From the Editor’s Desk

2020 has certainly been a challenging year to begin with! Weak global market and epidemics! In this issue, I will ask “How socially responsible are you?”. Has each one of us, be you individuals or industries been taking due cognisance on how our consumption and production habits affect the environment? And, do you know that the many drastic environmental happenings since late Decem-ber 2019 until now have their root sources from how the noncha-lant ways of living have affected Mother Earth! Hence, there is now the urgent need for each one of us to inculcate social responsibil-ity, both individuals and industries. The pointers highlighted in the International Standard ISO 26000:2010 provide a means of achiev-ing the benefits of operating and living in a socially responsible manner. The main objective of social responsibility is to contribute to sustainable development as envisioned in United Nations’ Sus-tainable Development Goals (2016-2030) that have been included in our 11

th Malaysia Plan (2015-2020), the current Shared Prosperity

Vision (2019-2030) as well as the planning for our 12th

Malaysia Plan (2020-2025). A forum on ISO 26000 was recently conducted to educate people on the importance of social responsibility. I am pleased to know there are sectors that are keen to pursue respec-tive social responsibility; namely, Malaysia Institute of Accountants, the Electrical and Electronics Association of Malaysia, Malaysia Mo-bile Crane Owners Association, Pos Malaysia and even SMEs like Siti Khadijah Holding Sdn Bhd. What about you?

More Vets needed – Veterinary Services Department (VSD). The Malaysian Veterinary Council recorded a registration of 2,512 veterinarians nationwide. This means that we have one vet for every 12,000 citizens. Despite this, there is an increasing demand for clinical practices contributed by enhanced awareness in animal welfare and higher number of pet owners. Hence, Malaysia experiences a shortage of vets. The council has addressed this short-age by giving temporary practising permits to qualified individuals and foreign veterinarians. The important role of vets need to be make known. The Director-General of VSD highlighted that “vets are the ones involved in controlling zoonotic diseases; diseases that can be transmitted from animals to people such as rabies and avian flu, and preventing their spread to human”. He added that, urbanisation has reduced the gap between wildlife and human. Thus, VSD places due im-portance on the role of specialist vets to continually monitor the situation and conducting numer-ous tests to detect any outbreak! Besides, the role of veterinarians is also important for food pro-duction as the food industry needs their expertise to help improve the productivity of farmers. Apart from productivity, vets also assist in ensuring food produced by farmers is safe for con-sumption. This opinion is supported by the Malaysian Association of Food Animal Veterinarians, especially so when modern living necessitated the food production industry produces disease-free meat. Perhaps, it is time we gave due recognition to vets so that Malaysia could have productive food industry as well as safe meat for consumption.
