Martín Ncilly was returning to Unsc-lan- d,

Tlritlsh Columbia, arter anprosperMing trip into the

Salmon Uivor district, no reachedtho Columbia river at a point aboutsix miles north of Trail Landing, 1).

C, at noon on that day, and Bclocttnga spot on the bank of the stream atthe foot of Lookout mouutato lie eatdowirto cat his dinner. As he did sohe noticed n huge boulder half buriedin the rami in a dry portion of theriver pot far from whore ho hat.

When he waa through with his repast he shouldered his pick and Miin- -

tered over toward the huge boulder. He examined It at first la a casualway, aad then bis experienced eye teldhini that it was promising lookingquartz, rock. He struck his pick IntoIt several times and dislodged a pieceof the decetnposed rock. Great washis surprise when upon picking up thefragment he saw traces of gold uodcooper, lie walked around tne Douiu- -

cr and knocked off piece after piece, and as he did so his excitement in-

creased with, each succeeding disclosure. In speaking of the circumstancesto the correspondent he said:

"It was some lime before I fullyrealized what a fortune I had discov-ered, but when it dawned on me t lintat last I was a rich wan 1 am afraid Imade such demonstrations 89 wouldjustify any one who mi(iht have seenme In believing that I had lost mysenses. i or several years 1 nave ucen'grubstaked' In prospecting thesemountains without success, and manyIs the lime I Jiavc gone hungry forthe want of the price of something toeat, and can you blame mo for goingnearly crazy when I realized that Iwas no longer poor?"

When Neilly had demonstrated tohis eatUfaclion that tho huge moun-

tain of rock before la aim was full ofrich metal, he proceeded to locate hisdiscovery by posting the usual uoticcstaking in the Rround upon whloh theboulder rested. He then selected a

number of the specimens of rock thathe had chipped on", and putting themin his pocket, he started for Uoseland, arriving there, late in the afternooo. He went to several assnvcrs and leftsome of the rock to lie assayed.

The next inornipa; one assaycr's re-

port showed that the ore containedD3 in cold to the ton, besides being

rich iu copper. Tho other two assays

showed Í47 and $."8 in fold and alsocopper.

From the position of the boulder, lying as it does on the dry bed of theriver all by itself ami at the foot ofLookout mountain, which rears itscrest several thousand feet up iu theair, it is evideutthat at some periodthis hiifje body of rock has become dis-

lodged from the mountain and rolleddowu with fc:trfiil momentum to thepoint where it now rests.

The boulder, as near a cau he es-

timated, cent:; ins in the neighbor-hood of 2O.C0O tons of rock. As yetKcilly is undecided what he will do

with his boulder. He says he may

conclude to have it mined and shippedto the Trail smelter for reduction, orhe may decide to disposo of it to some

syndicate er capitalist for a good roundfigure. He has set do price on it, andsays he will not until be has had timeto think the matter over.

CAPTURE OF MURDERERS- -

The Las Vegas Optic of a recentdate ha Ibis timely article, whichahould be carefully reml by the sher-iffs of the territory;

There is not the esprit do corpsamong some of the sheriffs of NewMexico which so largely characterizestbe same bodies iu the states. In al-

most any state should a murder becommitted the sheriff of the countyin which the olTenu taku place, feelsin hnnor bound to secure the culprit. He feels also that his official reputa-tion is at Ktake; and I' he fails to ap-

prehend tho murderer and is com-

pelled to call on the governor for helpin the way of cxtia reward, he ishumiliated in bis own opinion and isplaced at a disadvantage in the opin-

ion of others. There Is a pride of of-lic-e

which leads tho different sheriffsto endure every possible hardship andto put forth every conceivable effortra.ucr than that a criminal should es-

cape. The violation jof the law in anycounty is a personal offense to the of-

ficers in that county. The result is

that but few rewards aro offered forthe apprehension of criminals andbut few escape arrest on the commis-sion of a crime.

In New Mexico It Is not so. On thecontrary, it bas been vtry largely thecare that If the crime was committedat some distance from the county sent,or at some remoto part of the county,no effort would be made for his appre-hension, unless the governor offered areward. In that caso a private de-

tective, or perhaps a kberhTof anothercounty, might put forth orno clTort toearn some money. . It is to bo hopedthat the shcrilTs of líew Mexico willat once awake to a seine ct t heir du-

ties, and that it will no longer bethe shame of the territory thnt thegovernor must offer a reward for thoapprehension of nearly every manwho commits a murder.

