Welcome to our December issue...Ice Skating returns for the 9th year running to the beautiful setting of Henry VIII’s historic red brick Tudor Palace. Situated on the banks of the River Thames, Hampton Court Palace provides the perfect picturesque setting for festive skating and even more so at night, when the palace is beautifully illuminated.

Brooklands will be the place to be on New Year’s Day for all lovers of vintage and classic cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles, as Brooklands Museum hosts the biggest annual January 1st gathering of such vehicles in the South-East.

Christmas is a very special time of the year at Painshill Park when the frosty landscape creates an amazing transformation. The follies look even more magical and the rich variety of evergreen conifers and pines are picture postcard perfect.

Spare a thought for the poor House Team at Polesden Lacey while you’re putting your tree up this year… It will take two of them a whole afternoon just to put the lights on the magnificent 18ft tree in the Central Hall, and a team of six all day to hang all the beautiful, handmade, traditional decorations!

When Charles I moved his court to Richmond Palace (no longer standing) to avoid the plague in London, in 1625, he turned his manor into a deer park with herds of fallow and red deer. The park was enclosed with an 8 mile long brick wall in 1637. Most of the wall that still encloses Richmond park is the original. The Royal deer have been maintained in Richmond ever since.

This gives you just a small taste of exciting events and articles featured in this month’s issue. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year...

Jewellery is the ultimate gift for someone special. Valuable, intimate and enduring. We all have an image in our minds of a perfect piece and what significant message of emotion we would like it to convey to a loved one. But we also have views on what we hope for from the buying experience. We are looking for guidance in quality, style, technical detail or, nowadays, even in ethical issues. The search may seem a daunting undertaking, yet it can be personal and pleasurable in itself. The answer lies in going direct to the designer.

Jon Dibben has run his own workshop and shop for over

twenty years, tucked away in rural Surrey, where he and his small team handcraft every design, in limited numbers and with meticulous attention to detail. They are always on hand to share their expertise and to help customers choose the ideal piece.

Making the difference

“Nowadays, people looking for jewellery are bombarded with designer images,” says Jon. “And they might look great, but the quality isn’t always as impressive.

Our difference is that we do everything in our own workshop- from the first sketches to the setting of the stones. It’s really

personal to me. I know every stone in every design,

having individually chosen each one. I’ve seen each piece taking shape on the bench. Sometimes it

seems quite hard to let them go!”

Natural Inspiration

Inspired by nature’s blend of form and function, each of Jon’s designs embodies his

design philosophy, combining aesthetics with practicality. This is particularly apparent with his engagement, wedding and eternity rings – created to sit perfectly together.

“It seems natural that these three pieces should be designed to fit together- in the same way that the events they symbolise have a relationship to each other. One of the best things about making jewellery is that we get to be involved in the most meaningful times of people’s lives. We see them go through engagements, weddings, anniversaries, and celebrating the births of their children- as well as the gifts in between.”

The Personal Touch

F E A T U R E

Page 15: Weybridge & St Georges Hill Life Dec 2011

Enhanced Meaning

In addition to his elegant engagement ring sets, Jon is known for striking one-off pieces, but his reputation also rests in using only the highest quality metals and stones - ethically sourced where possible. He is one of only thirty designers and craftspeople in the world licensed to use responsibly mined certified gold, produced through the Fairtrade supply chain.

In house gemmologist, Rachel Pullen explains “Working with the same trusted dealers for over twenty years means we can give our customers some of

the most remarkable stones in the world, including diamonds that go beyond the conflict-free certification, to a traceability leading back to the country, or even the mine, of origin.”

Leisurely Style

Jon Dibben’s shop is a welcoming and stylish haven set at the heart of an old brick kilns, just south of Guildford. Well-known as a destination for those in search of bespoke jewellery, there is always a wide variety

of work on show. Many pieces are unique, while others can be easily personalised in a metal or stone of choice. Visitors are encouraged to browse at leisure, or discuss ideas they might

have to remodel their own jewellery.

“We are obsessive perfectionists,” concludes Jon. “I think

this is obvious to people when

they see or try on our designs. We are making

heirlooms, which people will want to pass down through the family. They have true longevity.”

Alongside his own work, Jon Dibben also features jewellery by other selected designer makers. Like Jon, they work on a very small scale, providing an alternative to mass-produced styles and, surprisingly, prices start from only £90. Images of their work are now included on the Jon Dibben website.

Meanwhile in the Tudor

Historic Royal Palaces is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace and Kew Palace. We help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built.

We receive no funding from the Government or the Crown, so we depend on the support of our visitors, members, donors, volunteers and sponsors.

Th ese palaces are owned by Th e Queen on behalf of the nation, and we manage them for the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

We believe in four principles. Guardianship: giving these palaces a future as long and valuable as their past. Discovery: encouraging people to make links with their own lives and today’s world. Showmanship: doing everything with panache. Independence: having our own point of view and fi nding new ways to do our work.

THE DEERS OF

RICHMOND PARK

hen Charles I moved his court to Richmond Palace (no longer standing) to avoid the plague in London, in 1625, he turned his manor into a deer park with herds of fallow and red deer. The park was enclosed with an 8 mile long brick wall in 1637. Most of the wall that still encloses Richmond park is the original.

