Revd John Longuet-Higgins for the West of Severn Benefice: consisting of Ashleworth, Corse, Maisemore, Hartpury, Hasfield, Staunton and Tirley.

9 days in May: Thy Kingdom Come:

Vicar’s Bit John Longuet-Higgins

10th

– 19th

May: Nine days: What is so special? Well, across the world Christians are waiting and praying. We shall be too. For whom? For what? The Holy Spirit and the coming kingdom. On Ascension Day, Thursday 10

th May, Jesus

ascended to heaven and on earth we pray ‘thy kingdom come’. During the novena, we shall be praying daily in all our churches:

10th May 7.00pm Thursday Ascension Day Tirley Church 11

th May 8.15am Friday Hartpury Church

12th May 8.15am Saturday Corse Church

13th May Sunday services

14th May 8.15am Monday Hasfield Church

15th May 8.15am Tuesday Ashleworth Church

16th May 8.15am Wednesday Staunton Church

17th May 8.15am Thursday Corse Church

18th May 8.15am Friday Hartpury Church

19th May 8.15am Saturday Maisemore Church

And at the end of our praying, the Holy Spirit comes. So we can more effectively ‘gather together’ on May 20th for Pentecost, this year we are holding just two services, a 9.30am Pentecost Communion Service at Ashleworth and the 11.30am Pentecost Family Praise, followed by a BBQ (‘baptised by fire’). We are making a special effort to make this 11.30am service a wonderful family occasion. It might not have passed your notice that on Saturday 19

th May there is the Royal

Wedding and the FA Cup final. To add to the festivities, there is a Festivall night at Maisemore Church (part of the diocese Festivall initiative). The stars are the Leadon Vale Community Choir and ex Gloucester Cathedral Nick Bury giving a talk on ‘Festivals’. The evening will end with light food and drink and community singing. The evening is free with donations to Maisemore Church (see Page 20 of this magazine). On Thursday 24th May, at 7pm at Staunton Church, there will be a celebration of bells. The local church bell ringing will be followed by a concert by the Cranham Handbell Ringers including classical, folk, spiritual, sea shanties and wedding music. There will be a talk on the history of bell ringing. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free, with donations to Staunton church. This event will be interesting and entertaining for both experienced and non-experienced church bell-ringers and hand bell-ringers. The evening will encourage us to get involved in both types of bell-ringing (see Page 9 of this magazine).

Returning to the Waiting in Prayer theme, on Saturday 5th

May 3-5pm at the Rectory, I’m holding a social gathering to share news of the Family Development Minister. This initiative has the potential to transform the way we ‘do’ church in the Benefice. It follows the Messy Wedding event at Staunton and Corse School, after school on Wednesday 2

nd May.

Finally, with the arrival of Steve Godsell in July as the Benefice curate, I’m keen to run with him an autumn Confirmation Group. If you are aware of anyone, whatever age, who might be interested, please contact me on 700965.

News from Hartpury Methodist Church As you might have heard, we have been having some renovations and refurbishing done to the kitchen at chapel. During this time we have not been able to continue with our Saturday lunches. It is possible that we will reopen for Lunches (12 - 2pm, first Saturday of every month) on May 5th. Please check our noticeboard and in local shops as the time comes nearer, as we will advertise our plans as they develop. Everyone is welcome to the Saturday Lunches - plenty of good food to eat and conversations to be had: we’d love to see more local people coming along to join the enthusiastic regulars. We have plans in the pipeline for more events to be held in the schoolroom when we have completed planned decoration of this room - watch this space and keep an eye open for June 26th. Once all the work is completed, we plan to hold a grand relaunch of our shiny new, comfortable and welcoming premises to everyone. Our church services will continue as normal - 10.30am every Sunday. This is advertised in the other parish magazine and on our noticeboard in Hartpury.

Ann Williams Sadly our dear friend Ann will not be with us to celebrate the relaunch. Ann was an enthusiastic helper at Saturday Lunch and a tireless breath of air and sunshine, as she brought her infectious joie de vivre to our fellowship. We said au revoir to Ann at her funeral service on 27 March when the church and schoolroom were packed to overflowing with friends and relatives wishing to show their love and appreciation for a lovely lady who shared so much in the life of the church. Ann was often assisted by Martyn in doing things for the church and we send our love and condolences to him and to the family.

