Sandvik DP1500i Punches Through Hawaiian Lava ScapeOver many eons volcanoes have erupted

from the floor of the Pacific Ocean andformed the Hawaiian Islands, which slowlyrise from the bottom. Today, those moun-tains of volcanic rock are a boom forBlasting Technology Inc., a drilling andblasting company that is hard at work oneach of the major islands in the archipelago, operating a fleet of seven SandvikConstruction surface top hammer drill rigstapping into this exotic land’s solidified lava. Blasting Technology began operations in

1987, becoming a subsidiary of GoodfellowBros Inc., which itself dates from 1921, withthe resulting merging of peer companiesbeing of mutual benefit. The business hasdeveloped so that it has progressed fromusing small machines to employing cab drillunits, with Blasting Technology drills havingbeen found working on “The Big Island”(Hawaii), Maui, Oahu, and Kauai as well asin rocky soils of aPacific neighbor, Guam, and in the U.S. main-land coastal states ofOregon and Alaska. The company, which

began working on theislands with Tamrockdrills (Tamrock being acompany acquired bySandvik in 1997) andSandvik bits, has nowswitched exclusively toSandvik products, withthe backbone of thecompany’s equipmentfleet being the versatileSandvik DX800 drill, with four such units being operated on con-struction sites and in quarries. This drill righas a record of reliably and productivelypuncturing the island rock, leaving behindsmooth and vertical holes for the blasters. Now, however, Blasting Technology is

quarrying rock with a new generation of drillrigs, the Sandvik DP1500i, with the compa-ny manager’s being keen to extol its attrib-utes. “Accountants must love this machine,”said Blasting Technology Foreman ChrisHaynes. “I can’t imagine how anyone wouldnot want to use these machines, just for thefuel savings.” With the DP1500i using about5 gal. (19 L) an hour less than the predeces-sor DP1500 model, Haynes said, “The extramoney (for the new model) is all savings infuel.” General Manager Ted Fritzen, agreesas the savings means that if the DP1500i ranfor 40 hours a week, for a year, the savingsin fuel costs would be nearly $50,000. Thesavings are not theoretical either, as Fritzenreached that conclusion after fueling andmonitoring DP1500 and DP1500i drills thatwere working side by side.Lower fuel usage has the corollary effect

of creating lesspolluted air; infact, according toSandvik engineersthe DP1500i’s fuelefficiency resultsin 35 tons (32 t)less carbon diox-

ide at 2,500 engine hours than isproduced by its predecessor. Thedrill rig also boasts a patenteddust-binding system that containsthe worst of the airborne refusethrown up by a penetrating drillbit, which means, all in all, thatthe machine is friendly to theenvironment, which is an impor-tant consideration anywhere, but anecessity on projects in Hawaii. The DP1500i itself is a self-

propelled top hammer rock drillrig 24-ton (21.8 t) trackedmachine standing 10.5 ft. (3.2 m)high at the cab, with a lower cen-ter of gravity than earlier models, meaning that this optimized cen-ter of gravity provides a riggreater stability while operating. The rig carries a pivoting, tele-scopic boom, with the workingend being able to drill holes 3.5 to6 in. (8.9 to 15 cm) in diameter, aswell as being fitted with a high-frequency drifter which boosts the

rate of penetration. The DP1500i is poweredby an interim Tier IV Caterpillar engine, with the engine’s fuel efficiency stemmingfrom smart electronic control of enginespeed, and air compressor and oil cooler fanoperations. The heritage of the Sandvik DPi series

can be traced to the respected Tamrock

Pantera family of drills, but the new genera-tion rig certainly is not a hand-me-down.Rather, it is a comprehensive package ofadvanced features, developed over the lastdecade by engineers who continuallystretched and refined the parameters for effi-cient top hammer drilling. What they ulti-mately created was a machine with exem-plary performance, day in and day out, paired with such practical improvements asa larger fuel tank holding an incredible 180gal. (681 L) so that refueling need not occurevery shift.Additional benefits are derived from the

