SECRETARY MANAGER’S REPORT:

Hi Members,

Our busiest time of the year is just around the corner and we have arranged some fantastic events

and activities for the festive season. The Outlook Brasserie is putting on a delicious seafood platter for

Melbourne Cup on Tuesday the 4th November, take a look at the detailed menu on page 4 . We’ll also

be televising the race on our new HD projector screen in the bistro, so you’ll be guaranteed a great

view while you enjoy your lunch and maybe a champagne or two.

This year we have our annual Kid’s Christmas Party and Toy Raffle, which will be held on Sunday the

7th December, doors open at 12pm and the event runs from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. The major prize will

be a 32GB iPad Air! Take a look on page 15 for full details of the day . Tickets will be on sale from the

1st November at Reception ($1 per strip of 6 tickets) and you must be here on the day to pick your

prizes.

The Elton John Tribute Show will be at Penshurst RSL on Saturday 22nd November, doors will be open-

ing at 8pm for an 8.30pm start. Call our friendly reception staff on 9580 3749 to book your spot, tick-

ets are just $10 each.

One of our more familiar staff members, Sue Turrall, has announced she will be retiring on the 6th De-

cember. On behalf of the Board of Directors and all the staff, we would like to thank Sue for her 29.5

years of service and wish her well in the future. Sue has played an integral part as a Supervisor in the

Club and will be missed by all, including many of our members.

We are constantly looking at ways to improve the quality of our services and value our members and guests feedback as part of this process. If you wish to share your thoughts on any aspect of the Club operations, please see our Reception staff to obtain a Penshurst RSL feedback form.

Regards,

Chris Hendley

THE OUTLOOK BRASSERIE NEWS:

PENSHURST RSL TRAVEL CLUB

SUB CLUB NEWS...

It’s spring, so a day visiting the tulips was organised for 3 October. It was decided to bypass the enormous crowds of Floriade and Berrima, and instead enjoy a coach trip to the little-known Tulip Top Gardens at Sutton near the ACT.

There was a brief stop at Mittagong for morning tea, before the 41 of us continued our jour-ney. The gardens were located just a few km past Lake George, with a large sign and several banners on the Federal Highway making them impossible to miss! After collecting our admis-sion tickets at the top gate, we walked the curved downward path to the hidden valley be-low. Pretty blossom trees lined the way, but, around the corner, the sight that stretched ahead took our breath away. The limited information available states that the gardens were established in 1997, comprise 10 acres, are family-owned and only open for four weeks each

SUB CLUB NEWS...

spring.

Nothing could have prepared us for what obviously is a mind-boggling amount of work over 11 months of the year by just two people – a thousand blossom trees which would need pruning, and thousands upon thousands of tulips in all colours and varieties. They were complimented by sev-eral flower varieties such as daffo-dils, and pansies were a popular choice for the garden borders. Over half a million bulbs and flow-ers (grown from seedlings) are planted by hand (and then dug up) each year - an astonishing feat! Several willow trees not only completed this pretty picture, but provided shade around the grounds where plenty of seating was on offer. A free sausage or egg sandwich was in-cluded in the entry fee, as was free tea and coffee all day. Other food was on sale at very reasonable prices; there were a few stalls where it was possible to purchase paintings, glass jewellery etc., and a plant nursery. Picnics and leashed dogs are encouraged. We admired the small waterfall and surrounding plants located in one corner of the property, and some of us ventured up to the 70-metre high lookout. At 2.30 pm, it was time to drag ourselves away and, including a comfort stop at Sutton Forest, we were back at Penshurst by 5.30 pm. It had been a really lovely day and we had been blessed with perfect weather.

SUB CLUB NEWS...

PRSL YOUTH SWIM CLUB What a brilliant start we’ve had to the season. Already we have over 95 members (re)registered. It’s delightful to see all those familiar faces back in our pool and great to see so many new ones too. Our Committee is evolving each month and we are very pleased to announce that a Learn-to-swim dad, Chris Gericke, has put his hand up to take on the position of Honorary Club Treasurer. Thank you Chris. During August Coach Vince trained our new teachers & offered a refresher course to those teachers returning this season in all manner of techniques to get the very best out of our little Learn-to-swim students. It was wonderful to see how dedicated our 22 Senior Squad teachers are to helping your children learn to swim. This season we welcome Ben Oliver, Eden Mc Sheffrey & Ryan Little to the fold. You guys are going to be GREAT teachers. CPR Course Committed to bettering our Swim Club and therefore our teachers, by any means possible, on Saturday 13 September we paid to have our teachers and senior swimmers take part in a Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) course. It was so well received that we intend to run it annually. Thank you Penshurst RSL for permitting us to hold the course onsite in the Legends Lounge. It is with great pride that we advise that the following 26 Swim Club Teachers, Senior Squad, AustSwim Supervisors & volunteer parents are now fully qualified to administer CPR. Congratulations to you all. Stefanie Boots Matthew Boots Brendon Bottos Lecia Bottos Vince Bottos Ashlee Day Taylor Day Casey Day Ben Dibdin Thomas Dibdin Anna Dvorak Chris Gericke Callum Gibson Ashleigh Hollis Diana Hollis Anthony King Angus Little Ryan Little Bridie McIntyre Eilish McIntyre Niamh McIntyre Eden McSheffrey Cameron Murden Courtney Murden Ben Oliver & Ray Roy. Teacher appreciation weekend In November, Swim Club is taking our learn-to-swim teachers (13yrs-20yrs) away for the weekend. The purpose of the weekend is to say “thank you” to our teachers for volunteering their time each week to teach your children to swim. It’s also a great excuse for a little “team bonding” mixed in with a modicum of outdoor adventure. We are off to Camp Wambaroo in the Southern Highlands. As well as having some well-earned rest and relaxation, our teachers will be partaking in such activities as archery & raft building, giant swing & flying fox. Weather permitting there will be a bonfire on Saturday night – perhaps we should learn how to make s’mores? We can’t wait to show

you some great photos next newsletter Club Captains. We would like to introduce you to our 2014/15 Penshurst RSL Youth Swim Club Captains and Vice Captains. These four senior members (amazingly) share almost 40-years of Swim Club experience between them. There’s nothing they don’t know about Swim Club. Brendon Bottos-Vice Captain, Callum Gibson-Captain, Eilish McIntyre-Captain & Lecia Bottos-Vice Captain are there to help all swimmers during Saturday lessons; but there’s no doubt that they come into their own at Zone Carnivals where they are especially good at looking after our new & inexperienced zone representative swimmers. We encourage our parents to introduce their little swimmers to our Captains and Vice Captains so that they will always have a friendly face and an exemplary role model to look to. The Representative Season is upon us. Our new Swim Club shirts have arrived and look great on our Club representatives. Our first carnival was held at Botany Aquatic Centre on October 18th. We were elated that we had 46 swimmers attend & over the moon at our brilliant results. Congratulations Swimmers, well done. Limited Availability. Currently we have a few vacancies in Stroke Development - 7.40am Saturday mornings and Learn-to-swim – 8.20am Saturday mornings. Please let us know if you are interested in taking up one of these. Remember to quote your RSL membership number for priority placement.. Leonie Bottos - Swim Club Registrar. Swim Club: 9596-4243 [email protected] Find us on Facebook.