The Royal deer have been maintained in Richmond ever since. March and early April, when the trees have not yet leafed out, is a particularly good time to spot them.

The deer have played a major role in the Park’s history and have shaped the landscape too.

Their special grassland habitat depends on grazing and the parkland trees have a distinctive ‘browse line’ as the deer eat all the leaves and twigs growing below about 1.5 metres.

Deer grazing also prevents tree seedlings from growing, keeping the grassland open. For young trees to survive they need to be protected against damage from deer antlers for some 50 years.

During the autumn the deer ‘rut’ (breeding season) takes place. The red stags and fallow bucks compete for females (known as hinds and does respectively). At this time, the large males roar, bark and clash antlers in a spectacular way in an attempt to fight off rivals and to attract as many females as possible. The young are born mainly in June, and are hidden by their mothers amongst the bracken and long grass. Females and their young are very vulnerable and sensitive to disturbance at this time

Herds of red and fallow deer roam freely within much of the park. The herds are culled in November to keep numbers manageable and the park population healthy.

The British Deer Society and the Deer Initiative of England and Wales, who are regarded as the main welfare organizations dealing with the welfare and management of deer nationally, recognize that parkland deer numbers must be managed and that removal of some of the deer is

necessary each year to keep populations at acceptable levels. The keeping of deer in enclosed English parkland has a

long heritage. Although many ancient parks were originally maintained for hunting purposes, in recent times it is recognised that the deer herds of the Royal Parks in London are an integral part of the parks’ ecosystem, as well as being a valuable amenity and educational feature. These parkland deer are wild animals, which are not regularly shepherded or handled; they are left to breed normally and to establish normal social behaviour.

All deer parks have a maximum capacity of deer numbers, which must not be exceeded to avoid problems of disease

and damage to the natural environment (the complex ecosystems for which Richmond Park is notified

as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, National Nature Reserve and a European Special Area of Conservation, being of particular importance).

The deer are wild animals, so never try to touch or feed them. Always keep a respectful distance, especially if you have a dog.

You can adopt a deer in Richmond Park - http://www.royalparksfoundation.org/support/

foundation/foundation_adopt_new.cfmWhen you become an adopter, you’ll

receive a certificate of thanks, postcard, factsheet and a badge pin. An adoption makes an unusual gift and is a great way to mark a special occasion!

As well as deer, a range of other mammals lives in the park, though they may not be as obvious. These include Fox, Rabbit, Shrew, Mice and Vole. Unfortunately the Brown Hare, which was once common in the Park, has vanished as a consequence of increased disturbance. The Park’s diverse landscape, abundant insects and plentiful tree roost sites are good habitat for bats. There are recent records of at least nine species including all 3 species of Pipistrelle, Noctule, Serotine, Brown Long-eared and Daubenton’s bats.http://www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/richmond_park/

Richmond PaRk was oRiginally a deeR-hunting PaRk, and still has 300 Red deeR and 350 fallow deeR.

WINTER WEEKDAY WEDDINGS ARE THE NEW TREND... AS STRAPLESS DRESSES & LOUNGE SUITS ALSO BREAK WITH TRADITION

More and more couples are choosing to marry out of season,

according to Loseley Park, the UK Top Ten wedding venue, as voted by viewers of Sky’s Wedding Channel.

And with a further break from tradition, couples are marrying during the week in a radical departure from Fridays and the weekend.

“We’re finding that people are markedly more open to getting married on, say, a Thursday in February,” says Michael More-Molyneux, owner of Loseley Park, which holds more than 80

weddings a year. “It’s definitely a growing trend and it’s partly because conventional timing seems less important nowadays, and partly down to price.

“A Monday-Thursday wedding here in January, February and March costs five times less than a Saturday ceremony in the high season from May till the end of September.

“You may not be getting warm sunshine (or rain!) and the garden, but you are getting The Great Hall, roaring fires, candlelight and mulled wine. People also love the Christmas decorations and tree, which

add to the festive spirit.”Another attraction of winter weddings is the long-haul honeymoon to escape to the sun.

Timing is not the only tradition which is changing, says fashion expert Sam Neville, founder and owner of Mamfii Bridal, the Surrey experts, who organise the catwalk shows at Loseley’s Wedding Fairs.

Fashions in clothing are changing along with the traditional days and seasons for weddings. “Today women are more adventurous and daring,” says Sam, “so the strapless look is acceptable even in

Church. And in the winter the style’s just the same but with a fur shrug and thermals!“Traditional clothes are more pomp and circumstance, but the whole move is towards greater informality. Only half the grooms wear morning coats now, as normal suits are more relaxed, and quite a lot of brides like to be more modern.”

The arboretum was originally planted by Wilfred Fox, who bought the land in

1937. Dr Fox described the valley as ‘ quite unspoilt, of pastoral and wooded character, patterned with hedgerows and abounding wild fl owers,’ and saw the potential as a place to create a collection of trees and shrubs in a semi natural setting.

Th e dramatic hillside location provides the perfect showcase for Dr Fox’s vision, using plants to ‘paint a picture’. Today the award winning collection of over 1000 shrubs and tress provides a stunning display of colour.

With its welcoming tearoom off ering warming refreshments and its varied events programme, Winkworth is far more than just a walk in the woods. With the wet summer this year, we do not know for sure what this autumn will bring. But we can be certain that from now through to the new

year Winkworth will again put on its best show as the thousands of trees create canopies and carpets of startling colour. Just as Dr Fox originally intended.