Affordable Housing at Nup End Redcliffe Homes Development

Mike Fellows, Chair of Ashleworth Parish Council, has penned this brief article in response to questions raised regarding affordable housing. ‘Broadly speaking, affordable housing schemes aim to make cheaper homes available for people who can’t afford to buy or rent at market rates. The government defines affordable housing as ‘social rented, affordable rented and intermediate housing, provided to specified eligible households whose needs are not met by the market’. But, in a briefing paper released in August 2017, the House of Commons Library said there is ‘a great deal of ambiguity’ in the way the term ‘affordable’ is used in housing - there is no standard definition and approaches differ between local areas. http://researchbriefings.parliament.uk/ResearchBriefing/Summary/CBP-7747 Affordable Housing at Nup End comprises 14 units, as follows: 4 x 1 bed apartments 7 x 2 bed houses (2 of which will be shared ownership) 3 x 3 bed houses (2 of which will be shared ownership). A site layout is available at: http://publicaccess.tewkesbury.gov.uk/online-applications/files/7B9BF03F1943642A2AC0864D629E6FF0/pdf/15_00965_OUT-S106_OBLIGATIONS_-_COLOUR_BLOCK_PLAN__A1-662043.pdf The affordable housing will be managed by Merlin Housing Association. For further information, please contact Tewkesbury Borough Council Housing Officer John Bryant on 01684 272162 and he should be able to explain eligibility and how to express interest. The Bleak House Chronicles

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” – Henry Ford

You are never too old to be surprised or indeed shocked. Now that the evenings are longer, I took a stroll with my beloved, Mrs P (who is not to be trifled with), along the byways adjacent to Bleak House. At first, I thought the screech was a bird call but it got louder and louder and more frequent. Then there were two separate screeches coming from a ditch and, when I went over to get a closer look from whence the noise was coming, I saw to my horror that a rat and a hedgehog were locked in battle. I always thought that hedgehogs rolled into a ball when attacked but this one was giving as good as it got. Although it was over in probably no more than three minutes, it seemed like an eternity as I watched. It just goes to show that you learn something new every day.

An even greater surprise was to see my Mother, The Dowager, riding a motorised pace bike at the Commonwealth Games in Australia. She was expected to ride off the track when the set pace had been reached but it seems her competitive spirit took over and, as a result, she got through to the quarter finals before being disqualified following a dope test. She next sprung up sitting by the long jump take off board, holding a red flag in her right hand and a white flag in her left. She was relieved of her duties when Elsie, her trusty lieutenant from The Dowager Crew, waved from the stands which then resulted in the Games’ favourite for long jump being red flagged, which the sand pit rakers took for a foul jump. TV replays suggested that it was a new world record but the landing mark was raked over before it could be officially measured. Apparently the Dowager’s suggestion that worse things happened at sea did little to calm the situation which ended in the long jumper being taken to hospital with a suspected broken nose. Mrs P is not the only one who should not be trifled with. I thought that Mother would be deported for these incidents but apparently the Australian Government exercised professional etiquette and my dearest Mother is now a coach for the Australian Boxing Team and skills coach for their national cricket XI. There is certainly never a dull moment at Bleak House!

For those who are interested in the outcome of the rat/hedgehog set-to, I can reveal that the hedgehog won on points. Boom! Boom!

John Price Wishing it was all true

News from the Woodpeckers: A New Membership System!

As we transition from the football season to the cricket season, we're also migrating onto a new membership system. This is all part of our desire to increase potential future grant funding for enhancements to the Woodpeckers Sports & Social Club, by demonstrating we have a great many active members. Some of you may well have received an e-mail already!

You can now apply to become a new member through our website. Our existing members will also be able to pay for their annual memberships through our website, along with receiving reminders when renewals are due. We have the ability to issue membership cards too, should we feel it necessary in future.

As a matter of admin, when you pay your cricket or football membership you will automatically become an individual member (we'll update the system once payment is received) so you can ignore those emails! If you'd like to know more or update your membership details, visit: https://membermojo.co.uk/woodies. Alternatively if you're struggling, don't hesitate to contact Amy at: [email protected].

I hope you will all find the new system to be a real improvement and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Amy Williamson for all her hard work. Rupert Barnes [email protected] 07966 060304

NEXT SCREENING – Saturday, 12 MAY 18 Following the successful second screening, where 56 people came to the performance of ‘Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool’, the next Ashleworth Cinema screening will be on Sat 12 May 18, at Ashleworth Memorial Hall. Doors open at 7pm. The film will be ‘Hidden Figures’:

Three brilliant African-American women at NASA -- Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) -- serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn (Glen Powell) into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race and galvanized the world.