new features found on the Sandvik toolsused on the DP1500i; benefits that are clear-ly evident to informed people like Fritzen. “Ireally like the new Sandvik GT60 tubesteels. It helps to keep the holes straight,”Fritzen said, comparing the GT60 3.4 in. (87mm) tube to the 2.4 in. (60-mm) rod on the1500. “I like the GT60 shoulder drive com-ponent and the way the shank lines up. Youget a better transfer of the drill’s energy to thebit and into the rock. That’s another reasonwhy the machine is drilling faster and moreefficiently. It’s a great performer.” Fritzensaid the DP1500i was, “20 percent more pro-ductive right off the bat, compared with theolder model. With the move up in bit diam-eter to 4.5 and 5 inches, we were able tomaintain the footage and spread the patternof drilled holes, which also reduces thedrilling costs per produced ton. We’re verypleased with that.”The new generation of button drill bits is

a factor in increased production. However, itis the machine’s software that plays a crucialrole in its enhanced function, with the “i” in

the model number standing for“intelligence,” with Sandvik engi-neers crediting the machine with“practical intelligence. That is, thesystem can communicate to theoperator vital information such asthe condition of a hole beingreamed from the rock, the partsand systems that need servicing, and the number of hours thedrifter has been operating. Whensomething fails on the computer-controlled rig, a self-diagnosticssystem is able to determine whatpart or circuit is experiencing theproblem. “Trouble-shooting is much

easier,” said Chris Haynes, whosejob is to keep rigs out of troubleand to fix them when trouble aris-es. “You get all the error mes-sages on the screen in the cabinand they tell you where to look. The drill rig is laid out better thanthe older model to do trouble-

The DP1500i itself is a self-propelled top hammer rock drillrig 24-ton (21.8 t) tracked machine standing 10.5 ft. (3.2 m)high at the cab, with a lower center of gravity than earliermodels, meaning that this optimized center of gravity pro-vides a rig greater stability while operating.

Service, Product Support, DedicatedStaff Enable SANY’s Continued GrowthBy Lori TobiasCEG CORRESPONDENT

A company doesn’t get to be thefifth largest construction equipmentmanufacturer in the world withoutgood reason, and at SANY Global thatlong list of reasons begins with goodservice, product support, dedicatedpeople and a broad range of equipmentat a reasonable price. Or simply put,SANY offers its customers the value, quality and customer care. And yet, SANY’s explosive growth

is something of a well-kept secret.“KHL ranks the largest equipment

manufacturers globally as far as rev-enue and volume,” said Eric Teague, senior vice president of SANY. “Wewere listed number five in the 2013KHL Yellow Table for largest construc-tion equipment manufacturers in theworld and most people don’t knowthat. We’re large; we have the capitalbehind us to grow. We build a greatquality product. We support it well andwe’re a great option for those peoplethat are looking for an alternative towhat their current supplier is.”Headquartered in Peachtree City,

Ga., SANY has traditionally boughtcomponents for its equipment from for-eign manufacturers, then assembled themachines at its 400,000 sq. ft.(37,161.2 sq m) manufacturing plant inGeorgia.“During the course of 2015, we are

going to start trying to source morelocal components,” Teague said. “It’sthe same vendors that we’re using fromJapan and other parts of the world, butwe buy the Cummins engines locallyand then ship them or install them here.We can buy a Kawasaki locally instead

of having to buy from Japan. We’regoing to start working next year to domore and more locally sourced compo-nents.”Cummins engines will remain the

preferred brand when possible, butwhen the vendor doesn’t have the rightengines to match up to the equipment,SANY will continue its partnershipswith Isuzu and other OEMs,“That’s why we think our value

proposition is so good because we usethe same vendors that you see globallyin many other brands, but we happen tooffer that same quality product at acompetitive cost, said Teague.” SANY also plans to introduce new

equipment to the market, includinggraders, wheel loaders, backhoes, piledriving machinery and dozers.“The grader is something that we

showed here in North America in 2011

ConExpo and its been in testing andintroduced to other markets prior tonow and has compared very well,” saidTeague. “We benchmarked the leadingcompetitors and took what the cus-tomer liked about those and didn’t likeabout those and tried to build a productthat would more or less satisfy all theirneeds. The wheel loaders and dozerswe are now just introducing to theChinese market so we want to do sometesting there and we’ll have to do somelocal modifications for the customerbase and market demands in NorthAmerica. That’s why it’s going to take18 to 36 months to get those here. Butthey are on the board and coming.” With so much growth, it’s only natu-

ral that the manufacturing plant willrequire expansion as well. A new paintbooth is expected to be up and running

Eric Teague (L) and DaveHunter, both of SANY

America Inc., in front ofnewly constructed SANYexcavators in the 56,000

lb. (25,401 kg) class.

