If we suspect you have an infection, we will wipe the wound with a swab and send this to the laboratory for testing. This is to find out which bacteria is causing the infection so that the appropriate medicines can be given to treat it. On leaving hospital If necessary, we will give you information on how to continue to look after your wound until it heals. If you have any cause for concern you should contact your GP. For further information Please contact the Infection Control Team on: 0845 155 5000 extension 79716. Or you can go to the following websites: The Department of Health Website: www.dh.gov.uk/hcai Public Helath England Website: www.hpa.org.uk NHS Direct Website: www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk If you would like this information in another format, for example, large print, or audio, or the services of a translator please contact us on the number above Preventing surgical wound infections Publication date: April 2008 Last review date: December 2013 Next review date: December 2015 Leaflet code: UCLH/MB/INF/IC/SURGINF/2 Re-order code: UCLH0293 © University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Unique Code: 28973 What we are doing at UCLH Our operating theatres and equipment are cleaned to the highest standards. Cleaning procedures, for staff and equipment, are followed for every operation. Before an operation starts, the skin area is cleaned and sterile sheets are used to protect the operating area. The air and environment in the operating area are regularly checked for any risk of infection to patients. Where necessary, patients are given antibiotics before, during or after surgery to prevent infection developing. Every patient is nursed with care to try and avoid infection getting into the wound or any other area, such as a catheter or drain (where a tube is used to drain a wound of excess fluid). All staff must wash their hands or use the alcohol gel before they touch a dressing or wound. All wound dressings will be changed according to proper clean techniques. We regularly monitor surgical wounds to make sure that there are no outbreaks of infection in the hospital. A member of the UCLH wound surveillance team may come and ask you some questions during or after your hospital stay or send you a questionnaire in the post.
