Over 80 years ago few oil companies brought their products to sparsely populated areas. Those that did often increased the price of their products. That’s when a group of farmers joined together to make purchases as one entity, thereby increasing their buying power. This cooperative effort was the start of the FS System.

Today, our FS Companies are proud to continue the heritage of increased buying power for innovative petroleum products.

I have only driven for 2 years -this year will be the 3rd year but Ihave been at the Grundy CountyFair Grounds for the Max and Orionshow etc. e two years that I havedriven the 1st year it rained and Iforgot my rain coat but on had twopair of rain pants. I was lucky to geta jacket from a lady I can't think of

her name but her dad once ownedthe round barn farm in Manhattan. Idrove for my son in law on an ACtractor for only two days. Last year Idrove a tractor owned by Jim Hiblerand it also so rained bad one day butI had enough rain protection. But Ienjoyed it. One driver had troublewith his Farmall with the gas line

plugging up but he was able to fixthe problem and finished the paradeokay. Hope to make it this year as mySon in Law sent in my papers. Hisname is Don Phillips. Let me knowwhat I need to do yet. I won't needany hotels. I may send in for mylunch tickets for probably lunch anddinner. I have not did that yet.

FUN IN THE RAINSTORY BY WILLIAM POHL

I reside in Sedona, Arizona. Ialways look forward to the HeritageTractor Adventure every year. Itake the Amtrak train fromFlagstaff, Arizona to Chicago,Illinois. Our daughter and herfamily reside in Lisle, Illinois. So Ialways manage to incorporate thatvisit with the tractor ride.

From Lisle I go down to CedarLake, Indiana to our friends HerbKleine and his son David on theKleine Dairy Farm. That is wheremy 1952 "G" John Deere tractor islocated. Without their help withmy tractor I would not be able toparticipate in the tractor ride.

I enjoy the people on the rideand renewing old friendships withthis great group of people. Iparticularly enjoy looking at all thebeautiful farms and their crops. The activities are all fun and thefood is great.

I appreciate all the work MaryBeth and June do. And a big thank

you to everyone who make thisHeritage Tractor Adventure thegreat succes that it is.

PUSHING THROUGH PUTNAM COUNTYSTORY BY JOHN GUENTHER

I am probably your farthesttraveler to register and partake inwhat will now be my 3rd Heritagetour plus 7 other tractor tours I havecompleted, but the Heritage tour gotme started. e midwest location, getting to meet Max Armstrong andbeing amongst fellows who still farmor have done so recently were all bigdraws. In the early 60's I raised about

500 head of Charolais cattle, butsince then have had little opportunity to enjoy driving a tractor...until Iheard about your tours. I have neverbeen disappointed by thecamaraderie, fun of driving an oldtractor, home cooking and wonderfulfresh outdoors all in abundance onthe Heritage tours. anks for theopportunity to experience this.

morris, iL - In October of2005 I purchased an unrestored 1953Minneapolis Moline ZB from mywife’s cousin who farms nearElkhorn, Wisconsin and collects oldmachinery to stay busy in the winter.e tractor needed some minor TLCbut nothing major (so I thought?).

I changed all the fluids at thesage advice of MM collector, BobSaterlee ; worked at rebuilding thesheet metal over the winter andarranged for a sandblast and newcoat or Prairie Gold II from a localspray shop. at tractor looked asgood as new…or so I thought!

My very first tractor ride was inthe summer of 2006. I joined goodfriend Roger Weber, Seneca, IL. onthe Route 66 Tractor Road Showfrom Towanda to Dwight along old

Route 66. What a great first ride!e Minnie burned a couple quartsof oil over the two day event but nobig deal right?

at next season I joined Rogerand our good friend Julian Houston,Morris, IL. on the 2007 HeritageCorridor ride along the I & MCanal. at first trip was a slow gofor much of the 71 miles out to thePeru Airport from Morris. Myslowly dying tractor required severalchanges of fouled plugs during thatfirst long day. By the time we arrivedat the airport in Peru, I had decidedto take my sick child home for amuch needed complete overhaul.

e ZB and I made the next twoHeritage Corridor rides and Ienjoyed most every mile!? Farmmachinery was never known for

breaking down “in the shed” and the2008 and 2009 rides were noexceptions. e Minnie did falter acouple more times over those twoyears but that just proved up the realvalue of having two to three hundredother tractor enthusiasts on the trailwith you.! Help was alwaysavailable!!

e exhilaration of ridingthrough miles of backcountrywithout breakdown and the peace ofmind knowing that if and when youdo need help, it’s there for the askingjust cannot be put into words. You just have to “ride the trails” tounderstand the camaraderie thatdevelops. I can’t wait for the 2011version to get under way. It’s thetenth annual and will be the bestever, I’m sure!

