M. Thenmozhi, country's first IBR certified woman welder, on the shop floor of a fabrication unit in Tiruchi

Our country has quite a few women welders. But, Ms. Thenmozhi is said to be the first to get the certification under the Indian Boiler Regulation Act after stringent tests

Welding isn't the first industry to place extra value on female workers. Most of Hollywood's first film editors, or "cutters" as they were called, were women. The tedious work included sifting through thousands of feet of negatives, cutting the film and then joining the pieces together

Just as it takes patience to craft scenes into a film, welding requires diligence to produce a weld bead fusion along a metal joint.

This process is similar to a sewer adhering a seam.

"You can't rush the bead or you won't get a clean fusion," said Lorenz, who runs her own shop, Aerospace Welding Services, in Silver Spring

'GIRLS CAN'T WHAT?' TO BOOST WOMEN IN WELDING ENGINEERING

As a country we are short of skills. So to restrict ourselves to a percentage of the population is not advisable.

"We need to make sure we access as many skilled and talented people as we can to deliver growth across the sector.“

We need people from different backgrounds, cultures and gender perspectives but at the moment we are not giving girls the choice and they are too often missing out.

WELDER

Welders permanently join pieces of metal with metal filler, using heat with or without pressure.

They construct and repair parts of ships, automobiles, space crafts and other products.

You may find these individuals joining beams and steel reinforcing roads in building, bridges and highways.

12/29

UNDERWATER WELDER

Underwater welders and drivers.

Welders typically perform underwater cutting, fitting, inspection and NDST and underwater photography.

You may find underwater welders working on an oil rig planted hundreds of mils out to sea.

Many experienced welders-driver go on to become engineers, instructors and diving operations supervisor and served as consultant for underwater welding operations and other related fields.

13/29

WELDING ENGINEER

Welding engineers are the people who design, produce, perform, and maintain welded products.

These behind-the scenes professional deal with a broad range of welded material, including bridge, building, pressure vessels, chemical processing equipment, transportation vehicles for water, land, air, and space travel and production and processing machines of all type

DEMAND FOR STEEL IN INDIA

18/29

DEMAND PROJECTION FOR WELDING PROFESSIONALS

Steel is used for creating infrastructure such as roads, bridges, etc., for building power plants, petro-chemical industries and refineries, for railways rolling stock and track, ship manufacture, automobiles, etc.

Welding is the most widely employed fabrication process

For every ton of steel consumed, about 5 kg of weld metal is required to be deposited through different welding processes.

MAKE IN INDIA CONCEPT

Make in India is an initiative program of the Government of India to encourage companies to manufacture their products in India. It was launched by P.M Narendra Modi on 25 September 2014

The major objective behind the initiative is to focus on 25 sectors of the economy for job creation and skill enhancement. Some of these sectors are: automobiles, chemicals, IT, pharmaceuticals, textiles, ports, aviation, leather, tourism and hospitality, wellness, railways, auto components, design manufacturing, renewable energy, mining, bio-technology, and electronics.

In August 2014, the Cabinet of India allowed 49% foreign direct investment (FDI) in the defence sector and 100% in railways infrastructure. The defence sector previously allowed 26% FDI and FDI was not allowed in railways. This was in hope of bringing down the military imports of India

Also in February, Marine Products Export Development Authority said that it was interested in supplying shrimp eggs to shrimp farmers in India under the initiative

In June 2015, France-based LH Aviation signed an MOU with OIS Advanced Technologies to set up a manufacturing plant in India to manufacture drones

RESPONSE TO MAKE IN INDIA CONCEPT

SKILLS – BEGINER TO CHAMPION

Knowledgeable welding professionals with the know-how of Advanced welding technology are very much required to meet the growth projected in welding.

Technical hands having sophisticated skills are also the need of the day and days to come.

24/29

25/29

Considering the beginning of your career you need to have skills like: Basic understanding of how and why welding actually works Work with different kinds of people Understand the demand of the jobs Self motivation Both theory & practical knowledge of welding

As & when you proceed further in your career, Welding is described more as an art than as a craft, is modern profession with many faces and levels. It seeks the skills like changing environment Adapting other skills that complement welding Dynamic nature Challenge acceptance Applying knowledge Scientific principles Certification / Qualification (CSWIP , AWS , API , etc..)

SKILLS – BEGINNER TO CHAMPION

EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

ROLE OF THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF WELDING (IIW)

IIW India conducts welding courses leading to AM-IIW qualification equivalent to an Engg. Degree

IIW India also operates the NWTCS program for training and certification of welders at their Approved institutes.

IIW is also an assessing body under MES scheme to ensure standard of training of welders.

IIW India branches conduct many short courses to enhance the knowledge of welding personnel.
