obedience. Our problem is
that people all over the world have obeyed the dictates of leaders . .
. and millions have been killed because of this obedience . . . Our
problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of
poverty and starvation, and war, and cruelty."

St. Oscar Romero
St. Oscar said, “If it is seditious to reveal to people their identity as the Body of Christ and remind them of the implications, then the liturgy is indeed sedi- tious” … referring to El Salvador in the early ‘80’s’. We must then, still today, link the Eucharist to so- cial justice and Romero is a great inspiration for us,
for all of us together.
Thank You !
The Office for Catholic Social Justice Ministry extends its thanks
to St. Teresa of Calcutta for including Cooperative Parish shar-
ing in your list of parish funding priorities, and for being one of
the many parishes in the Archdiocese that has made a commit-
ment to this important program. From helping parishes set up
food pantries, to providing safe summer programs for children, to
training leaders for ministry, your participation is a key to its
success, and we are truly grateful. Lynn Campbell

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Assisting our neighbors in need
February 24 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel Jesus gives us the challenge to “Love your enemies … Give to everyone who asks of you … Do to others as you would have them do to you … Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” In the month of February, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist our neighbors in need by providing food,
assistance with utility and rent bills, bus transportation and blankets. Your support of SVDP helps our neighbors in need and fills your heart with the mercy and grace of God.
Is there a neighbor or friend of yours who is in temporary need because of the loss of a job or an illness ? Please tell them to call the Society
of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help our neighbors in need celebrate the Light of Christmas.
We want to help !

Qualified Charitable Distributions
For those of you at least 70-1/2 with an IRA, you are eligible to take a Qualified Charitable Distribution or “QCD”. Your financial services agency can directly send a contribution amount you specify to any qualified charity you support, including Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish. You cannot re- ceive the money yourself; it must be sent directly from your IRA financial institution. You can contribute as often as you want, monthly or once a year. A QCD will cut your federal and state income taxes. It may also lower the tax amount on your social security income. - you will lower your AGI and pay less federal tax; you will lower your state tax since federal AGI is lower and you may lower the fraction of your Social Security income that is taxed. For more information, contact your financial advisor.

Poverty Awareness Month Many face barriers to breaking the cycle of poverty due to discrimina-
tion or racism. You might read and reflect on the U.S. bishops’ new
pastoral letter against racism, Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring
Call to Love.
See John Ryan after Mass for a copy.
We are called to confront the evil of racism and journey together to-
wards the conversion of hearts, minds, and institutions. How is this
letter calling you to conversion? What stereotypes do you have that
distort your vision of members of your local and global community?
Brake the Cycle of Poverty
The annual trip of this parish ministry is fast ap-
proaching. Departure will be Saturday, June 22nd
for a week cruising the byways of Connecticut,
spreading awareness of poverty in our state and the
Christian message that we are called to do something about it.
We are looking for folks who would like to join us for one or more of
the six days … either riding a bike or driving a support vehicle (or
riding shotgun) … visiting parishes, shelters, and politicians’ offices.
Please contact Lou Terzo at twoterzos@att,net or 860-268-8145 for
more information.

This year the JustFaith program at St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish will
start on Saturday morning, March 30th. And continue for 8 weekly
sessions at St Bart’s from 8:30 ‘til 11 on Saturday mornings.
Participants will deepen their understanding of justice in the Catholic
faith perspective … through in-depth readings from several books and
viewing a number of DVDs and online materials. Meetings will also
include prayer, dialogue, relationship-building, and a couple of guest
speakers.
To find out more, come to one of the “info sessions” this week:
either Thursday evening at 7 at St. Bart’s or Sunday at St.
Bridget’s in the cafeteria after 8:30 Mass.

A request from their latest newsletter: “Thank you everyone who has
been filling our pantry. So much love! We have invited St. Dunstan's
Church and former parishioners of St. Michael's Church to make use
of our basement/laundry room to continue a food pantry that had run at
St. Mike's across the street. Now many of our families benefit from
twice monthly supplies of milk, bread, eggs, butter and cheese. We
are looking for a volunteer or two to help out on Saturday mornings
twice a month from 9:00-10:30, we are not looking for every Saturday
it is just to give St. Dunstan's a little help.”
If you are interested in helping out, please let me know and I’ll have
someone from HCW contact you. Thanks.

