West Salem ~ Putting the Unity in Community

Since 1782!

A N e w W a y t o M e e t As West Salem continues growing as a vibrant and thriving

downtown community, it is easy to get sidetracked by

complex issues such as zoning, housing, and general

ordinance compliance. While these issues are important to

the long-term stability of our neighborhood, they do not

directly nurture and cultivate the deep sense of community

that is so integral to promoting our organic growth and

development. The recent Tree Project and 2012 Garden

Tour showed us very plainly that our community is full of

ready, willing, and able participants when they are

presented with a task or event they believe in. It is in this

spirit that we would like to move in a different direction

with our monthly association meetings.

Rather than the monthly meetings being used as a forum to

conduct “business” or air grievances, we would like to

focus on building community with potluck hors d’oeuvres,

a quick community safety update by one of our local patrol

Playing for more than 20 years, Front Page Band is a high energy R&B group ready to play your favorite old school tunes from the 80s & 90s.

The Readers’ Forum Dear West Salem,

I came to you a bit battered thirteen years ago in March. You took me in and nurtured me and taught me what it means to give back to community. I'd never known more than one or two people in neighborhoods where I lived before. In West Salem I can easily knock on 100+ doors and know the names of the people who opened them. And they would know me!!

My leaving you is bittersweet. I have sworn over the years never to marry again, never to leave my little home on Broad Street that I turned into my own little sanctuary, never, never. . . well, watch how you say never. I've met my life partner, my best friend, and married him. Charlie and I will be moving out to Old Salisbury Road - hopefully this month. But though I will not live among you, you will always be in my heart, and you will always be my friends. I love you West Salem!

Meet Anne Murray. Now we must say goodbye. Temporarily. Anne is a professor at Pfeiffer University in Charlotte, but calls Laurel Street in West Salem home. She has some news to share with her neighbors…

I have been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship that is paying for my trip to

Bucharest, Romania where I will teach Organizational Behavior and Business

Communications to Romanian graduate students. The good news is that I will

be able to teach in English! I will be gone September through July, 2013 and

am very excited about this opportunity to live and work in another country. I

have been learning a little bit of Romanian, so if you see me in the

neighborhood, ask me to show off what I have learned. Should you wish, you

can follow my adventures on my blog:

http://ayearinromania.blogspot.com/ which has been started,

but will be much more interesting once I get there and start including

pictures.

It appears that the person who will be renting the lower half of my house is a

woman from India who is coming here to study, also on a Fulbright grant! I

sincerely hope the neighborhood will make her feel welcome!

We’ll be following your adventures in Romania, Anne. Noroc! (a Romanian wish for Good Luck!)

2012 West Salem

Garden Tour

The West Salem Garden Club would like to thank everyone involved in making the 2012 West Salem Garden Tour a success! Around 190 people (including volunteers) toured around our neighborhood to see some amazing gardens on display. $4333 was raised from sponsors, ticket sales & raffles. We were able to net over $2000 to put towards the improvement of Granville Park!

Our heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors & volunteers…