London offers probabLy the best shopping experience of any city in the worLd. London is the shopping capitaL of the worLd.

From the boutiques of Bond Street to the teeming Oxford Street fashion stores and vibrant street markets, there is something to suit even the most discerning of shoppers.

Find out where the best of London shopping can be found with our

guide to where you can get your shopping fix!

REGENT STREET (abovE)Regent Street is home to a number of large outlets offering everything from toys and trench coats to fabrics and food.

Perhaps the street’s most famous resident is the elegant Liberty store, founded in 1875. Many of the shops along Regent Street (and especially Saville Row, running parallel) are more expensive than most on Oxford Street but more exclusive.

If you have children, the world’s best toy shop should give them something to remember! Hamleys is a London institution, a huge, well-run emporium stacked from floor to ceiling with excellent toys. It is a wonderful place to take a child, and great fun for adults as well.

Other stores that amaze are Jaeger, Hobbs, Mappin & Webb, Karen Millen, Reiss, Swarovski, TM Lewin, Nike’s flagship store, The Apple Store and the first British Ferrari store a real treat for Ferrari enthusiasts, and so much more. For those looking for that extra special treat, Godiva is one of the most prestigious chocolate brands in the world and if your mouth is watering you can visit one of the many eateries available on Regent Street including the new La bottega del Caffè, Pret A Manger, il Pomodorino, Ping Pong.

boND STREETFor serious fashionistas, Bond Street and its environs are the place to be seen in and shop! New Bond Street boasts one of the biggest and best concentrations of designer shops in the world, including Donna Karan, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Nicole Farhi, Armani, Jimmy Choo and Ralph Lauren. Quintessentially English style can be found at the Mulberry and Burberry stores.

Bond Street also plays host to Sotheby’s auction house and a number of antique stores and markets have popped up in the area.

If you or your other half has a thing for diamonds, you should know that Cartier, Tiffany and Asprey are among the jewellers on this exclusive, expensive street.

KING’S RoaD The area was made famous by a lively local scene during the ‘Swinging 60s’ and punk fuelled seventies. The doyenne of punk fashion, Vivienne Westwood, still runs her first ever store at the so-called ‘World’s End’ end of The King’s Road.

Although the area has none of the character of that time, it is still full of famous faces and is one of the best and most varied places to shop and eat in London. For fashion, King’s Road offers high street regulars such as Jigsaw, French Connection and Gap but if you’re looking for something more original American Classics sell vintage Levi’s and tuxedos.

At the Sloane Square end, crowned by Peter Jones, there is the pedestrianised Duke of York Square - full of modern shops and cafes, including Mary Quant and Yves Delorme.

You can purchase anything from antiques at The Furniture Cave, to a £40,000 bed from Hastens, also taking in upmarket stores quirkily named R.Soles, Sweaty Betty and After Noah.

KNIGHTSbRIDGEKnightsbridge is one of the most unchanged, attractive areas of central London, with little in the way of offices nearby but plenty of shops and restaurants to serve the needs of local residents. There are plenty of ways to spend money in this beguiling corner of the capital. Harrods is the most famous of the local stores, a huge tourist attraction employing over 3,000 staff in more than 300 departments.

However, some much prefer Harvey Nichols, a chicer alternative with three floors of designer wear, a huge beauty department and delectable delicacies on the fifth floor, all at extremely high prices.

If you have the money to spend and want some designer clothes, look no further than Sloane Street. Christian Dior, Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Armani, Fendi and Dolce & Gabbana are all within easy walking distance of each other - even in heels!

There are also a number of exquisite specialist lingerie stores including Rigby & Peller on Hans Road and La Perla on Sloane Street itself.

oXFoRD STREET Oxford Street lays claim to being London’s busiest street. The opening of Debenhams and Selfridges in 1909 marked the beginning of the street’s dominance as a shopping area. Amongst the chaos and bustle, retail therapists will find an oasis of calm in the area’s unrivalled collection of department stores.

Debenhams, Marks & Spencer and John Lewis all have their flagship stores on Oxford Street. Selfridges is the department store of Londoners. There’s an incredible selection of British and international designers available and plenty of great restaurants and cafes to chill out in if you get a bit tired.

Oxford Street also offers some of the best choice in terms of high street fashion, if you can fight your way through the crowds.

Among the best shops are inexpensive but stylish favourites Zara, Mango & Monsoon. You will also find one of the largest collection of eateries, where you can relax for

WESTFIELD LoNDoNWith a distinctive mix of designer and high street labels, Westfield London offers the ultimate shopping experience, with over 265 shops from over 15 countries. The Village is a must-shop for all luxury lovers, featuring premium brands, from the world’s leading fashion houses, hot designers and chic boutiques including Burberry, Dior, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Prada, Versace, Tiffany & Co and Omega.

Travelling by car is simple. With easy access from the West Cross route and 4,500 parking spaces housed neatly for you, right underneath the shops. This Christmas, Westfield boasts it’s first ice rink so you can literally skate and shop!

CaRNabY STREETThe name Carnaby Street is synonymous with 1960s ‘Swinging London’ - a phrase coined by Time magazine.

