    Compensation to all employees throughout theState during any pei-iod of incapacity for work,whatever the cause or circumstances of the icapacity,and notwithstanding an absence of insurance cover.

    THE Comnussioner of Police, acting under the authority conferred by section 9 ofthe Police Act, 1892, and with the approval of the Minister for Police, has amendedthe regulations made under thc said Act, as pnblished in the Government Gazette onthe 4th day of December, 1944, and aniended by notices published in the GovernmentGazette on the 14th day of May, 1945, and the 21st day of March, 1947, in themanner set forth in the Schedule hereunder.

    care of property held it all Police Stations, whether taken from a prisoner orotherwise :--

    Searching of Prisoners.The reserve sergeant or sergeant in charge for tIme time being, os senior

    reserve constable, will see that a male prisolici-, before being placed in the cell,is thoroughly searched in his presence by the arresting constable, who will, atthe time inform the prisoner of the amount of money and other pioperty foundon him, and then hand it to the reserve sergeant or senior reserve constable. Thelatter will then check time l.)i'OPerty and enter the same correctly described in theCharge Book- iil the .Prisouers ' Property Book, and place it ni property enve-lopes, nppropriateiy niarked for identification. He will then sign the Prisoners"Property Book. Time senior arresting constable, after checking entries of moneyand sundries, will sign tIme entry. When making entries in the Charge Book inregard to prisoners' property, full parlieulars heed only be recorded in respectof property of a valuable nature (e.g., money, jewellery, pawn tickets, bankhooks, pension cards, etc.) ; articles of little value should be referred to as''sundries.'' In time Prisoncm-s' Property Book full details of all items shouldbe recorded, comnnieneing with time entries as written in the Charge Book, andplaced in the same sequence, a detailed list 'being recorded of all sundries.

    No constable will, unless it is unavoidable, search a prisoner withoutimnotimer member of the Force being present.

    Violent Prisoner.If a prisoner is violent and objects to the arresting constable searching

    hini, the reserve sergeant or senior reserve or other constable will conduct tImesearch in the presence of the arresting constable. All such property is to remainin the custody of the Police until time prisoner has been either discharged, acquittedor sentenced.

    Disposi of Prisoner's Property.The property itself is to be sent to time place of trial (if prisoner is

    committed) p-e4os to the day appointed for trial, so that it may be accessibleeither (if necessary) for time purpose of identification, or to be returned to thepmmmcr if discharged, om- delivered to the sheriff or gaoler with mm copy of thj,einventory if tIme be convicted.

    Care is to be taken that property necessary for time purpose of identi-fication remains as much as possible in the hands of the same member of theForce, so as to avoid rendering the evidence of identity cousphicated or embarras-sing.

    If time prisoner is discharged, the property is to be restored to hins willsthe exception of any portions necessary to be retained as proofs in any futureproceedings, or ally portions proved to belong to another person, and which maybe delivered to such person, on his indemnifying the member of the Force, sheriffor gaoler agonist any proceedings of the prisoner. It will be the duty of themember of the Force, sheriff or gaoler to inform the prisoner of the amounttaken from him according to the duplicate inventory.

    If the prisoner be convicted of an indictable offence and sentenced toimprisonment, the property found in his possession and seized by the Policeis to be delivered to the sheriff or gaoler.

    In cases of summary jurisdiction a similar course is to be pursued beforeand after conviction ci- discharge, as before and after trial.

    When property is handed over to the sheriff or gaoler, one copy of theinventory should accompany it. On the other copy of the inventory the sheriffor gaoler's receipt for the property should be taken, and it should be retained ijvthe Police.

    When a prisoner's property is returned to him by the Police, Isis reed tfor it should be taken on one copy of the inventory.

    (ii) A prisoner nay, by written order, assign to any person for his defenceor other purpose any propert taken front him which is not required for evidence,nor in any way connected with the charge against him, nor suspected tounlawfully obtained.

    (1) Persons of known respectability arrested for sonic trifling misdemeaiwui,toed not be searched, but should be requested to products such property as theymay have on their persons, and should, if possible, be placed in a cell by them-sd yes,

    Correction of lfntry.Should it become lseecssarv to correct an entry macic in the Prisoners'

    Dangerous Weapons or Poisons.Unless obviously unnecessary, the prisoner's boots, socks, and alt clothing

    should be removed anti carefully examined to guard against the concealment ofloaded arnis, knives, razors or other dangerous weapons or poisons.

    Dangerous Prisoners.Braces, belts, neckties, or bootiaces should tie taken frous dangerous

    prisoners or prisoners charged with serious offences, to prevent them doing thent-selves all injury. Pencils should be taken from prisoners to l)l'eveflt thicum defac-ing walls, etc.

    Spectacles.in the case of prisoners hcsviag epeetatslee, there is no need for th

    Police to take. possession of such articles unless the prisoner is violent or drunkor there is reason to believe the pnisonci' may injure himself w'ith thc glasses.or there is some other good reason why the articles should he held by thic Police.In cases where spectacles are taken possession of, they should be returned totile owners as soon as the necessity for the Police to hold the articles litii passed.

    Searching of Male Prisoners on Transfer.When male prisoners are being transferred trusts one station to another,

    or to a gaol, or for appearance at any Court, those who are charged with seriousoffences should be carefully searched immediately prior to their removal.

    Prisoners charged with minor offeisces need not be searched when hcimsg sotransferred, sinless they have Petit scarcerated with others against whoni seriouscharges have been laid, and it is suspected or hichieveci that they may have lettersor other property on their person foi' conveyance to friends or relatives of suchother prisoners. TIse cells and exercise yards from which the prisoners lire removed,should be carefully examined as the offenders are leaving in order to ascertainwhether tiny object therein has been rsmovcd, damaged, or disturbed in any way.(Whenever any person charged is sentenced to imprisonment or remanded, ordetained for ally purpose, the officer chicirged with the safe keeping of such prisoner,

    Searching of Females.The services of a female, if necessary, are to be procured to search a

    female prisoner, and the Reserve Sergeant shall be in readiness to assist theformer if required.

    In the Perth or Freinantle districts, the Police Matron, or a woman constableshould he used.

    Female to be taken to Headquarters.in the Perth or Fremautle districts any female taken to a suburban

    Station should be removed in the Police patrol car to the headquarters Station assoon is practicable.

    Female Drug AddictsSearching of.All prostitutes and female offenders who are suspected drug addicts,

    when arrested arc to be dealt with on the lines indicated in paragraphs 11 and 12of these Rules. Such offenders should he carefully searched by a matron or femalesearcher immediately after being charged, us order to ascertain whether they arein possession of cocaine or other dangerous drugs.

    The Reserve Sergeant or Sergeant in charge of the Station for the timebeing, will at all times be personally responsible for all money, valuables and otherproperty held at the Statiois, or received at the Station during Ins tour of duty,whether sneli property is taken from a prisoner or otherwise.

    He will see that a complete record of such property is correctly enteredin the books supplied for that purpose and that cash, jewellery and other valuablePi'operty is locked in the safe, strong box or strong room. On being relieved, liewill hand over to the relieving officer and obtain the necessary acknowledguient.

    When the property of a prisoner or any part of it is impounded by anymember of the C.I.B. an entry to that effect is to be made iii red ink in theappropriate books and such property secured as aforementioned.

    If the officer concerned requires ike property of any prisoner or partthereof, for any purpose, the necessary entry should he made and the same signedby the officer taking the property and initialled by the officer handing over.

    Those Rules or such portion of t],eni as arc applicable shall apply to allStations throughout the State.