Last year, we helped secure passage of the Global Food Security Reau- thorization Act and protect funding for nutrition programs at home and abroad. Our goal this year is to persuade Congress to make global nutri- tion a priority by increasing funding for maternal and child nutrition programs.
DYNAMIC CATHOLIC daily reflection:
INEQUALITY by the Numbers
From 2008 thru 2017, in those 10 years, 466 USA companies spent $4 trillion buying back their own stock – a financial maneuver to inflate share price … and executive pay. After the 2018 tax cuts, corporate America spent another $1 trillion on stock buybacks in 2018, in one year! Who, other than Pope Francis, thinks income and wealth inequality is UNJUST enough already? Who thinks God’s plan includes that kind of wealth accumulation, when one third of the richest country in the world lives on less than a living wage … and the second third is one paycheck from financial crisis?

FEBRUARY 24, 2019 THE SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
DID YOU KNOW? Lent begins on Wednesday March 6.
Lent, a time of reflection and repentance begins on March 6 with the celebration on Ash Wednesday. On Ash Wednesday we will be were marked
with ashes. The palms that we carried last Palm Sunday, will be burnt and the ashes are used to mark us with the sign of repentance. If you have
your palms from last year, please bring them to church next weekend so they can be added to those being burned.
This custom of placing ashes on the heads of people is an ancient penitential practice among the Hebrew people. In the early church, those who need-
ed forgiveness for a grave sin did a public penance as a sign of repentance. Their return to the sacraments and to the community involved placing
ashes on their heads as an outward sign of their return to God. Gradually the custom grew of all the faithful receiving ashes at the start of Lent.

In the 4th and 5th centuries, there was a detailed process for becoming a Catholic Christian. When a person entering the Church came to the end of the
process there was a forty day retreat during which a person prepared to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter
Vigil. (The evening before Easter Sunday). This final time of preparation became what we call Lent. The Second Vatican Council restored the pro-
cess by which adults receive the sacraments and it is called the RCIA. (THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS.) For those 11
adults in our community who will receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil, this Lent is a time of retreat. They will be praying, fasting, and prepar-
ing. For those of us already baptized it is a time to encourage the candidates and catechumens, to pray with and for them and to prepare to renew our
own baptismal promises on Easter.
This Sunday the catechumens and candidates in our community will publicly state their intentions to be members of the Catholic Church. They will
sign their names in the Book of the Elect and then we will send them forth with our prayers and support to the Cathedral of Saint Joseph where the
bishop will declare them the “elect” of God. The entire rite celebrates our realization that it is God’s action, God’s choosing and God’s grace which
have brought the candidates and catechumens to this moment in their conversion. It is also a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect on our own bap-
tism. Would we do it again? Has it made a difference in our lives? Do we recognize God’s action and God’s choosing in our lives?
“It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain” John 15:16

The Little Black Books Six minutes a day. That's what you're asked to give during the 40 days of Lent.
This Little book provides the framework to enjoy one of the Church's oldest traditions of prayer called lectio divina - sacred reading. We take a short
Scripture passage and simply let God speak to us through the words, guiding us to reflections that sometimes seem to come from nowhere.
People are often surprised at how easy it is to pray this way, and how deep such prayer can be.
It can change your day .... change your life.
The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity
Get practical tools to dispel the false promises the modern culture feeds you, and discover the single truth that is the key to regaining your fervor,
uniting Christians, and leaving your mark on the world—and experiencing more happiness than you thought possible.
HAITI … is once again “on edge”
From Fr. Rick Frechette, who has been ministering in Haiti for years, we hear this, “Social and political tensions in Haiti have reached their flash points over the past number of months, and we have been living, with more intensity these days, what seems like the dangerous and cynical unraveling of a nation. The spiral of violence and destruction is both tragic and maddening.
The simply stated reason for all of this is that the cost of living has become impossible, in a country where it was already hard enough to stay alive. Since most stores, banks and businesses remain closed, we are hoarding cash where we can, and we are obliged to pay black mar- ket prices for necessities. It’s understandable - the fear, the frustration, the feelings of futility. The lesson is, we do the right thing, in season and out of season, without caving in to frustration, futility and despair.”
We are trying to find out the best way(s) we might help our Haitian neighbors at this time. Meanwhile, please keep your eyes and ears open to what’s happening there … and PRAY.
“Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Lent is approaching. A couple of articles (about our Christian call to
LOVE) from Today’s American Catholic caught my eye today. Copies
are available in the justice center; please grab a set.
+ Begin Again to Love – Asking the question, “Do I love
enough?”, Jane Bailey offers a comfortable process in re-
sponse.
Nyklicek’s article is, nevertheless, one thing I really needed
to hear.
Now a child is the very sign and sacrament
of personal freedom... a fresh free will added
to the wills of the world. G.K. Chesterton