These SANY SY75C excavators are available witheither steel or rubber tracks.

Three SANY SY335C excavators, equipped with Tier IVengines, were sold and await pick up from the dealer.

Blastcrete’s D3522 Attachment ProvesEconomical for Hot Epoxy Grouting

The D3522 attach-ment hot epoxy pumpfrom BlastcreteEquipment Companycan be powered by anexisting hydraulicpower source. It islighter, more versatileand much more afford-able than hot epoxypumps andmixer/pump combina-tions with built-inpower supplies, espe-cially since skid steersand other equipmentwith auxiliaryhydraulic hookups canpower the unit, accord-ing to the manufacturer.

The D3522 attach-ment features ahydraulic squeeze(peristaltic) pump thatis built for long life andlow total cost of owner-ship. The pump has two rollers that rotate clockwiseand squeeze a 2-in. (5 cm) rubber pumping tube. Therotation generates suction from the receiving hopperand pushes the material through the pump and out thedischarge into the delivery hose. The epoxy materialsdo not come in contact with the moving parts of thesqueeze pump, unlike a rotor stator or piston-stylepump. The D3522 attachment’s primary wear part, a2-in. rubber pumping tube, can be replaced in 20 min-utes or less.

The D3522 attachment can pump hot epoxy orcementitious grouts at variable speeds from 0 to 6 cu.yds. (0 to 4.6 cu m) per hour and deliver up to 400 psiof pumping pressure. Those capabilities, coupled withthe unit’s light weight, make it easy to transport andhighly versatile. Contractors can use the pump for awide variety of applications, such as grouting tomount and secure heavy industrial equipment andpumping fiberglass jackets for pier rehabilitation andstabilization.

The D3522 attachment also can be used for spray-ing plaster and small wet-shotcrete applications.

The unit boasts a variety of safety features to pro-tect the operator. For example, if the pump becomesplugged, the operator can easily reverse the pump for5 seconds to relieve pressure on the delivery hose.

Blastcrete designed the D3522 attachment for easyoperation. The unit has a large, well-marked controlpanel with simple control levers to operate the pump-ing function. The control panel is near the hydraulichookups for easy access.

The D3522 attachment also is easy to clean andmaintain. After the unit has been emptied of excessmaterial, contractors can rinse the hopper with waterand insert a round sponge ball into the suction hole ofthe pump. The hopper is then flooded with water orother solution for cleaning epoxies. The ball is simplypumped through the pump and delivery hose to ensureit is clean and clear.

LPD-LD Works WellWith Hydraulic Outlets

Atlas Copco’s LPD-LD hydraulic post driver gives contractors a light-weight and easy-to-use tool for installing fences, tent stakes and groundrods. The unit weighs just 39 lbs. (17.7 kg) and can be used to drive 3/8-to 2-1/2-in. (.95 to 6.3 cm) diameter rods.

The LPD-LD works well with almost any hydraulic outlet, including apower pack or skid steer that provides a hydraulic flow of 5 gal. perminute (19 Lpm). Contractors can operate the unit with the built-in trig-

ger to easily deliver2,300 blows perminute (bpm) for fastinstallations in nearlyany terrain. Thishigh-frequency driv-ing also providessmooth operation andminimizes damage tothe top of the rod orpost, which can occurwith machines thatoperate with fewerbpm.

The post driveraccepts standard 2-in.(5 cm) diameter rods, and it can be usedwith adaptors orbushing inserts todrive 3/4- to 2-1/2-in.(1.9 to 6.3 cm) rods. The front end of theunit features a built-inanvil and pin forquick and easy instal-lation of adaptors andbushings. Contractorsalso can install stan-dard 5/8- and 1-in.(1.6 and 2.5 cm)bushing coverings fordriving ground rods.