Driving down country roads andseeing what you miss driving by car. Itis like a big Family Reunion of tractorlovers joking and comparing storiesand tractors. Its difficult to really get the feelof the Heritage ride withoutexperiencing it first hand. Hard tobelieve it has already been 10 yearssince the first ride in 2002. I recall atractor friend of mine telling meabout the adventure he spotted whilelooking through a nearby townnewspaper. e add was just a smallad and would have been missed bythe untrained eye. But when you arethe out look for anything withtractors, your eyes can focus onanything. After calling the phonenumber for more information, thentelling my wife about I signed up thenext day. en my wife got thinkingabout it and she had me sign her upthe following week. Now, makingthe commitment, what about whichtractors to take. e minimum speedwas a speedy 6 miles an hour. Manyof our collections were earlyworkhorses of the 1930's, such asJohn Deere model D, A, and ARwould be to slow. We had 2 unstyledB's , however one was still in the

process of a restoration. Wellmechanically it was sound so let’sjust get the paint job done, but thiswas already the middle of May.Well time ran out for a good job andrain had kept from doing anypainting outside. So with a call 2nights before the event to my tractorfriend, he let me take his 1947Model A instead. Without knowingwhat to expect the folks at the eventwere great, and so much was wellplanned. Despite getting a little wet, that first year seemed really cold forthat time of the year. Having a coldbottom and cool air blowing reallymade us think that maybe this wasn'tsuch a great idea. We stuck it outand meant so many great people andkept up the friendship afterward, wecouldn't wait for next year. We werealso discovering that my wife Beckiewasn't the only woman on this ride, actually there was 10 of them andMax Armstrong, after referring tothe drivers as men for a meeting, hadsomehow honor those women folk,

because after all this great countryagriculture was also worked by thewomen of the form. And as Maxinterviewed each one of them, theyeach had their own story that tiedthem to their tractors and their farmheritage.

e second year we had bothJohn Deere unstyled model B ready, with mounted umbrellas and betterrain gear. It wasn't soon aftergetting started, and we usuallybecame the last group since wemoved the slowest, that the heavyrain came up on us. It really rained, there were times I could not seeBeckie's tractor in front of me, andthat was only 20 or so feet. e raincame down in sheets and morehorizontal from the left (west) toright. Amazing the unstyled B'swith their early ignition system, consisting of a Magneto, wires andopen sparkplug, kept on runningnever missing a lick. We passedmany newer tractors pulled over tothe side and stalled out from the

I have become involved with HTAas a staff member driving a cubcadet utility vehicle. Some of myclose friends and neighbors havenow joined me in this activity. Wefind it a restful yet meaningful fourdays as we provide a service andassistance. Also we hand out thewater as a service from Cub CadetCorp I also enjoy being the LASTone in line to pick whoever is left.

As part of the staff, it allows me tovisit with all the different tractorsand people and to use some of myexpertise in farmall tractor repair. Iparticularly enjoy rolling down theroads at slow speed so I can see allthe grounds, wild life, trees etc., etc. Most memorable was the entiretown being taken up by tractors lastyear, whatever town that was.

rain. at was it for the rain then itgot hot, really hot. By the end of thefirst day we were tried out from theheat and wind. During the secondday is when we got our first call fromour expecting new mother, daughter,Lesley. Yep and out first grandchild.Well she was letting us know she washaving some pains after ourLabrador had jumped on her to meether since she was all alone. Usingcell phones on a open tractor, no cab,is a real treat. During the afternoonof the second day while we all wereon the trail we had to stop and wait, and wait, and wait. It appears theywere taking the tractors across awooden plank bridge one at a time.Well not being able to do anythingand just waiting on phone calles formedical progress with a new motherwas pretty much all we could do tokeep somewhat calm. Our newfound friends has some greatrefreshment for us while waiting in

the woods on that mosquito infestedtrail. e leaders after realizing wewould not make it to end for dinnercame along and broke a bunch of usout of that line and made our waythrough the town and to the fairgrounds for that evening, making itjust in time for dinner. Our thirdyear was great because everythingcame together, with great weather;tractors performed great and wasenjoyed by all. Again seeing oldfriends and making new ones. evenestablishing the GREAT SLOWGROUP.

e fourth year was Beckie’s last, during the second day her tractorquit running and I just didn't have allthe equipment and parts to keep themagneto going. Soon after herswent down mine began to fuss. Atone stop, I managed to pull off theright parts off her tractor and keptmine going, she was fine with that.We loaded her B up and it was done

for that year. I managed to keep theother one going, but it was still fussy. On the fifth year Beckie decided notto participate but instead broughtour new Grandson and the 2 of themwatched all the tractors go by. A 2year old really has fun with everyoneand a lot of photo opportunities. Ibrought the B back and friend ofours came along and drove our 1952Ferguson and had a great time. Wedecided the 5th year would be ourlast since we are doing our own ridenear Paris and Marshall, IL. But lowa behold I am planning on comingback for the 10 year reunion and Ihope the GREAT SLOW GROUPwill ride again. We have retired the 2B's to doing shows only with themand now switched to 2 John Deere, model 50's. We have even putmanufactured double wide paradeseats on them for the Grandkids, yep,we now have a 2nd grandson, and heis just crazy about John Deere.

