Assessment is the process of collecting evidence of students’ knowledge, skills and understandings in order to draw information about that student’s current level of attainment. We also assess students against continuums of learning that help teachers identify what each child needs to learn and know next. As a school, we undertake both formal and informal assessment activities to collect information about students’ learning. To gather the information we need, we use a variety of assessment methods because not all methods are capable of providing information about all kinds of learning. For example, some kinds of learning are best assessed by observing and talking to students; some by having students complete projects or make products; and others by having students’ complete paper and pen tasks. We also use a variety of assessment tasks to provide opportunities for every student to demonstrate what they know, understand and can do and to give students multiple opportunities to demonstrate their learning in a range of contexts. This ensures we can draw on a wide range of evidence and develop a complete picture of your child’s achievement. This information determines our future teaching and provides teachers with the information that goes home in our semester reports. Reports Home Our Semester 1 reports will be going home on Thursday 29 June 2017. Parents are welcome to make an appointment with the class teacher at any time throughout the year if they have any concerns or issues regarding their child’s progress. Give Me 5 for Kids Pyjama Day Fundraiser Our SRC students are excited to be holding the Give Me 5 for Kids Pyjama Day fundraiser this Friday 9 June. Students may wear their pyjamas to school with joggers (not slippers or ugg boots) and are requested to bring a gold coin donation to support the sick children and their families who are supported by the Give Me 5 for Kids charity. Enrolments 2018 It has been lovely to start meeting our new Kindergarten students and families through their enrolment interviews. If you have not already done so, you are encouraged to contact the school office or download the enrolment form from our website. Deputy Principal’s Report

Shine Program

The purpose of the Shine Program is to explore the concepts of worth, strength and belonging. Within the safety of a group environment, the girls engage in problem solving activities, discussions, craft and games designed to build resilience and self-confidence as they respond to the challenges of friendship and life. Felicity Robinson, our school chaplain, has worked with these girls and they enjoyed their final session last week. We thank Ms Robinson for her contributions to this program and for facilitating the important learning for the students involved.

Student reports

Currently our teachers are working tirelessly to produce student reports. These will be sent home with every child on Thursday 29th June, Week 10. Thank you to all our staff for the time and effort put into these, to provide parents and carers with important information regarding their children’s academic, social and behavioural achievements. Should you wish to discuss any aspects of your child’s progress or their school report, please make an appointment with your child’s teacher.

The girls were very excited to be having a dress rehearsal last week, in preparation for the big event.

Koori Choir Performance at Mingara

Last Monday, the TLLC Koori Choir performed at the opening ceremony of the Country Women's Association. Over 600 people, including the Governor of NSW, his wife and the World President of the CWA attended the ceremony and watched the TLLC Koori Choir sing songs to celebrate Aboriginal heritage and culture. The 30 students from Wamberal Public School who are members of the TLLC Koori Choir sang with pride and joy. This ceremony was a wonderful experience for our students. Thanks must go to Mrs Tyson for her work with these students in providing them with such wonderful opportunities to celebrate their culture.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Our focus for PBL this week is the Library and the computer areas. Teachers are discussing the importance of safety and respectful treatment of these spaces. For our students, this looks like:

Everyone Everywhere Every time SAFE RESPECTFUL LEARNER

LIBRARY AND COMPUTER ROOMS

• Line up quietly in two lines

• Quiet talk • Share

• Use equipment correctly

Our PBL rewards day will be in Week 10 and students will be trading their SRLs on Thursday 22nd June, Week 9. The next few weeks provide the opportunity for students to demonstrate being safe, respectful learners at our school, to maximise the rewards they can trade for on Rewards Day. With options such as

watching ‘Sing’, attending a disco (K-2 only) or enjoying a BBQ (3-6 only), there are many exciting opportunities so we encourage students to aim high. This is always a lovely way for our staff to show the

students how much we value and recognise their positive behaviours for learning at Wamberal Public School. Please be aware that any students selecting the food options, will be required to bring in their permission slip to participate. These notes will come home with students following our trading day in Week 9.

Responsible Pet Education Program

Over the past few weeks, Kindergarten and Stage 1 have enjoyed a visit from the Responsible Pet Education Program. This program facilitates lessons for young children on how to behave appropriately around dogs with whom they are unfamiliar. The children all enjoyed meeting Tilly and learning about safe ways to approach a dog in public, as well as keeping themselves safe around aggressive animals. The students enjoyed writing about this upon their return to class.

SCHOOL FAMILY CONTACT INFORMATION UPDATES

Sadly sometimes relationships break down and the court makes orders that change the contact parents can have with their children or the role they play in making decisions about their children’s education. These can be Family Court Orders or Apprehended Violence Orders. Parents can also reach agreement about issues such as contact in a parenting plan. If this happens, it is important that you provide the school with a copy of any court orders or plan that could impact on your child’s education. In the absence of any notification to the contrary, the school will assume that both parents continue to retain a shared and equal parental responsibility for their children and should be involved in making any decisions regarding their children’s education. This means that the school will recognise that each parent has equal duties, obligations, responsibilities and opportunities in relation to matters involving the school. If any changes occur in your family relationships, which have the potential to impact on the relationship between the school and your family, please advise the school immediately and provide a copy of any court orders that may be obtained.

These orders will be stored securely and only accessed by staff who need to see them in order to plan for your children’s learning and support and related issues.

Have a lovely week.

Meet our Staff… Name: Tane Duff

Role: 4 Blue Classroom Teacher and Relieving Assistant Principal Stage 2 Background: I grew up on the Central Coast and I am proud to be raising my family here as well. I have a beautiful daughter and my wife and I are expecting a son in October of this year. I feel blessed to be able to provide my family with the opportunities the Central Coast has on offer. After finishing Year 12 at Erina High I worked several years in construction predominantly in landscaping and later in earth works. Following this I had a brief time in real estate before finding my passion for education. I proudly hold a Bachelor of Early Childhood studies and a Bachelor of Primary Education. It is this grounding in early childhood education and experiences outside of the education system that underpins my pedagogy and practice. Teaching and Leadership Background: I was appointed at Wamberal Public School in 2015 and am thankful each day for the fantastic support and friendships I have here. This year I have been given the opportunity as relieving Assistant Principal for Stage 2 and I am enjoying the challenges of this role. My passion for this role lies in assisting classroom teachers and the wider school community to ensure student wellbeing, cohesive teaching practice and improved educational outcomes. I enjoy giving back to the community that helped make me the person I am today.

Hello from the library,

Reading Time vs Screen Time

One of the main competitors for student leisure time is screen use. A large percentage of Australian children spend more than the recommended time for their age group on screens. Unfortunately, increasing amounts of screen time reduce the time available for reading for pleasure. What strategies do you have in place to ensure that your child is not over-exposed to screen viewing? How do you encourage reading time for your child? Remember that time spent reading for pleasure is directly linked to positive learning and life outcomes. Infographic: How much time are Australian kids spending on screens?

Scholastic Book Club Issue 4 Book Club brochures were sent home last week and orders will be due by Sunday 18th June. Thank you for your support, as our library benefits from every purchase you make. Please note that orders for Issue 3 have closed. Final late orders will arrive shortly. Happy Reading Mrs Knight Teacher Librarian