Nowadays the area has gone through something of a revival and is once again boasting cutting edge designer talents and trendy street ware. With over 140 shops, bars and restaurants to choose from in the area, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Shoppers will find rich pickings at urban streetwear shops like Replay, Diesel, Howies, American Apparel and Puma. There are also a number of streets in the immediate area around Carnaby Street - notably Newburgh Street which runs parallel, Foubert’s Place, and Kingly Court which has three floors of one-off ‘concept’ shops, cafes and restaurants set around an open courtyard.

Carnaby Street is a fantastic place to buy sports, urban and footwear, and there’s also a number of fine cosmetics shops - seek out the Cowshed and MAC Cosmetics - as well as a few boutiques selling vintage mod clothing. Altogether very stylish.

CaNaRY WHaRFCanary Wharf is a thriving space and vibrant business district with a wide range of shops, restaurants, pubs and wine bars, as well as healthcare and leisure facilities and an extensive arts and events programme. Their vast range of high-profile retailers secures them as one of the most popular shopping destinations in London eg Aspinal of London, Austin Reed, Bang & Olufsen, Browns London, Dune, Hackett, Karen Millen, Links of London and TM Lewin.

WESTFIELD STRaTFoRD CITYWith over 300 stores offering fashion, food, homewares, health and beauty and much more, you’re sure to find just what you’re looking for. With a state of the art cinema, a luxury bowling alley, exciting food options and a range of entertainment, Westfield Stratford City is much more than just a shopping centre.

You can now glide over the ice and take in views of the Olympic Park... Westfield Stratford City is celebrating its first Christmas with an amazing outdoor ice rink in Chestnut Plaza! The ice rink will be open morning, evening and night.

Westfield’s Santa’s Grotto is the UK’s first to have a 5D film and each child in the Grotto at Westfield Stratford City will have the opportunity to personally feature in the film, helping Elbow the Elf on his journey to help save Santa’s presents from the good Elf turned bad! Visitors to Santa’s Grotto will be immersed in an amazing visual experience which includes wind, lights and elf dust.

Bring the family and enjoy with a day of Christmas shopping, a skate and a visit to Santa!

CovENT GaRDENA visit to Covent Garden is a must, whether you intend to shop, or soak up the atmosphere watching the street entertainers. The focal point of Covent Garden, the market, has dominated the area ever since the Middle Ages. There is also an open-air cobbled area where miming and juggling acts can often be found. Classical music and opera singing often fills the air - not from the Royal Opera House but from street performers who often stage impromptu concerts in the courtyards below street level.

Covent Garden is a mecca for shoppers - high Street outlets include Marks & Spencer, Oasis, French Connection, Next and Monsoon, with menswear at Diesel, Replay, Oakley and Paul Smith. Neal Street, which runs to the north west of the Piazza, has more in the way of urbanwear including as well as trendy trainer shops including Office and Size? as well as the Natural Shoe Store and Terra Plana ‘ethical shoes’. If (perish the thought!) you tire of clothes shopping there are scores of excellent places to stop off for a coffee.

ACCENTUATING A FUSION OF MALAYSIAN & FAR-EASTERN CULINARY DELIGHTS

F O O D D R I N K

Matahari‘Matahari’ lends its name from the Malay language meaning the SUN.In the warm and friendly ambiance of our rustic and cozy restaurant, we aim to bring you a FUSION of the various cooking styles of the mystical Far-East with particular emphasis on Malaysian, Chinese, Thai and Japanese favourites.

Malaysian cuisine itself is a combination of the cooking methods of three nations – Indian, Chinese and Malay. These have merged to make a unique, harmonious blend that is an identifying characteristic

of the cuisine of this tropical peninsular. The use of Indian spices such as cumin, tumeric and chilies, the Chinese influence of soy sauce, garlic and ginger, the Malay contribution of ‘sambal’ & a blend of other exotic spices and the various cooking styles of the Portuguese, Dutch and British during their years of occupation there is evident in authentic Malaysian style dishes.Thai food is rich in texture and characterised by flavours such as the citrus-limes, basil leaves, fresh coriander and coconut milk. An important ingredient

in Thai style cooking is a mild fish sauce that is central as the main savoury flavouring.

The cuisine of Japan has enjoyed an unprecedented boom in popularity, perhaps largely due to the healthy nature of their dishes. The use of seafood, especially fish, and vegetables such as seaweed is central to the art of preparing Japanese cuisine. We hope the above introduction will cast light on the fusion - concept of our unique cooking style and awaken your desire for an exclusive culinary experience.

hat do you do if you really want something special and just can’t find it? When all you yearn for is just the best of its kind in the world - and no-one seems

to have produced it; at least not to the standard you desire? If you are Roy and Tracey Jones you initially scour the

earth for a key ingredient and, when you have finally tracked it down, you create what you were looking for in the first place - the world’s finest luxury chocolate experience.

“I wanted to buy a very special present for a very special person on a very special day - her 40th birthday,” explains Tracey. “Like me she is a chocoholic! I went to the top-end departments stores and even some of the little luxury chocolate boutiques but just could not find what I wanted. There is a lot of nice chocolate about, of course, but, I don’t know, there was always something missing. It was very frustrating and in the end I bought her something else entirely.”That was the beginning but by no means the end of a two year journey which has reached a triumphant conclusion with the launch of ‘the Chocolate’ Roy and Tracey’s new business dedicated to producing ‘the best luxury chocolate experience in the world.’

