We can’t wait for summer to get here as there are several new things in store for our summer conference kids and their families during the summer of 2008. First of all, we have a new Childrens Program Supervisor. Her name is Ellen Kliewer and she comes to us from Sherman Lake YMCA Camp in Michigan. Ellen loves kids and has worked with them for nine years. She is excited to be part of the CBCC program team and looks forward to getting to know the kids and their families. She is enjoying putting together the children’s curriculum for this summer high- lighting the Summer Olympics that are coming up in a few months. Dear Friends,

Do you mind if I take a minute in this Selah to talk about money? Oh, not to ask you for any(at least not now!). But to talk about some of the many ways our friends support the CannonBeach Conference Center—some of which perhaps you weren’t aware of before now.

Everyone knows religious, non-profit ministries like CBCC rely on gifts and offerings tooperate. This has been true since our founding and continues today. The $2,000-20,000 permonth we receive in donations during the year is essential for our financial health and ability tooffer scholarships to those who need them.

But there are many other ways people give that have an enormous impact on the ministryhere as well.

Gifts in Kind save us cash out of pocket by providing donated, tangible items we can use inour operation or facilities. The most common are cars or trucks. Most of our fleet of vehicles isdonated! However, we also have gladly received donations of a portable generator, boats, jewelry, furniture for offices and staff housing, beautiful artwork to decorate stark walls, usable tools, newexercise equipment and much more.

Memorial Gifts, in remembrance of a friend or loved one, have provided money for out-door seating, landscape plants and trees, a beautiful pulpit, guest scholarships, a piano and more.

Estate Gifts, unplanned for, have had an enormous impact on our ability to maintain andupgrade our facilities over the years. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say all our recent buildings havebeen made possible by estate gifts of some kind—Tides, Pacific View Lodge, the Recreation Centerand even the pending new dorm. Our first computer system and several subsequent upgrades weremade possible by estate gifts. Nearly a third of our three-quarters of a million dollar facility renova-tion over the past six years has come from estate gifts, including new roofs, beds, staff housing, kitchen equipment, etc. The purchase of several key properties in the past 20 years had their seedmoney in estate gifts. Even the start/development of our guest scholarship fund, now at $40,000,came from a portion of two estate gifts. Truly these are gifts that live well beyond the giver!

Giving of Time and/or Expertise may not be thought of as valuable, but can take the place ofa necessary expense or enhance the ministry in some way. Volunteer electricians save us thousandsof dollars each year. A volunteer tile layer recently tiled two public restrooms. Volunteers built 22Adirondack chairs for guest enjoyment. Volunteer help on building projects has been part of thefabric of our history/culture. Management, financial and fund raising consultants have helped usover the years, saving money in services and strengthening the CBCC leadership.

I’m pretty excited about all these creative ways our friends have supported the ministry of CBCC!And as I said, that’s not even mentioning the nearly two thousand people each year who give regularor one-time gifts of $2, $30, $400 or $2,000! We praise God for all these supportive people!

By the way, as part of our commitment to financial accountability, CBCC has an annualaudit done by an independent auditor, has a standing Finance & Audit Committee of the Boardto monitor finances and is a member in good standing of the Evangelical Council for FinancialAccountability. We echo what St. Paul said, “For we are taking pains to do what is right, notonly in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of men.” (I Cor. 8:21) For more information onour financial stewardship, contact CBCC at 503-436-1501 or [email protected].

haul rope and swings as a long pendulum to a view of mountainsand ocean that takes their breath away! This element is great forlooking at how we motivate ourselves as well as challenging indi-

viduals to go beyond their per-ceived limits. The junior andsenior high students (MidKidsand Youth) will be flying highon the Giant Swing as part oftheir weekly outing. As youcan see from the picture, myyoung daughter enjoys theGiant Swing.

We’ve also got a newinflatable! Actually, it’s a mon-

ster inflatable measuring sixty-five feet long by eleven feet wideand thirteen feet high. This is an obstacle course inflatable.