To minimize damage to smaller diameter ground rods, contractors caninstall an adaptor to provide a surface for the anvil to strike rather than therod. The adaptor can be replaced with 1/2- to 1-in. rods or 2- to 2-1/2-in.(1.3 to 2.5 or 5 to 6.3 cm) diameter driver heads to install wood stakes, T-posts and round tubes.

E-Z Drill Model 210 Provides Maximum ProductivityModel 210 equipment-

mounted concrete drillattachments from E-Z Drilloffer specially designed fea-tures for maximum produc-tivity and low maintenance. The pneumatic attachmentsare ideal for full-depth roadrepair and patching projects. The series consists of

three models: the three-gang210-3 EQ MT, four-gang210-4 EQ MT and five-gang210-5 EQ MT. All three arecompatible with most mod-els of backhoes and excava-tors, and are ideal for full-depth road repair and patch-ing projects.A user-friendly, easily

accessible control panel ismounted on the drill to pro-vide convenient operationfrom the ground. The unitsare capable of drilling 5/8- to2-1/2-in. (1.6 to 6.3 cm)diameter holes, at a depth of18 in. (45.7 cm). Each drillmotor requires a minimumof 100 cfm (2.8 cu m) foroperation, with a minimumof 300 cfm (8.4 cu m)required to power the small-est unit in the series, thethree-gang Model 210-3 EQMT. To reduce air compres-sor requirements, an option-al 120-gal. (454 L) air tank isavailable.Designed for quick, pre-

cise drill positioning, the 210EQ MT drills feature a side-shift control. In contrast tosimilar equipment-mounteddrills, the carrier operator isnot required to position theunit in the exact drilling loca-tion. The drill must simplybe placed in close proximityto the specified drilling area, and then can be quickly andeasily adjusted to the targetlocation with a toggle switchfound on the control panel. The side-shift feature fur-

ther enhances productivityby allowing a second set ofholes to be drilled withoutthe need to move the drill, backhoe or excavator, pro-vided holes are specified on12-in. (30.5 cm) centers.Simply set the drill spacingat 24 in. (61 cm), drill one

set of holes, and engage theside shift. The unit willquickly and precisely move12 in. to drill the second set,all without repositioning thedrill or carrier. Drill spacingis adjustable up to 24-in.,and the drills offer lateraltravel up to 14 in. (35.5 cm). To reduce operator effort

and increase hole-drillingspeed, the drills feature a“floating” bucket curl pins.Because the pins have asmall range of motion, thedrills can automatically levelthemselves. This eliminatesthe tedious and time-con-suming process of manuallyleveling and positioningthem with each movement. For added convenience

and productivity, the 210 EQMT drills feature 360-degreerotation, which allows quickrepositioning for drillingwithin the same patch. Toenhance operator safety, therotating feature includes asafety swivel lock. With thesimple flip of a switch, thelock is activated and the drillis secured into place, ensur-ing safe transport and pre-venting potential harm to theoperator. A number of features

have been incorporated intothe 210 EQ MT drills toenhance durability andextend service life. Multi-point oil injection allowseach drill to be lubricatedindividually from a singlereservoir, ensuring each drillalways has the properamount of oil. This reduceswear on the motor and ismore effective than a centraloiling system, which doesn’toffer individual lubrication

points. An automatic drillshut-off further extends indi-vidual drill life by prevent-ing dry firing. The 210 EQ MT drills

offer extra height adjustmentto provide access to the cen-ter of a slab even in extremeasphalt overlay conditions. To complete the system, E-ZDrill offers a full line of drillbits and drill steel. For more information,

