I can see pain, worry
and indefiniteness writ large on their
faces. People from the ground floor
tell with tearful eyes that they have
lost everything; but they have not
lost hope and still have the spirit to
celebrate life and recreate everything
from scratch. I stay alone in a rented
apartment on the third floor and
I have everything in place, but my
car is nowhere to be seen. I realize
that my loss is nothing compared to
that of others. My pain diminishes
when I see the pain of others. I
reach out to people in a situation
that I have never seen before. I don’t
know them but they are my family
now. I am completely disconnected
from my own family (They are in
Delhi – worried about me). My last
communication with them was early
in the morning when I got some
signal on the roof top.
During this trying time I come across
a senior citizen who has shifted
upstairs from her flooded first floor
apartment. She has not had a wink of
sleep the whole night but she is busy
preparing food packets and taking
the help of people who can throw
these to bachelors who have no food.
I talk to her. She says she loves Christ
and she also loves human beings
and animals. She loves humanity and
believes that true prayer is in service
to people in distress. What a noble
thought. She bears no pain on her
face for the loss she has suffered.
Every now and then I see her serving
food to people with a smile. She
embodies human kindness and
grace. It reminds me of the idiom -
‘Handsome is as handsome does’. I
see another group of people huddled
together planning to reach out to
neighbors to help them and bring
them out of their misery.
Now it is the third day of confinement
due to the incessant rain and
continuous flooding.
There is a young couple from
Ludhiana. They are busy serving
people. Later on when the water
recedes and leaves our colony, I see
this couple cleaning the muck from
their ground floor flat. They have lost
everything, but the fighting spirit and
smile continue to stay on.
The water has vanished from the
scene. The wind is still, but one can
see the destruction everywhere.
There is no sign of electricity and
communication network. Through
the day most of the residents are
fleeing from the colony as the water
level recedes. Rescue teams are
helping them to reach safer places.
Night falls. I look for candles and
have food with the people from other
floors who have shifted into mine.
We are happy to be together and
someone remarks that it is candle-
lit dinner, and we all laugh. I feel
after a long time a family has gotten
together to enjoy a dinner in candle
light. A pin drop silence falls for some
seconds. May be the flash back of
their loss is troubling, but again
we start sharing the food with one
another. Sharing brings us closer and
generates true and selfless love. Such

is the power of sharing. People are
not hesitant in asking /giving water
and milk for children. I feel a sense of
achievement when I share my candle
with a family. I am ready to make
many pieces of this only candle if it
brings a smile on someone’s face. Big
things are done once in a blue moon,
but small beautiful things can be
done every day.
After three days under siege by the
floods the ‘Family members’ leave
for safer places as there is a rumor
that a bigger flood is on the way. I
am alone now with one oil lamp
and wick, waiting to get hungry and
eat the only packet of food. There
is no one to talk to. I have been
used to meeting and talking to so
many people during the past week.
I come out in my balcony look for
people that I may share my feelings
with. Only the darkness and ghostly
silence surround me. I feel left out.
Emptiness engulfs me.
Chennai flood has taught me many
things. I have become more mature,
patient and sensitive. Now I call the
city “Namma Chennai” and I feel
very proud to be a part of it.
Everyone from L&T is very keen to
come back to the office as early
as possible as they are concerned
about the wellbeing of their fellow
colleagues. The management is
doing the best to reach out to
everyone on a war-footing - trying
to bring back normalcy. I need my
mobile to be recharged. During this
search I see many faces thronging
the streets. When I smile and I get
a warm smile in return, I tell myself
“Chennai is smiling once again”.
I am very happy and enthusiastic
now. I see at a distance a colony that
has electricity due to a generator.
I dare to ask a security Supervisor
‘Subramanian Anna’ to allow me to
charge my mobile. He looks at my
face and instantly allows me at the
Gate. There are so many things to
make one happy.
On the road again I reach office from
the back gate. I raise my hand to ask
for a lift from people on bikes and
cars. I am pleasantly surprised to see
a man riding a three wheeler meant
for the disabled, stopping for me and
ready to give me a lift. I am touched
and moved. It seems Chennai
has seen many faces of humanity
personified.
My few days in Chennai have taught
me lessons for life. Life is to be
celebrated everyday and adversity
makes us stronger and more
compassionate. We are all brethren.
Every one of us has the power to
touch lives. We should enable people
to face challenges. We must empower
them to create and recreate. That is
the true essence of life. We do not
need to be powerful and rich to help
people. We only need a beautiful
heart with lots of compassion and
empathy.

Always wanted to have days off from studies or work,
Never Expected these many off days
Always wondered how life would be with candles and lamps
And longed to have a candle light dinner with loved ones
Never Expected to live a life without electricity
Always wanted to run away from the madding crowd, technology, apps
computers, mobile phones FB, whatsapps and internet
Never Expected to be disconnected in this way
Always had fond rain memories of playing with paper boats in front of a house
Never Expected to see real boats in front of houses saving lives
Always wished for chopper ride, to see the bird’s eye view
Never Expected to see one on our roof dropping food.
Always when nature’s fury strikes the earth
Humanity comes together to save Humanity
Never seen a unity like this before
Chennai gave it all at once

L&T’s Way of LifE From supporting old age homes and orphanages to meeting the needs of special children, from running marathons for a cause to many other reach out initiatives, L&Teering is a part of L&T’s way of life. Here’s a quick look at how L&Teers helped change lives of people in communities around project sites.
On 3rd June 2015, HelpAge
India Chennai HelpLine 1253
received a call from a Good
Samaritan, Mr. Krishnan who
had spotted an elderly lady
near Albert Theatre, Egmore.
82 year old Dhanabakyam
had been on the streets,
surviving merely on the food
provided by the passersby.
She had spent about five
terrible nights on the streets,
terrified by stray dogs and
swarming dengue-bearing
mosquitoes. On receiving the
call, the rescue team reached
the spot and took the lady
under their custody. On
enquiry, the team discovered
that she had lost her way and
had landed in Chennai. Her
loss of memory added to her
woes. She was mentally and
physically misplaced and her
family details were unknown.
After completing the initial
documentation formalities
and police memo, the rescue
team rehabilitated her on the
same day, to Little Drops Old
Age Home at Porur, a shelter
for deprived and deserted
people.
It was a new environment
for Dhanabakyam and Ms.
Mary, the caretaker of the
home spent considerable
time consoling, encouraging
her and taking care of
her. Gradually she started
adapting to the environment
and started engaging herself
in the daily activities of
the home and remained
optimistic about reuniting
with family. Back home, her
entire family was in search of
her for almost six months.

The same project has taken an initiative of using plywood arrangement scheme drawing from the plywood used for slab shuttering.
This involves the placement of plywood as per the arrangement used in the previous slab which helps in avoiding cut pieces of plywood. This also increases the repetition of plywood and helps in reduction of scrap thereby saving plywood cost.
This practice is recommended for all sites which will certainly reduce plywood cost.