What is it?In its simplest form we are talking about an amazing ‘experience’. Handmade truffles using an award winning, secret recipe Italian chocolate, filled with champagne, flaked with edible 24-carat gold all enclosed within a bespoke handcrafted boutique box encrusted with more than 450 Swarovski Crystals inside and out. Also made by hand no two of these boxes will ever be the same. The chocolate itself is 63% Toscano Black sourced from a tiny artisan chocolate maker based just outside historic Pisa. The cocoa beans are refined using a traditional granite stone mill and the result has been judged by the Academy of Chocolate as officially the best in the world.

What experts call the ganache - basically the mixture of cocoa, cream and a variety of other ingredients to form

what consumers think of as, well, the chocolate - that forms ‘the Chocolate’ is a closely guarded secret but Roy and Tracey are happy to confirm that there are several glasses of champagne added to the normal recipe. “As we make everything ourselves we can, of course, produce ‘the Chocolate’ without alcohol if required,” commented Tracey.

You Eat thE Gold? It’s the world’s most expensive foodstuff and has been eaten for

millennia. Although the Ancient Egyptians believed it gave them immortality no such claims are made for ‘the

Chocolate.’ (yet). However other authorities do claim that gold has many attributes when eaten,

including generating a higher IQ, managing rheumatoid arthritis, developing mystic power and contributing to a long and healthy life. More seriously it is authorised for use in food products in both Europe and the USA.

High quality chocolate also has its enthusiasts. They claim that chocolate with over 60% cocoa content (‘the Chocolate’

has 63%) reduces blood pressure, decreases the chance of both diabetes and heart attack,

improves the memory and even eases a persistent cough amongst a plethora of other attributes.

Be that as it may the fact remains that ‘the Chocolate’ has a fantastic taste that will

exceed the expectations of the wildest choccie enthusiast. And the memory of the experience will last and last.

Puddleduck Nannies is a unique recruitment consultancy providing a discreet and professional

childcare service to families and organisations throughout South West London and Surrey.

Founders Amanda Cooper and Alison started the agency when they realised it was impossible for them to meet the demands of their careers when continually faced with the all-too-familiar shortcomings of third party recommended nannies. Having formed the business, they committed themselves to a strict manifesto ensuring that the working practices of the company meet the demands of a working parent.

Puddleduck Nannies specializes in matching families with highly experienced qualified nannies and maternity nurses. Their successful strategy of home visits enables Amanda and Alison to build a strong relationship with the family that will continue long after the nanny has been placed. It is vital that an exact character match is reached to ensure a trusted professional relationship.

Following rigorous reference and security checks, interviews and assessments, the agency initially recommends no more than two or three nannies: it is an obvious working practice that sets Puddleduck

puddleducknannies the changing face of childcare

Nannies apart from other leading childcare agencies.

A nanny shapes our children in so many

ways... They challengeand inspire them as they

care for their needs.

Families often query the advantages of hiring a nanny

over other forms of childcare. It is an ongoing talking point that has no right or wrong answers. Puddleduck Nannies however, believes that the benefits are enormous: hiring a nanny not only offers a very flexible arrangement, but gives you the peace of mind knowing that your

child is being cared for in the safe environment of your own

home. Additionally, a nanny will provide your children with more personal care and attention than they would receive in an out-of-home childcare environment.

Good nannies really are, the perfect addition to

your family.

Based in central Esher, Puddleduck Nannies serves the whole of Surrey and Southwest London, whilst attracting excellent nannies from all over the UK.

Their philosophy is very simple, if they wouldn’t hire the nanny for their own children, they wouldn’t expect anyone else to.

Puddleduck Nannies aim is to deliver an outstanding service to families who are seeking the very best childcare available (as well as the least amount of stress) as when you invite a nanny into your home, you are extending your family by one.

When times are tough, money is short and life is not

easy, we all need a little “pick me up” and what better than treating ourselves to a lovely set of beautiful nails that will cheer us up, make us feel good and put a smile back on our faces!

Women will always find the extra pennies for that little treat, and nails are top of the list, because they are visible and we feel great when people notice and comment on our lovely nails.

Nails are one of the few parts of a person where it is not required to look in a mirror to see what they look like, nails allow women to see beauty at their fingertips.

How do you cHoose a nail product witH so many now on offer?Choose a product that you are 100% sure will be good for the nail plate. Don’t just select the cheapest product or the most convenient, make sure the product you choose is well investigated and that the company is well established and has a good reputation.

Unlike other nail finishes, Bio Sculpture Gel is a nail treatment applied as a coating

onto your own natural nails to strengthen and condition them with no damage. Also fantastic on toe nails and will last for weeks. Clients will enjoy seeing their nails transformed to their exceptional potential, with no fumes, no odours and minimal buffing. No more waiting around for nail polish to dry as the Gel dries instantly under a UVA Curing Lamp in a choice of over 140 different colours, French or natural finish. The gel is easily removed without any damage to your natural nails.

