Welcome! Thanks for taking the time to download this e-book - What are my Essential Needs?

This book has been put together as a simple and quick guide for you to discover and connect

to what your individual essential needs are. As you will see from the background information,

we all have needs (both essential and non-essential) and it’s important to acknowledge them

and nurture them. Also, please remember these are your basic essential needs (not your

wants, goals or any non-essential needs as they are very different).

As you work your way through the book, I encourage you to be honest with yourself and tell

the truth (as in the end you are only holding back from yourself), trust yourself (and your

responses) and also to take responsibility for the essential needs you identify.

Background InformationMaslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) started his professional career as a behaviourist, however moved on to become a psychoanalyst. In 1943, in a paper titled “A Theory of Human Motivation”, he proposed the psychological theory known as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. His suggested we had two different types of needs -

•the first four levels of the pyramid and are needs relating to survival and focusing on deficiencies (D-needs)

•the final layer and needs relating to psychological growth and focusing on being ourselves and everything we are capable of becoming (B-needs).

Maslow suggested we focus on the first level of motivation and then once that is met then we can focus on the next level. The needs are as follows -

Stumbling blocksWhat are my stumbling blocks?

What are your stumbling blocks? You know when you make up your mind to do something, however something else gets in the way (i.e. taking care of your needs!). It could be feeling like you don’t have enough time, not being organised, limiting beliefs, or just not being clear about what the challenge really is. Really a stumbling block can be anything!

In the table below, identify your stumbling blocks. Once you have identified them, identify how you are going to remove them. It may be that you put a plan in place to overcome them (or sometimes being aware of them is enough for them to fall away). You may also like to see if you can delegate anything. If you require more boxes - just print this worksheet out again!
