More people are living longer than ever before. How can we ensure that older adults have the supports they need in Whitchurch-Stouffville while respecting all the skills and experience they have to offer?

The WS YOU 177 collaborative of local organizations is working on Age-Friendly Plus – what we call ll ages are supported, connected, and valued for a stronger community.

Using the World Health Organization (WHO) Age-Friendly community planning guidelines, we’ll be looking at eight broad areas from housing and transportation to community support and participation (see back).

Make sure your experiences and ideas are included in the report that will be presented to the community, the Town of WS, York Region, and the Province of Ontario in Spring, 2016.

HELP CREATE A 7-GENERATION COMMUNITY

Can you get around easily and safely in public buildings (e.g. library, sports facilities, Town Hall), parks (e.g. walking paths, benches), and other outdoor spaces (e.g. sidewalks, street intersections, etc)? Do you feel actively welcomed to use these public spaces? At night? In winter?

Do you have safe, affordable housing? What supports do you need to remain independent? If you need help inside (e.g. housekeeping) or outside (e.g. snow clearing), do you know where to get it?

How do you get around in the community? Can you travel where you want to go, whenever you wish, conveniently and safely? How is the lighting and size of street signs?

Do you have access to the social and health services you need to stay healthy and independent? Do you have a family doctor in the community? What medical and social services do you use in the community? Outside the community? How responsive to your needs are medical/social services?

Do you feel you have the opportunities to participate in community decision-making? Do you have opportunities to contribute your experience and skills to the community in paid work? Volunteer work? Do you have adequate information about and interesting options for volunteering?

Are you aware of the programs and services available in the community? Is information readily available, appropriately designed and delivered to meet your needs? Where do you get most of your community information?

Do you have opportunities for meaningful social relationships (e.g. culture, education, recreation, spiritual activities)? What interaction would you like to have with younger generations? Do you think the needs/preferences of older adults are considered in planning by local organizations?

Are public services, media, commercial services, faith communities and civil society respectful of the diversity of needs of older adults and willing to accommodate you? Do you feel respected and valued?