Tickets on sale (£5) from Ashleworth Post Office. Look out for posters and leaflets around the village. For more information, please contact either Maggie Mitra on 700098 or Caroline Saunders on 700742, but not the two characters below! ASHLEWORTH SHOW – 1ST SEP 2018 Your Ashleworth Show Committee has begun planning for this year’s Show, to be held on 1st Sep. The preliminary schedule for classes is now on the Ashleworth website: http://www.ashleworth.btck.co.uk/AshleworthVillageShow The basic format will remain the same as last year, with a large central arena for the main attractions, surrounded by stalls held by community groups and by commercial stall holders. The main exhibition marquee will be integral with the café area again. Other activities and entertainment will be fitted around these. We have yet to decide upon attractions, so if anyone has any contacts for suitable possibilities, please let us know. We have also agreed that it would be good to have a few more community stalls, so, again, if you have an idea for an activity or small competition and would like to run it (it needn’t take all afternoon, unless you wanted it to), please get in touch. We would still like to have a new committee member to coordinate car parking/entrances, and one to coordinate the stalls. Let us know if you can help. If you know of anyone who would like to reserve a stall to sell items, please contact me in the first instance (details below). We will be increasing our use of social media this year and are looking at having an online competition for under 12s using snapchat or similar. Look out for notifications. The caption competition will also be online this year. Raffle prizes are always much appreciated. Jackie Eardley does a marvellous job of collecting these, so please contact her on 702012 if you have something to donate. Our next full meeting is on 12 May – ideas and suggestions always welcome, via the Secretary, Steph Collier on 700667. Many thanks for your contributions and support. Corse and Staunton of Yesteryear Tony Fardon and I are continuing research into the history of our area with

the intention of publishing a follow-up book to Volume 1. We are

constantly seeking photographs of times gone by and would appreciate the

loan of any you may have. We also would ask for any articles or memories

of events on any aspect of the local area to help create an archive of our

history. If you can assist, we would be most grateful. If you have any ideas

or small snippet of stories ,please get in touch.

In this regard, Andrew Houldey is writing the history of the Staunton and

Corse Football Club which will celebrate its 100th Anniversary next year,

2019. He has offered us an edited version for inclusion our in Volume 2. He

has this photograph of the team dated 1952 or 1953.

Andrew can name Doug Preece, who is fourth from left in the back row,

Tony Saint is in the middle of the front row, Joe Wells is the goalkeeper

and Zera Wells/Hampton who was the Club Secretary.

Can you assist Andrew by supplying any other names of the team members

please? He would also be grateful for any further memories, stories, names

or history of the Club you may have. We will pass the details onto Andrew.

We appreciate your help: thank you.

ASHLEWORTH MEMORIAL HALL

Ashleworth Memorial Hall was refurbished in 2010 and is a warm and light hall in the centre of Ashleworth village, with dedicated parking directly across the road. Together with the shop and Post Office, the school and Woodpeckers Sports and Social Club, the Hall is a wonderful resource for the village. In recent years the Hall has been used for a wide range of events such as children’s and special occasion birthday parties, formal presentations, wedding receptions, funeral wakes and musical events. Our next major event is a special wine-tasting on Friday 4 May, starting at 7pm.

We are a registered charity and managed exclusively by volunteers on the committee with other helping hands and we are always looking for new recruits. We only meet five or six times a year, so the time commitment is not too onerous. Please visit: http://ashleworthmemorialhall.btck.co.uk/, and http://ashleworthmemorialhall.btck.co.uk/RegularEvents page to find out about weekly social groups and classes.

If you have a query about hiring the Hall or would like more details about any of our regular events, please use the details above or the 'Contact Us' link on the web site. Tony Eardley, Chair, Ashleworth Memorial Hall Committee Tel: 702012 Email: [email protected]

Ashleworth and Hasfield WI Notes from meeting 3rd April 2018 Speaker: Matthew Gacek ‘Maintaining a Cornish Jewel’

In 2001, Matthew and his wife undertook a life changing experience and moved from Sussex to Cornwall to a completely new life. After answering a small advert in a newspaper requiring a couple to work in Caerhays Castle in Cornwall, Matthew was shocked to be accepted. They sold up and went, with little experience of looking after a large country estate. It was a decision they did not regret. Matthew became an undergardener and, what he lacked in horticultural expertise, he made up for in enthusiasm. He and his wife certainly enjoyed the 120 acres of idyllic surroundings and Matthew had to get used to the back breaking labour after a life in the classroom.

