The Metro Transit Police Department has an authorized strength of 490 sworn police officers, 165 special police officers and 92 civilian personnel. Our officers provide a variety of law enforcement and public safety services on the Metrorail and Metrobus systems in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

Transit Police Officers have jurisdiction and arrest powers throughout the 1,500 square miles in the Transit Zone that includes the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. Transit police officers investigate crimes that occur on, to or against Transit Authority facilities and

serve a population of 3.2 million. Our extensive police training is second to none and prepares our candidates for uncommon opportunities. Recruit officers complete 38 weeks of rigorous basic training, followed by 10 weeks of field training.

We are a full service police department with specialized units including Special Response Team, Metrobus Enforcement Division, Anti-Terrorism Team, Criminal Investigative Division, Motorcycle Unit, K-9 and Explosive Ordinance Division.