No more chipped nail polish as your gel nail colour will be long wearing and chip proof and your nails will keep their well manicured look long after

application. Matching colour varnishes allow flexibility of Permanent Colour Gels – simply apply one of our 140 different coloured varnishes over the Colour Gel. This can be removed easily with our specially formulated “Non Acetone Cleanser” and you are back to your Permanent Colour Gel.

MYTH: Hair extensions Damage your HairFACT: When hair extensions are applied correctly there isvirtually no reason why they would damage your hair, thousands of women have used hair extensions to grow theirown hair to a desired length with no adverse effectswhatsoever. However, that is not to say everybody's hair is suitable for hairextensions. At Rapunzel the safety of your hair is taken veryseriously hence a free consultation is offered along with acomplimentary check up appointment.

MYTH: You can't have hair extensions if your hair is fineFACT: In fact, many women with fine hair choose to use hairextensions to add extra volume. Extensions can be done invery tiny size to be virtually undetectable .

MYTH: You have to dye your hair to the same colour as theextensions.FACT: This would not happen at Rapunzel as every hair colouris kept in stock all of the time.

MYTH: People can tell when you are wearing hair extensionsFACT: When they are done properly by a skilled Technician, placed in the right places with the correct amount ofextensions used & expertly cut in, hair extensions lookcompletely like your own hair and undetectable.

MYTH: You can't keep up your highlights & root colour whenthe hair extensions are inFACT: Actually you can still do highlights, you just work aroundthe extensions. When dying roots the colour can be applied asit normally would. At Rapunzel once you have our extensionsin we can look after all your hairdressing needs if you wouldlike us to.

MYTH: You can't brush & style easily with hair extensionsFACT: As long as the right brush is used (supplied by RapunzelLtd), then you can brush right into and through the roots withno damage to your own hair or the extensions. You can alsouse straightening irons, curling tongs & heated rollers as longas you are careful to avoid the bonds.

Reputed to be the oldest inn in England, The Olde Bell offers locally sourced fare and stylish lodgings so that guests and patrons can rediscover the pleasures of the traditional inn. The first in the family of Dhillon

Group’s stylish modern coaching establishments, The Olde Bell functions as a village in itself, combining great service, thoughtful design, robust food, relaxed surroundings and rambling meadow gardens. With parts of the original building dating back to 1135, the inn creeks with heritage and history, palpable today in the black wooden beams, inglenook fireplaces and crooked, sloping oak floorboards. Loved by Hollywood royalty and political icons, Mae West, Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Errol Flynn were among the many guests who stayed at the inn, along with Winston Churchill and former US president, Dwight D Eisenhower. Nowadays Dustin Hoffman, Erdem Moralioglu and Grace Woodward are seen dining in the restaurant or relaxing by the roaring fire.

While many historical features of the inn remain unchanged, Isle Crawford adopted the restrained-chic aesthetic that she used to revitalise Babington House. Much of the furniture, tableware and textiles were specially commissioned pieces by local suppliers such as Ercol in nearby High Wycombe. The inn bar, ideal for fireside banter, serves local ales, ploughman’s lunches and hearty, nostalgic dishes. The bar comprises chunky tables, low beams and a local, homely feel prevails.

Heart and HeartHThe dining room continues the love affair with the traditional inn concept as ‘warm, affordable and connected to good food’ (Ilse Crawford). The design elements take their inspiration from local history and suppliers. An antler chandelier provides the centrepiece to a dining space furnished with locally produced birch Windsor chairs, accessorised with sheepskin throws. Tactility and historical touches are key elements, the settles are detailed with geometric. Welsh woollen blankets while the walls whisper with references to local legends and folklore; plates printed with vintage images and woodcuts line the walls while literal historical touches such as ceramic pie birds remain.

The main restaurant opens out towards a vast, meadow-style garden, making it an ideal spot for alfresco summer dining, complete with an outdoor summer kitchen. Meanwhile, The Olde Bell’s seasonally inspired menu of traditional and modern British classics is the culinary brainchild of The Olde Bell’s distinguished kitchen triumvirate, executive chef and author, Warren Geraghty, head chef, Andrew West-Letford and pastry chef, Jason Farr. The inn has earned itself a reputation as a foodie retreat with menus that are in keeping with the inn’s essential character, inventive and unfussy. Local suppliers are used for fish and meat and all bread is baked fresh on the premises. In line with his passion for wild food and foraging, Warren has implemented plans to maximise The Olde Bell’s commitment to local produce and nature dictated dining. Since summer 2011, guests and diners have been sampling dishes containing the freshest, home grown ingredients, courtesy of the inn’s very own ‘Kitchen Garden’ and head gardener Mandy Hill.

Simplicity witH modern FlouriSHeSWhile the design emphasis is on the communal spaces, rooms are spread between the main inn and a collection of barns and outbuildings. The bedrooms mix the old with the new, retaining the simple, pared back feel to the communal areas. Comfortable modern beds covered with woven wool Welsh blankets sit atop traditional reed rugs. Additional room features include a rustic oak trestle, an Anglepoise lamp and a chair upholstered in Windsor suiting. Bathrooms are fitted with drench showers in the doubles and elegant roll top baths (as well as showers) in the suites.

inn tHe villageConnected by a ramble of traditional and modern buildings, The Olde Bell’s village-like feel has made it a popular venue for weddings and special occasions. The Tithe Barn and Malt House are licensed to hold civil ceremonies. Meanwhile, the Malt House is available for exclusive hire for very special occasions and includes a dining room and bar, music room complete with grand piano, private garden and personal chef.