When the estate was designed, it was a time when plant hunters went off to the Himalayas to collect plants, sending them back to England in the hope of making them look natural species here in the country estates. The gardens house the national collection of magnolias, with over 600 species growing there. In Japan, magnolias are mostly white but in England the majority grown are pink. The magnolia is a fascinating and ancient plant: fossils have been discovered which are 1 million years old.

The gardens are renowned for their spectacular showy camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons. Matthew advised phoning before visiting in case a biting east wind has caused the flowers to spoil.

Other notable species found there include Drimys Winteri or Winters Bark which contains citric acid and was chewed by sailors to avoid scurvy. And Lithocarpus Pachyphyllus (or stone oak) which takes 2 years to germinate. There are many varieties of tree ferns which thrive in the microclimate of Cornwall. Plants are put in a special nursery area and, if they survive after 3 years, they will be transplanted into the main garden: there is no molly-coddling of plants.

Tea is now produced from the tea camellia and sold, the foliage carefully harvested and measured before being shipped up to London on the night train for Covent Garden florists. The castle, built 200 years ago designed by John Nash, was used to film the 1980s version of Du Maurier’s Rebecca (a variety of rhododendron is named Rebecca) and it is now a popular wedding venue. Highland cattle are kept in the grounds and are popular with visitors—from a distance.

Matthew openly admitted gardening was not his forte and the other gardeners were amazed he’d been hired. He was soon relegated to the visitor centre where he was of more use chatting to tourists, organising tours and enthusing about the estate and its history. He much preferred this to clipping 3 miles of laurel hedging or rowing out to the 3 islands on the lake to strim the pampas grass. The gardens are open to the public 2 months a year and Matthew convinced us they are well worth a visit. http://www.caerhays.co.uk/ Carole Bowe Find us on Facebook: https://en-gb.facebook.com/Ashleworth-Hasfield-WI-716607531753434/ Next Meeting 1st May 2018 Speaker: The Bard of Gloucestershire Radio, Peter Wyton 7.30pm New members welcome

Severnsiders Senior Citizens Club

We started the meeting with a very brief Treasurer’s Report from Alan

Tickner. He announced that our accounts are ‘all in the black’, which is

very reassuring. We will have a proper breakdown of the figures at a later

date.

Sue Woodthorpe then took over the proceedings and announced the sad

news of the death of Claire, one of our members. Everyone will remember

that she liked to dance, whenever we had any music playing. We send our

sympathy to the family.

We then heard that Rosemary, who normally cooks our lunch, had

somehow managed to injure her arm and was sporting a natty splint. Many

thanks to Mandy, who stepped in to assist in the kitchen. No wonder

Rosemary looked so cheerful and tucked into the meal of pork and leek

casserole. This was followed by an array of puddings to tempt everyone’s

sweet tooth. We were given a choice of three different trifles, fruit jelly, bun and butter pudding and a lovely pavlova. Very tasty! Then we enjoyed a

nice cup of tea while Lynn shouted out the numbers for the raffle. She did

so well that I did wonder if she is in training to be a bingo caller!

After this we welcomed Cate Morris who was our Guest Speaker. Cate

has obviously mastered the art of multitasking, as she chatted away about

her family and life on the farm, whilst at the same time assembling two

beautiful flower arrangements. Cate took a City & Guilds course in Tex-

tiles and Flower Arranging, so it is no surprise that she says she was ‘roped

in’ for the Deerhurst Flower Festival. Cate is currently training several

young girls, some of whom will be going to Malvern Spring Show. I am sure

that they will do her proud.

We were each given a raffle ticket and at the end two lucky people won the

arrangements that Cate had just assembled in front of us. Janet Dance was

the winner of a small arrangement which was in an old flowered cup and

saucer and featured delicate pink rosebuds. This was my favourite.

Heather Parker was the delighted recipient of a larger basket of greenery

and flowers which was complete with a ribbon and colourful decorative

eggs to finish it off, as it was Easter time.

Well done Cate! She can come at any time.

This was a very pleasant way to spend the day. If you would like to join us,

then please ring Sue Woodthorpe on 01452 780610.