SANY Makes Customer Service Paramount With Next Day Shippingby December. And they’ve already added additional buildingpads so they’re ready when new space is required.“Pretty soon we are going to outgrow our warehouse

space so we are going to have to build a separate building,”said Teague. “Due to the manufacturing volume capacityneed for next year we’re not going to have room for it in thisbuilding.“SANY is a very aggressive company and we are intently

focused on the North American market. We just had ourthree year strategy meeting and we’re going to roll that outfor ’15, ’16 and ’17 and SANY definitely wants to establishthemselves as a player in the North American market.”SANY is committed to continuing the top-notch service

customers have come to expect. The company’s next day airtime for shipping parts and products is greater than 95 per-cent because of the large stock it keeps on hand. “Most manufacturers try to arrive between that 90 and 95

percent within 24 hours and the rest will come from overseasor whatever,” said Teague. “We really focus on being able toprovide as much as we can in that 24 hours so if we have toremove a part off the assembly line, we remove a part off theassembly line to keep a customer up and running. That’s oneof the worst thing you want to do from a manufacturingstandpoint, but it keeps your customer base satisfied.” And keeping the customers satisfied is of utmost impor-

tance at SANY. Because ultimately everything manmadecan and will break and when it does SANY knows when andhow you support the customer is key.“It doesn’t matter the brand; it doesn’t matter the product,”

says Teague. “It could be anything from refrigerators to air-planes. If you going to have an issue, and you are going tohave an issue, the customer remembers that issue, he doesn’tremember the 4,000 hours of great service he got out of themachine before. He cares about the problem he has today

and how quickly it can be rectified.”(This story also can be found on Construction

Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequip-mentguide.com.) CEG

Newest Cat Vocational Truck Model Enters Full ProductionIntroduced at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2014,

the CT681 is a Class 8 set-forward-axlemodel with a spacious and ergonomic cab, industrial styling, and a vocational-specificengine and transmission. Like the CatCT660, the first model in the Cat vocationaltruck line, it’s backed by bumper-to-bumperservice at more than 400 Cat dealer locationswith more than 2,300 service bays in NorthAmerica.Extensive testing of the CT681 with

North American customers was done as partof Caterpillar’s field follow program — theequivalent of more than three years of heavytruck use. Applications included snow plow, concrete mixer, dump and super dump.“This process provides a crucial feedback

loop between our customers and our voca-tional truck product team, identifying anyrequired changes to design and production,”said Dave Schmitz, global on-highway truckproduct manager. “Customers who havetested the truck tell us it drives well, it’s pow-erful, it’s quiet and their drivers enjoy gettingbehind the wheel. Based on this feedback,we’re confident the CT681 is ready to han-dle whatever tough jobs our customersthrow at it.”

Industrial, Attachment-Ready Design

With its set-forward axle, the CT681allows customers affected by bridge law for-mulas in their states or on the interstate high-way system to maximize loads. It’s also idealfor those who prefer a longer wheelbasetruck for better ride quality on long hauls orrough haul roads.

Comfortable, Productive CabThe CT681’s spacious interior helps

reduce driver fatigue, enhance safety andboost productivity. The ergonomic dash-board and center stack feature easy-to-readgauges that drivers can view through thesteering wheel. A tuned cab air suspensionsystem, premium grade sound insulation, and tight fitting components and trim deliv-er a smooth, quiet ride.Drivers can choose from multiple seat

options, including the Cat comfort seat, while a leather-wrapped steering wheel that

tilts and telescopes comes standard. They’llalso find plenty of room for paperwork, logbooks and other important items in the easy-to-reach side compartments, back-panelstorage and oversized side pockets.Overhead, under-dash and adjustable maplights illuminate key work areas, and easy-access HVAC controls and vents are posi-tioned for optimum air flow.In terms of safety, the CT681 offers an

enhanced view of the road, due to a curved, sloped, wraparound windshield in a one- ortwo-piece design, sealed-beam halogenheadlights and LED park/turn lights. Large, heated, cowl-mounted mirrors with integrat-ed turn signals also enhance all-around visi-bility. A generous door opening, three-pointgrab irons and skid-resistant steps helpensure safe entry and exit.