Among the The Olde Bell’s many unique selling points is its close, 40 minute proximity to London. Meanwhile, Heathrow airport is a mere 15 minute drive making it the ideal resting point for jaded, weary travellers. Located in a genteel, Thames-side village in Berkshire, Hurley itself boasts countless attractions, among them a picturesque, riverside walk and the historic towns of Henley and Marlow. Many rambling trails and nearby outdoor pursuits will satisfy those with a yearning to explore the British countryside at its best. The inn supplies bicycles and picnics upon request that are ideal for guests who wish to take a more strenuous route to exploring the local countryside, stately homes and nearby attractions.

on tHe webThe Olde Bell’s recently launched website is the perfect tool to whet your appetite before visiting The Olde Bell. Using illustrations drawn by legun, the site perfectly depicts the history, myth and intrigue which surrounds this ancient hostelry. Combining present day photos with a collection of half man – half beast portraits, food news and a blog, the website gives an insight into the coaching inn’s past, present and future. www.theoldebell.co.uk

The Company is a specialist provider of fitted Italian furniture including kitchens and wardrobes. Targeted at the luxury house market, Lida Cucina prides itself in offering all its clients a personal service from initial design consultation through to installation. Each project is tailored to the property, lifestyle and budget.

Lida Cucina has a policy of regularly updating and refurbishing the showroom to ensure it always represents the most contemporary design. Although completely refurbished and upgraded in 2009, the partnership with Pedini was just the excuse needed by the design team to start a major enhancement! The new Pedini showroom has horseshoe shaped base units with hobs and sinks by Barazza, designed specifically

Mary and her team of interior designers offer a combined experience of more than 35 years and have worked on

projects ranging from a high tech cinema room to landmark period properties. Here they create a scheme of understated luxury in Richmond, West London. If you would like to discuss a potential project or are interested in any of the items featured you can contact Mary on (0)207 823 3355

As the cost of moving continues to rise and desirable property remains in short supply you may wish to consider how you can adapt the space you already own. Across the Capital people are doing just that and digging down into their basements or transforming their lofts.

A case in point is this 1930’s loft conversion that is in the process of being transformed from a previous unutilised space into a super comfortable bedroom with separate wardrobe and shower areas. The bedroom measures 5m x 5.5 m and the dressing room is 5m x 2.6 m.

In line with our client’s brief we have created a calm contemporary scheme with a masculine feel. Velvet, silk and wool fabrics have been used to deliver a truly luxurious retreat. The cushions on the bed are to be made up in a stripe claret coloured silk which complement the roman blinds in a matching geometric fabric. Giving further accent a black and cream geometric patterned velvet will cover the seat of the chaise. The large padded headboard is to be covered in herringbone tweed. The statement piece within the room is Bill Cleynderts award winning Herbst writing desk in Macassar ebony.

Moving into the dressing room the bespoke wardrobe has been carefully laid out after consultation with our client. The space saving footstools will be covered in circular

patterned velvet. A full height smoked glass panel between the shower and dressing area provides privacy while visually freeing up space. Underfoot in both areas we have specified a luxurious deep cut pile cream bound carpet with a contrast border in claret. ✱ Reflective surfaces including gloss coated wallpapers and wood finishes are on trend in contemporary interiors. Utilise these

and they will add a sense of airiness. A large oversized mirror will reflect and provide light.

✱ Look for furniture with clean simple lines to increase the visual sense of space.

✱ If you have a low ceiling height don’t draw attention to it

by cluttering it up. Stick to simple spot lights and invest in eye-catching wall and table lamps. Floor to ceiling cupboards will also enhance the feeling of height. Keep door furniture simple and streamlined.

✱ To even out proportions choose low level furniture.

With this project we are working with generous proportions. If your space is limited, consider the following;

A PIECE OF HISTORY IN THE MAKING

Every frame is handmade on the Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells using a combination of innovative modern methods and time honoured traditional techniques. The reverse-carved, boxwood moulds we use to create our frames originate from the historical ‘Bloomsbury Collection’, a collection the Tate

describes as “of extraordinary cultural significance”. These are the same moulds that have been used to create frames for some of the world’s leading art galleries, institutions and stately homes.

TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY STYLES AVAILABLE

Our high quality overmantel and feature mirrors make a fantastic focal point for any room. They are available in traditional or contemporary styles to perfectly compliment your interior décor. For inspiration please browse the gallery to see what’s available. There’s a wide selection of mirrors

or a new home you only really take ownership when you have control of access. To achieve this, you may think it benefi cial to have control of the locks, with keys registered to you and copies not obtainable by anybody else.

Whilst, most of our clients are commercial, the application of a high security master key system is fast becoming popular for the home. It’s very convenient to have one high security key for the house, which gains you entry everywhere, yet the Gardener’s key only lets him through the Side Gate and into the Shed.

on the principal that a picture is better than a thousand words.

Be realistic. Have fi rmly in mind what your budget is and relay this to your designer, even if in broad terms. Without some idea of what your budget is the eventual design could end up totally impractical. Th e other option could be that works are staged over a period in which case mention this is a possibility as it might require some adaptation at the design stage to allow for this.

