"What is This You Have Done?" Genesis 3:13

I. A Question about Life's Most Serious Subjects.

A. The subject is sin. (1 John 2:15-16)

B. God's original warning to Eve – death, still stands.

- "The wages of sin is death."& “you shall surly die.”

C. Today's testimonies to the truth of God's warning.

"What is this you have done?"

II. It is a Question That Calls for Repentance.

A. It is a specific question to each individual.

- It is a pointed question that demands an answer.

- Romans 14:12, so then each of us shall give account of himself to God.

- It is a stern question with a hint of danger.

- God is not asking us this question because He doesn't know.

- It is a question that demands personal examination.

B. God's questions are not to condemn, but to convict.

- God is not trying to condemn us, but to provoke repentance.

- 2 Cor. 7:10, For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

- Romans 2:2-3, But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?

C. Conviction of sin can bring about repentance.

- Repentance begins with the awareness of sin;

- Repentance is a change of attitude about sin

D. How would you answer God's question to Eve?

- Does this question bring conviction to your heart?

- Have you come to realize the hurt your sin?

- What do you need to confess and forsake today?

E. Turn from your sins to Christ today!

Psalm 1:1-2

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, not stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night.

F. God does not will that any perish in sin leading to death.

- 2 Peter 3:9, The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

III. This is the Question That Precedes the Promise of Redemption and Forgiveness.

A. Bruising the serpent's head. (v.15)

- This is the first promise of redemption in the Bible.

- Hebrews 2:14-15, Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

15And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

Colossians 1:13-14

He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

Colossians 2: 13-15

And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,

14having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

15Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

B. Like Eve, we are all sinners. (Rom. 3:23)

- We have all done things we regret

- We have all broken God's righteous laws.

C. God offers forgiveness and eternal life to repentant sinners.

D. Whatever you have done, God still loves you, but requires your repentance in order to forgive and cleanse you.

1 John 1:8-9

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

"What is this you have done?"

Galatians 6:7

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked;

for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

Come, all you that are weary and heavy laden,

and I will give you rest.