And God Said What?
Saturday, March 9, 2019 12:30-4:30 PM
“Coffee and ...” begins at noon.
Pastoral Center: St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield.
Does God allow suffering in order to test us?
Does God throw people out where there is
weeping and gnashing of teeth?
A core truth of our faith is that God is love. Nevertheless, many Chris-
tians harbor a negative image of God. Please join in investigating how
Catholic Biblical Interpretation answers important questions of our
faith.
All are welcome to this free presentation by Dr. Margaret Nutting of

• Is Church sometimes too big for you?
• Would you like to belong to a community of people who believe and are trying to live by the Gospel?
We invite you to come to a Small Christian Community Open House on Thursday, March 14th, from 7-8:30 PM, in
the St. Bartholomew Parish Hall. We will hold a sample Small Christian Community Meeting. The scripture readings
for Sunday, March 17th, will be used for this gathering and light refreshments will be served.
There is no need to have any Bible background and all are welcome. Come and find a place where "Sometimes you want to go where everybody
knows your name and they're always glad you came."
I have belonged to a Small Christian Community for over 20 years because it is one of the few places in my everyday life that I can passionately and
rawly speak about my faith and how it shapes my everyday life. I have the opportunity to be enriched by the faith, wisdom, and encouragement of my
fellow members, and I know I am doing the same for them. We are ordinary people trying to live out the gospel message, and each time we meet, we
feel renewed and so blessed to have been together. Our group meets monthly, and when we prepare for the coming Sunday’s scripture, I am blessed
with the time, space, and listening people to REALLY see how God is speaking in my current situation. Sometimes I even get more insight as I am
driving home from our meetings or through the week or when the scripture is read again at Mass. A Small Christian Community is a gift that God
wants us to have in this busy, noisy world. Small Christian Communities help me find peace and balance. Kelly Knotts

THE SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 24, 2019
St. Bart’s Monthly Food Collection The 2019 Lenten Season begins in just a few days. Our thoughts turn to our Lenten plans as regard pray-
er, fasting and almsgiving. One simple way to add to our charitable giving is to remember our neighbors who need help with feeding their
families. During Lent, why not add a few extra cans of tuna fish or salmon to your shopping list ? Bring them with you to Mass and put them into the boxes at both church entryways. Not a large inconven- ience for you, but a large help to those in need. Thank you.
Meals for the Immaculate Shelter
Volunteers are needed to donate food items for dinners that we are sponsoring at the Immaculate Conception Men’s Homeless Shelter in Hartford. We are in need of: Chicken and/or Pasta dishes Salad
Bread/Rolls Beverages Desserts
We also need people to serve the meals at the shelter. This is a great opportunity to meet people in the community. The upcoming dates are as follow: Mar. 17 Apr. 28
If you are interested in helping this year, please contact: Wendy Rego at 860-810-7888.
We will be leaving from the lower parking lot at 5:30p.m. A huge thank you to the
parish community for do-
nating the hats, gloves,
Immaculate Conception
over the last few
months. We collected over
pairs of underwear, 363
sets of thermal underwear,
blanket!!! We distributed
monthly shelter meals on
two occasions and they were so very grateful and excited to pick out
what they needed from the boxes. Your generosity is amazing and
truly appreciated by myself and the shelter .
Singers Invited !
The St. Teresa Choir welcomes any singers who would like to join us in preparing music for Lent and the Easter Triduum. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 7 - 9 at St. Bartholomew Church. Liturgical Ministry Sunday
On Sunday, February 24 from 1:00 - 4:00p.m. we will hold a special event for current and prospective liturgical ministers. This will take place at St. Bart’s. There will be introductory and refresher training for altar servers, sacristans, lectors and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. Eucharistic ministers need to renew their training annually. We will begin with a light lunch, followed by break-out sessions for each liturgical ministry. Current and future candidates who wish to serve the Parish of St. Teresa of Calcutta in this manner are encouraged to email Leslie Merwin, at [email protected] to be registered for this event. Our goal is to unify the liturgical ministry at the Parish of St. Teresa of Calcutta. We welcome all who wish to serve. Altar servers are eligible once they are in first grade.