I first heard about tractor ridesmore than 10 years ago that were inIowa and I was very interested, butdidn’t want to travel that far—as Iknow my bad luck with breakdowns. When Max announced on WGNradio the first-ever “Heritage TractorAdventure”, which was to be heldnot too far from where I live, I calledMary Beth and said, “SIGN MEUP.”

e night before the “ride”, myJohn Deere B would not turn over—a bad “ground”. I did not get muchsleep that night wondering if thiswere a “sign” not to go, but thatSunday morning, everything wentsmoothly when I was heading toJoliet racetrack, unloading the B andchecking in.

We all drove our old faithfultractors to downtown Joliet, but onthe way back I thought I heardsomething…”strange.” What I heardwas the unmistakable sound of airleaking whenever the back rightwheel turned over. I held my breathand barely made it back to theracetrack. All the guys driving pastgave me their “best wishes” that I’dbe back in the ride the next day. Forthose who don’t know me, I amFAMOUS for flat tires: on the farm,on my rural mail route, and travelingto tractor shows—or anywhere, anytime. I could write anotherarticle on my flat tire adventures. FScame out that next morning withtwo guys who worked very fasttogether! ey installed in my oldtire a new tube and their largest boot, which made them nervous; they said

it would either hold for 20 minutesor 20 years (It actually held up until Ifinally replaced both back tires, as theother side went flat on the last day ofa tractor ride about three years later).Max took a great picture of me andthe flat tire.

Monday morning on WGN radio,Max was on the air telling everyonethat I had the official first breakdownof the new “Heritage TractorAdventure.” When I got home fromthe “ride”, I got lots of kidding fromradio-listening farmer friends—andeven an offer of a good used tire.(Ten years later I’m still kidded aboutthat flat tire!) e rest of the ridewas great: meeting new friends, enjoying great food, and hearinggreat stories! On the last day of thatride, I received the official “HeritageTractor Adventure” chair for the firstbreakdown.

Over the years on the rides, I had

other minor breakdowns and evenran out of gas, but was able to keepgoing with help and a pull fromfriends, Alan and Phil Plane, whom Ihave followed on the rides the lastseveral years.

One more breakdown story: Myson Alan (named long before I metthe Plane brothers) came with meone year. We were on the Illinois &Michigan Canal towpath onemorning, both driving John Deere Atractors, when my magneto went out.Son Alan was in front of me andbacked up to pull me, but he warnedme, as he hooked up that he knew hehad a bad sparkplug and wasn’t surehe could pull me with only onecylinder. Sure enough, his A diedand would not restart. Alan Planebacked up with his Massey-Harristractor, hooked on my son’s A andpulled both of us to our noontimestop. You would not believe how

10 YEARS ON THE RIDESTORY BY CORNPICKER BOB

Page 13: WHAT I’VE LEARNED OVER THESE TEN · Chicagoland Speedway track. at same year we had the opportunity to park our John Deere "80" & "40" in front of the Rialto eater in downtown Joliet

many cameras came out and tookpictures of this Massey pulling twoJohn Deeres! I’m just glad that PhilReid and his High Yield Productionscamera crew were not there to filmthis “parade.” We found the part formy A and pulled out a sparkplug wecarried for my son’s A and had bothtractors fixed before we enjoyed ourlunch.

Please don’t blame John Deere formy breakdowns, just my bad luck;several friends have told me, if Ididn’t have BAD luck I wouldn’thave ANY luck at all!

I believe the best time I had on the“ride” was on the towpath, with mytractor in road gear at about halfthrottle, leaning back in the seat, enjoying the view and followingfriends.

Another great part of this “ride”was meeting Max. I talked to Maxin Joliet before my famous flat tire. I

collect corn pickers of all makes, andI happen to have a restored pickerjust like his Dad had on their farm inIndiana during Max’s childhood;years later, Max finally had a chanceto pick with that corn picker at ourfarm one fall day. So, because of mycollecting of corn pickers and puttinga book together on pickers, Max hascalled me many nicknames: “PickerBoy”, “Picker Bob”, “Mr. CornPicker,” but I guess I’m best knownas “CornPickerBob,” so thank you,Max for your friendship.

I want to say thank you, also, to FSfor the free fuel and all the work toget it to us. Remember the famousflat tire they fixed for me? I toldthem to charge the repair to my localFS farm account, but it never showedup on the bill. I called up to seeabout paying the bill and they saidNO CHARGE—they felt sorry forme having the first breakdown. So,

THANK YOU, FS!!!One more thought on these

“rides”—I have a very understandingwife. Last year, our only daughterwas married on our farm. ewedding date was about a week and ahalf after last year’s ride. My wife,Phyllis, said I could go on the ride(she knew I had not missed a rideand did not want to break mystreak)… as long as the farm wasready for the wedding BEFORE theride. Well I’m a greatprocrastinator—and, of course, thefarm was not ready. As I said before,I have a VERY understanding wife! Iwent on the ride, and worked mybehind off when I got home, as mywife and daughter are “worth” it. ewedding was beautiful, the weatherwas great, and I believe Phyllis stillloves me.

I don't drive the tractor, leave thatto the husband. ink I've beenstanding on some corner somewherefor almost all the years. My one timeI can tell a man where to go, I love it.Don't like the sun burn, the bug bites, the wet shoes while getting soakedbut oh the fun of meeting so manydifferent people across the country.Looking forward to it yet again.