Two Lives Saved.Mrs. riiocba Thomas, of Junction

Verdicts of Grant county juriesEle decent citizens a (treat respect forthe way law in en furred In Mexico.

Tun Sentinel has suspended ow ingto the attempt of the receiver or thedefunct First national bank of SilverCity to realize en an asset.

O.vi of the juror In the Iavenprtrtcase announced on his examinationthat he would never convict a man ofmurder In the first decree when thepenally was death. It needed thatkind of jurors to acijult lareciport.

Tin; people of O'rant county havenot got much of ft kick coining

the wjrtlrrs do hot catch uiur-lri-

Indians. The example set bythe Jural officer is not a brilliant one. They eatch few murderers, and thosethey do catch are turned looe by theJury.

It now begins to look as though aaoldicr had come Into this countrywho hud a desire to get the renegadeIndians. Col. Sfniuer Is after themhot blocks ami says he will keep afterthem till be gets. them. Arrangemetits are being perfected which willenable the troops to follow them intoMexico.

If a man wished to commit, a niurdcr in Grant county and wanted to doCt in such a manner as to be convictedof it by a Grant county jury he wouldhave to consult a lawyer as ta the cx-c- t

mode of procedure necessary tolie foüowed to accomplish this object, aud we doubt if any Giant countylawyer can advise a client so he cankill a Diati and he convicted of murder by a Grant county Jury. Theonly man who has been punished formurder in tbis county in rscent yearstook no chances with a Jury but pleadguilty, and by bringing a strung influence to bear on Judge Henderson succeeded In getting hung. It was aClear case of suicide.

Tim Liukiial has received the firstannual catalogue Issusd by the NewMexico school of piiues. Judgingfrom this publication the .school isgoing to play an important part inthe future of New Mexico. It hastwo courses, one in mine engineeringarjd one )n chemistry ami metallurgyand these two subjects appear to betreated exhaustively. In additionthere are special courses for the

of people who have notthe time to take the extensive course, but who desire to learn some of themysteries iuvolved in the great e

of mining. One of these coursestreats the subject of assaying and itpromises to cever the subject com-pletely In a year. Another specialt'mirse is called the "Prospector's

'Course," and we predict it will becomeyery popular. It U for the beuelit ofprospectors, miners, mine fofmen as-

sayed and others who arc sufficientlyInterested in mining to desire to take8 course of study. The subjects cov-

ered are chemistry, mine talngy, geul-pgy- ,

ore concentration an. I assaying"This course commences on the llrstMonday in January and lasts eightweeks. The fwes are ill), and in

the student has to hoard hiin-Fel- f

The cost of the course is about thesame as one big drunk, and there area great liiuny iitiiiers in the territorywjja can well afford to forego onedrunk for such a purpose.

It will be remembered that somelive years ngo there was considerabletrouble up In the Pino Ciénega coun-try over cattle rustling, and that theHall boys, whether rightly or wronglywas never proved, were given creditfor having a hand in it. In the fall of1891 Bob and Dick Hall started to godown into Arizona on a bunting trip. They were seen just before they gotto Ash Spring and were never seen af-

terwards. Their friends claiuicd.theybad been murdered and their wivesmad a long but unsucpessful searchfor their bodies. It was the generalopinion that a committee of cattle-men had performed the vlgllaucu act,and bad dono it so tborougly that notrace of the boil les ever was found.Mrs. Robert Hull had troubla withher husband's family and this quarrelproduced another killing. Tom Hall, her brqther-iu-law- , killed her father,Tpm Burleson. Hall was admittedpn ,hc grouud of self defense. Mrs.Jilehard Hall married again and isliving near Georgetown. The Hallfamily moved from the Tine Ciénegapountry down south of here near theMexican ll'iu. Now comes word froaithe Ash Spring country, that youngJohn Parks, while hunting rattle nearAsh Springs, discovered the remainsof two men who had been killed andtheir bodies burned. DISTRICT COUHT.

District court has been In sessionover at Sliver City.

Many prominent citizens ara out ofthe territory on business djrlog thetime the grand Jury Is In session.