Performance-Matched Engineand Transmission

Under the hood, the CT681 is powered bya Cat CT Series vocational truck engine withhorsepower ratings from 365 to 430 and

peak torque ratings from 1,250 to 1,550 lb.-ft. Designed for vocational applications, these engines deliver optimum horsepow-er/torque combinations and the flexibility tomatch power and performance to specificjobs and operating conditions.CT Series engines feature a highly effi-

cient selective catalytic reduction (SCR)solution to meet emissions standards, withupgraded in-cylinder technology and provenaftertreatment. A compacted graphite ironblock, designed for durability, reducesweight by as much as 200 lbs. (90.7 kg)compared to standard iron — allowing usersto increase payloads for added efficiencyand profit, according to the manufacturer. In addition, a single electronic control

module and fewer electrical connectionshelp reduce diagnostic and maintenancetime, and a fluid-free head gasket eliminatesthe risk of coolant leaking into engine oil orexhaust gases entering the cooling system.Performance-matched with the engine is

the optional Cat CX31 automatic transmis-sion. With six forward speeds and one

reverse, it’s built to complement the torqueoutput of Cat CT Series engines. The Cat CX31 automatic transmission

features a high power-to-weight ratio, fullpower shifting and quick acceleration toboost productivity. Ideal speed and torquecombinations help improve fuel economy, and two side PTO locations and a Cat exclu-sive rear PTO enhance performance andserviceability.Automatic shifting is easy to learn and

simple to operate, making it easier to find, train and retain productive drivers. Jobsitesafety is enhanced as well, since driversdon’t need to operate the clutch or removetheir hands from the wheel.Other options for the CT681 include a

variety of manual transmissions and theUltrashift Plus vocational transmission builtby Eaton.

Cat Connect/LINK technologies

The CT681 comes standard with ProductLink, a proprietary Cat telematics systemthat collects data from on-board systems andtransmits it via satellite and cellular networksto a secure Internet site. Using Product Linkand its easy-to-use web interface,VisionLink, truck owners and fleet man-agers can access accurate, timely data abouthow, when and where trucks are being used. With information from LINK technologies, customers can make fact-based decisions tohelp reduce costs, enhance productivity andimprove security. An optional vehicle infotainment system

and Bendix tire pressure monitoring systemalso are available on the CT681.“We designed the CT681 based on hun-

dreds of hours of customer input,” saidGeorge Taylor, director of Caterpillar’s glob-al on-highway truck group. “The result is atruck that’s built to maximize payloads, work hard and last for years, even in thetoughest applications, and the success of ourfield follow program bears that out.”For more information, visit www.drive-

As with the rest of the Prisecrange, these new HSI crushers possess theability to be configured into either a primary orsecondary crusher operating mode.Additionally single stage crushing also is a possibilitywith the ability to recirculate material to the primary versionsof the crushers.

Exceptional Reduction RatiosSandvik’s all new design of crushing chamber ensures

even greater reduction ratios than have been previouslyobtainable. Furthermore the Prisec 3 crushers are able to eas-ily produce impressive reduction ratios through the use oftwo uniquely designed curtains, which have traditionallyrequired a three curtain configuration crusher. As well asenhanced productivity, this means fewer wear parts andreduced maintenance.

Energy Efficient Overload ProtectionThe CI531 and CI532 Prisec 3 are equipped with an infi-

nite hydraulic curtain adjustment combined with a brakepositioning system which relieves pressure, and setting, when un-crushable objects enter the crusher. No hydraulicpower is required during normal operation, thus saving onoperating power and reducing total power consumption. Both first and second curtains are infinitely adjustable via theSandvik’s adjustment / braking system, which is located onthe cross beams of the crusher. This system gives hydraulicadjustment of both curtains, via the standard supply electrichydraulic power pack.

Dealing With Crusher BlockagesCrusher blockages have always historically been a prob-

lem, especially when operating in a primary mode. Removalof the blockage, with the combined downtime and health andsafety risks encountered, are now eliminated with the newgeneration Prisec 3 crusher. Due to the features of the crush-ers no stopping of the crusher is necessary, with no operator

intervention inside the crusher, no heavy lifting gearrequired, all resulting in maximum uptime and reducedhealth and safety problems, according to the manufacturer.

Rotor and Hammer DesignThe rotor and hammers can be con-

sidered as the heart of the crush-er; this is why those used on thePrisec 3 range are both robustand efficient. Rotors have supe-rior weight and design, essential

for delivering the high inertia required for opti-mum crusher performance, thus ensuring stability

and smooth operation during production. The “banana”shaped self-sharpening hammer design helps to keep thecontact heads sharper during operation, resulting in moreeffective shearing of the incoming material, and henceimproved production.

