903 units were installed at approximately the rate of 75 feet to 100 feetper day. As a cleaning crew prepped the pipe, three installation crewsapplied the Clock Spring® kits (the pipes were within three inches ofother hazardous product lines).

The Clock Springs not only provided reinforcement to the damagedareas along the pipe, but also permanent protection from suspensionchemicals found in the drift of vapour off the cooling towers for atleast the next 50 years. The projected life of the repair exceeds the lifeof the plant.

The repairs also included 90 and 45-degree fittings.

Specifically designed for refineries, terminals and process plants Clock Spring® is an extremely cost-effective permanent repair for pipelines and pipework.

Clock Spring® is used to repair severe corrosion, scrapes, gouges and other blunt defects that penetrate up to 90% of the wall thickness.

A corrosion cell can find its way to a pipeline not only through the ground, but also by air. Recently, a refinery in the U.S.A found how corrosive an ‘air-borne’ drift from a cooling tower can be. An above ground pipeline had corrosion spots spanning over nine hundred feet running parallel to a cooling tower.

A conventional solution to this problem would have encountered serious challenges, such as additional work permits required from various divisions and companies and safety hazards due to the close proximity of process equipment and other product lines which made this project under traditional scenarios an arduous and expensive task.

The Clock Spring® composite reinforcement system was the logical alternative choice as no hot work, down time or line reductions were necessary.

903 units were installed at approximately the rate of 75 feet to 100 feet per day. As a cleaning crew prepped the pipe, three installation crews applied the Clock Spring® kits (the pipes were within three inches of other hazardous product lines).

The Clock Springs not only provided reinforcement to the damaged areas along the pipe, but also permanent protection from suspension chemicals found in the drift of vapour off the cooling towers for at least the next 50 years. The projected life of the repair exceeds the life of the plant.

ICATS is the “Industrial Coatings Applicator Training Scheme”.

The scheme was produced by Correx Ltd in conjunction with the Highways Agency and Network Rail as a response to the increased demands of industry. ICATS is a comprehensive structured training scheme for the registration, training and certification of industrial surface preparation and coating operatives.

The scheme has a mandatory basic unit “Industrial Coatings Applicator” that comprises of 6 modules - Health and Safety, Site Access, Plant and Equipment, Surface Preparation, Paint Types & Application and Quality Control over 40 hours, Blast cleaning and Spray painting additional 12 hours each .

Registered ICATS companies and operatives are now specified for many major projects and are mandated by major structure owners throughout the UK and further afield.

Industry sectors now benefiting by using ICATS operatives are:

1. Highways bridges & gantries

2. Railway stations, bridges and underground

3. Petrochemical & offshore structures

4. Power generation

5. Environmental structures, barriers and sluce gates.

6. Major structural projects

7. The scheme complements other industrial skills sector schemes and is recognized by CSCS.

If you want to be the best, learn from the best!

Benefits of ICATS to Industrial Painting Contractors Improving standards of safety and workmanship should be the objective of all companies and the Industrial Coating Applicator Training Scheme (ICATS) truly delivers this in the workplace.

Over the past 20 years advances in industrial paints and the associated preparation standards make the application of systems today a skilled operation. Using unskilled, unqualified operatives drastically increases the risk of a costly coating failure. Previously industry did not have a structured training scheme for industrial coating operatives to eliminate this risk.

Having identified this skills shortage the Institute of Corrosion under its commercial arm Correx Ltd in conjunction with major structure owners and industry experts set up a task group to solve the problem. The key focus of the scheme is on safe working practices, surface preparation and application techniques working to recognized industry standards.

Today ICATS is delivering to industry the skills required through the ICATS Basic Module and its member companies. The scheme is mandated by both the Highways Agency and Network Rail and is the minimum requirement for any operative to carry out industrial coating application at any of their sites.

To further reinforce the skill level scheme has delivered it is now recognized by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and any operative passing the ICATS Basic Module can apply for a CSCS card. CSCS will not recognize a skills scheme unless it meets at least the standard of NVQ level 2. ICATS is designed as an in house, on the job, training course for both experienced operatives and newer recruits. Much of the course is practical as well as theoretical and will not require personnel in training to be away from the workface for any extended periods of time. Ongoing assessment allows the training to fit around the daily tasks of the operative. Having a trained and qualified workforce will allow you to demonstrate to your current and potential customers your capability to tackle most industrial painting projects in an efficient and professional way. This will give them confidence that they have selected the right company for the job.

There is now no reason why you should risk using unqualified operatives to prepare and paint valuable structures using today’s high performance systems.
