CONNECT 2020

ON YOUR MARKS

On Your Marks in March is the opening event of the Connect 2020 programme.

On Your Marks is critical to the establishment of a powerful, energised and connected 2020 cohort. As such, attendance is non-negotiable. Please ensure you are at On Your Marks.

The three-day gathering is held at a fabulous venue in the Berkshire Downs. Be warned: mobile phone coverage and wifi is patchy at best. That’s deliberate – we need your full attention!

We will help you understand how to make the most of your time on Connect and give you lots of opportunities to meet with your fellow members. Carefully selected speakers will share their insights and stories of Leading Change: responding to software accelerated disruption; driving the sustainability agenda; aligning personal purpose with business as a force for good; and effective networking and storytelling.

“ The Wavelength guys don’t offer up glib or easy answers. It is a grown up programme for grown up people. I recommend it highly” MICHAEL ANDREWS, DIRECTOR, WAITROSE

CONNECT 2020

ON YOUR MARKS SOME PRACTICAL TIPS

DURING‘ON YOUR MARKS’

If you are coming from outside London or the South East we strongly suggest that you try to stay closer the night before so you don’t have a stupidly early start.

Give yourself permission to enter fully into the experience. Turn off your email and be fully present.

Most importantly, come with an open mind and a spirit of curiosity.

BEFORE‘ON YOUR MARKS’

DO TELL your PA and office that you will be incommunicado at Sheepdrove – phone coverage is patchy and the wifi is equally hit or miss. Consider putting your Out Of Office message on.

DO NOT schedule any conference calls if you can possibly help it.

AFTER‘ON YOUR MARKS’

DO NOT schedule heavy meetings for 20th March! You will be tired and buzzing – and frankly not much use to anyone!

DO schedule time to speak to your team, peer group, Board or whoever else is an important part of your eco-system about who and what you heard at Sheepdrove. This is something you should try to do after every Connect session.

BUT don’t rush into it. Think hard about what your insights and learnings mean for your organisation, your team – some ideas you can steal with glee and implement immediately, but some will need translation to be relevant to your business. Structure your feedback.

You are likely to leave Sheepdrove inspired, tired, having learned loads, your head spinning with new ideas and ‘What ifs…?’ You may even feel a bit lost. THAT’S OKAY. Many people who said Connect was the best leadership learning experience of their careers felt like that at the start.

If you feel puzzled or wonder what this has got to do with your day job, talk to someone on the Wavelength team. They are there to help and can share with you the experiences of the hundreds of people who have ‘done’ Connect.

environments and speaks with profound honesty and authenticity about the challenges of trying to stay true to your personal values when the culture you lead is doing everything it can to undermine and destroy them.

As Director General of the prison service in England and Wales he had the most thankless and difficult of all public sector leadership roles. A hostile and change-resistant prison warders union on one side, the hang ‘em and flog ‘em tabloid media on the other, and responsible to short-term Westminster politics, Martin used his time in prisons to bring decency and fairness to a system lacking both.

In 2005, he took over Barnardo’s and turned its fortunes around, transforming the country’s biggest provider of help to poor and abused kids.

Today Martin remains a high profile media figure with his role as adviser to the Government on children. He is also the Chair of the Portman Group and on the Board of the Advertising Standards Authority.

DAME SUE CAMPBELL CBE HEAD OF WOMEN'S FOOTBALL, FA & FORMER CHAIR, UK SPORT

In the three years before the UK won the London 2012 bid, Sue took an existing organisation, UK Sport,

and transformed it, culturally and organisationally, into an organisation fit and ready to be the driving force behind the UK’s outstanding medal success.

Sue was appointed as Head of Women’s Football by the FA in January 2016 and is overseeing the transformation of women’s football for both athletes and fans.

Sue was Chair of UK Sport, the strategic lead body for high performance sport in the UK. It invests Exchequer and National Lottery funds in Britain’s best Olympic and Paralympic sports and athletes to maximise their chances of success on the world stage. The success of Sue’s influence at UK Sport was always going to be measured in one way – medals. In Beijing Great Britain & Northern Ireland went from 10th to 4th in the medals table and at the London Olympics from 4th to 3rd. This success is even more impressive as it was delivered through 47 different sporting disciplines and thus 47 different governing bodies.

Now as Head of Women’s Football at the FA, Sue is continuing to drive change. A recent survey by analysts Nielsen Sports revealed that almost one in five adults in the UK would call themselves a women's football fan – a 60% increase in the past two years.
