Could You AffordTo Live To 100?Over the past three decades, the centenarian population in the United States has grown about

66%, according to the Census Bureau. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a pretty good chance of living to 100 — but it won’t hurt for you to plan for a long retirement. And that means investing for both income and growth.   Many  retirees  depend  on  fixed-rate  vehicles for a good portion of their retirement income — which is a real challenge when interest rates are low. Consequently, when you retire, you’ll need to be aware of the income you can expect from these types of investments in various inter-est-rate environments. While it’s important to invest for income, keep

in  mind  that  many fixed-income  vehicles  pro-vide returns that may not keep up with inflation. To help protect yourself from losing purchasing power, you should also consider some invest-ments that offer growth potential. You may not live to be 100 — but it would be nice to know that you could afford to do so. And investing for income and growth can help.

Recently I have had to ask people to repeat

themselves, especially if there’s a lot of noise. How do I really know if I need hearing aids?

Do  you  have  difficulty  follow-ing along with a conversation in loud  environments?  Do  you  find

yourself asking people to repeat themselves? Do other people tell you the TV is very loud when you are watching? You are not alone. Cur-rent statistics indicate that hearing loss is now the third most prevalent chronic health concern among adults in the US. The best way to know if you need hearing aids is to come in for a hear-ing evaluation. Aging and genetics may con-tribute to a decline in hearing. One of our pa-tients said, “The improvements in my personal and professional life are outstanding! So many of us have our children and grandchildren liv-ing out of town. Understanding conversations over cell phones, Skype or face time is made much clearer us-ing my hearing aids. It is one of the best things I ever did for myself!” Each individual has a unique hearing loss, so it’s best to get an evaluation and course of treatment specific to you.  Steven J.

Last year I had the last of my teeth pulled and dentures made and I am

very unhappy with them. The top denture isn’t bad, but the bottom one won’t stay in place at all, even with adhesive. What can I do? (P.S. I went to one of those places that advertised “guaranteed” dentures, but now they say there’s nothing more they can do!)

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had such a bad experience, but unfortunately your concerns are not too uncommon. While many people can function quite well

with properly fitted dentures, some people have a much more difficult time no matter how well they fit. This is most often the case with lower dentures, especially if there was bone loss from previous gum disease, extensive shrinkage after extractions, or a generally unfavorable shape to the bone. The best solution to your problem can only be determined after a thorough examination and discussion of your particular needs, but most commonly I will recommend Mini Implants which can solidly stabilize a loose denture with much less expense and less procedure than traditional im-plant alternatives. (As far as those places that suppos-edly “guarantee” their dentures, we’ve heard the same complaint from several other patients and are happy to offer a free initial consultation to anyone suffering with a similar problem. Just call my office and men-tion this article.)