Easy and Safe MaintenanceA key safety interlock system ensures safe maintenance of

the crusher and prevents accidental opening of the crusherand inspection doors even in multiple installations. It alsoallows the ability to raise curtains during operation withoutstopping the crusher to clear blockages, and re-set automati-cally to operating setting. This maximizes uptime andreduces the need for heavy lifting gear and operator / main-tenance intervention, thereby reducing further health andsafety risks.

Maximum Uptime, Maximum BreakageThrough the modularized nature of the Prisec 3 range,

wear parts can be turned for maximum life/usage with thesame size being used across the whole range of crushers. Inaddition, Sandvik’s technology in the hammer and linermaterial composition provides options far surpassing oldindustry standard of manganese, resulting in even loweroperating cost per ton and the ability to operate efficiently ina variety of materials, especially recycling applications, according to the manufacturer. For more information, visit

Atlas Copco Bucket Crushers QuicklyPulverize Material in Tight SpacesAtlas Copco’s compact bucket

crushers allow operators on con-struction, demolition andtrenching work sites toquickly and effectivelypulverize asphalt, con-crete and stone, even intight spaces. Operatorscan re-use the materialon site or sell it. This cre-ates a new revenuestream and reduces trans-portation and dumpsiteexpenses. The bucketcrushers also eliminate theneed for additional crushingequipment. The company designed the crush-

ers to provide a long service life withreplaceable top and bottom jaws andsingle jaws that can be rotated. Atlas Copco offers four models

Blasting Technology Hardat Work on Solidified Lavashooting — the way the hoses are routed, thegullwing service doors, the way the compo-nents are installed. If the computer finds anerror, it tells you exactly where to look.” TheDP1500i also has a new air control circuit, which increases the efficiency of the com-pressor, a significant upgrade. As Fritzensaid, “The DP1500i has plenty of air andpower.”

A machine’s efficiency is not divorcedfrom an operator’s efficiency, and the DPiseries has not neglected to provide a safe andcomfortable work space for the operator. Theoperator’s pressurized and insulated cabinhas an air filtration system, as well as an opti-mum sized air conditioning unit, so the per-son at the controls isn’t distracted by dis-comfort. Bright and clear monitoringscreens, armrest-integrated joy sticks, and animble drilling control system provide theoperator firm control of their work, with thecab’s glass front providing high visibilitywith a high-tensile steel grille to protect itagainst flying rock.

“The visibility is better; the windows are

bigger and there are more of them,” saidHaynes. He added that Pete Peterson, thedrill operator for Blasting Technologies,“Loves the new features, the improvementsmade on the machines. They (Sandvik) putthe fuel tank and water tank inside the carri-er so the tip factor is way reduced. I knowPete likes that because he is the guy operat-ing the machine.”

The DPi series drills are quite simply agood fit with Blasting Technology, a compa-ny that is planning to expand its operations. The greater efficiency of the new modelsmeans that the company can keep its currentwork crew of less than a dozen people, andstill take on more projects because of the 20per cent jump in drilling productivity.

The equipment yard at BlastingTechnology has now been entirely Sandvikfor nearly 20 years. During those twodecades, the company has enjoyed the work-ing relationship with Sandvik sales and serv-ice personnel on the U.S. mainland

TxDOT Expects Work toBegin by Early Summer ’15by the Legislative Budget Board. TxDOT suggests that 30 percent be bud-

geted for congestion relief projects, primari-ly in urban areas. Another 30 percent couldgo toward “statewide connectivity’’ projectsthat would join rural areas to interstates andother state highways. The remaining 40 per-cent would be evenly split between mainte-nance and repair of damaged roads in thestate’s oil and gas areas. TxDOT’s deputy executive director, John

Barton, said he expects some of the workfunded by the newly available money to

begin by early summer. All of the fundingwill likely be committed to projects by theend of next year, with construction followingsoon after. “Our goal is to have all of this money out

quickly,’’ Barton said. Senate Finance Chairwoman Jane

Nelson’s office said the Rainy Day fund cur-rently has $6.7 billion, but will be at $8.44billion after it receives half of last year’s oiland gas taxes.