I am not advocating that you or your designer play it safe, brilliant design often comes about by taking risk, but you the customer need to be happy with it. Garden Design should be a good investment!

H O U S EGARDEN

Before I start I would like to wish all of our readers the very best for the festive season and of

course the coming New Year! Th at out of the way, I thought I would take this opportunity to be a little controversial in this issue.

You may think it a little strange that someone like me who employs people to carry out garden design, would question whether a garden designer is required in all situations.

Garden designers are like artists there are good ones and there are bad. Whether you think they are good or bad comes down to taste and before I upset anyone I am not implying that some of you have bad taste.

Just as with paintings people like diff erent things, but the most important thing of all is that when you have your garden redesigned you end up with something that

GARDEN DESIGNGOOD INVESTMENT OR WASTE OF MONEY?

you are not just comfortable with, but also something that you can enjoy. A good garden design should refl ect something about yourself, be at one with the environment and meet the needs of your lifestyle.

You might ask how you identify a good designer. To this I would suggest that one of the most important qualities they should exhibit is their ability to listen to you the client and to then interpret this into a design. Th is may sound an easy task but from my experience isn’t something that comes naturally to many. Th ey, like any of us, have a number of preconceived ideas about how things should look and what types of plants and features to include. A good designer however needs to be able to put these aside to ensure that you get what you want, not what they want to impose. Once they have understood your requirement that is the time when their ideas and fl air come into play.

Th at fi rst consultation is so important in setting the parameters of the work required and as a customer if you don’t like what’s been proposed you need to make these views clear. Do not wait until the works are under way as changes then become more diffi cult and potentially expensive. If you are still unhappy be prepared to change designer.

Be prepared. Unless you are happy to give the designer total carte blanche you need to make some notes before hand of your likes, dislikes and requirements. Th ings to think about which may not be immediately obvious to an outsider would include: what the main role of the garden is, do you need an area for children or grandchildren to play, do you want a vegetable or fruit patch, do you want a traditional or contemporary fi nish, do you want plants! If you can collect a few photos of gardens or features that you do like or dislike, this works

Page 81: Weybridge & St Georges Hill Life Dec 2011
Page 82: Weybridge & St Georges Hill Life Dec 2011

When I was young and living in the wilds of Lancashire, our garden was dominated by blackcurrant bushes. In spring the garden looked absolutely fantastic, but this was small consolation for while the blackcurrant sandwiches were scrummy, the rest of the year was spent staring out over complete blandness. Perhaps it was a deep seated desire to escape from a garden dominated by soft fruit that led me to a career in gardens! I am in the enviable position of spending much of my week looking at gardens that people want to change. While the reasons for change are varied, the processes we guide them through are similar, so here’s my insider’s guide to stage one of achieving your dream garden.

Now that winter is really beginning to set in it is the ideal time to sit back and do some real planning ready for the spring. The initial meeting with your landscape gardener is so important. Clients vary from knowing exactly their own requirements to not having a clue, which is fine, but it is always good to have a ‘wish list’ in mind. Structure plays a big part in a garden, so don’t be fooled by abundance of colour in late spring. I try to imagine the view once the leaves are off the trees and the frost has had a go. Would I need Prozac to get

me through January or would I be out there enjoying the maze and winter walk? The element of surprise is paramount in a garden and being unable to see all the boundaries from the outset is often an advantage, making the site seem bigger.

A good designer needs a brief and by asking many questions on lifestyle, plans, ages of family members and the amount of time available for maintenance an outline begins to appear.

Next it’s time for a survey. Ranging from a back of the envelope, paced out sketch to a full survey complete with satellite positioning, logging the exact position of every gnome, or often a cost effective middle ground is to mark the position of everything using a laser level. Don’t forget planning regulations too! Mood boards are great and just as applicable for the garden designer as for the interior designer. They help give a visual of material and plant

combinations and vary from plain, chic or angular through to pastel coloured soft and rustic. Client input at this stage is very useful and should be a lot of fun, get the whole family involved! Armed with all the information, and in my case a jar of pickles (every designer has their own quirks!), a concept plan or two will be created. With plans, mood boards, 3D models and samples, the designer then paints the perfect picture to the client, together with a budget. This can take 2 - 4 weeks depending upon the size and complexity of your project.

The plan is then mulled over, in conjunction with hand drawn sketches and Photoshop impressions and any changes and modifications highlighted. Back to the darkened room with the pickles to finalise the design and a detailed planting plan. All the hard work at this stage will pay dividends!

r & Mrs Burleigh wanted to replace their ageing original steel windows, while preserving their

magnifi cent oak existing wood window frames, but had held the project up because they didn’t know who to go to. Th ey wanted to replicate the appearance of their original metal window frames but at the same time get all the benefi ts of modern double glazing.

Th e Burleighs’ preference was also to deal with an established family business who employ craftsmen as fi tters, with the carpentry skills necessary to carefully replace the individual windows set within timber surrounds.

Th e Heritage Window Company were chosen for the project, because their “Benenden” TM is the slimmest aluminium window available in the market, designed to replicate original metal window frame designs. Tenants have been ‘competing’ with each other as a result, to secure tenancies, sometimes signing up for 18 months or 2 years and in extreme cases even offering over and above the asking price. The stigma that was once attached to renting seems to be a thing of
