Here is the situation… we’ve taken the lead by 2! There are 3 seconds left on the clock. What should we do on the kick off?
Well, let’s go ahead and do some brainstorming!
We need 4 seconds of hang time for our team to get down field.
If we kick it into the end zone, it’ll be a touchback and they’ll have a shot at our end zone.
If we kick it too short, they could return it for a touchdown and we would lose the game.
We’ll avoid kicking it to the side to prevent it from going out of bounds and taking a penalty.
WHAT DO WE GOTTA DO?
• Put it in the air for 4 seconds.• Place in in the centered with respect to the
side lines.• Kick it at least past the 20 yard line.• Don’t kick it into the end zone.
• So… how about the 10 yard line?
Let’s Get Our Data Together!
• Change in x-position is…
60 yards!
Let’s Get Our Data Together
• Change in y-position is…
Well, the ball starts on the ground and finishes on the ground… so 0!
Let’s Get Our Data Together
• We’ve already said we need 4 seconds!• Also, the acceleration due to gravity is 9.81
meters per second squared.• Let’s convert the 60 yards into meters…
Sort It All Out
x - values y - valuesx = 0 y =0x0 =54.86 y0 =0v =?? v =??v0 =?? v0 =??a =0 a =-9.81t =4 t =4
What Do We Need?
How fast do we need to kick the ball and at what angle?
Let’s Start With the X-Directionx - values y - valuesx = 0 y =0x0 =54.86 y0 =0v0 =?? v =??v =?? v0 =??a =0 a =-9.81t =4 t =4
X-Direction Velocity
a = 0
What Do We Need?
How fast do we need to kick the ball and at what angle?
Let’s Now Get the Y-Directionx - values y - valuesx = 0 y =0x0 =54.86 y0 =0v0 =13.72 v =??v =13.72 v0 =??a =0 a =-9.81t =4 t =4
Y-Direction Velocity
Now Use the Pythagorean Theorem
Now Use the Pythagorean Theorem
Now Use the Pythagorean Theorem
Now Use Trig to Get the Angle
Kick the ball with a velocity of 23.94 meters per second at a 55.04 degree angle to the field!
The Answer!!!
THE END!