Building Facility Comes With Poor Soil, Swelling ChallengesNinety-five percent of the building is pre-

engineered steel, according to Jeff Eriks, apartner at Cambridge, a design build firmthat has specialized in building waste-relatedfacilities since 1986. It’s an extremely tallbuilding, with roughly 40-ft. (12 m) talleaves and consists of three separate pieces:the tipping building, where the materialcomes in; the processing building, wherematerials are processed and the bale storagebuilding.“The tipping building con-

sists of a lot of cast-in-placeconcrete walls inside the steelbuilding,” Eriks said. “Becauseof the daily abuse these build-ings take from the trash andmotors working around thebuilding, they have to beextremely durable. We aredoing a white roof to try to limitthe heat island effect and keepthe building cooler since it is inLas Vegas. The slabs are 9 to12 inches thick. That’s becausein the loading area it takes a lotof abuse from bucket of theloader scraping, and in theprocess building it’s because ofthe weight of the equipment.”A two-story masonry and

structural steel office building isattached to the facility. The firstfloor will house all of theemployee areas, break roomand locker room. The secondfloor will house offices and an educationalarea. The facility sits on 18 acres in NorthLas Vegas about one mi. off of I-15.The general contractor currently has 10 to

12 pieces of equipment on site, includingbelly pan earth movers, excavators and doz-ers. “When we start doing the concrete work,

we’re going to be pumping a lot of con-crete,” Eriks said. “There will be five pits inthe building to accommodate the equipment.Obviously, when they start setting the build-ing, there will be a couple of good-sizedcranes on site. Also, there’ll be several artic-ulating forklifts on the property. In terms ofjobs during construction, we anticipatinghaving 70 guys on site daily from the timewe start pouring concrete to the end of thejob.”While convincing southern Nevada resi-

dents to recycle is no longer the challenge itonce was, building the facility comes with afew challenges of its own.One of those is the poor soil in Nevada.“This area in particular has a lot of poor

soils with a high swell factor,” Eriks said.“As it gets moisture, it changes. A lot of soilwe’re having to take out and bring in soil that

doesn’t have those issues.”But the real challenge lies ahead when the

CP Group begins setting equipment.“They have a five month install time,”

Eriks said. “We have five months to get it toa point where they can start setting theequipment. The last five months we will beworking around them. We’ve done it beforeand it is challenging. As long as everyoneworks together, it will be OK. We’ll be erect-ing the metal building around them as theyare installing equipment. There will be a lotof safety issues. That is going to be the mostchallenging piece of construction.”But once it’s finished, Christopher expects

it will be a great point of pride in the area andquite likely something of a tourist destina-tion in its own right. The complex will feature an interactive

learning center offering visitors a first-handview of the recycling process. It will includedisplays, videos and educational materialson recycling and sustainability. The learningcenter is intended to be a resource for thecommunity and customers, as well as aneducational destination for sustainability-minded Las Vegas tourists.“On the second floor, we’ll have glass that

you can look out into thefacility,” Christopher said.“We do a tremendous amountof tours now. But for safetyreasons we can’t take themout on the floor. We will beable to literally walk themthrough from when the trucktips to putting the bale on atruck to the manufacturer. Themore we teach the kids torecycle, the more they are thetrash police at home.

“It’s going to take the visitor’s center tothe next level as far as being interactive. Thecustomers want this. We get calls all the timefrom scouting groups, from schools. Theywant to understand it. Folks don’t under-stand all the work that goes into actually run-ning waste through a system and creating abale of material that is going to wind up cre-ating another product. Everyone is prettyexcited about it.”

RECYCLING from page 1

While convincing southern Nevada residents to recycle is no longer thechallenge it once was, building the facility comes with a few challengesof its own. One of those is the poor soil in Nevada.

Tim Oudman (L), area president, and LenChristopher, general manager of recycling division.

The complex will feature an interactive learning center offering visitors a first-hand view of the recycling process. It will include displays, videos and education-al materials on recycling and sustainability.

“In terms of jobs during construction, we anticipating having 70 guys on site daily from

the time we start pouring concrete to the end of the job.”Jeff EriksCambridge