The case of Thomas Woods chargedwith murdering William Grudggens,on a change oí venue from Socor-ro county, was tried, aud, as was ex-

pected, Woods was noiutttcd on thegrounds of eel f defense.

All the tax cases wcro set for Tues-day, but were not reached as the courtwas busy with the Davenport case.

The Sunday violation cases aro setfor next Wednesday.

The following persons have paidtheir taxes aad the suits against themfor the collection of taxes have beendismissed, viz: John W. Chenowith,Worniscr & Co., Cook's Peak MiningCo., estate of Idus Fielder, Walter B.Duffy, Rice & Doyle, Standard MiningCo., Julia Black, John I. Foster andthe Mechanic savings bank of Wester-ly, and John B. Foster.

The grand Jury refused to IndictBosworth and Parker, who were InJail on the charge of conspiracy to killP. H. McDcrmott, and they wereturned loose.

The case against ,Wm. C. Daven-port, charged with murder, was commenced last Saturday. It will be re-

membered that last July Davenportquarrelled with Sig Wcisl at Carlisle, because Wcis! remonstrated with himfor disturbing a sick man; that Dav-enport left Weisl's store procured asixshooter, came back and, renewedthe quarrel; that when Wels'l sawDavenport was armed he started forhis own gun whereupon Davenportshot him, killing him instantly. Asis common In murder cases in Grantcounty the Jury brought la a verdictof not guilty.

The case of Harry Styles, chargedwith themurdcr of O'Ncil, near RedRock, is billed to follow the Daven-port case.

VOTES.

Lordsburg and the adjacent countrynever was tetter represented a, thecounty capital than at this term ofcourt.

Dick Roberts, foreman of the crandJury, and B. B. Ownby have been piloted around the city by Hy Fisher.Fishtr has had lota of trouble flndintrsoft places for the boys to walk, sothey woulJ not hurt their feet.

John KcCabe and Joe Taylor ar-

rived Suuday and immediately triedto hire Hy Fisher as a guide.

J. A. Leahy went over Sunday totake care of John McCabe.

- B. B. Ownby, a prominent lawyer ofLordsburg, Is looking after the Interests of his clients In court. Eau'le.The Eagle if mistaken. Mr. Ownbyis not a lawyer. He is an honest man.

Martin Mullen of Cold Spiing andthe Hon. James Tracy, of Deming,

of Grant county, have beenleading butterfly lives. The

is a liot one and bis sido partneris not slow.

A week or so ago Collector Lairdwent to New York on business. Assoon as the grand Jury met it was ru-

mored that he was a defaulter. TheLiHEiUL received word from Demingthat Laird was short í.2,000 and hadskipped out. There were several rea-sou- s

fur believing this to be untrue:Laird has held the important posilionof collector several times and themnever before has been any rumor ofcrookedness connected with his name. While this was very satisfying to hisfriends his enemies pointed out thatmost embe..lers bud enjoyed goodreputations up to the time they tied.Again, it was remembered that thecounty owed Laird $10,000; that hisbooks were checked up by the treasurer every month; that but little cashIs being taken in at this lime of theyear, so the work" would have extend-ed over several months; that in th!case he would have required tho assistance of his deputy, J. J. Sheridan, and ho had nut, skipped. Then camefurther news from. Deming to lua ef-

fect that it was an o'd affair that hadrecently come to light, that EditorSheridan of the Enterprise had foundthe missing county records and theyshowed it was not Whlu-hlll- , but hispredecessor, Laird, who was a default-er. This sounded plausible until Itwas remembered that the records disappeared at ths latter end of Whitc-blll'- s

administration, und that'CharlieDavenport would never have hid thosebooks If they had showed any such astate of aiTiiirs. Then came the newsfrom Silver City that Deputy CollectorSheridan had denounced the story asa lie, had pointed to the fact thatw.ithln a few days $(,000 had beenturned over to tho county treasurer, and invited the grand Jury to comethemselves or scud an expert to ex-

amine the books In the collector's of-

fice. Laird's enemies will have tospring a belter story than this to ruinhim In the estimation of those whoare acquainted with his reputationfor honesty aud bis ability as i'.ii ac-

countant.

Lloyd Payue was In ths city thefirst of t lie week, returning to Cliftonafter his trip to the Gila hot springs, looking In bettev health than be hasfor years.
