How will we know what we have learned?
Answer: Assessment
Assessment- comes from the Latin word “assidere” which means to sit down with
the learner and gather information.
Assessment is …a process of gathering information about students.
a way to demonstrate program effectiveness.focused on student learning and developmental
outcomes.
Types of assessment
Summative AssessmentFormative Assessment
Pre-assessment
Cooking Analogy-For Example:
When the cook tastes the soup, that is formative. When the guests tastes the soup, that is summative.
When the cook goes to the grocery store, that is pre-assessment.
Plant Analogy-For Example:
Summative assessment of the plants is the process of simply measuring them. It might be interesting to compare and analyze measurements but, in themselves, these do not affect the growth of the plants.
Formative assessment, on the other hand, is the equivalent of feeding and watering the plants appropriate to their needs - directly affecting their growth.
Formative Assessment is to summative assessment what a
physical is to an autopsy.
“ We can enhance or destroy students’ desire to succeed in school more quickly
and permanently through the use of assessment than with any other tools we
have at your disposal.”
PYP Essential Elements: What Makes Assessment Authentic?

We analyze and appreciate different cultures and ways of learning. We reflect on every stage of the learning and teaching process. We show evidence of the student’s learning process to the school community. We modify teaching methods and means of instruction. We collaborate with other teachers and students.
The JIES staff uses:
Exemplars (Standards)- performance criteria with clear expectations
Checklists- lists, information and attributes that should be present.
Anecdotal Records – brief written notes that represent stages of learning.
Continuums (Reading Levels)- these show a progression of achievement or identify where the child is in the progress.