Participants race each other through tunnels and pop ups andwalls before they climb up a rise at the end and slide down. Wewill be using the obstacle course inflatable during the weekly car-nival and possibly during a session time for the younger kids.

While we are excited about the new things in the children andyouth programs, we are not forgetting what we hold dear here atCBCC. Our purpose as always is to be a part of God’s plan in thelives of children and youth and their families whocome here. We do this by loving them, clearly pre-senting the gospel to them, nurturing their rela-tionship with Jesus Christ, and helping them growin God’s Word in fun and relevant ways. In otherwords, we’re about changed lives. The dream andvision that began here at Cannon Beach withArchie and Evangeline McNeill over sixty-fouryears ago continues to this day. We praise God forHis faithfulness and look forward to serving Himand our guests this summer at CBCC!

Building Project UpdateNow that the planning is done and permits are in hand, the Office& Dormitory Project will begin moving ahead more quickly.

Site and utility ground work has taken several weeks. A new parking area wasput in place first to replace the spaces we are losing. Cooperation with the City ofCannon Beach on their projects in the area will save us several thousand dollars.

The concrete foundation slab and stem walls should all be poured by theend of May. After that, framed walls and roof trusses will begin to appear andgo up through the summer. Our goal is to have the building closed in by earlyfall. Completion could realistically occur by the late spring 2009.

Lots of volunteers will be needed beginning the first of June to help withframing, siding, insulation, window and door installation and other phases of

construction. Sub-contractors will pour concrete and install plumbing, electrical, heating and ventilation and perhaps sheetrock androofing. Steve Simer, Volunteer Coordinator, is busy scheduling volunteers now for the next five months.

We currently have about $475,000 in the bank and about $20,000 in outstanding faith commitments. This should carry us abouthalfway into the project. An estate gift, foundation money, and individual gifts will, Lord willing, provide the rest of the money tocomplete the project debt free.

If you would like to help in some way, contact Jeff Carlsen, Executive Director at 503-436-1501 or [email protected] Or contact SteveSimer, Volunteer Coordinator, at 503-436-9619 or [email protected].

Vehicle Donations NeededOver the years CBCC has used vehicles donated for ministry use. This hasproven to be a significant way for folks that enjoy supporting the Conference Centerto help us maintain our operations.

We are in particular need of small pickups to replace our aging vehicles used by themaintenance and landscaping departments. CBCC can make use of a variety of vehicles. So if you have a truck or other vehicle in working order, please consider donating it tothe Cannon Beach Conference Center. Contact our maintenance manager, Sam Ortwig,at (800) 745-1546 or email: [email protected].

Without Debt by Carl Sandeen

My mother and father experienced the GreatDepression and tried to encourage me to stay out of debt. And for the most part, I’ve done okay. Theonly experience I have with those hard timesis through the stories. I remember a fine ladyfrom Dallas, Oregon telling me she sprinkleda little sugar on her lard and toast whenthere was no money for fancier food. Ofcourse my dad would have a story or two forme when my “wants” got a bit out-of-hand.

When it comes to personal experience, I know the reliefmy family has felt when household debts are few. There wasthe personal experience of working with my Seaside church, paying off debts, and seeing the church freed up to signifi-cantly expand Christian outreach. And the opportunity tomove to Cannon Beach while Pacific View Lodge construc-tion was in progress. To realize that God’s people were mak-ing it possible to have this valuable asset available for min-istry without huge debt. I later helped with the RecreationCenter and knew that when the doors opened, the bills hadbeen paid and there was opportunity for significant ministryat conferences, retreats, and in the community.

As I visit with Conference Center guests and assist withfund-raising efforts, I’m thankful for the heart of folks thatbelieve in what is happening in Cannon Beach and are willingto sacrifice financially. Rather than talk about how hobbled we

are with debt, it is fun to share about the blessingsof ministry coming our way each day, and the

good financial stewardship our board and fellowstaff members promote. Wow! Another project is

underway and through gifts of all kinds, I trust we’ll openthe doors debt free in a few months and enjoy fully many

new ministry opportunities.
